We have been to Stoke Barton Farm campsite on several occasions. What a fantastic site. We love the set up, it is really simple and back to basics, just the way we like it. There are some permanent caravans dotted around the site but it is so spacious that you hardly notice them. The meadows are used for hay to feed the livestock and you are encouraged to keep off the middle of the fields to protect this. The plus side of this is that even if the site is busy it never feels crowded.
The toilet facilities are good, there are several dotted about. They are well kept and well cleaned. There are however only a few showers. But that said we have never had to queue.
The walk to the pub at Hartland Quay is lovely, about 20 minutes to half hour depending on how fast you walk. Oh, I should mention that this could be pretty breezy. This is because the whole area is right on the top of the cliffs.
The area is great for kids. Plenty of room to run about, and also some good rock pooling opportunities by the quay.
All in all, a lovely site, as long as it is not too windy.
The site was easy to find and we chose our own spot just before the heavens opened!
Owners very helpful and even offered to order us a daily paper
Lovely views to the coast and Lundy. Coast path goes through the farm so we had a great time exploring. Pub at Hartland Quay much appreciated before we went back to the van
New toilet block very good. The shower block was down near the farmhouse but enjoyed the walk
Loads of space in the pitching area. DId not notice at first that several vans were not in use so worth trying to go near one of these if you like solitude
Very nice campsite, only grouse was the trek to the showers and the fact they were quite a tight fit and as stated before the push button is a bit annoying but I found that If I leant back against the button I could keep it on the whole time I was in there
The owners were very friendly and charged my phone up for me with no charge (the phone reception for T mobile was very poor in the campsite & surrounding area - found it worked if you stood 5 yards away from the toilet block)As it was september, we took the owners advice and pitched right in the sheltered bottom corner,we were glad we did as on our last night a storm blew up and broke a few poles on the more exposed tents!
The site is ideal for walking the coastal paths, the path to hartland Point is quite strenuous as there are a lot of 'uppy downy's',the path to Welcombe Mouth past Spekesmill water fall is excellent,a flatter cliff top walk with excellent views, don't miss the great sunsets from hartland Quay !
This was a lovely campsite, easy to find down some nice winding country roads. The farmer was on hand to great us and showed us to a large field flanked by hedgerows that offered some well needed shelter from the winds. First impressions were the abundance of space available to each camper.
Obviously when you visit north Devon you expect high winds but this place although remote, wasn't too exposed and although the wind blew but the tent held firm. The toilet blocks are clean and have plenty of cubicles.
The small farmhouse has a lovely garden and inside can seat 25 people for what I can only describe as one fo the most declicious cream teas I have ever eaten. The price (£6) is a little steep for 2 scones and tea but it was delicious.
The showers are good quality and warm. The local facilities are Hartland Quay, about 10 mins by bike or 3 mins by car. Don't cycle unless you have legs like Roberto Carlos, the cycle back is a monster! a beautiful pub, with stunning views awaits thouhg, and a nice pebble beach approximately 500 yards long.
Overall the campsite and local surroundings, are very good and excellent value for money.
Just come back from a fantastic week camping at Stoke Barton Farm camp site. What a spacious and unspoilt site in a lovely setting right on the coast, with sea views across to Lundy Island. What made the site is the attentiveness of the owners, Colin often came past to check we were ok and would always stop for a chat.
The pitches were not over crowded and there was no issue about space, I have never been to a campsite where there are 3 large fields which haven't been crammed full of tents! It was great for our Son to come out of the tent and fly a kite, ride his bike and generally run about, without being on top of other tents.
The facilities were very good, although the showers could have been a little closer (bikes came in handy). The new toilet block and washing up facility was excellent, always very clean and lots of hot water. I thought the radio playing in the toilets and magazines was a nice touch!
There were showers and laundry facilities down at the main house which were very good, although the showers could do with a temperature control. There was also a book swap which was handy as I was out of action for a couple of days.
There is a coastal walk at the bottom of the site which takes you to Hartland Quay which we loved. For a small cove it had everything you need on a beach - great waves for body boarding, sand and rock pools, plus a pub. The pub does get busy so arrive early, there were pubs in the Hartland village (which was lovely - like something out of another age) I wouldn't recommend the Kings Arms though.
