We arrived here on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August, we had pre-booked for 4 adults and 4 children in two tents. Although we had pre-booked, we struggled to find two pitches together for both tents, it appears that pre-booking does not ensure a reserved pitch as we were told to go and check out firstly the Warren camping field, and then the Meadows camping field ourselves. Fortunately we eventually found two pitches side by side. The sanitary facilities on The Meadows camping field are in a series of porta-cabins, which are kept spotless by the young man who cleans them. Hot water in the dish washing room was available in the mornings, but never did we get hot water in the evenings, it was always stone cold, there are only three sinks in the room and people were often queuing to use them (maybe this is why there was no hot water, the water heating system could not cope with the demand. )
There is a fish and chip shop on site, although it is pricey, a portion of chips £1. 75, though they were of a lot better quality than those from the Goldengate chippy across the road. The small shop was well stocked with essentials and it opened around 8am. The entertainment in the club in the evening was of a reasonable standard and very family orientated, which is ideal if you have children with you. I cannot comment on the swimming pool, as I did not get a chance to use it, although looking in it seemed to be alright.
We were charged £94 per tent with EHU for six nights, Me and Ma in our tent and Step-daughter, husband and four children in theirs (their first time camping), charges are for pitches and not per person. Be warned though, although a decent family site, which is patrolled by site security on a regular basis at night, approximately every two hours, it can still be quite noisy until late, some night until gone mid-night. Though we did hear them tell someone close by us to keep the noise down after they had arrived back at their tent from the club.
We have been to this site quite a few times but this time there have been changes. And we discovered more
1. The showers now have hooks on the doors and the water pressure is constant and it is hot all day.
2. Pool is heated for the afternoon fun swim
3. Entertainment is better, caters for younger ones from 7pm in Cocos and from 8pm for the older ones in Sands
4. Downside - Fish and Chip shop is now open 7 days a week but the prices have gone up £2. 65 for chips and gravy, Golden Gate opposite is £1. 95 and you get twice the amount.
There are lots of good places for the kids about, Knightlys have great entertainment in the evening for kids, we were put off initially because it is outside and we thought it would be chilly but it is heated! and the beer and food prices are very reasonable. The Sandy Bar (or something like that) near Knightlys does 2 Kids meals for £4. 50.
There doesn't seem to be beach access near by but we discovered if you walk through Whitehouse Caravan Park ( go out of main gate turn left towards Abergele, short walk on opposite side of road or walk towards the camping field and exit there) there is a railway bridge which leads straight onto beach.
Myself my ex-wife and our 2 kids, boy age 7 and girl age 6 have just got back from this site and can only say how much we all enjoyed it from the moment we arrived to the minute we left.
The receptionist was very helpful, and explained everything and nothing was too much trouble for them and they even took time to explain to my kids all about the kids club when they asked.
The caravan was the cleanest I’ve ever stopped in and none of us wanted to come home, we tried to book some extra days but the site was booked up.
The chip shop was good value for money and got used every night diet starts Monday ha ha.
The on site shop had a good selection of food items and was not that over priced but if you didn't want to go there then there were shops and a supermarket no more than Half a mile away.
The night time entertainment was very good from kids disco to dancers and magician who was very good. They had bingo every night from half 6 to half 7ish whilst the kids went to the fun club and played games and danced there little legs off then when they came back about 8ish the entertainment started, the beer was priced at an ok level no more expensive then any city.
The swimming pool was very clean and we used it every day and I don't know who had more fun on the slid me or the kids, and the water was very warm.
To sum it up would we go back yes without question, we had a very good week and the kids made lots of friends and had the time of there lives in the kids club and playing out with there new mates.
Stopped here in July, must say really enjoyed it. It was clean, the guy that was looking after the showers/toilets was always there was beginning to wonder if he lived in them, everyone was friendly. The entertainment was great. The only downside was the ear wigs, so if you don't like creepy crawlies then its not for you. The site itself was close to many attractions, and there's a really good fish and chip shop close by, your a sort walk away from the very clean beaches. I will deffo be going again hopefully soon.
I was somewhat dubious after reading some of the recent reviews, but with great trepidation and plans to move if it was as bad as people have said, we set off.
Upon arrival, we managed to squeeze into a small car park, which isn't designed for towing vehicles. I think that this is my ONLY niggle with the site.
The receptionist was very helpful, and explained everything, and directed us to the best field for if you have young children (The Warren).
Finding a pitch was easy as there was plenty of empty ones, they are set pitches and look like they have been for some time, there is nothing to separate the pitches, so just use some common sense and I have stayed on many sites like this many times before. The ground was flat, and easy to pitch on / peg down. The grass has taken quite a hammering, but again this is to be expected on a site like this.
The toilets/showers were always well maintained and clean. There was always hot water and if anything the water pressure was a little to high.
We made use of all the facilities, including the pub, where the was always good value for money. The night time entertainment was your typical cheesy holiday park kind of stuff, which kept us and our son entertained. The swimming pool is cooler in the morning for the general swim and then warmed up in the afternoon for the 'fun swim' session. The shop has most basics and isn't overly expensive. The bar prices are comparable with Manchester City Centre. The children's play park is well kept with very little vandalism / graffiti.
