What an excellent site. We are often a bit wary of larger sites in the summer holidays but this was great. The facilities were a good distance from pitches so you had no noise from them at all. Pitches were large enough for a big tent plus car.
They were set out in terraced rows, each pitch having its own tap and hook-up. So there was nobody wandering across the pitch or people playing games round and about. And yes, you could hear other families but we found all our neighbours to be quiet and considerate so no problems there.
Facilities were spotless - we never saw the toilets and showers dirty as they were cleaned several times a day, even as early as 7am.
Also on site were a very well-stocked shop, a takeaway, cafe and restaurant. We had an excellent carvery in the restaurant which has amazing views over the bay.
The club was lively in the evening. We went there several times. The bar sells real ale for those who care about these things. The entertainment team do a good job with the cabarets but don't expect anything other than holiday camp style singing shows. There is also some outside entertainers to enjoy too. Our kids were too old for the kids' club but those who were using it seemed to have a good time.
All in all an excellent holiday and we would definitely consider returning.
Really enjoyed our stay here. Great location next to sea and outstanding coastal features.
Lovely walk along coast path to Sidmouth ( try Pea Green Boat cafe on seafront for excellent food and service at low cost after a walk in the splendid gardens near Jacobs ladder)
We didn't partake in the entertainment ourselves but it seemed great for families with regular weekend features also large well equipped outside play area
We did have a drink in the bar but I found the beer not to my taste and a bit expensive
Facilities very good incl toilets, level hard standing sea view pitches with water and ehu. Large fully stocked shop
I would think very busy in school holidays.
About 20mins walk to Otterton for bus if you need to go further afield
Great site, no negatives (yes there are seagulls but you are next to the sea so what do you expect)
Showers and facilities were tip top - very clean and tidy and no queueing even though it was half term.
Shop great - prices very reasonable and well stocked.
Didn't do entertainment although ate in the Pebbles restaurant overlooking the bay - a little pricey at around £8.00 per meal although huge portions and you are on holiday!
Have just returned from a 6 day visit to this outstanding site and will be back there in the summer 2011. Outstanding service where the staff tow your caravan to your pitch and fetch it off at end of stay due to very steep hills.
GOOD POINTS; to many to mention really fireworks were brill on friday evening and lady in shop very helpful when hot water value snapped off in pointing us to nearest caravan shop
BAD POINTS: shower heads could do with relining as spraying everywhere, not many hooks for clothes, rubbish bins away behind shop complex, poss to stop pesky seagulls from making a big mess.
Being only 20 mins from j30 of M5 not hard to get to and plenty of places to visit nearby
Can't wait to go in summer to see what beach is like in warm weather and go for a swim in the sea.
Just returned from a 10 night stay at ladram bay, and I must say its the best site I have stayed on.
Positives:- shop, views, availability of food, pitches,
Negatives:- Toilets were looking a bit tatty for a premium site. Entertainment, the entertainers were great, but the material is the same as last year.
The pitches on the ridges were great, but pegging the awning was a nightmare (gravel pitches). We made the mistake of pitching our awning over a manhole and it stunk - beware of pitch 107.
This is probably the best site we have stayed at for our main summer holiday. We are considering staying there again next summer, something we have never done before as we like to try different places every year.
The pitches on the ridges have good views,(a man on a tractor tows your caravan to your pitch in minutes. Take advantage of this as the site is very steep) The toilet block was regularly cleaned and the carvery in the restaurant is great. The evening entertainment was very good and the site had everything needed for a nice family holiday. There was plenty to do in the local area and we could easily have stayed for another week and not struggled for things to do.
One thing to watch, dont follow your sat nav to do the last bit of the journey from the motorway and beware if you are new to caravanning the road to get to the site is steep and narrow. But don't let this put you off what is an excellent site.
Absolutely beautiful site, had 8 fantastic days with the 3 kids, lovely view from caravan window, beach fun for crabbing and boating (dingy brought from shop on site), pub had good view but prices were unreasonable. We went to the Kings Head in Otterton and had a lovely meal well priced and dog friendly. The only down side to this holiday was that dogs are not allowed on beaches in East Devon but other than that we would definitely return. Toilets and showers were ok, shop well stocked and reasonably priced, all staff were very friendly. When going to site put on sat nav AVOID YETTINGTON as it is a one way lane and not good for towing caravans.
arrived and is very commercial (caravan, awning, car, caravan, awning, car etc)
showers have nowhere to put clothes, towels with automatic sensor showers with not a lot of room and not the cleanest, sinks in the mens were terrible with water coming out of the tap where they should do + out of the handle all over the worktop at some rate.
family room running bath does not allow shower to run and when the bath is not running the shower is weak. Bath is clean and a space saver bath (1500 mm)
beach is 2 min walk but pebble(large pebbles) beach and stinks of seaweed at low tide.
