We stayed on this lovely site for 2 nights. We took a pitch in the overflow field which was a bargain at only £20 per night (no EHU) with no questions about tent sizes or number of persons. The site has a beautiful situation with it's own shingle beach. We were surprised at how quiet the beach was when we were there, despite it being peak season and great weather there were only about 10-15 families on the beach. There is also an excellent snack bar just by the beach selling drinks, rolls, paninis, pasties etc. You can hire boats, canoes etc, but we decided to buy an inflatable dingy in the site shop which was equal to 2 hours hire.

The site shop is excellent with good bakery products and an enormous range of items - almost anything you can imagine.

The food in 'Pebbles' restaurant was fantastic - probably the best carvery ever! Excellent playground just outside and an arcade to keep the kids happy while you are waiting.

Swimming pool was great but there is only an inside pool - not an outside one as stated on the UKCS webpage.

The only downside was the state of the toilets and showers. There were only two blocks on the site and a temporary toilet block in the overflow field. The floors were filthy, lots of locks were broken etc

Finally, although the permanent pitches were good, the overflow is not recommend at all. It was so sloping that even on the flattest pitches you roll out of bed, you are not allowed to park near your tent which is a real pain for storage and the field is extremely noisy and dirty due to being pretty much unregulated. There were very large groups, drunk teenagers, lots of people sitting in or by cars with blaring radios or driving fast round the field / coming and going all day.

So to sum up if you get a pitch on 'The Ridges' and do not need to use the site showers or toilets then perfect!

We holiday with two other families and had requested 3 pitches together but due to a few wet days all the pitches were waterlogged and one of our friends had to be pitched several rows behind. Although there seemed to be a few other pitches free the staff in reception were very unhelpful and didn't seem to put much effort into keeping us all together, they offered a full refund but couldn't move us so we had to make do. We were given plastic sheets to put under the awning to keep it dry but even after a few dry days the ground was still soaking due to very poor drainage on the clay soil. The showers were small with no where to put your clothes. On the plus side this is a beautiful spot with fantastic views, pebbled beach great for crabbing in low tide. The pebbles restaurant was fantastic, really nice food and good service. Good shop, well stocked and helpful staff, but watch your change! Arcade great fun for the kids as was the entertainment team

Living in the midlands yet spending over 2 years of my holiday lifetime at Ladram Bay, I have seen many changes over the years. As expected it was one of the 'Special little places' which it is not more but I suppose that is expected with time and progress.

My main reason for my return visits to this site is the ease of launching my small inflatable boat to do a spot of sea fishing but there is now a charge for doing this. The restaurant is not bad but the owner is grumpy. The Bar has now gone silly with the prices. A round for 6 adults will easily see off £25. You cant do a cheap night down at the club house.

If you are used to Caravan Club pitches be warned. This site is very tight and eats clutches with its very steep slopes.

The pool is very good though, and is great when the weather is bad.

The on site shop is very good with corner shop prices.

The cafe is great but breakfast is the best part of a fiver.

The on site chippy is shocking, don't do it, there is an awesome traditional chippy in Budleigh Salterton but you will need to ask a local to find it as it is up a back street.

All in all, this site may be fine for many families, but it is not quiet and tranquil anymore and get more Hi-de-hi by the year.

A very good site all round for our family of 4 - Mum, Dad, 5 yo boy and 4 yo girl.

The caravan itself was excellent. Plenty of space, clean, modern and shower was superb.

Shop was excellent - prices are always a little higher in these places but fresh bread and still warm croissants are worthwhile.

Chip shop was not as good as some reviews suggest - very greasy but adequate for an easy one off meal.

Site is very clean and quiet and very little traffic moving about in the caravan area.

In respect of things to do in the area we recommend the following, all of which we did in the rain and thoroughly enjoyed;

* Rock pooling on beach - even in rain this was fun - hermit crabs, big crabs, fish, shrimps.Etc

* Bicton Park £23 for four and a good easy day only 3 minute drive from site.

* Otterton Mill only 2 minute drive - good for a couple of hours to browse the shops, chat to the baker, have one of the best ever cream teas and teach the kids about making bread.

* Exeter is only half hours drive and boat trip (£12) to Double Locks Pub for lunch is lovely even in rain.

* Sidmouth OK for a stroll and cheaper shop but lots of old folk - bless 'em.

* Budleigh Salterton walk from Otterton Mill along river path about 3 miles. Bus back every hour (No. 157).