Some people don't clean up after there dogs, but the park do have a van patrolling solely for this and it is soon cleaned up. The security van does it's rounds pretty frequently, through the day and well into the evening.
You can sometimes hear some noise from the entertainment at nights but not enough to offend anyone and you have to listen out for it. The street noise is minimal and every now and then you will hear the cows in the next field, but that is part of the fun of camping.
From the site you can walk easily walk into Abergele and Towyn, there is a decent sized Asda less than 10 mins drive away. And for days out you can easily drive into Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and Conwy. I am sure that there are many more, but this is all we had time to visit. In Conwy there is the castle, the Welsh Mountain Zoo, which is fantastic!
I think I have covered everything, and just surmise, we enjoyed it so much that we booked to stay an extra day!
This is the first site I have been to. We stayed two nights, 1st night lovely and quite, however the 2nd night was absolutely horrendous when new people arrived for the weekend! Even with security staff patrolling every hour. The parties continued to drink all day and night, used disgusting language, messed with other peoples tents, smash bottles and play music through the car stereos which they just turned off every time they saw the headlights of the security man who did his drive round the site(ever hour) enter through the gates. This went on and on until 4:20 AM along with them intimidated families who asked them to keep it down, by threatening to collapse tents, smash car windows etc all of which was keeping families who wanted to sleep awake and waking children who were asleep. Eventually security told them to stop, apparently they cannot do anything about any of this etc until after 2AM! Even after this warning they carried on but without the car stereos until after 4AM!
One good thing I will say is the Resort seemed very good to begin with, staff were helpful and friendly in the pool area and reception, bathroom facilities were very clean, lovely hot water in the showers and heaters in the toilets at night time. The play areas seemed really good and they had kids clubs during the day, however we didn’t venture into those. There is an arcade which you have to go through to get to the pool or evening entertainment, which has a variety of different things to play. The beer was rather overpriced in the Entertainment area over £7 for two pints of lager! There is a Chippy which is ok but again expensive seemed nice when eating it, however we were all ill the next day.
Upon arrival reception staff very helpful and said we could pitch anywhere we liked in 'The Meadow' area, we found what we thought was a lovely spot for us to set up camp or at least for half of our stay anyway.
All the staff on site were very friendly and helpful
We stayed on The Warren - the toilets and washing up area were always lovely and clean - with the cleaner in evidence.
The only down side was that the showers in the ladies operated in bursts of less than 10 seconds, which was rather annoying. Surely they can be set for longer
The disabled shower was different - switch it on and it stayed on - but the only problem was that the drainage was insufficient - so the whole room ended up under an inch of water.
The kids loved the playarea which was well maintained.
Alice spend hours in the pool.
We paid for 3 water activities for Alice.
Hydrodomes were expensive for what you got - but she loved them.
Blading - only one other child with her so was excellent value.
Snorkling - she was the only child there - but the session still went ahead - most definitely her favourite.
The prices in the on site shop tended to vary form corner store = to expensive.
We did look at the Menu at the Farmhouse in but it was expensive, so drove down to Rhyl and found a pup which was good - the Crown Bard (by Sainsbury).
Booked four night here to try out some new camping equipment and make use of Tesco vouchers.
Site is clean and well looked after.
Stopped on the Meadows and found a pitch easily, even thru booked, no pitch is allocated.
Toilets and showers are as previously stated of the porta-cabin type but are very clean, modern and heated. Gents showers were always hot and a pleasure to use.
Nice location for touring North Wales and a few areas to walk to from the site.
Did not use any of the entertainment or eat at the pub or the chip shop. All looked OK'ish.
Only issue encountered was other campers that appear to use the site as a 'party' venue, not single sex groups but families. First night was music, shouting, swearing and blowing of air horns(!) from the next tent until after 3am. Site security eventually intervened but this just resulted in a large and aggressive argument. The next day no change, campers not asked to leave site and all repeated but not as bad as the first night.
Remaining two nights were enjoyable following the end of the bank holiday weekend and departure of some of the noisy groups.
Dogs are also allowed on site and I ended up with my pitch being used as a dog toilet, following incidents of previous night it did not feel safe to complain.
Am used to and enjoy Haven type sites but do not want my children picking up the bad language / behaviour that appeared common place amongst the other guests.
Site is good / clean (apart from the dogs) but is not policed enough and appears to attract the wrong sort of person then this is not managed correctly.
Will be going back, Lovely clean well looked after site. Perfect location. We parked on the 'Warren' section nice part lovely views, plenty of hook ups, close to toilet/wash up/laundry blocks. Not far from anything you need, Local beach, Shops, pubs, chippys. Site has lots to keep the family happy.
Toilets etc 100%.
Surrounding area very nice. Good bus service.
Looking forward to September. Reccomend this site 100%.
Childrens adventure play grounds look very good.
