This was our first camping trip and after staying here for 3 nights it certainly wont be our last! Our family group of 4 large tents were able to set up camp together in the bottom field by the river which was fab at night sitting round the campfire. Gareth is very helpful and always seems to be driving around the campsite checking everyone is OK. This is a beautiful site with good facilities. The main block of toilets and showers always seemed clean and had plenty of loo roll! There is also plug sockets for hairdryer/straighteners if you feel you can't live without these! There is a coin operated washing machine and dryer in this main block. There is also another shower at the main house but I did not see this. The portaloos in the bottom field also were cleaned often. There is a little cafe at the Station just at the entrance to the campsite. There is a nice pub and restaurant within 10 mins walk, which my husband and men in our group visited! Bala Lake is a short drive away and some of our group hired a kayak. Would recommend this site and will definitely be going back!
I took a group here for the bank holiday weekend at the start of May and we had a great time.
The site was not full over the weekend, it did get busier but we were never crammed in at all.
Reception is at the house and arrival went smoothly and off we went to find our own pitch.
I met a group of people on the field who were friendly so we pitched up near them on the lower section.
This areas toilets are 2 portacabin type which were cleaned very well and never got in a mess, well the guys didn't. I couldn't speak for the female one!
We had some rain over the weekend but the site drained well, the sun came out a bit as well over the weekend and you could hear the ground draining.
Main toilets, showers and washing up near the main house were great. Also washing machine and drier.
Disabled toilets/wetroom also in this section.
You can buy logs off the owner, campfires are allowed but a pit (old wheel) and concrete block is required (off owner).
More logs can also be purchased in Bala for a bit less money.
We went to LLangollen to do white water rafting, had a look around the town down there. About 45 mins away.
We also walked from the site to Bala and had a meal down there, it took over 1 hour, probably closer to two.
We also took out an inflatable raft on lake bala.
Some people were pitching on the edge of the river as well on a small section, looks v nice and there is a higher section away from the river.
EHU is available for caravans and motorhomes and hardstanding near the entrance.
Following on from a successful stay at this campsite a few weeks ago I wanted to go back for a second visit as I enjoyed it so much. Gareth was just as helpful and although the campsite was busy the facilities were more than adequate - ladies with 2 x wc's and shower in main block, spotless and would put my bathroom at home to shame, men - wc, shower and urinals in main block, loo and separate shower near the main house and another two loo's further down by river!). Also a disabled loo and walk in shower. Very handy washing facilities open to campers - 2 x kitchen sinks and also dryer and washing machine, all of which were very handy as we were in a tent.
Would definitely recommend this campsite - scenery so beautiful and a peaceful setting and yet still within walking distance of pub and the quaint narrow gauge railway station. Great break. Wish there were more campsites like this, I guess I'll have to visit the same one again!
We stayed here for 8 days. Ideal location. Right next to the lake railway station. Short drive to coast, mountains and main market towns. Lots to see and do. The site itself is pleasant enough. Very quiet due to time of year. Good job. The main amenity block was closed for the first 6 days. Clean, constant hot water and Adequate when it did, it has only 3 showers and 3 loos (male 1, female 1, disabled 1). Only 2 vans and 2 tents on site when it was opened, so it coped. More than 6 would have pushed it, more than 10 and it wouldn't have. No barriers, gate open 24/7, warden appears occasionally. Owner lives in Wrexham. Great food at The Eagles 1/2 mile away. Petrol in village garage only 2p litre more than Tesco, nearest shopping BALA (6 miles)
We think the Site has great untapped potential but at the moment, in my opinion, it caters for Motorhomes and Camper Vans best.
There not much to say about this site that hasn't already been said. Upon entering the site, there is the caravan CS site as well as a small area adjacent, which contains the main toilet block/laundry/washing up facilities. Behind the CS area is a large field which can take lots of tents/vans without you being on top of each other. There is a further smaller field on a lower level which has water and portaloos. Behind that are two much smaller fields. All three fields on the lower level are next to the river which provides an idyllic setting.
Gareth is very helpful and friendly and over the weekend he had an assistant who was equally so. So much so, that on the one day it blowed a storm, he went round during the day to check the guy ropes of tents and awnings.
