First of all contact the park direct if you can because we were given wrong information about the size of pitches .
On arrival 25 th august 2009 we were told by the head office that caravans over 21ft will struggle to get a pitch big enough so we were already by that time fearing that we couldn't get on , we got there and to our amazement there was bigger vans there than ours the pitches were infact very big we had full awning with both annexs on wind break and still room for the car.
The amenities were basic , the toilets were out of date BUT very clean a credit to the cleaners there. There was a park for the kids but a little out of the way really from the touring pitches. The pool described needs updating its just simply a pool with a slide in which when we used the pool the slide was out of order . Its got a good shop , friendly reception team. The club had good artist on the only thing wrong with the club a little to small for the size of park , the kids loved the arcade .
All though the park states that dogs had to remain on leads we found a few of them with out leads thus dog mess here and there . Off the park we found traffic into Towyn horrendous every day, backed up. You can walk to Towyn, there are a few shops pubs etc. There is also funfair @ tyr prince race course with a market on wed, fri, sun apart from that's it. Rhyl is close to my heart as I spent holidays there as a child and enjoyed every holiday there but, and this is a big but, Rhyl is quite run down it needs money injecting into the town to make it great again
We went with friends at the beginning of august and they arrived about an hour before us. When we arrived told to park anywhere and nobody checked the validity of passes for their stay. It is a great site for kids with plenty to do but if you have a dog there is only a mall area for exercising them other than taking them to the beach. The toilet facilities could do with updating or at least a maintenance crew to tour them to fix leaking fittings and water damaged sink tops (the nearest one to us had a worktop with the sinks built in that was falling apart due to water ingress at least for 12 months). Other than that it is a good site with plenty to do and the towyn market is great ( if you are there for a few days buy your meat from the butchers van there we got 10 fillet steaks for £10 and they were great 'in fact fill your car on the way home ready for the freezer(we are going back to do this later this month)'. At £40 a night on the summer over a weekend it was expensive they surely could do something about that especially with the lack of maintenance within the facilities.
I have been to this site for the past three years for as couple of days here and there. And on the whole it wasn't too bad, the last time it was a poor experience.
I think the reason was we went over a weekend, some people were there just to party and they did, into the morning. This when you have two young kids is not good.
The site is good for a base for Rhyl etc.
Not a long walk to the nearest beach the the site opposite, but unfortunately the beach is a stone one.
Entertainment at night was good although the pool during the day wasn't always open or always clean.
The site itself was large although a little cramped with the markings for the plots being overgrown, and the showers were always clean although a bit of a squeeze if you were on the large side.
As I say a good site as a base for travel and if you don't mind being kept awake
We pitched on this site for 8 nights and we were on the Meadows site not the Warren which always seems to be quite full.On the whole we were impressed by this site as for £156 we had 8 nights and that included £3 per night for our dog. Pitches were grass and flat so no problem there and toilets were portacabin type but again very good. Showers were free but they were locked at 8pm each night. In with your fees you receive passes to all the facilities which include swimming pool, bars etc.
Enjoyed it more through the week as at weekend it gets very busy and people pitch quite close to you as pitches are not marked out.Its also on first come first served basis so you can't reserve your pitch. Dog walk is just a small path to where they dump rubbish and its not very big. Dogs are meant to be on leads but we encountered two that were running free all the time. Shame people don't comply with the rules.
Security patrol on foot at weekends but really we had no problems with noise etc even though there were single sex groups on site. One word of warning is that from school summer hols fees go up to £40 per night which I think is scandalous as we only paid £16.50 plus £3.00 for our dog (awnings are free).
Out of high season this is a great site and we will return.
Just got back from spending 3 nights here, didn't have high expectations after reading some of the reviews on here but we have had a great time.
Arrived at about 9pm so the reception area was closed but was directed to the main bar area where we were given our passes and told where we were able to pitch. We chose the Meadows and pitched along the back hedge. By 10pm we were ready to try out the entertainment and spent the night in the onsite club where prices were no different than what we would pay at home.