* The Otter Pub about 4 minutes drive. Superb food with bouncy castle and play area.

* A walk up to the triangulation point east of the site - a good little adventure and takes about 30 minutes to top with amazing views. My little girl did it so no excuses!

* Kite flying in the adjacent field.

So, loads even within a few minutes although the pool and beach can occupy a fair amount of time.

Well what a gem! After we managed to find it, (don't let satnav take you quickest route from M5, lanes are very procarious if you are towing!)

We pitched on ridges on the 2nd from top on the roadside.(just above toilet block.) Well sized and a fantastic panoramic sea view.

Site has all facilities you could want for a holiday.

For the kids - Pool was great, park was great, kids loved it, arcade, ball pool good, kids club good. Kids entertainment great.

For the adults - pub was good, although beer was flat, entertainment team worked extremely hard all night, big thumbs up to them, traveling acts good apart from one couple, they were dire! Not sites fault suppose! Chip shop ok, site shop reasonably priced as would expect for holiday site, brtead pricey. Good souvenirs. Best carvery I've had, delicious! 6 stars.

Beach is shingle with kayaks to hire. Not too busy for whitweek. Sea clean and calm and a beautiful sight as its in a very private little bay.

Not much to do close by, need to travel to do stuff, we only ventured out once during the week, site was so good.

Bear in mind that site is on a hill so be prepared for a treck up each day, not topo bad when youre staggering out of club though!

Only bad point was the noise. It was very busy and there were a lot of groups.

A great site we would definitely go back to.

We hadn't been to a commercial campsite like this before, so when we arrived we were surprised at how large the site was, as the website (which they say they are in the process of updating) gives the impression of a much smaller site when you view the layout plan. We were checked in quickly and shown straight to our pitch by a site employee in a van.

The tent pitch on The Ridges was fairly level, with the electric hook-up and water included in our pitch price, and the wild grasses and flowers growing around each ridge was a nice touch - it made it feel far less like a large commercial site.

The toilet block was more than adequate in number of cubicles, and the showers were warm enough, strong and not on timers, which was great, but the block had some disadvantages - a lot of broken door locks, some shower cubicles with no hooks to hang clothing, the flooring was permanently slippery and treacherous in the ladies' and the sink taps had fierce jets which soaked you even if you tried to press them gently.

The washing up area is a decent size with enough sinks that you don't have to queue. The walk up from the bottom of the site to the top of The Ridges is quite a long haul uphill - be warned if you plan to carry lots of shopping back up with you!

The fish and chip supper from the site's fish and chippy was truly awful! Our almost inedible fish oozed so much oil our containers had puddles in them - the fish were swimming in oil. Definitely wouldn't recommend it. We came away for a short break so didn't leave the site, and had a barbecue the following evening instead of a site meal. The grocery store was well stocked and well laid out with pretty much everything we needed.

Though dogs are not allowed on the shingle beach (it may be that it states it in the brochure but we didn't see it), there are two dog walking fields which are a fair size, complete with canine entertainment - lots of wild rabbits bobbing around the edges - and the sea views from around the site are amazing, red cliffs and little boats dotted around.

There is nothing to stop people speeding around the roads inside the site - there were quite a few cars whizzing past our pitch in defiance of the site's 10mph speed limit. It seems that, once pitched, you are pretty much left to your own devices.

Verdict? Nice site, reasonable price - but could do much better.

Just got back from a weeks stay at Ladram Bay.

We were given pitch 135 which is on the ridges area and is apparently a new area for this season. The young lad in the tractor took us round to the pitch which was quite large and had its own tap drainage and electric, unfortunately it was also water logged to the point where a small pond had formed from the centre of the pitch back onto the tarmac track. We pointed this out but the lad said that it was a large pitch and we were free to lay it out in any way we wanted to avoid the water. We were also told that this was the only other pitch available.

We moved the van on and got the awning up just in time for the rain to start which went on through the night and well into the next morning. By about 1900 hrs the pond had stretched out to cover the entire pitch and we were walking about in 3-4 inches of water. The terrace below looked like a lake. We informed reception and we were provided with 2 plastic walkways to put over the muddiest parts. Later on a member of staff came and dug some drainage ditches to channel the water over the edge of the terrace. In the morning we couldn't use our awning as the water had squelched through the breathable groundsheet and had got deep enough to get over the top of the groundsheet of the bedrooms and flood them.

