This was our 3rd visit and it is by far our favourite site. Gareth who runs it could not be more helpful. The site itself is lovely. Riverside flat field with a track (perfect for kids' bikes) running back to an always clean loo block. Facilities are a bit of a walk but there are portaloos along the way if you prefer and to me, location and atmosphere is so much more important!
Steam train rides from the site are a bonus and the pub in the village The Eagles Inn is reasonable and good pub grub and we were fine with lots of kids.
You can have a fire and Gareth or his son will bring you a pit and logs. There was no noise at night other than people chatting and enjoying themselves and I never felt we bothered anyone which is always a good feeling with so many children! (This visit there were 8 adults and 8 kids but I have also been as a family of 5 with an 8 week old baby)
I shall be back every year as it simply (so far) cannot be beaten for location, price, atmosphere and general good fun! We try new sites all the time but this one simply ticks all of our boxes.
I do however recommend rock pegs as ground can be tough!
We visited this site for 3 nights at the beginning of June. We were greeted by the very friendly owners who told us we could choose our own pitch wherever we wanted. At that point there was only 1 other tent and a caravan on the site so we had plenty of choice! We pitched our tent right next to the river which had a beautiful view across to the mountains, it was perfect. It was lovely to just have the trees behind us and the river, sheep, birds and mountains in front of us! On the other side of the campsite is the railway line which has a little steam train that goes into Bala. The trains only run 4 times a day and there is no noise to be concerned about. The station itself is lovely and has a little cafe inside as well. I also liked the fact you could have a campfire (unles you're on the hook up pitches) and we hired the firepit and bought 2 bags of wood for £11 from the owners. He brings it all to your pitch for you.
The main toilet block is at the site entrance so it was a 3 minute walk for us (there are portaloos for the people who are at the far end of the site). The facilities were perfectly clean all the time and even though there are only 2 showers for men and 2 for women (plus a disabled / family shower) neither of us ever queued once to use them. Water is hot all the time and the showers are free which is such a bonus. There are 2 plug sockets where you can use your own hairdryer (there isnt one there already). There's also a freezer for your ice blocks and 3 sinks for washing up. If you need to, there is a washing machine and dryer as well.
Bala town is lovely and only a 10/15 minute drive. There is a Co-Op and Spar for all your essentials but try to go to the local butchers / veg shops etc which sold lovely local produce. Bala lake is beautiful and the car park is very reasonably priced at £2 for 4 hours so you can have a long walk.
The local pub in the village serves amazing homemade food, I would highly recommend it. Its only a 15 minute walk from the campsite.
We were so lucky with the weather during our stay, it was hot and sunny all weekend which made our visit so much better but even without it, I think this site is just lovely. Highly recommended.
Welcome greeting straight away by a young lady, given choice of pitch and escorted round site to see what pitches were on offer.
Very laid back atmosphere.
Was initially concerned about the toilet/shower block only having 2 showers. However they were always very clean and I never had to queue the whole week. Showers had constant hot water :)
We pitched up next to river bank near 3 portaloos. Great pitch, great views.
Did get a bit annoying with people coming in and out of loos banging the door. And at times they were a bit too dirty to use, but this was due to the ill manners of other campers.
We has a lot of rain and was very cold for time of yr :(
I took 4 dogs which was not even a problem, quite often 2 maybe 3 is the limit on other sites, plenty of open space to walk them.
Went on the train to bala, very nice but quite expensive I thought.
Bala it's self has a coop and butchers, and quite a few other quaint shops.
Didn't fully explore the area directly off site as didn't take our map, and was not sure which route to take, downside for us were every footpath was through a field full of sheep/lambs which ment dogs had to remain on leads. Had we of asked the owners and staff about local walks I am sure they would have been very helpful.