Small fair just along the road, Adsa within short drive, plenty of other smaller co-op type shops around. Aldi out towards Rhyl about 5 mins drive away.
We have been using this site for many many years , hasn't really changed much. A good site with plenty level touring pitches. There are 2 sides for touring of which we have stayed on both. The warren has porta cabin toilets, showers which are kept clean. Very close to the village and Rhyl a short drive away with plenty of shops, pubs, clubs, arcades and bingo. The entertainment in the club always seems to be the same when we go, no good acts like there used to be, more for 5-10 year olds. Security patrols quite often which is a good thing. So to sum it up a good site if you book at the right time as very expensive during school holidays
Our first visit to this site, only to be used as a base to visit other areas of what is a beautiful country. On booking in, we were told to go to the Meadows or the Warren, we went to the meadows and saw young groups of single sexes setting large camp fires and drinking lager, we chose to try the Warren. We struggled for a '6m x 6m' pitch. We eventually found a pitch and got our weekend break underway, we arrived at 6.45pm, by the time we were set up and ready to eat we set of in search of food, after being delayed in traffic. The on site chippy smelled good, so me my wife and 2 children (6) (11) tried the establishment. We waited 20 mins and after no recognition of our existence we walked out, the Farmhouse Inn offered great deals on family food at a good price 2 for £11.00 as advertised. We walked in and thought we had entered a fair ground ghost house or funeral home, we waited at the bar for 15 mins for a drink/food/water/ anything. But no one came 3 couples in the bar and my children wanted to leave as the place 'scared them'.
We eventually went off site, in fact crossed the road and got four meals at a good price and friendly service to match.
That night came a rowdy and sleepless night as we were close to the main road and other campers were not as polite and courteous to other fellow campers as we are used too, I am talking about groups of same sex males/females that the owners do not allow on site. We decided to get up early next morning and get off the site for a days sightseeing. We visited many areas that Wales has to offer and had a fantastic day out, on return to the site we found that a fellow camper had let their dog use our pitch as a toilet, thanks for that!
The family went for showers and these were very good with hot water all day, and very clean facilities.
My wife and I settled down for a nice drink when the children came back from the park/adventure playground, which was well equipped, to let us know that my youngest had had his jacket taken, we went to investigate only to find the play area had been set on fire!
In all I can honestly say that I will not take my family back to this site, but will return to Wales. We got the jacket back by the way.
Such a shame as the site just needs policing better and a good facelift.
Visited this site on the weekend of the royal wedding with 2 other families. We had an excellent time, location is fab with a 2 min drive to Towyn centre. The kiddies play area was well stocked and safe. The indoor swimming pool was great and clean, the kids loved it.
Toilets and shower blocks was always clean and well stocked.
The pitches are a little too close together but this never bothered any of us as all the other people on the site was very friendly.
Cant comment on the nightly entertainment as we never used it but there seemed to be something on every night.
Would recommend this site for a nice family time, we will definitely be going back again
Visited this site for a three night stay over the Easter weekend. We stayed in a tent and had electrical hook up.
The site was extremely busy in all areas. There was no easy to hand information about the times of the pool openings, and couldn't find a member of staff anywhere on the site itself.
The toilets near the electric hook up site where ok. There isn't sufficient plumbing in place to hold the number of toilets, showers, etc. Same for the pot washing facilities. Unless your first in queue don't expect hot water.
The staff there from what we could see did do what they could to keep up.
The arcade - the machines are from the 80's if you can find onee that works.
Chip Shop - Frozen Food Shop it should be called. There is a proper chippy about 200/300 yards towards Towyn which is better - go there.
Not a lot for young kids to do without you following them about everywhere the park, although very good, is miles away from camping so bear this in mind. We like to go sites where you can see your children from tent near park etc.
Everyone stayed up really late - whether we were just unlucky remains to be seen. But a lot of noise even after around 3am, this not the owners fault though.
Overall, not a bad site bit of a chav magnet we won't be visiting again!
No denying that the sites facilities where good such as the park, however this didn’t make up for the rest of the problems on site.
Noise from peoples parties went on until early hours of the morning, these weren’t isolated incidents, but everywhere and every night, what made in more frustrating that the security that were going around the site virtually every hour during the day to check your tick was up to date were no where to be seen at night to control the noise. Normally I would go and confront to the perpetrators but there were just to many areas of noise.
Whilst the poor chappy who cleaned the toilet block did an excellent job he was fighting a loosing battle against someone who insisted on smearing excrement on the toilet wall. Litter was also a problem on site.
The only way to get hot water to wash up was to fill your bowl with the shower. Tents were just crammed in; we went off site only to return to find a tent had been erected were we parked leaving no space between our tent and others.
My experience of camping / caravanning over the years has been that people on site (fellow campers) are very friendly and relaxed, but not here you are more likely to be snarled at or attacked for saying ‘morning’.
If by writing this review in can keep one ‘normal’ family who have respect for other from visiting Ty Mawr it will have been worth it. I have a lot more examples of the bad experience we had of the site.
