Went to this site with my girlfriend for a week in August in a tent. Didn't know what to expect weather wise as July was terrible but was very nice when we arrived and when putting up the tent. Staff are very welcoming and you are shown to your pitch by a person on a scooter! Our pitch was large enough for a tent and car easily but was slightly sloping which was sometimes a nuisance e.G. Cooking and sleeping. It was close by all the facilities such as the swimming pool, shop, water point, pot washing and toilets. The toilet blocks are large but sometimes looked and smelt liked they needed cleaning more often. The showers are below average as you have to pay 20p for a first and get about 4 minutes of semi warm water. Also the boxes to put the 20p in are on the outside of the cubicle so if you need to put another 20p in you have to go outside! The club is good as the drinks are well priced and the entertainment varies each night. There is a restaurant and take-away also on the site. The swimming pool is large but there is not enough sunbeds for the size of the site and people were doing the classic German abroad! There is plenty to do in the area with Newquay just 5 minutes down the road and places like Padstow just along the coast. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Trevornick and would possibly go back again in the future!
Having just returned and read the previous reviewer all I can say is what a difference a month makes. The park was heaving with no pitches left on our first week. If you wanted to shower/wash at peak times then you would need to queue. On our first week the toilet facilities were fairly disgusting but for some reason this changed in the second week. Only managed to catch the entertainment once as the club was packed like a tin of sardines the other nights, the average wait in the shop in the morning would be about 20mins and I won't even go into the take away!
The standard pitches are huge, our diablo fitted with room to spare BUT be warned about 75-80% of the pitches are sloped, enough for you to feel like you were rolling out of bed. The kids facilities seemed good but for older kids there wasn't much to do at night apart from hang around the amusements, which had very few games but lots of slot machines! I would have to say that Trevornick wouldn't be my first choice but there were plenty of families booking up for next year before leaving.
We stayed in Sun Field, where the views out to Holywell Bay are outstanding and the sunsets, breathtaking. Sun Field consists of a large number of very gently sloping pitches without any services. Some of the pitches are just the right size for a large family tent and some huge, so when you are escorted from reception to the field by one of the many scooter guys, it really does pay to have a couple of drives round the field to pick the biggest and flattest. There were only two problems I had with with Sun Field. Number one, it can be a long walk to the toilet, shower and pot washing facilities, shared with Hay Field, especially if you pitch at the top of the field. Number two, boiling a kettle without a wind guard around your stove can take some time, due to the elevated position of Sun Field. We stayed for weeks two and three of the school holidays and although the site as a whole was busy, Sun Field never became overcrowded. In fact, for the first week we had no close neighbours and were able to use the surrounding pitches for games of cricket.
I never had to queue for the showers no matter what time I used them. A word of warning though, the newer showers are to the back of the block, in a new extension built to accommodate the family bathrooms. These seem to be hotter than the older ones, too hot for my children at times. There were queues though for the ladies showers, but this was due to three showers in the same block being out of action. The one time we used the family bathroom, we did have to queue. The bathrooms take 50p coins and seem to be timed rather than metered, so part filling a bath and then getting clean water later to wash the kids hair was not an option without inserting another coin. The floors of the bathrooms get very wet and there is nowhere to put towels and dry clothes, even the toilet seats are not present, so arrangements should be made to store dry stuff before you go in, bin bags maybe.
The walk from Sun Field to the center of activity is a longish one. The center of activity being a shop, take away, restaurant, slots, bars, children’s indoor play area, hire shop and swimming pool. The shop was well stocked with the essentials including some camping stuff, wetsuits and cold beer (twice the price of the local Morrisons, but cold). Fresh bread and croissants in the morning. The take away was more-or-less a glorified chip shop selling things like fish and chips, curries, burgers and microwave kebabs. The food was ok and quite welcome when you realize that every decent food outlet for miles closes at 9pm. The restaurant is on a bit of an ego trip in calling it self a restaurant and is serviced by the same kitchen as the take away. The food could be described as reasonable pub grub. (try St Pirans Inn down in Holywell Bay for really good food).