Once again love the site, will definitely go back, hopefully in better weather conditions :)
We stayed here over the May Bank Holiday and we were right down the bottom of the site where the small stream meets the main river. There was a small group of us and the owners are quite happy to take private family groups. The owners are very friendly and relaxed. The pitches down the far end of the site are a fantastic spot and you can barely take your eyes of the view across the valley to the mountains opposite. We were fortunate enough to visit when there weren't many other campers so the site was quite quiet.
The facilities were very clean and tidy although they are a bit of a walk if you are down the far end of the site. But if you like it quiet, then it's worth going down the far end of the site and you'll just have to walk to the facilities. The small steam train from the site to Bala is very pleasant and relaxing. There is also a great walk up the mountains nearby.
The views from there over Bala lake are amazing. We booked to go to the Eagles Inn pub which is a 15 minute walk up the road and worth a visit. There are no playground facilities but to be honest, the kids didn't miss them. However, what was disappointing was the amount of restrictions the Snowdonia authorities appear to have imposed on this campsite. Camping is about freedom, relaxation and switching off, and campsites nor campers should be ruled by local authority bureaucracy. The Snowdonian authorities need to reconsider their restrictions. That said, overall, a great campsite if you want to switch off from it all.
This was our first holiday in our Mazda Bongo Campervan. Really relaxing site with clean facilities, lovely friendly owners.
Situated next to stream with Railway on other side which runs straight into Bala town around outskirts of Bala lake. Pub with in walking distance which serves good pub food.
A decent site with hardstandings near to the river
With a nice walk to the river where we saw a kingfisher, however when we there the other fields were closed off, nice views of the mountains and the steam railway, toilet facilities were very clean and nice hot water, however I think the price is a bit steep for how big the site is, just big enough for 5 units, we like it quiet and it was that. Good for a few days but not 8 days like we were there, also the bins were overflowing
Spent 6 nights here. Was greeted when we arrived by the owners daughter, who was very friendly. Was able to choose our own pitch. Pitched on the grass area just behind the river pitches. Nice level pitches.
Toilet block consisted of 2 showers and 2 wc, all hot water included in price, only had to queue for a shower behind my own children. They were clean and tidy. Plenty of toilet roll.
There is the use of a freezer and there is a laundry room, although didn't use the latter. Campsite was not busy, a few coming and going.
Had a problem with midges for 1 night, but we had been out for the day and it was quite late when we were getting our campfire going. A really nice, level site. We paid £150 for 2 adults, 3 children, large tent which I thought was reasonable.
We stayed here for two nights 3rd 4th August, we arrived at the site about 13:30 and were met by Gareth the owner, we were booked in and away we went to get settled, we requested a pitch by the fascilities block as one of our number was frail.
The toilet/shower block was very clean and the shower/wet rooms were excellent. The groundsman was very helpful in assisting us with are awning, Thank You! and we soon got it sorted out,
The site overall was very well kept clean and tidy a stroll down the river bank after lunch was very pleasant and the proximity of Bala light railway in brilliant,
Just at the entrance, the Local pub sell essentials and the garage on the main road is expensive but convenient,
Gas is available at the farm supplies yard just by the garage and the prices are very reasonable.
Bala is a 15 min drive away and is a beautiful village and of course the lake is stunning.
All in all, we had a very good weekend, a very good site with lots to do both there and close by,
Highly recommended to anybody looking for a nice easy going break
Just returned from this site and felt the need to add a review. As everyone else has said its a beautiful site and the owners are very friendly.
Site.
The site has a small section near the entrance which is used for electric hookups. The most beautiful part of the site is lower down where you can pitch alongside the river and have a campfire at night using the fire pits provided. If you are on the hook up section then a fire is not permitted.
The site is very quiet and well run, there was no litter to be seen and the grass was mowed so looked tidy. Some of the pitches are not quite level but its a slight gradient which wasn't a problem for us.
When you enter the site there are a few pitches in the dip on the left which offers a sheltered option, then you carry on through a gate and pass the electric hookups on your right, then it opens up into a large field where you can camp wherever you like, the lane then narrows by the river where you can camp alongside it.
