A 5 minute stroll over the bridge and you are in the Cotswold market town of Lechlade with everything you could want 3 great pubs, numerous eating places including Italian, Chinese, Indian, Supermarket, Post Office, Chemist, butchers, etc.
Toilets are fine, clean and tidy.
All the swans that are on the Thames probably 80-100 spent the night in the field next door.
Large flat field, well kept. The toilet/shower block although dated was always clean and well stocked with soap and accoutrements required for daily ablutions when we used the facility, but the showers are of the annoying push button type. Thinking more about that, we tended to shower in the evenings after a day out so perhaps we got in there after they'd been cleaned.
Gated access to the site via barrier/keyfob arrangement, quiet in the evenings.
During the period we stayed there was an irresponsible motability scooter driving dog owner walking (driving) her dog on the non-electric part of the site, later we noticed dog excrement on the grass which would not be very pleasant if you were to pitch your tent on top of it. However, that is the fault of the dog owner, not the site owner.
Be careful with your bookings - if you decide to leave early you will not be getting any kind of refund. Times are hard for folks I guess, but you may be better to book in small blocks, ie. 3 day stints or suchlike to avoid disappointment. We lost out on one nights fee as we had to leave a day early due to trouble back at mill, £16 we could really have done with.
When you leave, it is well worth visiting Monica's Plaice chip shop - over the bridge to town, left at lights, straight across the road, you wont be disappointed!
We had a very wet weekend here in June but still managed to have a good time. The site is quite small, but nice and flat, with good soil so we had no trouble with tent pegs, and it drained quite well considering the weather.
The location is good as you can get to the river without going on the road at all, and then can get into Lechlade via a road with a pavement. I know that other reviewers have mentioned the traffic noise: it is on a fast road and there is some noise but it isn't overpowering.
Recommendations for dog-friendly places to visit include the Halfpenny pub in Lechlade, or if you want something to eat, turn right along the Thames and take a stroll past St Johns Lock to the Trout (left at the bridge), which can be a bit touristy but is a great place to watch the world go by.
I wouldn't say that this is the most stunning campsite in the world, but everything worked fine, everyone was friendly, and it was a great base for mooching around Lechlade, the Thames and the surrounding area. We'll be back.
I have just returned from a weekend camping at the Bridge House Campsite and I thoroughly recommend this site. The location is great as it's 5 mins walk to the Thames and the lovely town of Lechlade.
I was in a camper and my friends in a tent and the staff ensured that we were together. The pitches are a great size and there's also lots of room to put up awnings or gazebos.
There are lots of pitches with electricity - unfortunately my lead wasn't long enough but the warden turned up immediately and leant me an extension.
I felt the need to write a review as there seems to be a few negative comments and I really wanted to stress how positive my experience was of this site. I'll certainly be returning soon!
Bridge House Campsite is listed here as being in Gloucestershire. In fact it's located just inside Wiltshire. The border is the River Thames itself, circa 200 metres from the campsite towards Lechlade. The beauty of this site is it's proximity to the river, within a short walk across the fields. Lechlade is just over the bridge from there. (I wouldn't advise walking along the busy, unpathed road).
The campsite has good facilities. The showers are good and strong -but- the shower trays are dangerously slippery, this needs to be addressed. Everything else on the site is A. O. K. It's in a wonderful location. The surrounding open/flat farmland means the wind can be a problem, but there are more sheltered areas of the field for camping, just ask the warden.
If you are looking for a central location for touring the Cotswolds e. G. Cotswold Wildlife Park (brilliant) then this is the campsite for you. The tariff @ September 2011 was £7 PPPN + £2/night electric if required. Very reasonable, especially for the lone traveller. Dogs are free.
Lechlade is lovely. Our visit coincided with David Walliams' charity Thames swim. Got some great photos of 'Lou' :-) swimming towards the first lock on his journey. There's a good chippy in Lechlade and some great pubs. All good value.
Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park Campsite offers a total countryside experience. Discover a range of affordable family holiday options, including glamping accommodation, safari tents, camping pods, hardstanding caravanning and motorhome pitches, grass camping pitches and lodges (with private hot tubs). Here is a fair and detailed review of Bridge House campsite. I visited recently for two nights with two children under four and friends who have a three year old and a dog.