After marching down to reception with a mud covered 2 year old as evidence, the staff were on the verge of offering a full refund but then asked if I would consider another pitch that might be free. I was taken round to an all weather gravel pitch which was a small one for a motor home only. I was told that I could pitch the awning on the gravel and park the van on the road. A bit unconventional but it worked and we accepted it straight away. It had a good view of the bay and was spectacular at night in the moonlight

After all that we did actually enjoy our stay at Ladram Bay. The restaurant served really good food as did the cafe and the takeaway. The shop is just fantastic and has a good range of fresh bakery produce and free range meats and also anything else you could possibly need, even wet suits! The prices of everything on the campsite were average and reasonable and a welcome surprise even the bar prices were competitive with any other pub.

The kids soft play area was really good and we had to use arrest and restraint techniques to remove our son from it as he enjoyed it that much. The pool was also good and we used it most days. The beach was not too crowded but we were disappointed to find out that dogs had recently been banned (not mentioned on website) from it so we did not use it as much as we would have liked to. The shop at the beach also had a good range of items. The showers were nice and powerful and clean. The one thing we did notice was that although the site was full to capacity, nothing seemed to crowded and there were no queues for anything.

After the disappointing start we did have a really good holiday. We would come back again but only on the understanding that we wouldn't stay on the Ridges area. Please sort out the drainage on this area its the only thing letting down the site.

Holiday was a complete washout it rained constantly and we admitted defeat after 4 days. However the staff were very friendly and the site did their best to keep the wash facilities clean despite the mud. The bay was beautiful with a pebble beach down some steps.
At night the entertainment was good and catered well for the children (not the type you get at some of the more well known chain of sites).
The chip shop on site was probably one of the best chip shops we have ever eaten out of. We did try the restaurant next door for breakfast where they had a set breakfast menu of about 4 different choices and these were rigid so you were unable to change or pick what you wanted.
We cannot wait to go back next time we have that rare thing called sunshine.

Just spent a week at Ladram Bay - 1st week of summer holidays. Set amidst a stunning location , a really lovely site perfect for families. Not too commercial or too much of a rip off when compared to Haven or other sites. Surprisingly quiet considering peak season and certainly not too rowdy. Great facilities and the staff were all really friendly.
Nightly entertainment was also very good and the kids club and green coats entertained the kids. The pitches are all different sizes - ours were good ones (2 families) but you need to check the size of your tent will fit. The fish & chip shop on site is one of the best we've ever been too and the shop is really well stocked and not overpriced.
Good laundrette facility as well. The main down side for me was the cleanliness of the toilet block on the Ridges - the design / poor drainage of the shower area meant the floors were constantly wet / slippy / dirty despite regular cleaning. The sink taps ran too fast and spilled everywhere and there was nowhere to keep your bags / clothes dry. Wear shorts & flip flops to the showers / toilets! However we were able to get a key for the family bathroom which we used all week. I did pass my comments on to the management -if they can sort the shower block out I will give this site 100% - its great. We will definitely return to this site - missing it already!

This site was a real find. We will be revisiting without doubt. The pitches were on a terrace, nice and flat with lovely sea views. The showers were hot and had a good flow, they were clean and tidy through out our stay. The Bar / Club was excellent and the carvery in the restaurant was well worth the money. Entertainment was very good and kept the kids busy, they can't wait to get back there. The shop was quite big and well stocked.
Our only gripe was the fact that the tourers had to pay for the swimming pool £7.00 for a family of four. I think the statics can use the pool for free! This aside we had a really great time. We have visited Haven many times in the past and this site in our opinion is more than equal to them infact it is less commercialised and more personal. If you want a site with a kids club, family entertainment, private beach etc then do pay Ladram Bay a visit you won't be disappointed.

Been to Ladram Bay for our main two week holiday for five years. Brilliant site, very child friendly, facilities fantastic and to have your own private beach is great! We have watched the site change over these years, some good, some bad. The good is the shower blocks, Pebbles restaurant. The bad is, the entertainment has gone down hill a bit, so has the kids club, the site for touring is being over shadowed by the statics and it isn't so personal anymore. We are trying somewhere different for our main two week holiday for 2008

We arrived late due to car trouble at about ten o'clock on the Friday night the week before bank holiday and the guys on security were really nice, although, when it came to finding a pitch we were left to our own devices which was difficult in the dark. The following morning we realised we'd been lucky to find a space at all as the place was packed, although bank holiday weekend was a joke as people were queueing up in the car park watching people pack up so they could jump on their pitch the minute they rolled off.