We used hookup on our visit, but I was still nice when the owner gave us a choice of 4 pitches to choose from.
Facilities
The toilets and shower block is near the entrance to the site, so if you are at the far end of the site it is a fair walk for a shower, a lot of people drove to the showers when we were there.
There are a few portaloos at the bottom of the site, but as I didn't use them I cant comment.
The main toilet block was spotlessly clean at all times, and had a notice saying if they were not as clean as you expected to let them know and they would clean them again. Cant get any fairer than that.
Inside the gents toilets there were 2 urinals, 2 toilets and 2 showers, the showers were hot and free, the ladies again had 2 showers 3 toilets and the disabled toilets had a shower also.
There was a utility room with washing machine and dryer, and 3 kitchen sinks for washing up.
The Area
The site is about 10 minutes drive from Bala itself, where you have the lake for water sports, and a selection of shops and bars.
The nearest supermarket is the co-op which is in Bala.
The nearest pub is a 10-15 min walk from the site, we didn't use it so cant comment.
Just up the road from the site is a walk which takes you up the aran range 0f 3 beautiful mountains, the view from which I hear is awesome.
Barmouth is a 40 minute drive if you want a day at the beach.
Criticism
The only fault I can find is to do with the showers, having only 2 is not many for the number of people who use the site, in the morning it did get busy so a wait may happen
Overall a fantastic site, you wont be disappointed if you visit.
Just returned from a lovely weekend at this cracking site. My wife, son and I arrived, checked in at the reception and as it was fairly quiet, pitched in a nice, grassy area, just a short distance from the river, with only 2 or 3 other tents for company.
Our son had a great time wading and paddling in the river and the weather was glorious. Gareth, the owner, gave us an old wheel inner, logs/kindling and we got a good fire going, just in time to ward off a plague of midges that arrived in the evening.
The following day (Saturday), following a nice steam train ride by the lakeside, our privacy was compromised somewhat by a deluge of arrivals, who for some reason, were happy to have (plus give everyone else) very little space, just to be close to the river. The irony is that the massive, raised field just behind our tent was practically empty. When we come again, we'll definitely be pitching there.
Pros
- Friendly owners
- Gorgeous location
- Not ridiculously packed with campers
- Loads of space
- River is great for kids
- Bala Lake Railway is next door to the site
- Campfires allowed
- Not too hard on the wallet
Cons
- People do seem obsessed with the river and seem happy to sacrifice space and comfort, just to be near it.
- There doesn't appear to be any rules regarding noise at night. We had a large (albeit very friendly) group of around 10 young people who were chatting and laughing well into the early hours of the morning. Not ideal if you have small children.
- The toilet/cleaning facilities could be better. They are absolutely spotless, but need to be bigger considering the size of the site and only really benefit the handful of people, lucky enough to pitch near to them. They need to be located more centrally, rather than just be at one end of the site. For those at the other end of the site, there are portaloos. Admittedly, they are probably the cleanest portaloos I've ever seen. However, they did struggle to cope with the number of people using them at one point. My advice; bring a bucket!
-Some form of on site shop would be handy.
This is a terrific site and arguably the best I've been to. The location is truly beautiful and a good base from which to explore Snowdonia. There's loads of space, particularly in the top field, plus nice nooks and crannies if you want a bit more privacy. Just be sure to get there early to have a better chance of nabbing those spots.
The owners are friendly, and give you lots of info/advice on arrival.
The Bala Lake Railway next door is great for a day out. You can stop halfway down the line by a nice, lakeside (shingle) beach and have a picnic, before jumping on the next train and heading to Bala itself.
We came to this site following a good review in 'The Rough guide to Camping in Britain'. It's comments were absolutely spot on.
