Just returned from our first ever week at Stoke Barton. We loved this site and the area it is situated in and just happened to choose it as they allow campfires. (Sadly the weather made it impossible to have one). It was an unfortunate choice of week, weatherwise is was not so good (floods everywhere and high winds) so site ended up a bit muddy. The owner, Colin was very busy putting down gravel on the worst bits and on the sunny days it was drying up fast only to be soaked in the next downpour. The site is high up, with beautiful views and access to amazing coastal (and inland) walks, but the wonderful aspect makes it susceptible to coastal winds. It would in normal conditions be dry I have no doubt but not in a month where Noah should be contemplating a new arch!
The facilities are basic but clean. Loos are in a portacabin (not chemical) on the field (4 loos in ladies one out of use). There is a sink for washing up on the side of this but it only has cold water and is not under cover but this didn't bother us as we were in our caravan. There are bins for recycling as well as waste which is very pleasing. It is further to the showers which are situated adjacent to the farmhouse. I found the ladies showers very nice and ALWAYS clean, even with so much mud around. My husband and son found the mens ok too and also very clean (there are 2 mens/2 ladies). There are also two more toilets here used for the site and tea shop. Nearby is a play area with a trampoline etc looked fine to me but not really an issue for us. There are also facilities for battery recharging and ice block freezing (FOC)
Colin and Helen (owners) obviously work hard and are lovely people. On a day people with tents arrived and the forecast was very high winds Colin put them up in a couple of caravans overnight until it improved. He always seemed to help people get their vans into position when they arrived as well. It is a working farm yet even when rounding up his sheep he took time out to talk to us and explain where walks etc were.
The food from the tea shop is wonderful. You also can get take away pasties and packed lunches, order cooked breakfasts (we didn't) and newspapers. You can get basic supplies at certain times from the site but we just went to Morrisons in Bude or to the local shops in Hartland.
If you like peaceful sites or love walking this is one is ideal. We shall definitely return.
We stayed her on one of the many weekends this year that consisted of rain sun rain! the field was large enough to have privacy but not so far from the basic and very clean loos.
The site owners are very helpful and friendly, and we would recommend it, as was said before being able to have a camp fire was magical as was being able to watch the sun set over the sea from your tent.
We decided to try this campsite as an antidote to the overpacked or over charging sites in the Saunton / Croyde area when we headed down for a surfing trip at Easter. Since then we have stayed at the site for a further 3 weekends, it is well worth the extra drive! The loos and showers are basic but spotlessly clean, the field is not over full, and having a real campfire just makes the whole experience complete. The walking is superb, the pub and it's view are magnificent and world class. During our first visit lambs were being born on the farm, and it's been great to watch them grow! They do top notch devon cream teas at the farm (not tried one yet, but there are always a lot of cars around at tea-time) and breakfast is also available for the completely lethargic. What is fantastic is being able to get a packed lunch or order milk/bread (and other bits) from the farm. The nearby village has all you need for a bit of a camp out, or nip to Bideford for bigger shops (we loved the village though!) All in all everything you need is here. All the stuff you don't need (hurdy gurdy noisey stuff) is not here. DELICIOUS! Take some walking boots & treat yourself to a pub supper!
We have camped at this site many times during the past 8 years. Yes, the facilities are basic and it can get very windy at times, but the stunning location is well worth it. We have never had to pitch next to anyone else as the field is so big that privacy is easily achieved. This is a campsite for people who love nature and the great outdoors, it's close to the coastal path and popular with walkers. If you like crowded parks with lots of facilities, noise, and children running around screaming, then this isn't for you, but, if you like tranquility and beautiful scenery, and appreciate being on a working farm, then go for it, you won't be disappointed. The tea rooms are lovely and the cream teas are to die for. They also do a REAL full English breakfast. Actually, I'm thinking of withdrawing this review because I'm worried that too many people will get wind of this gem and spoil it's uniqueness.
This award winning Adults Only campsite has a working 17th century watermill in a peaceful wooded valley within the Exmoor National Park. Grass and hardstanding pitches, all set beside the River Exe or the sparkling mill stream, with electric, water, drainage, and TV hook-ups. A leisurely stroll up to a weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.
Facilities include the beautiful dog walk, free wifi, fishing, modern toilet and shower block, dog wash, working watermill (tours on most Sunday mornings), salmon pass on the weir, shop, bus service, and excellent pubs in the locality. The site has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading directly to the Exmoor woodlands and rivers. Find out more here
A relative who takes Duke of Edinburgh award students to this site told us about this place. He said the facilities were basic but adequate, which after four nights on site we agreed with. The mobile toilet block was clean as were the showers, which while push button, were spacious and the right temperature. The washing up facilities consisted of one sink outside with no hot water and there was no hot water in the womens toilets. To have a shower you had to walk to the main farm buildings, where three were available. This is foremost a working farm and things are pretty laid back, but there is a fridge and freezer for use free of charge. The site consisted of a small field near the farm for caravans and two huge fields which offered pitches on good ground with amazing views of Lundy Island. If the weather was rough I would advise you selected a spot with some protection from the wind. This site is a short walk from the coast path and the pub at Hartland Quay.
