This was my first ever camping trip and I thoroughly loved it. The campsite was nice with clean facilities. The site is split in two by a steam train track and the station is on the campsite. This sounds dreadful but is completely the opposite. The train is a quaint old steam train which runs two or three times a day and never early in the morning or late at night.
The views are picturesque with the mountains as the backdrop, and most things are a few minutes away by car.
There is lots to do in the surrounding area from climbing Mount Snowdon to visiting castles and museums. The site is clean, although I would prefer the rear field as there was less children and the facilities were also in this field.
There is a pub/restaurant on site, which does reasonable food. There is a stream that runs along the bottom of the rear field and in August there was plenty of midges, so you need repellent.
I have no complaints about this site and would go back again, next time for a longer stay, as there is plenty to do with lots of lovely walks.
There were three showers and two toilets and sinks in the female facilities and the showers were hot and free with no timer, I assume there was the same setup in the mens facilities.
The food prep area had two sinks and there was a freezer for ice blocks. A washing machine, dryer and iron were available for a fee, you had to purchase tokens to use them from the pub.
Very expensive site - £22 per night for a motorhome, two adults with hook up. Nice scenery surrounding but there are no walks off the site. I consider the road far too dangerous to walk along so use of the car/motorhome necessary.
Ideal for travelling on the steam train as the station is next to the site, indeed the railway line splits it in half. The ground is soft on the grass when wet so bigger motor homes will need to put mats/something under the wheels to stop sinking.
There are limited hard standings at bottom of field (3 I think) but are surrounded by trees and seemed a little dark. Agree with a previous writer, pub meals on the expensive side for what you get.
We have just returned from this site. We stayed for 2 nights and found the site great. The pub was nice. The pitches were quite flat and had plenty of space between tents. Toilets, showers and washing up good plenty of hot water. The only thing I was disappointed with was the play area, it was a bit small and at the back of the pub. It was a very safe space but a shame it wasn't nearer the pitches, you have to walk over the car park to get to it, small children need to be supervised getting there.
The shop near by was never open but a short drive into town we found a morrisons, a tesco and a mc donnalds. We tried the chippy which seemed very busy, but was well worth the wait the fish was cooked fresh as we ordered and very reasonable. It was not far from the site we walked, and the food was still warm when we got back to the tent. Over all we would definitely go back but for longer next time.
Stayed here in early August for 4 nights, Weather was fine with one day of rain which the field coped with well.
The site is split by the railway track which means that one part has toilets only yet the other has toilets, showers & pot washing facilities.
The facilities were ok, the showers were sometimes hot but mostly cold to warm (I got told that the best time for the hot water was in the evening). Having said that this was for the gents, I’m told the ladies were much better.
The meals and drinks at the pub were adequate yet quite expensive for what you got.
The site was kept clean and tidy with no real noise except from the road nearby, although the wildlife (Fox, Owl, & Geese) did add to the noise especially in the night time.
Generally a good site and a good base for exploring Wales
We stayed at this campsite and were happy to see that the owner had shorted out and replaced the shower blocks as promised. The pub staff were very helpful and the new ales brewed on site were great. The weather was dreadful so we went to the pub every night. The only thing I would ask is for some sort of entertainment as there is nothing to do when it is wet
Glanllyn is situated on the shore of Lake Bala in Wales. 16 acres of natural parkland and spectacular views of nearby hills and mountains make it an idyllic spot to pitch a caravan, motorhome, tent or campervan with level grass or hardstanding pitches. For water sports enthusiasts there is a private shingle beach with easy launching area for windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding. Camp shop, wifi, laundrette, excellent heated toilet & shower facilities. The market town of Bala is 3 miles away with plenty of small shops, pubs & retaurants, cinema and a leisure centre. Like the previous reviewer I couldn't agree more when it comes to the unsympathetic staff here. We booked in advance (big mistake) and turned up to check in. The weather was awful, Wales were under a severe weather warning with monsoon style rain with no let up for three days, but we turned up anyhow. The whole area was flooded, and it was impossible to set up camp. We asked if we could have our money back, as it was extreme circumstances. The answer came back, we don't do refunds, it says on our website etc etc and she just said that's the risk you take booking in advance - nice eh ? there was no risk on their behalf. We tried to rearrange our visit, but again they were having non of it. They're just happy to take your money and run and there is no reasoning on their behalf. So do not book in advance. I was baffled by their attitude. As for the manager, she was always out apparently each of the 3 times we contacted them.
We were expecting a nice quaint Welsh pub, we were faced with not a bad looking building, but was a 70s tardis, the interior was that of a 70s social club, complete with lovely stone cladding and regimented rows of tables, the only thing missing was Gene Hunt at the bar! However if chicken in a basket is your thing you might just like it in here.
As for the location, sure this is fine, but is about the only thing that is. OK, you can't plan the weather, but a bit sympathetic human nature wouldn't go a miss.
We stayed here for 5 nights (tue to sun) and loved it, this was my first camping trip to Wales.
The park is in a great location for visiting attractions in the surrounding area and the views are beautiful.
Pros
The facilities, although some might say basic, were perfectly adequate whilst we were there and were always clean.
The staff were always friendly and told me how to pronounce their beer instead of me keep asking for 'the one with the green label'.
The beer was reasonably priced and always very drinkable !.
I thought that the food was slightly dear until I saw the size of the portions, and it tasted great.
There is a small shop up the road and a chippy a bit further, but we didn't need to use them
Cons
The sensor for the toilet lights needs to be longer as we ended up taking torches with us (even in daytime with the small block by the entrance.)
Make sure you have some strong tent pegs as the hard ground was a right problem in some parts.
The pitches could be marked out a bit better as we weren't sure if we had encroached on the next.
It may help to have a basic diagram of the site on the back of the campsite rules sheet they give you as some people didn't know about the little gate giving quicker access to the pub and the footbridge and were using the main (squeaky) gate or the level crossing to get to the shower block.
All in all, it is a lovely campsite and I would recommend it to friends.
(one note to add, if you are heading to Porthmadog or Portmeirion. Don't go via Beddgelert unless you want the scenic route, head towards Caernarfon and cut across to the A487 (well signposted). It's easier and the road is wider.)
Fantastic place to stay. We found the staff extremely friendly. The food and drink at the pub are brilliant. This is a great spot to enjoy the surrounding area which has lots to offer. The toilet and shower facilities over the track are excellent. We have found this to be a small and friendly site and have returned to visit many times and are due to visit again this Easter.
Would highly recommend to campers who enjoy proper camping on a lovely campsite.
Fantastic views, good showers, they were always warm. We liked the utiliy room which provided a freezer, washing machine, dryer and washing up facilities.
We had everything we needed and the food in the pub was very good. (home cooked). we stayed on the overspill + which suited us as we did not have children.
We will definitely visit again as it is a great base to visit snowdon and surrounding areas.