During our stay we walked into Rhyll, the nearby beach and Towyn where again food & drink prices were good.
Toilets and showers were kept clean and I didn't have to queue once, all the staff we spoke to were friendly and the onsite pub was great for breakfast and I could even get my Costa Coffee fix.
We are already planning on returning to Ty Mawr later this year.
We visited this site at the tail end of June '09 during the heatwave. I was a bit put off beforehand after reading some of the reviews, but, as this was our first outing with our new (read old) Dandy 6 folding camper, we wanted somewhere within an hour or so of our home in Merseyside. We also wanted a commercial type site with a pool and kids club to entertain ourselves and our three young lads. Not everyone's cup of tea I know, but horses for courses.
Finding the site is easy and check-in was painless. I expected to be allocated a pitch but as others point out, you choose yourself. Upon arrival you are given passes to get entry to the entertainment facilities (you only need these of a night time) a map of the site and a few details of what's on. The label to attach to your unit makes it clear that all unites should leave 6metres of clear space between your fellow campers and people do try to honour this. We stayed on the Warren field and found it freshly mowed with zero litter. The pitches are flat, no pot-holes in the roads, lots of regularly spaced hook-up points.
The shower block was kept spotless with soap and tissue paper. Though my observation is that it is the users of the facilities that left a little litter in the shower blocks - not the fault of the wardens. The showers are good and the cubicles split in two so you don't get your clothes soaked in use. The showers are button press and you may get 15-seconds use between presses but I had no problem with this.
The site is well equipped - excellent pool with slide. The pool was never too packed even on a busy half-term-holiday/FA cup final weekend; the adventure park is well equipped and we were happy to let our kids mix there. No surprise that the evening shows are geared around kids disco, dance competitions, cabaret and the odd boys vs' girls audience competitions. However, my kids loved it to bits and cried when they had to leave. The show host do give out lots of prizes and everyone is included.
The cabaret bands were good and the drinks prices are fair. The food at the onsite bar and restaurant was fine - standard pub grub, price was ok, portions big and staff were attentive. We'd heard good reports of the on-site chip-shop and it was busy. The supermarket was well stocked and the prices were the same as the hight street.
We found the campers respected each other and as to be expected with it being a family site, there were lots of groups of kids playing, meeting, exploring and having a laugh. However, the site was nice and quiet after sundown and we had no problems with noise or trouble.
In short, we went with low expectations planning to stay two days and as the weather was excellent and the nightly price so cheap, we extended the stay for a week.
Having experienced a few Haven sites, this site is much smaller with equivalent facilities. For me, this gets a thumbs up. The pool never gets too packed and you can usually quickly find a table in the club after a quick search each evening. We found the other campsite users to be nice people - respectful and looking to keep the kids safe and behaved.
A lovely surprise and great break. We visited Towyn, Rhyl, Conwy Castle and Llandudno. All easy an easy drive/bus journey away. The sun centre has been refurbished nicely and is a great rainy day insurance policy.
A mention must also go to the staff and management at the Knightly restaurant and entertainment complex at the end of Sandbank Road in Towyn. As the weather was in the late 20's, Towyn felt like Spain. We had an excellent al-fresco meal, great service, an excellent kids show and a brilliant evening. Very family orientated with great prices. Give it a try.
We booked Ty Mawr at the very last minute. I wasn't impressed by the reviews I had read, but everywhere else was booked up so we decided it was better than staying at home. Which it was thanks to the sunny weather and the nearby sandy beaches.
The place itself is ok, close to the beach and the onsite facilities looked ok too (club/pool etc) although we didn't try them ourselves.
When we arrived we were directed towards the field and told to camp anywhere. The site was covered in litter despite there being plenty of bins dotted around.
The toilets are terrible. Portakabins like you would find at a temporary festival site. They were dirty and rarely had supplies of toilet roll. We used bottled water to clean our teeth at the tent because they were so bad!