The amenities were really good although the smaller shower block really needs updating. Like other reviewers I agree the shop is well stocked and a 60p charge for cashback with no purchases is reasonable when the cash machine charges so much more.

We used the take away a couple of times and every thing we tried was really nice and very reasonably priced. The sunday carvery in the restaurant was ok.

I had to use the launderette on site due to the amount of mud on the first weekend which stains everything badly. I think the price of the machines were the same as any other on the high street and the dryers are ok too. They also had irons available but I didn't use them.

My 10 year old boy loved the site as it was so safe we felt we could let him go off on his own a lot of the time. We usually found him in the arcade (his favourite part of the site)! My 5 year old had a good time in the pool area although I didn't see it and she liked the playground too. She also went to the kids club one evening and really liked that. It gave us a bit of time out too.

My partner loved the beach best as we'd got a kayak on the way down and we were out in it most days, although we will be getting a set of wheels for it because it is a steep climb back up from the beach. Especially with a toddler in tow. He also had a go at jumping off one of the towers which seemed to be a popular challenge for most of the younger (and a couple of the older) guys.

All the staff we dealt with on the site were really helpful and didn't seem at all put out with any request or question asked of them. They were also flexible about how long we stayed as we didn't have a clue when we arrived wether we were staying for one or two weeks although that may have been due to it being the end of the season.

We went into Otterton to a pub opposite the Otterton Mill and had a carvery there on the first Sunday and it was the best meal we had on the whole holiday. The portions were generous, we didn't book the table and it was a pound cheaper per head than on site. We had to go into Exmouth on a couple of occasions for petrol and supplies at the big Tesco which you can't miss on the way into the town and to the sandy beach which was ok but a bit windy the day we went. We also managed to get to Budleigh Salterton a couple of times, although that is a pebble beach, before the car started to give us cause to worry and we were stuck on the site.

Everyone of the fellow campers we met were really lovely and made our first ever camping holiday absolutely brilliant. We will definitely be going back again next year.

Visited the site in mid-September 2007. We were touring by bike and had not pre-booked. Reception was closed when we arrived at about 6:30 but the owner of the cafe told us where we could pitch our tent, and we could pay at reception in the morning. Charge was £8/night (including £2 discount for no car) which we found quite good value.

We stayed for three nights and mostly had a nice stay - aside from a problem with a couple having a screaming row in the middle of the night, which wasn't really the campsite's fault, and they did leave the next morning.

Couple of other noise issues: in our rush when we first got there, we made the mistake of pitching close to the shower block, which has a noisy extractor fan and the lights stay on all night. We moved our tent further up the terraces for the following two nights and no more problems. Secondly, you might not want to stay here if you don't want to be woken at sunrise by screaming seagulls - the joys of the seaside! On the tent terraces, we didn't hear much from the bar / entertainment centre, which is at the other end of the site.

Ladram Bay itself is a beautiful little piece of coastline, beautiful sandstone cliffs and stacks, lots of nice rock pools at low tide, and good access to fantastic views over the bay and surrounding coastline.

The toilets were fine and the showers were fantastic, lovely and hot with excellent water flow, just what two sweaty cyclists needed after riding up from Sidmouth.

The ground on the terraces is a bit hard and quite tough to pitch a tent onto, but they are re-doing this area in Winter 2007 anyway.

Bags of rubbish and food need to be well stored here, as the seagulls are always on the lookout for a snack. We were mystified by the disappearance of our rubbish bag until it became apparent that a gull had managed to pull it out from under the entrance awning of our tent. Watch out for bunnies chewing the guy ropes too.

The shop wasn't very well stocked with fresh food, no meat apart from Wall's sausages and bacon (ugh) and very few fruit and veg, perhaps that is just what you get off-season. It was, however, great for camping supplies, flip flops and tacky souvenirs.

Ladram Bay has a cafe and a restaurant. The cafe is cheap, not particularly nice but it's OK for a quick snack. The restaurant was quite decent, and reasonably priced.

From a cyclist's point of view, it's not the easiest place in the world to get to, coming out of Sidmouth there is a huge 20% gradient to ride over towards Otterton, a long descent and then another quite steep hill up to Ladram Bay. We were a little disheartened by the

Visited for a week in August. Private static a bit in need of tlc but on site facilities ok. Entertainment in the evening sometimes a bit cheesy but they tried hard! Overall we had a good time and would consider going back hopefully to a newer caravan. Didn't like the look of the tent pitches though very crammed in over the Bank holiday so would probably not take the tent.