There are plenty of activities nearby, the Milky Way adventure park was ideal for wet days with bumper cars, rides, plus falconry and escapology shows.
We didn't get to see half of the things we wanted to, so will definitely be going back next year. We cannot recommend this site highly enough, but hope that it doesn't get spoilt as it is perfect as it is!
This award winning Adults Only campsite has a working 17th century watermill in a peaceful wooded valley within the Exmoor National Park. Grass and hardstanding pitches, all set beside the River Exe or the sparkling mill stream, with electric, water, drainage, and TV hook-ups. A leisurely stroll up to a weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.
Facilities include the beautiful dog walk, free wifi, fishing, modern toilet and shower block, dog wash, working watermill (tours on most Sunday mornings), salmon pass on the weir, shop, bus service, and excellent pubs in the locality. The site has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading directly to the Exmoor woodlands and rivers. Find out more here
Although the weather was absolutely awful, nothing could dampen the spirits of my OH and I at this beautiful campsite.
The campsite is well placed in glorious countryside, with a costal path very close by. It's an amazing feeling to get out your tent in the morning and see the sea.
The facilities were very good. The toilet block up on the field is apparently undergoing improvements at the moment, but in all honesty you couldn't tell, they looked perfect. They were always spotless, and warm (which is very lovely when having to pay a night time visit!).
There was also a washing up facility adjoining the toilet block, with hot water, and the necessaries for washing up, which was very helpful for my OH and I as we were staying in a tent, and it provided a sheltered haven to clean up in. There was also a play area for children with swings and a giant trampoline. Although I didn't use it, I can imagine I would of loved it when I was a kid.
The showers were a bit of a trek away; at least 10 mins walk from our tent and as the weather was so miserable, we took to driving down to shower. The showers themselves were spotlessly clean, and provided plenty of hot water, although annoyingly, it was a push button system and the water would only stay on for 10 seconds at a time, making it hard to have a nice shower.
The campsite owners were very friendly and helpful. We decided on our last morning to sample one of their cooked breakfasts. It cost about £6, and for that you got fresh, warm bread, and a cooked breakfast that was so big you could not imagine, and as much toast as you could eat. It was gorgeous food.
As for the local facilities, in the village of Hartland Point (about a 5 min drive away), there was a post office with a cash machine (although be warned it charges for withdrawals), a fish and chip shop, a convenience store with essentials, and a pub with very good nosh!
There was plenty around to do. The campsite is a very short drive away from the Atlantic Highway, which has loads of attractions along it. The Atlantic Village shopping centre is well worth a visit as everything there is very reasonably priced. Also the milkway is brilliant for families or fun loving adults (my OH and I aged 18 and 19 had a whale of a time). Also there is a massive Asda there, with everything you could possibly need.
Overall, it was an amazing holiday, made perfect with this friendly, and stunning campsite. 10/10!
Just come back from a fantastic couple of days in Devon where we stayed at this campsite. The campsite is big but the space between pitches is more than adequate to give you your own space. The owners are warm and friendly and they are very welcoming.
Nothing is too much to ask for as they were very accommodating to all our needs. There is a little walk to the shower blocks but this didn't bother us at all. There is a toilet block and dish washing facility on one of the fields which are clean and tidy. The rubbish area is clean and was good we were able to recycle our rubbish too.
We got to the campsite on a grey drizzly morning which soon cleared for a most stunning summers day. The view around the campsite is stunning. Sea, sea and more sea. A great view of the local church and beyond as well as being able to see Lundy Island too.
Plenty to do round and about - the local village of Hartland has all you need shopping wise as well as a pub, post office and cash machine. A nice little tea room too. Lots of local walks with stunning scenery. Hartland Quay is a good place to visit too whether on foot or by car.
Before we left on our journey home, we had a cooked breakfast at the farm - delicious - piping hot and so so tasty - would recommend this to anyone with a long journey ahead of them - and very reasonable too.
Highly recommend Stoke Barton to everyone - we are definitely going again - maybe later this year but most definitely next year. One of the best camp sites we have been too. (They offer pitches for caravans, tents and tents with hook ups).