In bad weather you will have to walk across some mud to get to the facilities block, but then on the up side we did see it being cleaned at three different times of the day. Hot water is plentiful, whether you're showering or washing up.
Bala itself has the basics and you will find a very well stocked Tourist Information adjacent to the Leisure Centre at the southern end of the town.
All in all a great little site. This is the second time we have stayed and it won't be the last.
We have just come back from our 2 night stay! This was the first time as a family that we had camped. We found the site really inviting with some great views.
When we arrived the owner (Gareth) greeted us and gave us all the necessary paper work along with information of emergency telephone number of doctors / vets etc. It also had addresses of takeaway restaurants and pubs.
We was allowed to pitch where ever we liked, so we chose a nice area close to the loos and with the best view. There is a stream that runs alongside the campsite. We had our 3 year old son with us so we couldn't pitch too close!
The weather was nice when we arrived, but they did have alot of rain the night before so the grass was boggy, and Gareth told us the best areas to pitch where the grass didnt seem to be so muddy.
Once pitched, we decided to go for a walk and make the most of the weather. We walked round the site and was amazed of how clean it was! My son wanted to do a little fishing in the stream, so he had a splash round while we watched (didnt manage to catch anything!) Then we drove down to bala lake(about 10 min drive), which is beautiful, and well worth a little stroll round!
While we were there we also got the steam train (the station is situated behind the site) into bala which was a nice change rather than driving. We found it a little expensive as adults was £7.50 return and Children under 5 was free. The walk from the station in Bala town centre is about 10 min walk but is pretty flat.
I must say that in the 2 nights we stayed we crammed in alot, and didnt spend that much money. The weather didnt stay to good for us this time but we will be definitely be going back the weather is better!
Perfect for tents. Pitch down on the bottom field by the river, which is pretty and shallow with sheep grazing on the opposite bank and stunning views.
There are two porta-cabins with toilet/sinks so no need to trek uphill to the main block!-which is very handy, and plenty of standpipes.
Really relaxed and friendly as everyone has said, Gareth is great and cares for his campers.
It rained all the time we were there unfortunately and it can get very muddy which was a shame but we would definitely go back to this site.
All in all a Very Good Campsite in a beautiful setting.
We have just come back from our fourth visit to this site. Once again we can't fault it. Gareth is very friendly and unbelievably helpful. He came down to the tent once a day to deliver fire wood and to check we were happy with everything. On the evenings he wasn't staying on site he even left us his mobile number so we could contact him.
The facilities were exceptionally clean, the main showerblock is at the top of the site and even has a wet room (fantastic when you have five children under the age of 6). There are also laundry facilities within this block. There is also an overflow shower up by the main house and M and F portaloos in the bottom field where we camped, which were kept cleaner than most showerblocks we have seen.
The pitches aren't marked out so we just found a spot we fancied and set up our little community of 4 large tents and a camper van. Its a very spacious site so we didn't have any neighbours, kids and dogs just did as they liked for four days (total freedom). The small stream running by the bottom of the site is great for kids paddling and fishing and in places is deep enough to swim.
Would highly recommend this site to anyone who likes to get away from it all. Very peaceful and stunning views. Can't wait to go back next year.
The campsite was very clean. The showers were red hot and clean every time we used them. There is a washing machine and a dryer for use of £1. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Only disappointment was that the river didnt have any bigger fish in, only tiddlers but the kids loved to play in it. Having the railway onsite was fine, nice to hear, good discount for campers. Set in beautiful scenery only 10 mins from Bala would definitely return.
Visited this campsite for the first time last weekend and absolutely loved it. The facilities are quite basic - showers though were hot and clean and all facilities kept clean, neat and tidy by the owners.
Gareth, the owner is an absolute star - he works throughout the day making sure his campers are happy and have all they need. He's a really friendly guy and works hard to make everyone feel welcome.
The site is mid level, with the bottom level being by the stream/river, in which children can paddle, fish or play and adults can relax.
I'd definitely recommend this site for adults and children alike. It has the bonus of allowing fires and if you get the weather you won't want to go home!
This was our second trip to Bwch Yn Uchaf and we had yet another fantastic weekend camping!
The site is close to Bala Lake and is next to a little river which is lovely to camp next to.
The owner - Gareth - is extremely welcoming and friendly. He's also very laid-back and this is a breath of fresh air, especially as we hate those sites where so many rules and regulations apply.
