We have just returned from a weekends camping at Trevornick and I thought I would add a review of our experience.
I went camping with my wife and six year old daughter, as well as two friends who took their own tent and dog. Firstly the site has a dedicated dog field for all campers who have dogs which I thought was a good idea, however it meant we were not next to our friends. This didn't cause any problems though as dogs are not banned from visiting the other fields provided they are kept under control.
Good Points.
The site has loads of great facilities for all the family, with a leisure park, fishing ponds, par 3 golf course and a superb pitch and put (the longest hole being 180 yards!) everything was very reasonably priced. Even in the well stocked shop things were not too expensive.
The location of the site is its main advantage. It is a ten minute walk, or two to three minute drive to the lovely beach at Holywell Bay. I would estimate the beach is over a mile long and is golden sand all the way. We visited on the last bank holiday weekend of May, when the weather was roasting hot and although the campsite was all but full, once you got on to the main beach it was almost deserted. Most people sat at the first part of the beach near the dunes, leaving the rest of the beach empty.
There is a national trust carpark next to the beach which was only £3.50 for the whole day (free to members of NT) which I thought was very good value.
The views from campsite are gorgeous. The best being from the 3rd tee of the pitch and put. The best place to view the sun setting into the sea.
There are just a couple of bad points I want to mention.
Firstly our friends were placed on a pitch next to the toilet block and bottle banks. It was a good sized pitch with a low hedge on two sides, but they were woken regularly in the night with people returning in taxis from the night clubs in newquay and using the loos before going back to their tent. On more than one occasion the sound of someone being sick in the loos woke them. Yuk! they were also woken early (6 am) by people throwing bottles in to the bottle bank.
We were in the next field to our friends and although not next to the nearest toilet block to us (we were in the middle of the field) we had a lot of campers crossing our pitch. Even stepping over the guy ropes. To get to the toilets. This meant we felt like goldfish at times with people staring into our tent as they walked past.
The only other thing to mention was that there was no seat or bench in the shower cubicle. The cubicles were a good size with really hot water, but with just a small hook on the back of the door it made the whole shower experience something like a mission on the Krypton Factor, trying not to let your clothes drop on the floor and getting dressed without putting a sock covered foot on the wet floor.
Most of my grumbles relate to the lack of consideration of other campers and this would not stop me booking again. I will however be very careful to book a pitch on the edge of one of the fields away from the toilet blocks.
We have been going to Trevonrick every year for 5 years - sometimes for a week. Sometimes for 3! This is a large five star holiday park, not a campsite, but you are not hemmed in like battery hens. I think the reviewer who said that probably had a bad time with the weather last year. No ones fault.
Takeaway and restaurants are good - entertainment great, children didn't want to leave the children club and we couldn't go on a day out until they had had their morning there!
Beach is stunning, just a few minutes walk away, we all love the fishing and golf (my son learnt to fish at Trevornick) and the go-karts on the fun park next door are ace.
August is busy. Very busy. Don't come if you are looking for peace and quiet on site - although noise has never been a problem at night with security patrolling. It's a holiday park after all. We often vist in June when its much more peaceful and quiet. We love both the holiday fun of august and the tranquil peace of June.
Love it here. We go to other places 2 or 3 times a year as well, but always come back to Trevornick. Its a special place. We always catch up with other returners too and meet up for a drink in the Clubhouse.
Wouldn't miss my week here for anything. The kids would kill us!
I think all these rave reviewers are mad we went for a week in august granted the weather was awful but so was the campsite. This is not what camping is about you are hemmed in, the club house was uninviting and there is possibly the worst takeaway on site that I have ever had the misfortune to try.
On the plus side the shop is good, the hire facilities are good and the surrounding area and local beach is beautiful but it needs to be so you can get away from this awful campsite.
That's what sums up 'Trevornick' we have had two super holidays now in Holywell bay, it's all we want out of a site. We took the dog which was just fab, the dog walking field was well kept and nice and spacious. It's an extremely dog friendly site!
The pitches are clean, tidy and extremely spacious compared to other sites. The views are out of this world, loads of things to do with the choice of a club or pubs to visit on site, you'll never get stuck for places to have a drink. Strongly recommend the pub quiz at the Sports bar and the food there is extremely tasty and well priced.
The recently new swimming pool was spotless and warm and very pleasant to sunbathe on the surrounding lie beds. The nice little funfair next door is ideal if you have children and the Go karts are good fun. The Golf course is fantastic over looking the sea, great of an evening to see the sun go down.
