A fairly basic campsite with nothing but a toilet / shower block and washing-up point. However, it's surrounded by lovely views and nice walks (if you've got a dog or a pushchair, you'll have to lift them over a gate to get to the Thames Path).
Lechlade is a quaint old town, 5 minutes walk away, with pubs, antique shops and at least one 'Ye Olde Tea Shoppe'. Access to the town is across the field to the bridge, as there is no footpath on the main road. There is ample scope for walks along the Thames Path in both directions.
The toilet block isn't the best, but nor is it the worst and it's far from dirty although the toilet bowls are a bit stained. Road noise isn't an issue either.
Finding a pitch is strange. Whilst it's just field like most tent areas, it got busy enough that there wasn't enough room for everyone to just pitch around the perimeter. You just need to pick a free spot anywhere as there are no tracks or paths across the field to obstruct. Just ensure you don't block the last route to any part of the field.
We stayed over Easter & booked late so were pleased to get an ehu pitch. The site is in a beautiful setting with views across a field to the Thames & the barges, with the church in the background.
For such a lovely setting the site needs to smarten up a bit, the field is very uneven & the ehu are on one side with no obvious pitches. There are some ehu in the middle of the field too but the units are parked all over the place & even though we had a pitch reserved it was impossible to see where! We sort of plonked ourselves where we though we wouldn't block peoples views!
The toilets & showers were well not very nice .. we didn't shower the whole weekend that should tell you everything you need to know!
Its a real shame cause it would be a gorgeous site with just a bit of money chucked at it! If you are happy to use all your own facilities it'll be fine & it is a 5 min walk to the riverside pub!
This site is basically a large field adjacent to the main road which runs through Lechlade, on the south side of the River Thames. However, while fairly busy during the day the road is quiet at night and traffic lights at the river bridge control the speed of traffic so there is very little noise. The field is also set back from the road and bordered by trees and shrubbery. A very nice setting and only a 5 minute walk to the river and bridge, beyond which is the town. It was also pleasing that other campers respected the peace and quiet after dark.
Lechlade is a haven for antique lovers with several antique shops selling everything from small collectables to furniture. There seems to be more pubs, restaurants, and hotels than residences - or maybe all the residents live in the pubs and hotels, but it is certainly a quaint town in a lovely river setting with miles of the Thames Path to walk along, boat hire, and of course, riverside pubs.
The campsite does not have a shop but a small supermarket in the town seems to provide all requirements. I was particularly pleased that they catered for individuals or couples by selling food in smaller quantities as well as larger family packs. Travelling alone, I often find I have to buy much more food than I require and then waste half of it because it won't keep. There is also a hardware shop in the town selling a few camping bits and pieces.
A small section of the 'field' was reserved for electric hook-ups on marked pitches but the main field was just a case of finding a spot and staking your claim. The field was flat and the grass kept short but not manicured. It was a pleasure not to be ankle deep in wet grass cuttings! There was no pressure to arrive or leave at any particular time, the owner being very flexible.
It is a fairly basic site but with all the usual requirements, however, I have to say that the toilets were the dirtiest I have experienced even though my first visit was immediately after the 'cleaners' left. The toilet pans do not look as if they have seen any bleach in years and you wouldn't want to touch the loo brushes even with Marigolds on, but the floor was clean and the washbasins were clean - although no provision of soap or hand dryers - but at only £4 per night as a single person they were moderately more convenient than a bucket in the tent! A shame really because if there was a clean and modern toilet block this site would be pretty close to ideal.
