My boyfriend and I stayed here from sunday 29th July to Sat 4th August
I booked this campsite a good month before my boyfriend and me were due to camp there. The lady on the phone was friendly and booked us on no problems and sent the receipt in the post as payment upfront is required. After booking and paying for the campsite I read the reviews on here, and after reading some of the earlier reviews I was wondering whether or not the campsite would be a bit disappointing, but as I had paid I decided it would just have to do!
First impressions on arrival - it was easy enough to find, as the car park for the campsite is the same as for the pub and Waunfawr highland railway station. We parked up and went in the pub to book in. Within ten minutes we were at our pitch. The view was gorgeous, countryside all around you. We didn't ask for hookups but other people around us were using them and they were well placed.
We were pitched two pitches away from the toilet block in the main field. The grass was well looked after, and didn't seem soggy which was a surprise due to the recent amount of rain! So it was a well-drained campsite. The pitches weren't too close either so you had plenty of your own space. I don’t know what it was like round the rest of the campsite but it was a slight bit hard to get some of our pegs in towards the farmhouse thing near the toilet block. I don’t know whether there was just stones under there or not. We managed to get them in though you just had to try a few angles!
We walked over the railway to have nosey at the shower block. The toilets and showers themselves were clean, but there were a few spiders and webs round the top edges inside, which you may expect whilst camping depending on what previous camping experiences you have had before! (The end shower however I noticed didn’t have any spiders round it so it was not a problem!)
The block had an indoor washing up area for both dishes and clothes, with hot water and big sinks. They also had a washer, freezer, dryer and a plug that you could pay to use using tokens purchased from the bar. The freezer was free (there’s just a little trust involved leaving your things in there – it was mainly used for freezing ice packs)
As we walked back over the bridge two steam trains pulled up into the station, which I really liked, the steam trains run past the campsite roughly each hour and stop at the station at the campsite. They don’t start running until about 9 and stop at 6ish so they cause no problems and aren’t really noisy apart from when they beep to let you know they are coming into the station!
During the week I used the showers (Well the end one with no spiders!) and it was lovely and hot. It was slightly difficult afterwards to put on your trousers without the bottoms getting wet, as the whole floor seemed to get soaked even though there was a shower curtain. My boyfriend used the showers in the men’s toilets and they flooded the whole room due to there being no shower base to catch the water!
The fact we were camped near the toilet block in the main field worried me slightly at first in case it smelt, but it didn’t smell at all and was kept really clean, these toilets were fairly modern compared to the ones in the other field.
The campsite itself was lovely, friendly families and couples mainly, and not too crammed like some campsites. We ate in the pub one night and the food was absolutely gorgeous. We would have eaten there again but we only tried it on the last night there! The portions were huge; food was great quality and the service very good. The pub also had a playground which the kids from the campsite would go an play on - although from the campsite they would have to walk through the carpark on their own.
People in previous reviews have mentioned the cockerel. I heard it during the day, but it wasn’t as near as I expected it to be, it didn’t wake me up, lets put it that way, it was more the kids playing early morning that woke me! J I didn’t see the cockerel as a problem at all.
In previous reviews someone also mentioned the road. We were pitched next to the road and yes you did hear traffic, but I live near a main road anyway so wouldn’t have noticed it. It isn’t a busy road like in a city let’s put it that way. It’s quiet at night anyway, so it didn’t bother us. The only thing that woke me up first morning was the bin truck pulling on to clear the bins – as they are next to the toilet block.
The campsite in relation to doing things and nearby attractions was in a perfect place. We had the car so we could go wherever we wanted but we easily travelled to Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Cricieth, and a few other places all within a half an hours drive. We also had a drive to Harlech, which took about 40 minutes.
Some attractions I would recommend are Cricieth castle, Caernarfon castle, Harlech castle and the walkers café in Harlech if you want to travel down that way, Sygun copper mine, Slate mines, Glasfryn Park (Quad Biking, Mini Quad Biking, Go Karting),Snowdon Mountain Railway and black rock sands at Porthmadog where you can drive your car on the beach! Beddgelery which is down the road in the opposite direction of Caernarfon is very pretty and has a lovely little bridge and river. We ate outside next to the river one night at a pub there which was very good.
There is a Tesco and a Morrisons in Caernarfon, which are a ten-minute drive from the campsite, and there is a petrol station in the direction of Caernarfon about 5 minutes from the campsite.
If you don’t have a car to travel to places or don’t want to, there are buses you can get and obviously the Welsh Highland railway can take you to Caernarfon and a couple of other places. (We didn’t use either of these simply as we had the car)
Overall I thought the campsite was brilliant and my boyfriend and me would definitely stay there again.