The walk to the beach 'Holywell bay' is a nice walk through the sand dunes, what a laugh we had two steps forward one back the dog was in her element. Overall we did'nt have one negetive point from our weeks stay this year at 'Trevornick' we even managed to get a nice tan LOL! Cant wait to return next year.
We also were there in august, have been going to trevornick for the last 15 years now the children all grown up just us and they potter down to join us, and bring our grandchildren.
We were on the red field up the top near dog entrance, and again, we have mud etc, we even slipped with our 4x4 so had to use 4 wheel drive sometimes. But I think they realise that the roadways must be done before next year, hopefully this was an exceptionally bad year for the weather! The entertainment could have been better at times but it was nice to see such variation and not the same for the whole of the 3 weeks we were there. Excellent dog walking, but quite expensive for taking a dog to the camp site, they love the beach which is dog friendly, the takeaway meals on site were excellent and site security was good as well,
The toilets were cleaned regularly I had a peak at the showers they looked fine (I have mine in the caravan so didnt need to use this facility) Staff were always friendly
Another nice place to go for a meal other that what was written in the other august review, is the Anvil in the cubert village, it has recently changed hands and the person who owned the smugglers den has recently bought the anvil, all local food cooked as you order it.
Golf and pitch and put were fun for everyone and best times early morning or late pm, so you don stand in queues waiting as it gets quite packed.
Next door to camp is holywell bay leisure centre, tokens can be bought cheaper at reception and they cater all rides for all ages,
We will be back and this bad weather has not put us off and have booked our pitch for next year, if you check web site and want to book you can choose what pitch you want and it tells you the size.
There is a variety of pitches and you can have a basic non electric or one with just EHU or a pitch with tap for water, tv connection which also gives you a free movie channel and they feed certain movies dvd at certain times of the day,and of course your EHU.
I think the managerial staff realise something has to be done about the roadways and will do major improvements over the winter, Please do not be put off about this muddy summer, most camp sites probably had the same problem,
Excellent site for all ages and such a pleasant beach either walking to or 2mins drive down the road, just hope the weather better next august so we can visit it abit more!
We camped in the worst weather, heavy rain and gales and had to cut our holiday short when our tent broke. I would like to congratulate the staff at Trevornick for the great job they did of keeping the site's toilets and showers so clean. The hire shop was fantastic and prices were very reasonable. This is the second time that we have stayed at Trevornick and it is a great site, and last year our holiday was brilliant. It is a great base for Newquay and the beach, with plenty of places to eat out.
We have just returned from a week in a super - euro tent. Weather was a mixture of torrential rain and glorious sunshine , depending on where we were through the day. The euro tent was excellent in the wet - very well maintained and they are in quartets , with shelter offered by stone walls and bushes. Despite the heavy rain our site drained well and you have a squeedgee to rinse down the flooring. Beds v comfy and we all loved our little house with everything you need , apart from scissors !
Nearest supermarket is Morrisons 4 miles away in Newquay - was always heaving. In Cubert , just in the next village there are 2 mini marts and a fab fish and chip shop.
Everything is surprisingly near - Lands End 25 miles - Flambards theme Park is worth a visit as at the site reception you can get a voucher that gives £6 off the entrance fee. Holywell Bay is beautiful and well supervised by the life guards. The shop near by does sensational Cornish pasties.
All in all , loved the site and its amenities - clean and well run - only bug bear is you cannot get on before 3pm for the super - euro's and after a journey through the night we could have done with earlier entry to have a nap !You can use the facilities from 9am. We will be back .
Yes Trevornick is in a lovely position, nice walk to nearby beach if the weather is fine. The entertainment complex is just the right size and some of the acts were brilliant, whilst some of the others were below average. It has two restaurants on site as well. If you want to eat off site, try the lovely Smugglers Den, but please book though. Another restaurant nearby is The Odds.
My sister & brother in law came last year and said how good it was. Well if the weather is good, I would say the place would be great, but unfortunately the weather was awful and this is where some major improvements could be made. We stayed on blue field which is sloping quite a lot and has only one tarmac road into it, the other ways in are down the sloping grass roads / wide paths. As you can imagine, very wet weather and sloping grass roads do not mix too well, and as a result, it was a mud swamp. I think with the way the weather is going in the summer months, they should have proper roads. If you are going to drive out on grass, it's better to have a 4x4 as I do. Otherwise it just churns up the grass and turns to mud.