The slots were always full of children and teenagers with a few machines out of action when we were there. Still manage to part me from my cash when I took the kids in though. The bars were “The Farm Club” and early evening was children’s entertainment with games organised by a very good team. 9pm to 9.15pm was sale of bingo tickets, bingo kicking off at 9.30, children at the front being quiet drawing. Seats in the bar were hard to come by unless you got there early or happened to be stood next to a table full of people who had only come in the play bingo, when they left. There is a bar upstairs too, which ran a quiz after the bingo finished, but we never used it. We went into the children’s indoor play area once but didn’t use it because there was an additional charge for each child outside of the site kids club times.
The hire shop stocked just about everything you could think of from frozen ice blocks to windbreaks, 240v fridges to TV’s and surfboards to children’s bikes. The swimming pool is very good and well used. Opening and closing time vary due to use by the site kids club and other activities, but the times are always displayed on the pool area gates in advance.
All-in-all we enjoyed our time at Trevornick and will go again. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, the site is well maintained in general and is very tidy. The only downside for us, if you can call it that, is that we felt we didn’t get to use the facilities as much as we’d have like to, but that was due to the fantastic weather we had while we were there. The last full day we were there we tried the Sports Bar at the adjoining golf club for drinks and an evening meal. I really wish we’d found that place earlier. Sitting outdoors under heated canopies, drinking a cold beer, watching the sun sink into the Atlantic takes some beating.
Travelled to Cornwall on the night of the Gloucester floods and spent a very uncomfortable night on the M5 motorway, not the best start to a holiday. We finally got on our way just after 6:00am Saturday morning and reached our destination 23 hours 45 minutes after leaving Sheffield! The pitch we were allocated was reasonably level, compared to some of the tent pitches which were on a definite slope although as mentioned in previous reviews perhaps this is an advantage as when it does rain which it did the water runs away. At the end of the day you cannot hold the campsite responsible for the weather so onto a review of the site.
The showers and toilets were clean although not the best I've been in and considering the showers are charged a 20p a time a bit of a rip off I think, there was also nowhere to hang your clothes. Campsites that want to make an additional charge for such facilities should ensure they are something special and they weren't.
The club house was okay but I don't think it was really big enough for the size of the site and it was very noisy, the reps were doing their best to entertain the little ones though with the party dances. The bingo paid out decent money and we had a win, which is always welcome. There are several overflow areas including an upstairs bar with a pool table if you want to escape the noise. I noticed several dogs in the main clubhouse which is a bit unusual but a nice change for dog owners I'm sure as they are often excluded.
We took my son and his friend both 13 years old and they went in the pool several times which was nice and warm. The fun park also went down well and you get a free go on the crazy golf included with your booking. The kids really liked this site as it was not too large and they made friends with other kids their own age. The walk to the beach was an experience it looks flat on the brochure but its up hill and down dale over big sand dunes , nice beach though. You can drive and park in the pub at a cost of £3.00.
The sites about 5 miles away from Newquay and as with most sites like this you're a bit marooned.
This is a very pretty campsite with flower beds everywhere. That is about as much as I really liked. Our camping pitch was rammed on top of the next one. The pitches were like a chess board so close we could hear everything the campers in the next tent were saying.
The toilet/showers and washing up area were okay.
My other gripe is the evening entertainment. If we didn't go the the bingo session (we don't like bingo) then we could never get a seat. We were in the 'adults only' bar where the entertainment was definitely aimed at adults and not suitable for children and yet there were children everywhere. Most were lying flat out across seats fast asleep another reason why we could never get a seat.
Although the playground is aimed at under 12, our son was 14 at the time and this is where all the children tended to hang out. Maybe a play area for over 12's could be erected.
Although you can walk to the nearby Holywell beach it became a bit of a trek when you are loaded down with all your beach stuff. It was a very fine shingle beach and as we love sandy beaches, we always drove to Perranporth (nightmare to park unless you get there before 10. 30am) or Porth the other side of Newquay or one of the other many beaches around the area.
For the reason that the pitches were so close together and that the entertainment area's were not big enough for the amount of people on the site I would not holiday at this site again.