We have just got back from what should have been a week on this site - we ended up leaving 2 days early.
The site is lovely, not crowded at all, in fact they only allow you to pitch around the edges of the fields.
Colin told us where to pitch - a slight slope but lovely views. He said when choosing the pitch 'you're here for a week so you will want some shelter'. Having read the reviews on here we knew it could get windy so I thought he was being really helpful. The reason we came home early was that after 3 nights of very strong winds mixed with rain our tent had started to leak.
Other than that - the loo block in the top field is clean and welcoming, the piped radio is different! The showers are a trudge down past the farmhouse and are push button, as previously between pushes but is lovely and warm.
The site is lovely as a base to explore the surrounding countryside - although do be aware of some of the drivers you will meet on the single track roads, we had several near misses with people going too fast.
Just back from 5 nights at Stoke Barton, there are 3 large fields, Colin seeems to use one for groups of people (so they don't upset anyone) there was also a football pitch and trampoline in here.
The main field was massive, the clean new toilet block was at the top and the caravans and tents were around the walled outside,so nicely protected from the wind, but from halfway down there is a good walk to the toilet. The showers we used were by the farmhouse in a barn, there was a mirror and a plug (bliss you can dry and style your hair.)
There is a fish & chip shop and about 3 pubs serving food in the village, the nearest supermarkets are in Bideford (about 10 miles) there is an Asda at Atlantic village and Morrisons in the main town, on Saturday they have a farmers market which was great for bbq food.
From the site you can take a short walk across a couple of fields to Hartland Quay, when the tide is out there is a part sandy part rocky beach, its absolutely beautiful and no worries of losing your children, when the tide is in there is nt so much room but you can still swim, Hartland Quay has a pub and a gift shop that sells great icecream.
We had a lovely time at Stoke Barton Farm thanks Colin and Helen.
I chose this location to camp as it was ideal for both exploring North Devon and for county hopping into Cornwall. The other attractions for me were being allowed a fire and sea views.
Firstly I feel I should note that I booked in advance for two people. On the telephone I was asked 'are you a family' and then if it was just me. Also on arrival we were asked if it was just us and if we were joining anyone. I may have misinterpreted but this all gave me the feeling that they aren't keen on groups of young people here. With that out the way, the owners were friendly, pleasant and helpful.
Most pitches here seem to have a good view of the sea. We had an electric hookup pitch and there are many such pitches available. We were pitched on a slight slope looking at the village church and Lundy Island across the water.
I quote from the website: 'Visitors are encouraged to find their own spot in the field so you can be as close or as far from your neighbours as you wish.' - This did not seem to be the case as we were met on the field by Colin and guided to a pitch. We were however, happy with where we were put and we weren't right on top of anyone.
I really enjoyed having a fire on the first night. There was a shortage of wood as their delivery had not turned up. Colin very kindly gave us a bag of bits and pieces which had been left behind by others and did not charge us for it which was awesome.
There is a nice new toilet and pot wash block close by which was very useful and nicely done out. The showers are in older sheds at the bottom off the hill. They are a little rough and ready - small with concrete floors but absolutely functional and clean with hot water always available. Only downside was 'dreaded push button type' shower operation. They also have a shed with fridges and freezers and a laundry which I used. The lady was very helpful in making sure I knew what to do.
I look forward to returning here but I doubt it would be with a group. I think the policy regarding non family groups should be explained on the website if there is any preference towards families. If this is the case, I can understand as some groups of people my age can be loud and inconsiderate.
I conclude that I just love this campsite. £13 / night for a large tent and electricity was very reasonable. The location is brilliant with great customer service from the owners and friendly fellow campers - I even bumped into an old friend! There are lots of facilities here, everything you could possibly need on your camping holiday. Highly recommended, especially for families.
Set in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Mendip Hills. There are 90 grass and hardstanding pitches some with hookup, for tents, caravans and motorhomes. The well laid out site has excellent shower and toilet facilities, including a family room, plus a laundry room and a well-stocked licensed shop selling local produce. Non members are welcome to book!