Very quiet site. Next to the small steam railway line to Bala, the trains aren't a problem as there's only a few every day. The toilet/shower block needs a bit of updating although there was alway hot water and a washer/dryer. No local shops except for some lovely fresh eggs nearby. There's a local pub which also sells a couple of essentials but isn't always open. Good location for exploring the area. Not easy to find if you've forgotten to bring the directions!
Lovely site with beautiful views to the mountains.
Owners were very friendly, checking in went smoothly and we were invited to pitch wherever we wished. Having checked that the river didn't normally flood, we chose to pitch right alongside.
Toilet/showers and portaloos were always clean, hot water plentiful.
Unfortunately the weather then decided to turn very nasty and over the next three days we experienced torrential and non stop rain. Having returned from a visit to the Eagles Inn one evening we found that the babbling brook had turned into a raging torrent.
My partner went to the owners and they were so helpful, we were offered a night in their caravan or indeed a stay with them in their house. We made the decision to move the tent up the field (mainly because we would of had a sleepless night anyway worrying about what was happening to it) and were very relieved to find us still in one piece in the morning.
We appreciate that the weather conditions were very unusual so please don't let my tale of woe put you off pitching by the stream. We were just very unlucky!
We stayed here at the end of May and were lucky to have glorious weather. We'd booked ahead so we were expected. On arrival, we were told we could site ourselves anywhere we liked, were shown the facilities and given a fact sheet.
We were very happy camping right beside the river with fabulous views all around us to the mountain ranges nearby. On our second day, we climbed part way up the Arans from the path in the village and the view across to Llyn Tegid was spectacular.
The facilities in the main block and also in the portaloos were kept very clean.
We were very upset to hear that the campsite is under threat of closure so hope that this won't happen, as we will most definitely want to return there. We couldn't have been made more welcome by the very friendly owners and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes a peaceful site in a wonderful area.
We stayed a night here with our touring caravan en route to the Lleyn peninsula. The owners were helpful and friendly and were able to find us an overnight pitch at short notice despite it being a bank holiday weekend. This was in marked contrast to other sites contacted who applied a 3-night minimum stay policy. As it was we occupied a EHU pitch which was due to be occupied by another pre-booked arrival on the day of our departure.
We were not on hard standing but adjacent to those who were. Our part of the site was level and a short walk gave access to the fresh water tap, soakaway and shower / toilet / washing up block. Although the latter was small (2 showers), it was modern and clean.
I enjoyed a very nice hot shower on the Friday evening but on the Saturday mid-morning there appeared to be a shortage of hot water. This may have been a temporary situation, as I only stayed one night I can't comment.
Elsewhere on the site the toilets provided appeared to be portaloos.
The site welcomed dogs on leads and was a very popular site for dog walkers, all of whom seemed to be careful to clear up dog mess while we were there.
It is an extensive site with some beautiful river side pitches and large open fields where children could play games etc.
The real pull for the children however was the Lake Bala Steam Railway situated adjacent the EHU pitches. Our children were riveted by the engines, carriages and all the steam train paraphernalia. Were we staying longer I'm sure we would have taken a ride on the train.
There are lovely views of the surrounding hills and countryside. A short walk uphill on footpaths leading south out of the village yields great views of Bala Lake and surrounding mountains.
Beautiful campsite with idyllic views and a river perfect for children in that it was shallow with a low bank. We camped over a very cold Easter weekend and a camp fire was an essential for us so we could still enjoy being outside to keep an eye on the kids.
The cafe/station shop sells the basics as does the pub in the village. Well worth a visit for an excellent meal. Don't be put off by the dated menu the food is superb and the staff very welcoming.
Toilets and showers were clean but basic with no heating. Most of the time not an issue although it was too cold for me to brave testing them! There are also portable loo in the camp fire field that are the cleanest and most well maintained I have come across.
The steam train operates from the station at the site entrance and is a fascinating thing to see.
This for us is a very near perfect site and I look forward to returning ASAP.
