Excellent site for kids! We spent 9 nights in a trailer tent here, experienced some horrendous weather, but would still definitely return - our 10 year old son described it as his best holiday ever! Basically I think that is because we felt it was a really safe site and he had the freedom to come and go as he pleased. The camping pitches are terraced into a hillside and to be honest were the smallest pitches we've ever been on - you couldn't fit a car and our table and chairs at the side, so we chose to leave the car in the car park on the couple of nice days we had. We had to accept though, that Devon had just suffered some horrendous flooding, so the owners were having to move bookings around according to what pitches were usable. There is major refurbishment of the campsite being done over Winter 2007/2008, with some super pitches being developed, so it will be interesting to see if we fare any better for a pitch next year.
The play area for the kids is fantastic. The indoor pool lovely (although the restrictions on, jumping, diving, bombing, etc, etc mean kids can literally just swim, so my two at ages 10 and 12 weren't too happy!). The arcade was a lifesaver with the weather - with the table tennis and bowling alley being well used. There is a social club, but that isn't our thing at all, so can't comment on what it was like. The restaurant, cafe and takeaway were all really well priced and good quality food. The onsite shop is really well stocked and I didn't feel I was being ripped off. The beach is a pebble one, but is lovely when you get the weather to enjoy it! There's a small refreshment hut, and a guy hiring out canoes/boats, which the kids loved. The showers were always hot, but if anything were a little too powerful, and since you had to get changed in the cubicle (they are very large) and hang your clothes near the door, the shower spray always hit your clothes, and the floor was permanently under 1/2 an inch of water, making dressing a balancing act! The toilets/ showers were regularly cleaned, but did get a bit muddy between times - though the weather was awful and I honestly don't think the site owners could do anymore. All in all, I would definitely recommend this site, and hopefully the planned improvements to the camping areas will make it less hard work next year.
The site is situated in lovely rolling green cliff tops on the jurassic coast. As it is on a slope, most areas have at least some view of the sea. The views from the roof top terrace at the upstairs bar are fantastic - straight out onto the cliffs & sea. Small shingle private beach - good for rock pools. Good children's outdoor play area, plus field for ball games, kit flying etc. Swimming pool area great - surrounding area kept at a high temperature so even if you don't swim, you can relax in comfort whilst the rest of the family do. Toddler pool plus swimming pool ideal for small children - as we were there low season we were the only ones in the pool, so not sure what like in high season. Shop sells most things you need, plus takeaway & cafe. Amusements & small bowling alley for the bad weather. Plenty to do in surrounding area - Seaton trams worth a trip, lots of nice walks in surrounding countryside. Fish & Chips at Budleigh Salterton a must. 2nd time we have visited & we will be back next year.
We stayed here as part of a Minis Rugby Club tour in one of the statics. It was the second time that we had come to Ladram Bay on tour, and yet again we had a great time. The static vans are spot on. The camp site on the whole is good, with some great views across the bay. Swimming Pool, Club house and shop are all adequate and the staff were very helpful.
We arrived very late (about 11pm) on this site and we had to pitch in the car park. Stayed in the horseshoe on T34 which is at the top of a very steep hill, however it had fantastic views.
The toilet and showers blocks were clean and the water pressure was good, if I had to grumble I would say that the water was a little too hot. The toilets near the shop/cafe were old and in need of renovation.
The swimming pool was reasonably priced, less than £5 for a family swim. Non swimmers can sit at the side of the pool or sunbathe on the loungers whilst still being able to see the pool. The pool was not deep and my 6 year old non-swimming nephew was able to jump in and out without drowning.
It is a 10 minute downhill walk into the village, there is a mill serving cream teas and the local pub is cheap with good food.
The site pub/club reminds me of Butlins, it is much nicer upstairs with a balcony overlooking the sea. It is expensive though and the cafe / takeaway were more reasonably priced.
There is little or no phone reception and I would not take anyone in a wheelchair as the campsite is on a slope.
We visited the site for a week-end with 150 other people from our junior football club. Access was a little tricky for caravans as it was steep and terraced. Toilets and showers were clean and hot, but would not be enough in peak season. Pool excellent for families and club was good but expensive. Good access to the beach. Children very well catered for, having good play areas and green areas to play on.
August 2005 I found this website a few weeks after I'd booked a week at Ladram Bay and having read some of the reviews it was with some trepidation that I drove West with wife kids and trailer in tow.
In fact, we had a brilliant week. Yes, the older toilet blocks need a bit of TLC and they all suffer from the usual moronic behavior displayed by some campers. (Toilet rolls in the loos along with skid marks and floaters - do they leave their toilets like that at home?)But in general, the toilet blocks were kept reasonably clean given the throughput.