None of the pitches are on hard standing, just sloping grass and we had a normal breathable ground sheet for our awning. The water just ran down the hill and also turned this into a muddy mess. It was only when I was packing away that I saw the other people next to me had plastic under their ground sheet. They must have been before.
I stayed elsewhere before where the site was sloping, but was excavated flat for each pitch and the road was rough shingle / hogging which worked fine. You do not have to use tarmac, which is probably more expensive. I think Trevornick should do something like that.
One other point to make, is that the roads going in to all the fields are too narrow, it is impossible for two vehicle, let alone two caravans to pass each other. This forced you to drive on the grass turning this in to more mud.
Would I go again, probably, but I would check the weather forecast first, or wait for good weather and see if anyone has cancelled.
We stayed at Trevornick from July 18th to 29th with a full 8 days of glorious weather which made the whole experience very pleasurable indeed. Let me say straight off that Trevornick is easily the best site I have stayed at in five years camping with standards others should aspire to. I will definitely be back as the whole family loved the place. I should mention that our stay was a full week before the English holidays with an overlap of three days / nights. From the idyllic peace and space of one week to a very crowded and noisy 3 days will definitely make my next booking pre peak period. That said, what a great time we had. So much to see and do in and around that neck of the woods. The facilities were excellent, showers and toilets spotless. The staff were also great and loved the banter with the folk in the fast food outlet ! There is a hire shop onsite which hires everything from Wet suits to fridges and tv's ! Hired a fridge for our stay and with the great weather it proved invaluable. Pitches were on a slight slope but no problem. Full health spa facility also if you fancy something a bit different during your stay. Fabulous beach/cove, walk the road though, I found the dunes hard work although I couldn't get the kids off them ! No question I 'll be back and if you are thinking about it just book it, but be quick, you won't regret it. Thanks to the owners and the staff for making our visit a great one.
This was our first camping holiday we have taken and cannot see how it could have been at a better campsite than Trevornick. From the time we first booked it until the day we left, the staff were very friendly, cheerful and helpful. We stayed on pitch number 422, on corn field I think. A large number of the pitches have a slope but our field was relatively flat. So that is something to bear in mind when booking. We arrived at 9ish on the Saturday morning and thought we would have a wait on our hands but as no-one was on our pitch the previous night, the lads on the mopeds took us straight to our pitch. The toilets and showers that served our field were spotless and cleaned twice a day. They were also close to the field. Very handy for a trip to the loo in the night with the little ones! We went a week before the schools in the south broke for the summer so there weren't that many children there when we were there. The site shop had a good stock of everything you may need, repair stuff for tents and camping and caravanning stuff too. Also stock gas bottles as mine ran out half way through cooking breakfast! The beach is a bit of a trek with young ones but well worth it when you get there. Fantastic surf for body boarding, mixture of sand and a little shale in places. The beach has a lifeguard staion and they are very hot on keeping an eye out for your safety. Went to the club on site a couple of times. Wasnt as packed as some reviews state but then again the day we left the site looked full to bursting so would have been busier then. Watched the cornish comedian / singer. Very good. Well worth a visit. Take away was average. Swimming pool was faultless. Very clean, lifeguard present. Bus stop to Newquay can be caught outside the campsite if you wanted to leave car behind. Very nice pub called the bowgie inn in west pentire / crantock just a short drive away. Lovely ocean views and you can enjoy your meal on some decking in the garden. Overall, a very enjoyable first camping holday, and we definitely will be returning to Trevornick in the future. Having said all this though the weather was absolutely fantastic whilst we were there. Glorious sunshine everyday. Otherwise this may have been a different review! ENJOY.
This is our second time at this site, we first visited it two years ago. The owners have made some changes to the entertainment complex since our last visit. This site is one of the best we have stayed on, the park itself is spotless. The showers are immaculate and plenty of hot water, piped music.
It is in a lovely location and within walking distance of the fantastic Holywell Bay beach, to get to it you walk past the fishing ponds, through the golf course and over the sand dunes, it is a bit of a treck but well worth it. The beach is amazing, especially if you are into the surf!
Some of the pitches are unlevel so make sure you ask for a level pitch when you book! The golf course is attached to the site and has its own bar. The outdoor pool is heated and immaculate it was open 10 til 6pm with a lifeguard on duty. The farm club is the venue at night and Hayley looks after the little ones and does a very good job. The restaurant isnt as nice as the original one, its not as quaint but much bigger.