The showers were also portakabins but were in a better condition than the toilets although they went from boiling hot to freezing cold and back again every few seconds.
There were a lot of large groups on the site and although I have no objections to people having fun, when the loud music and cheering is still going on past midnight on a family site it is unreasonable. Security did try to intervene, but two mintues after they had gone the music was back up and they never returned to sort it out. In the end it was neighbouring campers who had to approach the group to ask them to be quiet.
It was very expensive as there is no option to book without the use of the club/pool etc, we paid £64 for 2 nights.
It was worth it for a couple of days by the sea, but if I could've booked elsewhere I would have. The toilets really do need sorting out, for the cost of the pitch campers shouldn't be made to feel like second class citizens.
We stayed at the park over the bank holiday weekend in May 09.
The site was packed, full of tourers and tents,
The good points
The pitch was level and had plenty of room
The pool
The kids play area
We were only staying 2 nights
The bad points
The toilets were porto cabins and were disgusting, no Loo rolls, No soap to wash your hands.
No-one on the site seemed to be bothered about how loud there music was and how late it went on, Don`t get me wrong I`m all for having a good time, but when it's still going on at 4am its beyond a joke. Most site`s are normally strict about having music off and to respect other holiday makers, after 11pm, but not here!, The 2 nights were the same.
The Club was way tooooo loud and our kids could not handle it and we had to leave. The entertainment (resident group) were terrible.
We tried to get food from the takeaway, 1 person cooking and serving, We waited about 45mins to get served.
Very tidy, very commercial site. Pool was great and the kids loved the play area.
There were only statics around the main facilities with the camping fields a little further back.
We were situated very close to the evening entertainment building which played very loud music until near midnight every night. This is not normally a problem unless you have small kids who need to be in bed early!
We visited a few attractions around the area but most were a good 30 minute plus drive away. However there's a fantastic indoor swimming pool just up the road which is a must visit if you have a family.
We come here most years either early or late season to take advantage of the reduced fees, you can camp for £5 or £8 with EHU per night for the pitch, we had 4 adults a dog & EHU all for the £8 but it does go up for Friday & Saturday night when it fills up.
The site itself is a large typical commercial site geared up for families with children but having said that you get access to the heated indoor pool with an hour in the morning for adults only.
There is also the usual arcade, chippy, 3 bars, one does food which I'm told is OK & cabaret, the guest turns can be alright but not sure about the residents but the kids seem to love it.
The pitches are spacious with a hook up between every 4 & a tap with a grid is never far away.
The grass is level & easy to get pegs in.
The fields are divided into 3, a large touring field behind the club house with roads running through it for access but you park on the grass next to your unit.
This field has a brick amenities block with toilets & showers which can get muddy when wet & busy but the staff do come round & try to keep on top of things.
The second field is at the far end of the site in a separate field which has portacabin toilets & showers, these can be a little cramped but do the job there is also a wide disabled unit with a ramp on the end of this.
This field is open in peak season & at weekends when its busy (when the sun is out)
This field also has taps & EHU in it & is also level.
Please note these first 2 fields are behind a hedge directly onto the main road so it can be noisy but quietens right down at night. You might be better getting to the back of these fields but its never bothered us being townies.
The third field is at the back of the second & is an overflow field with nothing on it at all, it is also used as the dog walk so beware.
Although Abergele is just out of the gate we turned left & went to Pensarn which is just down the road & has 2 good pubs ,1 does food the other is a beer house, has a supermarket & has access onto the beach for cars, the top is pebbles & shingle but goes onto sand as the tide goes out, beware of the 2 bays in front of the station as they have an ancient peat bed in them & the groynes hold the slime which can be deep & extremely mucky especially if you have kids or dogs, trust me I know.
You are 5 minutes from the A55 so all North Wales is easier to get to,15 minutes Llandudno 30 minutes Anglesey.
All in all its what you would expect from this kind of site . It can get noisy at weekends but for the money its a bargain except school holidays when its a lot dearer & we avoid like the plague.