Good points:
Near Lechlade which is a beautiful village with a selection of pubs and antique shops (if you like that sort of thing!)
Clean facilities including hot showers with good pressure.
Allow dogs (but on lead at all times)
Well maintained pitches.
Washing up area.
Bad points:
Lots of notices warning against breaking their numerous rules. Laminated signs at every turn!
Just back from a long weekend in a camper van (mine but my friend sleeps in it) and tent (me). You can't fault the place.
Campsite is two minutes from the Thames Path and five minutes from the town centre. Lechlade is one the most attractive parts of the Thames Path (I know because we have done it all) and the town has a number of pubs and plenty of places to eat plus a Londis which is seemingly open most of the time.
Interesting places nearby worthwhile visting are Kelmscott Manor and Buscot Park. Staff on the site are friendly and helpful, pitches are ok and facilities are good - nice hot showers. Rates are good - £7 per person per night plus £2 electric hookup.
Couple of possible niggles. There are two showers and four toilets in the gents and ladies so that could be a problem if the site is busy. Also there are a set of motion sensitive lights near the shower block which if you are in a tent nearby light it up like floodlights on a sports ground.
If you are a light sleeper and staying in a tent be aware that the site is right next to a main road so during the week you'll be kept wake late into the night and woken up early by traffic noise.
So if you are planning on staying here pack the earplugs and sleeping pills. Otherwise recommended.
Visited for a Saturday and Sunday night, and was recommended the site by someone on this forum. Friendly owners, who will lend you ice-blocks and refreeze yours if required.
Nice size pitches, and they are happy for you to choose your own. Wasn't many left when we arrived on Saturday as it was pretty busy, but lots of people went home on Sunday.
Clean toilets and showers, lots of hot water (in fact the showers were almost too hot as no temperature control, so took a while to get used to!).
Lots to do in local area, would love to visit again as we didn't get to do much due to copious amounts of rain on Sunday. Walk through cows field to town is fine (mind the cow pats), and the first pub you come to on the river looks great. There was several ducks with ducklings, swans etc, and the pub had gorgeous hanging baskets and looked a perfect place to sit out and have a drink. Rain spoiled our chance to do that though!
Great campsite in a super location, and would definitely recommend.
I have mixed reviews about this campsite. Overall I would give it 3 out of 5.
I stayed here in early August 2011 and it was fairly quiet.
The Likes
The campsites location, Set in the Cotswolds its right near a village of Lechlade which is just located over a bridge going over the River Thames. Not far away are the hills full of history. There are plenty of nice pubs in Lechlade too.
The camping field is clean and tidy.
In a good way you pay per person per night so it was ok for me on my own.
The staff were friendly and happy to help, they lent me a hook up extension.
Dogs go free.
Now what lets it down, the bad points.
There is an awful gate to access in and out if you want to avoid the road, it's not very good for me never mind those with disabilities.
People were poaching in the field opposite so every now again you can hear gun fire.
Paying per person per night is not that brilliant if you have more than one or two people.
The electric hook-up points are confusing and can prove tricky and there are not many water taps.
I do not rate the showers and toilets that much either, they are just ok.
Some of the pitches need re laying, saying that I found a good spot and they did state that they will fill any hole in the ground if need be.
Conclusion. All in all if they sort out that gate and do something with the toilets there are only two showers, add in more electric points I would give this site a higher rating. It's not a bad campsite but could be better.
But be warned you need a deposit of £20 to camp here, not a good idea if you are on a budget. I am not sure if that is per person as well.
Great campsite, very clean loads of hot water, electric hook ups. Very helpful, lovely part of the country. Would recommend this site to anyone.
Will return again this year. Located next to the Thames. Nice shops and pub in walking distance and loads of places to eat at lunch time or in the evening.
Only a few miles from some of the nicest village in the county. Good mini market in the village which stocks everything you would need
Was here for the airshow but did not go, stayed on the site rested and took in the views and the nice weather. Their are some great walks along the river
You can rent boats from the local boathouse.
