Dear campers, we the site owners, Colin and Helen, would like to thank everyone who camped at Stoke Barton this past season. The weather has been the worst we have known in the 22 years we have had the site, but nevertheless we have been amazed at everyone’s good spirits.
It seems that Colin spent most of the summer trying to rescue wet soggy campers and pegging down tents. Here's hoping next season will be better and we hope it hasn’t put too many off! You all deserve a medal.
We would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year [with more sun!].
Best wishes Colin, Helen, staff, family and all the dogs.

I stayed at this site for a few days as a base for walking the South West Coast path in the area. It is well suited to this, being about a 10-15 minute walk to the coast path. As another review has commented it can be a little windy here, but Colin was very helpful and offered a pitch between two (empty) caravans for more shelter if required although I didn't need it.
The main camping field has toilets and sinks. There are further toilets and good warm showers a 5 minute walk or so away at the farm house. All facilities were kept clean for the duration of my stay. The owners also provide fridge and freezers in a barn (free to use) as well as charging for mobiles etc, although I didn't use this as I couldn't get a signal on O2 anyway.
The campsite is very good value and there are no hidden extras to pay for (e.G. Showers, car parking) as you find at some sites. The car parking is on the main camping field although it can get very muddy - Colin advised the best route to drive over the field to avoid getting bogged down. There are no facilities in the village itself, although a breakfast is available at the campsite.
The main camping field is huge and not at all crowded so no problem finding your own space and plenty of space for children to play. Everyone was quite from about 9:30-10pm so no problems getting to sleep.
There is a pleasant pub at Hartland Quay, a 15 minute walk away (or few minutes drive, but there is a £2 toll on the road) and Hartland village is about 30 minutes walk away or 10 minute drive and has several pubs, shops (open until 9pm) and a chip shop. If you're walking the coast path there are daily buses from Hartland to Clovelly, Bideford and Bude and although not especially frequent are at times that make it easy to take the bus out and walk back, provided you don't mind the walk along the (quiet) road into Hartland.
There are sandy beaches along the coast from Bude and several miles north, as well as at Westward Ho! Also the beach at Shipload Bay, Titchberry (a couple of miles north of the campsite by Hartland Point) has a sandy beach but it is a steep and difficult climb down to the beach so not advised to do that with much equipment. As another reviewer has noted Clovelly is lovely and close by (and you don't have to pay the £5.50 if you don't want to) but I'd also recommend Bucks Mills, also very pretty, with a waterfall on the beach, and without the crowds that Clovelly attracts.
All in all, a very good value campsite run by friendly and helpful people. Just remember there are few facilities close by, so you'll need to come prepared!

Our annual camping holiday brought us to this rural and remote part of Devon. Fantastic views of Lundy Island and the church tower of Stoke. Chose this campsite as it allowed fires. We only managed to have three as the weather was dreadful. We had gail force winds and battering rain for most of the week. The campsite is not sheltered but out tent managed to withstand the weather although we lost our annexe. Colin the farmer said we deserved a medal for staying the full 10 days.

We think Colin is the one who deserves a medal he is constantly helping people with towing caravans, pulling cars out of the mud and generally looking after the campsite. He also takes the children around to feed his sheep and cows. His wife runs the tea rooms where the best cream teas of Devon can be found.

There is a lovely 25 min walk to Hartland quay where a welcome pub serving hearty meals at reasonable prices can be found. Hartland village itself has three pubs a post office/general stores a small supermarket and a veg/meat shop it takes about 10 mins in the car. For a bigger shop a new Asda has opened just outside Bideford with a retail outlet village and a children's play area called Atlantic adventure.

Clovelly is worth the visit along with Lynton/Lynmouth. Sandy beaches can be found at Bude, Westward ho and Widemouth bay all of which are about 45 min drive.

If you want a all dancing/singing campsite than this is not for you. It is farmers fields with long grass very few but clean facilities with excellent views and a fantastic service from Colin and his wife. There is ice pack freezing facilities and battery charging.

I think that this is a great camp site but with a few drawbacks.

Positives first: facilities are basic but kept clean and the owners are friendly and helpful. They also sell wood for you to have a campfire at £3 per bag - we found that was plenty to keep us going all night! There is also a very nice walk across the fields and down the cliffs to the 'Wreckers Retreat' bar at the Harland Quay Hotel - not too strenuous if you're reasonably fit.

We were in the main camping field which has a toilet block with handbasins (no wash cubicles though) and a washing up area, however do note that there is no hot water in this block. It is a bit of a trek down to the showers which are located at the farm entrance. I wouldn't mind this if the weather was fine, but we didn't fancy slogging through the mud - so we simply stopped off at the showers on our way out for the day.

The only problem major problem we had at this site was the wind! Being located only a couple of fields from the cliff top means that you have great views out to sea and spectacular sunsets, but it also means that it can be very windy indeed (windy enough to make pitching/striking the tent difficult).