A fantastic site especially for those with pre-school children (but couples don't be put off!) Well landscaped and laid out, plenty of toilet blocks, rubbish disposal and all really clean and pretty. The pitches are mainly flat and you can pay more for extra wind protection or hookup. This site has great facilities but is not so large that it feels really hectic and all the staff are really friendly. The facilities were always spotless, loads of toilets, showers never crowded (though you have to pay 20p for hot water!), swimming pool very warm and jacuzzi was even warmer (although you had to fight your way in past the boys). There is a lovely shallow toddler pool. The cafe/shop/pub/takeaway are all well kept and reasonable, nice to see fresh fruit and juices and bakery items on sale too. There is a launderette and 2 family rooms with baths, but these always had queue of babies and mummies waiting in the evening. Path down Holywell Bay beach takes about 20 mins with young kids but is big hill on return journey, or drive and park in NT car park (free to NT members) There is a kids club in the morning, you have to stay with your child if under 7 yrs old. We didn't want to be tied to the site every day as like to roam around, but went on a couple of days as the morning activities tie in with children's entertainment from 7 - 9pm in the pub. They have talent competitions, make costumes, disco dance, have the swimming pool to themselves one morning just for the kids club. They also have guest appearances from local fun parks characters and farm animals. Our shy 4 year old really loved it and Vicki and her team are very good with the kids. You don't feel that you have to participate in everything but there is a lot on offer if you want it. We loved it despite gale force winds, a month of rain overnight and a leaky tent! Check out the Trevilley farm shop opposite Morrisons on outskirts of Newquay, they do some amazing baking and own meat and very reasonable.
Generally you would have to say that the facilities were good at this site and certainly the toilets and showers I saw were very clean which really is the essential thing when one is camping.
It is also generally reassuring to have a security presence on sight although quite how they managed to miss the gorup of middle-aged carravaners sipping cider and taking it in turns to streak around the campsite I will never know.
Also it does seem very odd that the pool closes at 18.00 as this seems a bit early.
For the price you pay you would expect the showers to be free, though as mentioned, they are clean.
I notice some people have complained about the slope. We were on a slope and were pretty grateful for it when it chucked it with rain as the water drained away to the flat pitches below us.
Would probably go again
The local 13th century inn, a 20 minute stroll down the road was really good value and the food was great too so that is definitely worth a trip.
Firstly like most of this summer `07 the weather was awful.
This had a negative effect on our holiday. We stopped on a super pitch which had mains water, electric, drain for grey water and a tv point (cable free from reception for a £10 deposit ).
Our pitch sloped badly,as did the majority of the pitches and because we were on grass ( no hard standing at all ) the rain ran like a river through the awning,we can still smell the mud.
The site was good though, very clean and staff very friendly.
The pitches although quite large were squashed together,I would not like to go in high season when it is full, getting your van on and off must be difficult.
The shower cubicles had no shower curtain, wet my clothes more than once and at 20p a go thought it a bit poor. The mirrors over the sinks next to useless unless you are under 4ft 6".
Playground was good and large.Pool clean but cool, one of the boilers broke down whilst we were there.
The beach was 20 - 25mins walk away over large sand dunes and 5mins drive but you had to pay to park up.
Clubhouse was ok but small, food ok reasonable prices. On site shop ok sold out of tie down straps too quickly!
There is a small fun park at the rear of the site, kids loved it but it shut at 4pm.
Overall a good site, the weather let us down, gale force winds and torrential rain.
I agree with most of the reviews regarding Trevornick, but, I would say how very small the pitches are, even the so called larger ones. We took our dog and I do understand you need to be in a separate field to non-dog owners, but these pitches seem to be smaller than the non-dog ones.
The previous time we went, the caravan next door couldn't get out of their pitch and we had to move our windbreaks to allow him to get out,. The space also to get your caravan actually out of the park is a bit difficult, at one time I saw 2 vans coming in the opposite direction with escorts on walkie talkies! Bit of a squeeze getting past each other, not for the inexperienced driver. We are not in a hurry to go back, except my son really likes it, which is why we went for a 2nd visit, good for kids!