Entertainment 'we think' was awful using the same 4 people singing all week and having talent competitions of the holiday makers(you are making your own entertainment)
pay for cash machine £2 charge
shop was good 8 til 8 and was well stocked
we had only take away one night but was reasonable considering it was commercial site
had my sons(4) scooter taken and was not recovered
will not be going back, very disappointed as to the money we had paid for the week
Fairly expensive site if you are camping and only want a pitch as the the price includes for electric hook up anyway. They do have budget pitches in school holidays though. Family entertainments, shop, places to eat, play area and swimming pool are all good. Stunning views from the campsite terraces. Pebbly, steep beach only 5 minutes walk from the camping area with the clearest water you will ever see. Watch out for the seagulls they are a real nuisance and will steal food from children's hands.
We are recently back from Ladram Bay. What a week. The weather was fantastic (which always helps) and the site was superb. Good clean toilet block and showers (on the Ridges). Staff all friendly and always willing to help.
Pebbles Bar and restaurant was good, drinks reasonably priced and what you would expect. The food was excellent and as previous reviews have stated the Carvery was brilliant value for money.
The entertainment staff did a fantastic job and our 4 1/2 year old thought the giant cuddly characters were great.
Swimming pool warm and again good facilities.
The pitch again was a good size with plenty of room. We were hardstanding fully serviced pitch, I think they may have been a design fault though when putting in the hard standing as the tap and drainage is on the awning side of the van, so unless you have a hose and a long waste pipe you will still be filling up and emptying waste every other day. Overall lovely views over the bay and we never felt cramped in at all.
As the weather was so nice we only ventured off the site on 2 days. 1 day we went to Exmouth and overall a nice town with a Tesco (and petrol station as there seems to be a lack of) and all you town shops and fish mongers. The second day when we left Ladram we took our son to Creoly Adventure and I must say well worth £14.50 to get in - FANTASTIC. And for those of you that did not know once you have paid you can return for upto six days after - just make sure you get an arm band when you leave.
Boat hire on the sea front was very good the owner was very helpful with fishing tips. A rowing boat that would easily sit 6 people was £10 for an hour. On the beach though be aware of the sea gulls as I unfortunately got poo'd on 3 times during the week (they say its supposed to be lucky - I didn't feel it)
One other tip with ref to sea gulls - don't leave your rubbish out side your tent or caravan as they will have and spend the early hours diving bombing it from the roof of people caravans! We regularly got woken at 4am but sea gulls dancing on the roof!
Overall a fantastic holiday - plenty of walking up and down to the pebbly beach (make sure you have sensible shoes for walking across the pebbles) Would definitely go back.
This site is one of those sites that takes your breath away when you enter the gates, the view is outstanding. The site itself I would happily give a rounded 8/10 all round, not many bad points at all.
So to review:
Good
Quick check in, 10 minutes from entrance to exit even due to me mixing up our dates and arriving a day early! Friendly staff considering my mistake. Quick to pitch us as we were on Hillside. ( tight spot). Excellent pitch amongst the seasonals, very cliquey as would expect but friendly enough.
Good location for toilet block. Clean toilets, showers. Fantastic carvery. Entertainment was average-great with professional team. Pool was clean and warm enough, arcade, kids club, park satisfied our 7 and 9 yr old. Beach was close and clean with kayaks for hire at £8 per half hour.
Food in Pebbles restaurant was great, best carvery I have had for years, shop sold most things reasonable price, local area good but you need a car to get there.
Bad
Shower pressure is so intense it hurt sensitive areas and my 7 yr old hated it. (on hillside so not sure what other block was like). Not enough bar staff in restaurant and at opening time for food at 6pm it was manic and no tables, chip shop was not good, chips were awful on 3 different occasions.
DOG OWNERS:
The area seems to have a tick problem. The local vets did a great job at removing a few of the blighters free of charge. They said the area had a bit of a problem with them so you may want to treat your furry friend before going but this isn't a huge problem is it!
The site is on a hill so be warned, but even with me on crutches for the last 3 days of my holiday (coastal walk was beautiful till I tripped!) I still managed to get around.