I would love to go back to this site, but I suspect that the wind will often be an issue simply due to the location - I know that there isn't much the owners can do about the wind and there are large hedges, but sadly they don't seem to make much difference to the windy-ness. Also it is in a very out of the way area which is great if you just want to chill, but if you want to go out and visit somewhere it can take a while to get there.

Visited this site at the end of july 2008, myself, my two kids and two dogs had intended to use our tent for the duration, but when we arrived, it was rather windy and we weren't able to put the tent up, a pole had also snapped, so I was just starting to pack up, when colin arrived and offered one of his caravans for the duration of our stay. This was very kind of him and I'm am sure should this had happened on any other camp site, I would have had to move to a bed and breakfast accommodation.

He sited a caravan for us, and after fixing the tent, a day later we managed to put it up, only for it to nearly blow away later on the following week, luckily we still had use of the caravan to take shelter!.

This site is lovely, loads and loads of space for the kids to play, great walks to the coasts.

There's no luxuries here, but it is all the better for that, ( unless you like overpriced, regimented sites)

Dogs are free at this site, which is very unusual in today's commercial climate, you are allowed camp fires and the kids have a great time.

The only downfall is that it can be windy and you need a sturdy tent!

This is a wonderful site. We can't recommend it highly enough. We were camping just before the schools broke up and the site, although not empty, was quite quiet but you could tell they were preparing for the busy season.

The facilities although not luxurious were functional and scrupulously clean. There are toilet blocks and cold water access on the main camping fields but the showers are located by the farmhouse (even from the furthest point of the field this is no more than a 5 minute amble). There is also a small playground for children, next to to a paddock. Our 2 year old had a wonderful time looking at the horses whilst bouncing on a HUGE trampoline. Also on site is the farms highly regarded tearoom - where they serve divine cream teas and cakes. The owners also offer cooked and cold breakfasts at reasonable rates.

The surrounding area is beautiful - it is a short walk (30 minutes with a toddler) from the site to the dramatic rocky beach at Hartland Quay (and slightly down at heel pub). The village of Hartland is about 3 miles away and has several well-stocked shops. There are also at least three pubs here, we only visited two - the Anchor Inn and the Hart Inn. The Anchor serves reasonable food at reasonable prices. The Hart was much more lively and serves really good food at prices which, although reasonable, are slightly higher than the Anchor's.

Slightly further afield you are close to the historic town of Clovelly (which although pretty is not worth the £5.50 adult admission). For those with kids you are also a short drive away from the Milky Way Theme Park (which we didn't visit) and the Big Sheep Farm Park (which we did and can highly recommend for any children aged between 1 and 100).

The only drawback about camping at Stoke Barton Farm is the big obvious one - the lack of a sandy beach within the vicinity. The farm is about halfway between Bideford and Bude (14 miles to each) and there is a lovely beach at Bude. The drive to either town is pretty and not too long (20-30 minutes depending on traffic).

So how do we rate Stoke Barton Farm? Its a terrible site do not go there! That way it will be empty when we go next year.

We visited Stoke Barton Farm in the windy may bank holiday weekend, and we think its one of the nicest sites we've been to so far.

We pitched in the howling wind and colin moved a couple of caravans for us to shelter the wind a bit.

It's a lovely big field, with basic toilets in a portacabin. Totally clean and completely fine. The showers are unusual at first, you go into a huge barn and there are 2 old farmhouse doors in front of you.Inside the showers are 2 completely private areas with room to put your clothes on a chair, towels on a hook, and the shower doesn't turn off every 30 seconds! Lovely.

We only stayed a couple of nights, due to the weather, however, would have loved to stay for longer. The surroundings are spectacular, and if you walk towards the cliffs, there are amazing views, and nice little coastal path that leads to the pub!

On packing away in a complete downpour, colin was hovering nearby to help push the car out if it got stuck, which it did.He even brought the tractor if he needed it.Luckily he didn't!

All in all, this is a fabulous site, and I would love to take the family back there when the weather is a little less inclement.

We didn't actually end up staying at this campsite, after turning up, we realised we needed closer facilities with a young baby. They do have toilets on the field, but the showers were down by the farm house. However we wanted to leave a review, because Helen and Colin couldn't have been more helpful, and we will return in a few years when our children are a bit older, as it is a beautiful place, a good old take on camping, like it should be, no stupid extras trying to get money out of you. I can imagine a great stay awaits anyone heading for this campsite.

Stoke Bartons campsite was fantastic, toilet block and shower area was always clean and tidy, very spacious pitches, in a beautiful spot just 5 minutes from the coast.

A mown path directly from the campsite to the costal path was a very nice walk, tea room served the largest scones and cream teas I've ever seen and at a very reasonable price. Owner colin was very friendly and was always happy to help.

The campsite is set in a beautiful area, in just a 20 minute walk you can be at Hartland Quay, where we watched the sunset. Hartland Abbey is a 10 minute walk at the most and I would have to recommend visting Spekes mill waterfall, the walk itself has some breath taking views and if you head down toward the beach (its a bit of a clamber over some rocks and rockpools, but well worth it) you can be at the bottom of the waterfall (we had our lunch there).