Good: Ideal for travelling on the Welsh Highland Railway and a good bus service to Beddgelert and Caernarfon, flat pitches and well drained despite almost constant rain for last few weeks, pub is child friendly and food is reasonably priced, clean/modern toilets in main field, good washing up / laundry facilities and although you had to cross the railway line they were still only a minute walk away in the next field.
Bad: Although toilets were nice there were only 2 in the main field, the path to the shower / laundry / washing up block would benefit from some maintenance.
Minor quibble though not the fault of the site: Road noise, though I imagine the other side of the field would be better, midges though I wasn’t bitten they were annoying in the evening.
No comment: Showers (we were only there one night and didn’t use them), cockerel (vaguely remember hearing it but it didn’t disturb me… I think it affects certain pitches more than others and this sort of noise is to be expected when camping)
A lovely site, well kept with very friendly staff. We were made to feel very welcome and the Welsh breakfast is a must. Shower block and toilets were ok just a few steps from the main site. Plenty of choice to drink and eat. We will be coming here again.
Nice Bar staff Nice Welsh Highland Bitter Nice Looking Site Nice Views Nice Food in pub - slightly over priced for what you get Steam trains are nice Toilets - okay but not brill
Bad Points That cockerel just doesn't know when to shut up morning, noon, and nights all the time going on and on and on Shower is in a bit of a silly location and out of site. Must be lots of rocks under the site where you pitch, bit annoying when you are trying to knock in tent pegs. A full tour of the site would have been nice when we arrived, especially when pitch no 37 wasnt signposted. A couple of flies even when it was raining constantly for 4 days
This is a great site. The shower block is being replaced so show a little patience while the new owner gets it done. As for the cockerel - it doesn't belong to the site but what noises do people on this site expect in the countryside? It's far better than the sound of asmatic pigeons coughing every morning in town surely. The food is brilliant, and there's lots of it. The beer is great and there's a good choice. The scenery is beautiful, and where else is there a train stopping on site to get you around so you can leave the car and not worry about drink driving.
Glanllyn is situated on the shore of Lake Bala in Wales. 16 acres of natural parkland and spectacular views of nearby hills and mountains make it an idyllic spot to pitch a caravan, motorhome, tent or campervan with level grass or hardstanding pitches. For water sports enthusiasts there is a private shingle beach with easy launching area for windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding. Camp shop, wifi, laundrette, excellent heated toilet & shower facilities. The market town of Bala is 3 miles away with plenty of small shops, pubs & retaurants, cinema and a leisure centre. Here is our review of the site, I don't want too repeat to much of what people have already said before but here goes:
The good bits: -Beautiful views -Toilets and showers spotlessly clean -Excellent pub grub -The train going through the site was a real novelty. -By day two none of us heard the cockeral.
The not so good: -Pitches felt very crammed in together -Only three showers, and two wash hand basins for all the ladies on site (and even less for the men!) -Long walk over the bridge to the washing up rooms and shower blocks, through a field with two loose bulls! -Expensive laundry facilities. -Expensive site.
It does have the potential to be a great site but had the feel that it wasn't very well looked after by the pub. Most sites I have visited have got a warden who checks up to make sure everyone is a happy camper but we didn't see anyone from the pub. On out last night there were some really noisy people shouting and swearing until well after midnight, with a wardened site, this would not have been allowed to happen.
Some money spent on this site could turn it into a real gem. There are large out buildings on the site that could be turned into better shower and washing up facilities closer to the campers.
Showers, as mentioned, a bit rubbish, and not cleaned very regularly. At the same time, they were free and the water was toasty hot.
Location-wise, it's not quite in the heart of Snowdonia. You can see Snowdon on a clear day but it's still a drive to get to the base.
The pub is ok. Didn't try the food, but decent ales and friendly staff. And hey, it's a pub serving real ale just seconds walk from your tent so who's complaining??
And as for that bloody cockerel.we were pitched right beside him and between himself and his geese-mates, we were woken very early (which hurt after sampling the real ales in the pub.)
There's a reasonable busy road running alongside the campsite which could be a bother for some but if you're not one of the pitches beside the road, it's probably not a problem. Very pretty river by the site and kids will adore the narrow gauge steam train that pulls through the site every so often.
Stayed here for the Easter weekend and didn't feel too overcrowded.
Site - Very Good,
Showers - Rubbish, all has been said in previous reviews.
Pub - Great, good food, good beer, child friendly.
Area - Magnificent, great walks up Snowdon ,if a bit surreal to think you are on a fairly quiet walk only to get to the top and theres leterally hundreds up there.
The Cockeral - He was there every morning but didn't particularly bother us and we were only 30' away.