We visited this site the week following whitsun to ensure it was quieter after the kids had left and having never really been to a professional site before with 800+ pitches and entertainment etc. We were gobsmacked how much we appreciated the heated, immaculate toilet blocks (of which there are 4 at least that we visited) with many many cubicals, music piped in to dance to in the shower, nice soft loo roll and never a queue. The shop was excellent, more like a spar that a small site shop selling all camping gear and plenty of stuff to keep kids occupied like colouring books. We had dogs with us to stayed on the red field on pitch 396 with electric hook up. It was spacious enough for our large tent, a gazebo, car and sunbathing spot. The bar with entertainment looked great and it was certainly busy but with our furry friends we were unable to go in so I cant verify the feedback from other campers. The takeaway is great though, about a fiver for Chicken Tikka Masalla and chips and it was proper curry not the microwave packet stuff and the portions were huge. There is a golf club right next to the site which has a clubhouse that allows dogs in and the dog walking area is huge, you can let your mutts of the lead and they can run as far as the eye can see. There is a hire shop which is reasonably priced for everything you can possibly imagine, fridges, tv's and microwaves just to name a few. The pitches on our field were all of good size and absolutely level. The site is about a ten minute drive outside of Newquay but being in Holywell Bay is absolutely worth it. There is a path way directly from the site down to the beach, stunning, beautiful, all the cliche words to describe the bay could be listed. There is a pub on the edge of the beach, nice food, pricey but allowed well behaved dogs so we tried it out and would definitely go back again. Bus service to Newquay and Truro from outside the site and very helpful reception with thousands of leaflets and assistance if required (we enquired about trains to Looe and they searched the internet for us and got us the times etc for the bus to line with the train). I would recommend this site, I can imagine it would get a bit mad in school holidays but there is a pool, play park and numerous kiddie activities so I am sure everyone can get some peace at some point. Prices are OK, about what you would expect from a site with all these luxury facilities.
We had the bank holiday week there - 26 May to 2 June. We were on the pond field - pitch 32.
We arrived at 10am and were allowed straight onto the pitch after first being asked to go to the waiting field whilst we booked in. I particularly like the fact that we were shown to the pitch by a lad on a scooter - an excellent idea when you are faced with a large, unfamiliar site.
The pitches on the pond field all looked pretty flat, and were set out in tiers. The ground drained well, and the only a few problems getting pegs into the ground which was nice grass but with plenty of stones under the surface.
We used a breathable GS (mandatory, but nobody checked)which was fine apart from on the Thursday - we'd just had so much rain by then that it was coming through in places so we just put down our PVC GS instead and all was well.
On the pond field I think the mix of tents to vans was about 10:90% so we were definitely in the minority. Some of the tent pitches over in the main camping area didn't look too flat.
Had some noise problems in the late evening from the usual teenager crowd, but nothing worse than we have experienced elsewhere.
The staff were very friendly. They have a new "restaurant" that opened this year. We ate there once - OK but nothing special. £34 for 4 drinks and 4 main meals. Service was pretty prompt, but it wasn't busy. The take away was open long hours, as was the shop which was excellent.
The pool was warm enough - even on cold days. Changing room was OK but a little dark.
EHU was rated at 16A and the TV outlet had freeview channels on it.
Washing up facilities were good - hot water was fine but they close these facilities at 9pm which is I think a little too early.
Toilet bocks were clean, but I had problems using the 20p showers in two of the cubicles.
They have a hire shop with most things available, but some of the children's bikes I saw being ridden around the site the brakes weren't working.pretty dangerous in my opinion.
Overall - we were pleased with our first visit to Tevornick. The only downside was that it was quite a long walk to the local beach, esp on the way back.
Superb site with excellent facilities but not completely free of fault.
1) the site is quite hilly with some substantial slopes. Not good if your under canvas! Maybe the booking staff could help put tents on the flatter parts where possible.