After reading the reviews I was necessarily cautious about this camp site, especially as we had booked to leave the van on from 22 August to 30 October, however, we were pleasantly surprised. We arrived the Friday afternoon of the bank holiday weekend and there were still quite a few pitches available, most of a reasonable size.
We did find the toilet blocks tatty and the main shower block closed too early, the cubicles were too also too small and the water not hot enough to my liking.
The club is typical of a site of this sort, although some of the entertainment was pretty poor especially the resident band, who seemed to appear on stage at some point every night. The ‘Stage Shows’ performed by the entertainment staff were also a waste of space. Nevertheless we had a good time because of the company we were in (my parents, kids and friends made on site). The bands and artists that were booked to perform provided the best entertainment.
My preferable evenings out involved going into the centre of Towyn in the Knighleys complex (near the fair) and Sandy Bay Inn. Entertainment was provided for both adults and children and the drinks didn’t seem to be too expensive. On the way into the centre the Wendover Pub provided a stopgap with a family room with pool, darts etc.
The local Chinese restaurant ‘China Towyn’ was nice, the food plentiful and delicious. We also ate at the Long Cocktail Lounge and the meals there were good value for money. Claire’s Café (follow the road to the left at the amusements) provides a fabulous breakfast including tea or coffee, hash brown, black pudding and toast, all for £3.45.
Having spent a further two long weekends in addition to our week’s holiday in August I’m still looking forward to having more weekends there until the end of the season. This is an ideal site for fun loving people with children that enjoy being able to venture off site without having to take the car!
Stay got off to a bad start as I had booked (and been assured of) two pitches together, only to find on arrival that none had been allocated at all and it was see what you can get. On inspection of the EHU field you had a job to find one pitch let alone two. Had resigned ourselves to giving up on electric and pitching on the camping field, when a security guard arrived and asked us for I.D. Explained the situation and he said to wait. Within 5 mins he was back and had found two adjacent pitches (which I'm sure weren't there previously). Pitched on these only to find that the electricity didn't work. Guy next door gave us the use of an extension lead to his connection, thanks for that.
Toilet/shower facilities adequate though never clean enough. Didn't use pool/club etc. Although it didn't bother me the noise cufew wasn't very well adhered to and could well inconvenience light sleepers. Pitches reasonably level and of a good size. Overall although we had a good weekend I would not return.
We camped for the bank holiday at Ty Mawr Holiday Park on the warren field .Toilets were old but clean. Plenty of hot water morning and evening the park was clean staff were friendly .The swimming pool again old but clean the kids loved the holiday park .The farmhouse inn pub that was on site great breakfast good value for money .The onsite chippy was again good value for money .
We took kids to the fair on the beach KNIGHTS fair £7.99 for half a day wrist band .
Arrived around lunch time after a long drive from the south coast of England only to be meet by an unhappy gate man / security person, no information given or offered simply told where NOT to park and then he walked away.
The booking in reception was not sign posted as we could see and took myself and my “disabled” wife a while to find, hidden around a corner, my wife suffering from a muscle weakness, this needs to have clear signs posted
On speaking to a very friendly young lady in reception we were given our pitch details down at the Warren, also told (and I quote) “If there is someone on your designated pitch, just move to the next available empty pitch but come and let us know where you are”
Found our designated pitch in use and the only one available as per instructions can only be described as a dirt bowl, not amused at all after paying £504 for a two week stay. There seemed to be no control as to where people would pitch and to one side other campers encroached on our pitch with no concern, seems this was a everyday issue around the Warren area with wind breaks and “boundaries” being put up all over the place.
Pot holes on most of the access roads around the camp to an approx depth of 4”, on other roads the speed humps have been built up far too large for smaller vehicles to negotiate without hitting the back end coming down the other side, very narrow but approx 6” tall.