All in all if the owners could do something to sort the showers out would be a great site.
I liked it - very clean, flat, no hard-standing but field seemed well-drained and we didn't get stuck. Hook-ups are well spaced, and as we were there so early in the year there was no problem with overcrowding.
Yes, the facilities are basic - a toilet block and disposal drain in the main field and a shower block a short walk away over a foot bridge. But all were scrupulously clean and fully functioning.
There is a smallholding next to the site but it didn't bother us in the slightest - maybe the cockerel was lying low? We could hear him through the day but it wasn't at all troublesome, he certainly didn't wake us up.
There was no noise from the pub (surprisingly, as we were there Friday and Saturday night), and although we didn't eat there, we did stop in for a drink. Staff and customers were very friendly.
The train doesn't start running until mid-morning so caused no disturbance, and what a lovely thing to see it steaming through the site!
The scenery is glorious, and the location is almost idyllic - close enough to Caernarfon to be easily accessible but set amongst beautiful countryside so there was an illusion of remoteness.
My only quibble.it was a tad expensive - £16/night + £2/night hook-up. Worth it though, we had a lovely time!
Sorry, wont be going back! 2 stars, just, in my opinion. So wish had checked the reviews on here first. Live and learn. Cockerel is still there along with his two other cockerel chums, laid awake every morn from 4.30 - 5ish playing big cockerel, middle cockerel, little cockerel, each sounded different! Soon joined by their geese friends and the huge bulls in the bottom field. Lovely. The views are spectacular but that does not make up in any way for the lack of customer satisfaction, had to go into pub for pitch location, was just handed plastic tag with number on it. Pitches with EHU are around edge of field and no pitches are clearly marked, non hooks dotted around all over place which made it very difficult to get access to our tent in the car if went out anywhere. Our pitch sloped slightly which in itself is not a problem but it was extremely lumpy and uneven, quite stony too, pitched in pouring rain so not time to fully clear, hence hole through both the bottom tarp and the inner ground sheet. Brand new tent, first time pitched so not happy. Water points are now marked drinking water but there was no where to dispose of waste water unless you trekked over the rail bridge and down to the toilet/shower/laundry room. There were two toilets in the main field but for the first 3 nights the light in one was broken so down to one loo for everyone to use, mix sex loos, not pleasant for any woman and sorry to say quite worrying with all things going on today. Not happy letting my teenage daughter use them. When the light finally got fixed they were put on a timer. I in desperation one very wet night used the loos and was plunged into complete darkness in less than a minute! Not nice at 2am! Ladies also be warned these toilets do not have seats, you know what it's like with men leaving spray everywhere! No hot water for washing hands. The toilet block in other field (which is much less used so couldn't quite work out why main block was in the back field) was no longer clean or neat as described in earlier reviews. Spiders! They grow them big in Wales!I was reduced to using one cubicle only as the other two had eight legged lodgers, The showers either burned several layers of skin off you or you spent rest of time playing press the button to get wet. No where to hang towels, clothes or put your toiletry bag, floor or no-where I'm afraid. Also no hot water from sink taps here too. Amazing how you can soon learn to wash your hair in a washing up bowl in the tent and strip wash to keep clean. We soon learnt to not drink too much after 9pm to avoid the walk over the bridge as neither I or my daughter felt particularly safe in the pitch blackness. We resorted to using the pub toilets during opening hours, at least they were clean, flushed properly had loo paper and soap and hot water to wash your hands. The pubs dog meandered around the site all day, other folks had dogs on site but cleaned up the mess but the pub dog just went wherever and there it stayed, including leaving us a gift right outside our tent! Plus side, yes we did find some, pub is a real ale pub and plenty of choice changing barrels almost daily, food excellent, very generous portions and all superbly cooked. The Welsh lamb and beef is a must try. Site is well located for hiking throughout area and ten min car drive to Caernarfon. Mt Snowdon a must do, but very very expensive, cost £78 for a family of four, (and we couldn't see a thing from third of way up because of cloud) we walked it the next day, free but what a haul! DO NOT believe what the guide books tell you about the time it takes to ascend and descend the mountain. It took us 6 3/4 hours round trip so leave plenty of time for your walk as coming off the mountain in near darkness is not funny! Experienced walkers but this was a shock to us, the top third of the ascent is particularly hard, the track has been newly covered with stone, not shingle but dirty great big loose rocks. Don't attempt this climb if you are not reasonably fit, I myself ripped a thigh muscle and I am fitter than most as long distance runner. Views are worth the effort but not your life! The Welsh countryside was beautiful and the people always so happy, I think Wales should be awarded a certificate for having officially happy people!