All the staff were friendly and this site is a credit to its owners. We love it and the location. We will definitely be coming back in the future but will avoid peak times as it is expensive. We stayed at half term and it wasnt too busy but August gets booked up quick, they were taking bookings for 2009! We have recommended it to several friends who have all said what a brilliant site it is.
We stayed on Pond Field very close to the Golf Club, we did have one or two noisy nights with some drunken teenagers but we think the site security sorted it fairly quickly as it didn't carry on for long. Our pitch was on level ground, and having walked round the site to look at other pitches for this year, pond field is all on a level. Pitches 16-21 and 22-33 seemed a bit on top of one another, but that could be the way people had pitched up. Think Hayfield & Cornfield are more out of the way and sloping.
The toilet/shower block close to this field was reasonably clean but the showers were extremely hot, almost scolding. It wasn't until the last night, when we were wandering about we found the family bathrooms and we will certainly try different shower blocks if the showers are still too hot on Pond Field.
We werent too interested in the club facilities so didn't try it out. Had a lunch in the cafe (forget the name of it), but apparently the main snack bar was closed due to staff shortages. Only had a jacket potato but it was well presented and reasonably priced. The takeaway was just closing when we went one evening and didn't have much left so cannot really comment on that one. They do give you a beeper so that you can go back when your food is ready for collection. Site shop was a bit pricey. We shopped at Morrisons on the first day of being there, and boy it was packed solid, you couldn't move in the car park or the shop itself. We got the essentials and left as quickly as we could. Best to shop somewhere else, think there is a Somerfield in Newquay.
Lovely beach within walking distance, across the golf course then through the large sand dunes. Some children were using trays to tabbogan down them. You can drive down to the beach and there is, apparently, a snack bar there. We are going again this year, but have booked a pitch a bit further away from the club house. Did a spot of fishing in the small waterholes (can't really call them lakes) but caught nothing. The Holywell Bay park is nice for the kids, and they don't need to leave the campsite or cross any roads. We did enjoy our stay, that's why we are going again. Trevornick is so close to some really gorgeous beaches, Perranporth has some brilliant rock pools but don't get caught by the tide coming in. Staff at Trevornick are very friendly.
If planning to do a bit of belly boarding/surfing, would advice you buy a wet suit. They are not that expensive (around £25 upwards). The surf can be pretty fierce, some of the children in our party spent a fair amount of time in the water at Perranporth and came back with bad grazes on their arms that weren't covered by their wetsuit.
Hope this helps you to have a good stay if you choose to camp here.
We stayed at Trevornick for one week in August and given the terrible weather we had in June/July, we were pleased that the sun shone every day for us. This is a huge site and we were on Hayfield which is about as far away from all the amenities as you can get. We didn't try the take-away or the restaurant so can't comment on the food. The shop stocks almost everything you might need but it's pricey - there is a Morrison's about ten mins drive away though. Our daughter loved the kids club and there was entertainment provided for kids every morning and night, you need to get to the club early in the evening to get a seat though. The swimming pool was lovely, very clean and well managed. The only negatives we had is the state of the toilets (we used the ones near the pool and the ones near Hayfield), they smelt awful and there was toilet paper all over the floor, we didn't use the showers for this reason so can't comment on them. The only other problem we had was that the pitch was sloping and needed chocks which we didn't had but we were able to buy some in the shop. The area is lovely and there are numerous lovely beaches within a short drive. The best ones we found were at Crantock and Perranporth.
Spent 5 days at this site and it was wonderful. Great site would recommend to anyone. Just a long way from home but worth it. My husbands first time camping and now he says all he wants to do is camp. Lovely hot showers which were cleaned well and daily. Lots to do and kids very happy and were kept occupied. The food in the cafe was excellent and stopped me from cooking. Wonderful holiday and fantastic spot in Cornwall.
Hi what a great place, stayed on pitch 440 corn field over looking rest of site also you get the sea view. The pitches are quite big easy get 17ft caravan, awning, car & 4 wind breakers on pitch. Considering there's over 800 pitches its usually quiet at night after 9.30pm. Great outdoor pool, 3 bars, shop & a good park for all ages. At the other side of caravan site is Holywell Bay fun park, its tokens for the the rides but if you buy them reception you get 25 tokens for £20. Great place we'll go again.