We were on an electric pitch (T58) which gave us a great view of the bay although we had to get used to sleeping at an angle. You would think that having spent so much money to tier the hillside they would at least get the pitch level. Subsidence maybe?
Yes it was expensive and yes they do cram them in.
The entertainment in the evening is generally good and whilst you could accuse it and the day time activities of being somewhat 'Butlin-esque', you don't have to take part.
All in all we had a good time and will probably go back next year. RB
June 2005 I have camped with my young family at Ladram Bay many times over the past fifteen years. We always enjoy our stay at Ladram Bay, and will return.
The site is excellent, and the sea view is probably the best I have encountered at any camp site I have used.
The price these days is sadly extremely high. The older toilet and shower facilities really do not merit such a premium price, it's a big site and they need cleaning more often. You can certainly get much, much better facilities for a lot less.
However the new facilities, built in the last year or so looked a great deal better.
August 2005 We have just returned from a weeks camping at this site. Facilities overall were very good. The newly built club house and restaurants were great. Food was of a good standard. Kids club for the children of an evening was well organised.
The actual pitches were fairly flat although we have been to better. They are tiered. Pitches were not overly generous in size. A site for families who do not want a very very quiet holiday.!
The toilet and shower blocks were also newly refurbished and were of a very good standard. Cleaned 2/3 times a day whilst we were there.
Locations was great, site has its own bay/beach and locally in reach of Sidmouth and Beer and Lyme Regis.
August 2003 1st time in the South West but what a holiday, me husband and 3 kids had the best holiday ever, facilities were great hardly saw the kids, so much to do on site. We came here as we were visiting friends in Budleigh and they showed us this site so we pitched tent here, we didn't even have to book beforehand and that was after a 8 hr drive from Sunderland. We went all over while we were here, you must go to Beer and Branscombe and the caves in Beer, Sidcombe, Exmouth, Dawlish and Lime Regis were all in driving distance, even managed to visit the donkey sanctuary. The beach was great and the Jurassic cliffs were a sight to see. It was also the hottest week ever recorded too. Would like to come back to, well worth a visit with kids.
01.05.04 First went to Ladram camping with my folks in about 1975 as a 9 year old and loved it. I now go each May day bank holiday weekend and sometimes over the summer with my family and still love it. The caravans are very high quality and the tent area has good facilities. The site itself caters very well for kids and the indoor pool, well stocked shop and clubhouse are all very well run. The beach is pebbley and tricky to walk on, but safe for swimming and quite sheltered - also very close. Recommended.
Last 30 years First visited here when I was 2 years old. I have been back every year since and I am now taking my kids. So impressed that I bought a static caravan down here but time has come to look at new places for camping so anyone who has been here and can recomend anywhere as good please email me. Everything you need is on site and they are reluctant to take all male parties so unlikely to be any trouble. Not as special as it used to be, but I suppose nothing is. I do agree that it is starting to go "Butlin-Esq" in a small way with green coats etc, but they do look after the kids very well. Speed boats can be launched but it is very hard work to do so and will most definatley scratch the bottom on the pebble beach. Slipway only goes to beach and not to the water. Excellent model aircraft flying site at Woodberry common who welcome visitors for those who are as sad as me and love the hobby.
August 2001,2002,2003 Good site with plenty of amenities, lovely beach and pleasant uphill walks around. But they pack too many people in, no marked out spaces and tents are squeezed in wherever they can. Early season is great, but don't go in the first week of August - you can't breath!
August 2003 We found this site rather 'Butlin-esque', but pleasant enough. Very busy and closely packed, with terraced pitches.
The facilities are generally very good, there is a well stocked shop with a cafe and takeaway opposite, and an ice cream shop next to the private beach. The beach is pebbled, but the shop sells 'aqua shoes' which give your feet some well needed comfort! Parents should be careful with kids on the beach, as it shelves very quickly when the tide is in. We were disappointed with the toilet and shower blocks. OK, it was busy, but they were never particularly clean, quite a few showers didn't work, many doors had broken locks, quite a few broken toilet seats. On the plus side though, showers are free.
There is free entertainment every evening in the on site pub, but get there early if the site is busy, otherwise you won't get a seat. An unusual feature is that they have floodlights to illuminate the beach at night, which are left on until at least 1.30am (the latest we saw them!) We were there for the record hottest day in the UK - the first time 100F was topped - and people were still swimming at 1am. There are some great views from the coastal walk paths too.
Would we go again - probably, but not for too long a stay. We give this site 6/10, had the toilets and showers been better we'd have marked it higher.