Gareth brings you a fire pit and lots of wood and kindling so you can light your own camp fire every night!
Each time we've been there have been very few insects, if not any - which is a bonus for me as I'm always bitten to death! It's like they all get together before I arrive and conspire against me.
The facilities are fantastic. There are two decent hot showers in the ladies - one being disabled. Three sinks and two toilets. I've found them to be immaculately clean every time.
There's a separate area where you can wash up and I think there's a washing machine and dryer.
If you want to get out and about, there's lots of lovely walks close by and a good local pub within walking distance.
I love it here and will be back next year no doubt.
Nice site and reasonably priced - £10 per night for two adults.
The owner was around and about quite a lot to see how people were doing and if they were happy which was nice.
The toilet and shower facilities were well maintained with free showers which is great. It was nice to see some soap on the basins and the fact that they had a shower room adapted for disabled visitors - well done!
I would happily go again. Unfortunately we had bad weather there last weekend and didn't get a lot of chance to explore apart from a trip to Barmouth but there is a steam railway very near by, a small village and Lake Bala.
Agree with everything RufusandChica says in previous review - Just returned from a 5 night break at this site. Very nice break, owner (Gareth) was very friendly and pottering about most of the time, site very relaxed. Suitable, level size pitch for our c.Van/awning/car. Lovely listening to sound of the stream and the children playing in it. Dont worry about it being next to the steam train - runs only couple of times in the day so noise not a problem, nice friendly cafe/shop on the platform. Definitely will go back there again.
We've just returned from spending one night at this campsite, and couldn't be more pleased. The site was absolutely beautiful, we were free to park ourselves anywhere on the whole site and we chose a spot away from other campers (partly to avoid their noise, partly to prevent our dogs bothering them)with a beautiful view and close to the railway so our toddler could wave to the trains.
The site is just stunning, the river safe and pretty and clean, and all the stock fences in good order so you can (if you have no neighbours to annoy) let your dogs run loose. I think there was only one tent without dogs attached - a bit of a doggie-paradise campsite.
I found the ladies toilets and showers absolutely fine. There were two showers, one in a normal size cubicle, and one 'open plan' in a room with a toilet - very suitable if you need to take small children in to shower. It was all clean, and the water was plentiful and hot. The washing-up room had hot water and was also clean. My husband said there was just one shower in the gents. I don't know how it would be in peak season, but I suppose if the number of bookings is limited then there wouldn't be a problem?
There is a lovely pub, the Eagle, a 15 minute walk away through the village. Very friendly and good food, but I would recommend booking unless you're going at 'toddler-time' as we did. All the tables were reserved but they were happy to feed us before their later diners came.
We took the railway to Bala and had lunch at the White Lion hotel. Not much to look at on the outside, but very good quality indeed.
All in all, I'd go back tomorrow!
We paid £14.50 and think this was very good value.
I think this site must have changed since previous reports were submitted. I was expecting something special. This wasnt it! No doubt the surrounding scenery is spectacular, but that is what you expect in snowdonia. My difficulties were
1) although the owner was friendly, he was very rarely on site. We saw him twice in a 4 day stay. Once on the day after we had arrived and pitched, for him to collect his money, and the scond time when he came to give us our receipt. It is lucky we didnt have too many problems, because there was nobody present for us to turn to had we needed them. There is no shop on site and no wardens hut(or much else for that matter.
2) The toilet block is very very basic. In the gents there is one loo and one shower. The shower is next to the toilet but is not enclosed, so I had the lovely experience of having 2 showers whilst listening to someone sit barely 10 inches from me whilst depositing yesterdays food waste. Not an experience I wish to repeat. The toilet block was rarely sparkling clean, but was barely acceptable. The ladies also had only one shower, but I am reliably informed (the missus)that the water pressure was so low, that it rendered the shower virtually unuseable. The wash up sinks were pitiful and I dont think they had been cleaned since the season had begun. The water temp was hit and miss. Sometimes very hot, sometimes very cold.
That is all that can be reported about this site because thats all that was here. A large field, about 12 EHU's and a shoddy toilet block.
Bala itself is a beautiful area and has lots to do if you want outdoor action stuff with a very pleasant little town. I will be returning to the area but have already sourced a much better site to visit.