Dont rely on sat nav to not bring you down a dicey narrow lane, check out route before hand and head for Budleigh Salterton, seems to go all way round but it took us 2 miles out and that was a dream considering the road you will go down! Trust me if you are towing.
The site is basically on a very steep hill, with the reception and other facilities at the bottom. You go to the bottom of the hill to book in and wait in the car park for a tractor to arrive to tow you to your pitch, a very nice idea, which save burning your clutch.
We were placed on the Ridges which was at the top of the site and all hard standing pitches with their own water and electric and waste. The views from our pitch was fantastic.
The showers and toilet were very clean when we stayed there no problems at all and all the staff seems friendly. There are kids clubs in the morning and evening as you would expect from a site like this which was ok but a little over priced I would say.
Ladram Bay is a lovely beach at the bottom of the site which was lovely to site and watch the boats being winched in, not sandy but pebbly. There is a nice little adventure park just outside the club house which was ideal if you wanted to keep an eye on the kids while you were having a drink.
The pool was ok and clean when we visited except you do have to pay if your camping or touring. All in all I would go back no problems at all.
Great site. We had a Ladram Diamond caravan which was brand spanking new, very modern and well fitted out. Also had a hot tub which was great fun. It's a family run site, and doesn't have the chavvy feel you get at places like Haven / Hoeseasons parks.
The site is well run, very clean and friendly. The shop is very well stocked and reasonably priced. These is also a cafe that does take away, a chippie and pizza takeaway joint.
Beach is superb and very clean. There is also a play park with a zip wire which the kids loved.
The site let us check out late as nobody was set to arrive in our van, so rather than leave at 9.45 we set off around 12.30 which was really appreciated with 3 kids in tow.
We plan to camp there next time, and the tent pitches were set up on the hillside with great views and looked OK. The toilet block was spotless.
Things to do:
- Walk up the hill and into Sidmouth. It's 2.5 miles and has some stunning views. You can take the 157 bus back to Otterton which leaves every hour (£3.80 though, which did bring me out in a sweat).
- Walk into Budleigh either via the coast path or along the Otter river.
- Crealy adventure park. Graet for young kids.
- The pub in Otterton served good food, however further down the road in the next village is 'the otter' pub. Big garden and a bouncy castle / climbing frame for the kids, and good food.
- If you are curry lovers, then SpiceNite in Exmouth delivered to the park. Menus were in reception, however when we rang they said they no longer delivered out to the park, but ended up doing it for us. Really tasty curries and very fresh (i.E. Don't leave a horrid taste in your mouth for days!). They were all really hot, given they had come from Exmouth.
We stayed at this cracking site for 3 nights in the 'Smugglers' area of the park and the first thing that struck us was the location... Absolutely amazing. It's one of those areas that if you didn't know it existed, you'd probably never stumble across it as it's tucked away off the beaten track. You approach the site down a steepish hill and as the scenery opened up, we did have a genuine 'wow' moment.
Check-in was very simple and straightforward and the staff very friendly... We had someone show us up to our pitch and had the BBQ on the go in less than 15 minutes!
We were blessed with some rather lovely weather (which certainly helps!), but the stand out memorable things for us were (definitely) the location and the beach (which is a naturally sheltered cove and perfect for swimming or taking a boat out which we did one afternoon), the entertainment in the evenings which was of a consistently high standard (we frequented the Three Rocks umm, every evening!) and eating out on the patio at the restaurant overlooking the bay (which I have to say, was an absolutely first class meal).
Our friends had 2 children and they used the adventure playground / soft play / amusements and always brought a smile back with them from the kids club, so I can assume that kids are very well catered for.
We didn't use the pool, the weather was that nice that we preferred to just go to the beach and we didn't use the takeaway (the BBQ ruled on that trip!), but we did use the shop quite a bit... That was well stocked (and surprisingly very reasonably priced) and the cafe we used twice to grab a quick lunch (clean and reasonable value).
Overall we found this site a bit of a gem and couldn't really fault it. Had a totally memorable trip. We've just booked again for early next September, so we're just keeping our fingers crossed with the weather!
BIG site which is ideal for caravans and simular units, but we were messed about 3 times as 2 pitches they sent us to were occupied and the third was a hard standing.
Eventually got pitched and had a nice carvery meal in the Pebbles dinning hall. Good access to the beach and very well stocked shop.
Noisy after dark, a lot of groups all playing different music, and as the site is large and steep everyone seemed to use their cars to drive around!
Showers good, and fairly clean despite a lot of people on site.