We had to endure loud music but not from other campers, this came from the maintenance building that was directly behind our pitch on the Warren area between E3 and E6 pitches)
Gents toilet block on the Warren was dirty, cleaners only seemed to mop the areas that needed it, I watched this myself as the areas under the urinals and around the toilet bowls were the only areas moped. Along with this there were stains on the cubical partition walls and within one cubical I noticed an empty half bottle of Bacardi and stained underwear that were not removed for three days, also stains, dust and dirt on the top section of the toilet tiles close to the floor which shows there has been very little cleaning carried out for a period of time.
The ladies toilets were not much better, (as informed by my wife) with toilet paper all over the floor and the sinks clogged up with tissue and soap, this would be like this for around 3 to 4 days before being cleaned. Puddles of water would appear on the floor after the cleaners had been in, as if they had just thrown a bucket of water over the floor instead of using a mop.
Dog crap around our pitch and seen in other areas of the park, not good for anyone and a health hazard especially for smaller children, I have to say signs are posted to the dog walking area which the majority of dog owners seem to ignore totally.
We arrived on a Saturday and though we did see the large wheelie bins being emptied (but not until the Monday) they seemed to fill up just a quickly and the seagulls had a field day, rubbish and waste around the bins and being carried around the park by the seagulls, with the amount of money they make you would think that if needed another one or two rubbish collections per week would resolve this problem.
Drainage was poor and we ended up having to resort to building a small soil and sand wall around one side of the trailer tent and going out and buying more tarpaulins to stop the water / rain from coming in, also access roads had speed humps in inappropriate places and therefore rain water did not drain away, covering the width of some access roads and making us either walk around the long way (remember my disabled wife) or having to walk across the rain sodden grass getting muddy before we even got anywhere. (I appreciate they had no control over the weather, but decent drainage of the pitches and sensible placements of the speed humps would alleviate this problem)
The men’s showers within the Warren area faired no better, missing and broken off clothes hooks on backs of doors, missing and broken off soap trays, damaged locks, when attempting to shower you had to be quick due to the water turning off every few seconds and having to press the button in again, Want a nice relaxing shower after a day out,?? You won’t get one at this park. Only good point is that the water was nice and warm if you could keep it running.
If you want a shower after around 9pm or before approx. 9am you had not chance unless you were in the first two to get into the shower block as they would close a shutter on the main shower and toilet area, this also caused a problem when numerous male campers had to queue to use the only two toilet cubicles available when everything else was shut down, just great after a night on the town. The ladies showers were also closed off at the same time, leaving the same problems as described above.
Resident band “Revolution” WHAT CAN I SAY, Mmm OK, the best member of the band was the drummer, why?, simple, he never attempted to sing, guitarist / keyboards rough, loud singing did not complement the lead singer who despite having a good voice was simply not strong enough for the venue or the chosen songs. (just a suggestion, maybe they need to change the name of the band to Revoltion)
As for a clown called Camp David, what a waste of space, faulty equipment, crap gags, singing ?? I thought it was a karaoke night, thank god he cut his spot short. The wrestlers were not much better, failed to entertain and then turned on the audience due to their lack of interest, (Mm Rick Flair tag partner, just take up Ballet)
Even the entertainment halls gents toilets remained dirty throughout our two-week visit, no matter what time of day we used them they always seemed dirty and remained smelly. The park shop was overpriced and we went elsewhere for fish & chips as these were not to our liking.
Within the arcade numerous slot machines were not working, not just for a day or so but throughout our two week stay, the ten pin bowling machine was broken as my daughter found out and we had to hunt for someone to refund the money, this took an age
Two highlights in relation to the entertainment of the park came with a Lee Evans tribute artist who was FANTASTIC and a Bee Gees tribute band again FANTASTIC, WOW two evenings decent entertainment over the two weeks for the price we paid for our holiday, well thank our lucky stars.
If you do visit this park, take our word for the entertainment and simply stroll across the road to the Golden Gate Cabaret Club, open to all parks in the area with very good performers / a decent fish & chip shop and an arcade with slot machines that work and offer better enjoyment with only two machines out of order throughout our two week stay. Evne the Pool table was half the price of that within Ty Mawr at 50p a game.