2) I got the distinct impression that it was a huge money making venture. No refund of any kind if you chage the original booking details within six weeks of your visit. I booked two pets to go (approx £55) and the day before one fell ill. Couldn`t take the pets and the park was absolutely adamant that we could get no refund-I mean, I ask you, what facilities does a dog use! I also didn`t expect to have to pay 20p for a few minutes in the showers and the other thing that riled me was the fact that I felt that all the campers there were squashed in like sardines.
However, knowledge is power and when we book to go there again, I`ll ask for a flatter berth and keep the booking to an absolute minimum and `add on` when we book in!
Just got back from Trevornick, Newquay the camp site is brilliant for families. My son who is eight, (who may I add gets easily bored), loved every minute of the holiday from the swimming pool ,Kanga club, amusement arcade , the playground or just hanging out on his scooter round the site. The facilities are excellent, the staff are so friendly nothing is too much trouble.
We travelled in to Newquay and visited the main beach, but I have to say we did prefer, Holywell Bay beach as it was much more secluded. The only down side is the journey to the beach it took us 20 minutes to get their on foot , but hey we need the exercise.
The site shop is fairly reasonable, we have to recommend the fresh chocolate croissants, they are divine.
We are already looking to book for August next year, and my son cannot wait.
For a first time camper we couldn't have picked a better place to come although very far from home.
The pitces are great and the whole campsite is spotlessly clean. There is so much to do we couoldn't fit it all in.
The kids who are 6 and 3 loved the kanga club every morning and of course we had to go to the disco each evening til 9 which was just about right for them, and I can't praise the staff highly enough.
Trevornick is also very close to Newquey and a trip to perenporth is highly reccommended.
We were pleasantly surprised by Trevornick from the moment we arrived. We are used to camping at sites with few amenities (Such as Fisher Ground in the Lakes) We have not been to a 'Holiday Camp' site before. I must admit, that we were a little wary at first. (Amusement parks etc not being our thing!)
On arrival we were met at the gate and directed to reception, which was about 20 feet away! We were booked in very quickly and efficiently, and led to our pitch by a very pleasant young man on a scooter.
Our pitch (327 Super Pitch) was ready for our arrival. The pitch was flat and tidy. However, we thought that for a super pitch it was a little small. We were using a Sunncamp Oasis 600 main tent with a Pup Tent and Gazebo. However they all fitted onto the pitch with a little planning. We had an electric and water hookup on the pitch. Shower and toilet block was a short walk down the hill. The block was clean and tidy most of the time. Showers were 20p a time! (Thought this was unnecessary expense bearing in mind the cost of the pitch itself)
The shop was fantastic! Well stocked and very reasonable priced. Selling provisions, news papers and gifts etc, there was not really any need to drive to Morrisons (15 minutes away by car!)
The hire shop was good too. We were travelling light, so it was great to be able to hire a toaster and fridge for our tent! They have most things for hire, should you need them.including TV (once again, not our thing.but each to their own)
The Cafe was very good. Nice selection and reasonable price.
Used the club house once. Great for kids (Kanga club looked great for the youngsters)
If you are into the Holiday Park scene, then this would probably be ideal. Two bars on 2 floors. Well equipped and clean and tidy. It just had that 'Bingo' feel to it. Great for some, but once again, not our scene (Sorry if we sound snotty, it is just that we dont do clubs at home.and especially not on holiday)
The amusements were not visited, however we did go to the amusement park, next door. Great fun! Recommended. We also took advantage of the Pitch and Put. Very Good! Almost like a full course. Cheap too!
The swimming pool looked fantastic. Although we spent most of our time at the beach.
The tennis court that you can see in some of the brochures is private.
You can walk to the beach from the site.but if you are planning on going for the day, we would suggest that you take your car and park at the pub carpark (only £2.50 per day, with a 50p refund if you go into the pub afterwards) There is also a National Trust car park about 50 yards further along the road. (£3.50 per day)
Beaches were fantastic. Life guards on duty, Snack bar and Surf Hire.
Some great pubs in the local area.
I would like to make a special mention about the staff at Trevornick. They were all well trained, efficient and very polite. They made the biggest difference from other sites. Well done!
To sum up, we would recommend Trevornick. A good site with great staff.