You can walk to the village of Priddy where you`ll find a popular pub serving food and the Priddy Good Farm Shop, selling a range of locally produced food. There are many attractions in this area of Somerset and the south west including Bath and Weston-super-Mare, and the site is ideally located, midway between Cheddar Gorge and Wells. We have just got back from 3 nights at Stoke Barton farm and apart from the weather we had a lovely stay!
The site itself is set is an absolutely beautiful location - (we could see the sea from our tent) - and is practically on the coastal path, so walks from camp are easy and you will see some spectacular scenery. We had an 18 month old in a back pack carrier and found most paths easy to manage.
One thing to note is that nearest supermarket is quite a drive away in Bideford so it is well worth taking along what you need, although the local store in hartland village stocks basics. You can order pre packed lunches, pasties etc from the farm house (we didn't try these but would have if we had stayed longer).
The facilities on site are basic, (which I like as feels more like getting away from it all!) but toilets and showers were clean. (bit of a walk to the showers but not a massive problem). The shower I went in was the 'push button' type and although water was the right temperature it would only stay on for about 3 seconds at a time which was a bit annoying. Not great when trying to shower a reluctant toddler either but we managed! I did notice that there was a baby bath available for smaller babies which I I thought would be useful for some.
There is a play area, and animals (rabbits, horses, sheep, chickens etc) to keep kids mused and also a football pitch and trampoline in one of the camping fields so plenty for children to do. The site itself is a very safe area for kids to play in as there is a big open space (tents arranged round the edge) so kids can play in the middle where they are in full sight and there are no roads to worry about.
The family running the site are incredibly welcoming and helpful, and I liked the fact that use of fridges, freezers, showers, microwave, phone charging etc is all included in price which is unlike some other sites I have stayed at.
All in all a very pleasant campsite and we would definitely stay again if we ever plan another holiday in this area.
No need to squeeze into a tight pre-marked pitch, we had the whole field to choose from. Colin and Helen were really helpful and soon pointed out the best place to pitch with wonderful views. Considering we were 2 large families with large tents it was great not to be restricted.
Yes - the new toilet block and showers are a bit of a walk. But this is camping!
The kids were very happy having use of the playground and trampoline and we felt very confident of their safety.
Free use of freezers and fridge, even a microwave, which is great with 2 x one year olds!
Lots of info re: surrounding area, walks, pubs, etc.
Walk from the site down to the Hartland Quay pub is a must.
A farm site with two large fields and as others have mentioned very clean, quiet and loads of hot water especially from new toilet block in field. Very rural but maintains a rugged charm to it
Coastal path nearby so excellent for walking. We used to walk down to the local pub (Hartland Quay) for food and St. Austell real ales, pub is open all day and has spectacular views of the sea, however the walk back is not for one with a weak heart!
Abundant wildlife with Skylarks singing in the morning and Buzzards and Raven flying about, the Swallows are still nesting in the information hut. Paid £14/night for two with ehu
I have never really disliked a camping experience but some sites stand out from the others and this is one of them.
Apart from being in a particularly beautiful part of the world.
There are large camping spaces so everyone has plenty of room and right off the camping area are nice walks including one to Hartland Quay, the pub there I can recommend for food/drink.
There is a toilet block/washing up area in the camping field and showers near to the entrance to the site (a bit of a trek to the showers if I am being honest) and all are clean and well serviced.
The site has free use of freezers and battery chargers.
They also do (not free!) cream teas, breakfasts and packed lunches. There is an information area with maps displaying walks as well as places to shop and eat/drink which is a nice touch.
The owners are especially helpful and generally this is a site where you get the impression that some effort has been put in to fulfilling the needs of those using it.
We don't have kids but did notice a play area with swings etc.
While mainly very peaceful it is quite near the sea and we did have one quite windy night while staying there which kept us up.
This site gets top marks from me, I just wish it was nearer so I could visit it often.
Very friendly owners, clean facilities and a great location. There are two lots of toilets, one set in the main camping field and the others by the farmhouse near the showers.
It was great waking up in the morning and having that sea view.
The only downside for me was that it was very windy, but that's what you get with a sea view. Certainly made it interesting when erecting the tent, luckily the owner saw us and came over to help.