Other must see's are Hartland point, Clovelly and Lundy Island. I would recommend this campsite to anyone and we would definitely be back. Thank you Stoke Barton Farm.

My partner and I just returned from our first camping trip together and I am very pleased we chose Stoke Barton Farm. It is in an absolutely stunning location, only half a mile from the rugged North Devon coastline across National Trust land and so peaceful. You honestly can't hear a sound other than the birds and animals.

The owners are very friendly and trusting and this gives the site a lovely atmosphere. We were lucky in that it was very quiet and the weather was good which always helps. It was quite windy being so close to the sea so it is advisable to camp behind the hedge if it is a windy day.

Toilet facilities in the camping field are spotlessly clean (though no hot water) but you have to walk to the main farmhouse to use the showers. Again these are very clean with hot water but there are only 2 ladies and 1 mens shower so you may have to queue in busy periods.

The owners serve cream teas (so good we had to have 2!) and a cooked breakfast which we sampled on our last day. Food was fantastic and they will do packed lunches too. One word of warning though - the pubs and shops in the village have very limited opening hours so take your own food or check the times first, similarly with petrol, the nearest garage is in Clovelly and is only open for limited periods. We were driving around on fumes and had to drive 12 miles to Bideford one night to eat as everything was shut! Maybe we are just disorganised :-)

Overall though we would highly recommend this site - it is an absolute gem and we can't wait to go back!

A nice friendly site in a lovely part of Devon. We were given the choice to pitch anywhere we wanted in 2 large fields as the site was quiet. The toilets and basins are very basic in a portacabin and the washing up sink is not under cover. It was a bit of a trek down to the shower block and the childs play area was very sparse (a swing). The walks from the campsite out to the coast path are lovely and the large spaces meant the kids could run around to their hearts content. I would recommend this site if you want to get away from it all but bare in mind that the facilities are limited, which to be fair is reflected in the price. I would camp there again.

Large site with well spaced pitches. Friendly owners who encourage you to enjoy the area. They cut a path across their own land to link up with the coastal path which is really quite convenient. Wonderful setting close to Hartland Quay and the great North Devon coast. The views are great!

Owners run a small cafe as well. A Cream Tea for one is more than enough for two! Their pastys are a good take-away lunch for hungry walkers. Showers were very good for a basic campsite; rustic and tucked into the corner of a barn.

This is a large field, facilities include a toilet block and further up by the farm house another couple of toilets and a shower block. There is a basic play area, with trampoline and I think swings. It is a working farm and comes complete with sheep, horse, dogs and a cat called Basil.
The family are extremely helpful, the toilets and showers were always clean despite it being peak season. The showers were push button and warm enough at this time of year. The toilets did get blocked on occasion, but there are more available up at the farm house, if you don't mind the walk.
If you want all singing - all dancing 4 star accommodation, this is not for you. If you want good, clean basic facilities, spacious camping, fantastic location, friendly, helpful owners at a very reasonable cost, then this is the perfect campsite. We loved it. I never once felt that someone was trying to make money out of me with ridiculous extras, but if you wanted a camp fire wood was available, a breakfast or a packed lunch were available at a reasonable cost and lovely Devon cream teas were very popular.
The walk down to the beach/pub was great and the views spectacular. I hope to return soon, we had a brilliant time. The only reason I'm recommending it (I'd prefer if no-one knew !) is that the family seem so hardworking and nice with it, they deserve the business!

We spent three days at Stoke Barton farm in August. If only the weather had been as good as the campsite!

The main camping field is large, with a relaxed unmarked approach to pitching, The only downside to being so close to the sea is that it's quite exposed, and our first night in particular was a bit worrying, with high winds and torrential rain. I was told that Colin, the owner, had been towing caravans around the field to try and give some protection.

Camp fires are allowed, in fire pits or braziers. There are a couple of spades kept by the toilets in the camping field to dig pits with.

We didn't make it to the showers, but the toilet block in the camping field was clean.

There's a lovely walk across the farm fields (a path has been mown) to the local pub at Hartland Quay. Food served, and spectacular views. The village of Hartland is also nearby with a general store, hardware shop and greengrocer. So it's a beautiful remote spot, but with civilisation not too far away!

We'd definitely go back there - a lovely site that is well kept.

We booked into this campsite at the last minute as the site we usually stay at had mixed up the bookings.  From the moment I first emailed the owners they couldn't have been more helpful.

We arrived on the 29th of July, the first dry, sunny day for ages and were given a choice of pitches all with electrical hook ups, by Colin (the owner).

Being two families, with two large tents and a gazebo we were pleased by thee amount of space we had. The children abandoned us the moment we arrived, the call of the trampoline was just too much!

On the second day we lost the children to Colin, he was amazing and so patient with them, there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't take them out to visit sheep, cows or to ride on the tractor or his quad bike, some times he had about 10 children following him around.

This is a truly wonderful site, with good, clean facilities, plenty of space and a fantastic tearoom. The children (two of which are 11 and 12 year old girls who used to do their hair and make up before going to look after the sheep) already want to book for next year. So look out Colin we will be back.
