WOW What a great site - So good we have just booked to go back Bank holiday weekend in Aug - the kids loved the beach, great because you can have a camp fire on the beach. Toilets and showers were always clean. Great waking up to hear the sea. My other half and friends took there boat and went diving - great slipway - easy access with a 4x4. All in all a fantastic site - Just what we wanted. An Ice cream Van even came on the Sat afternoon.
Just got back from Aberafon -we stayed in a 6 berth tent on the top field (pitch 74). The site itself is surrounded by scenery unlike any I've seen before you got mountains behind you and the sea in front, it really is amazing to see. The facilities are adequate and on the whole very clean, not much in the way of shops or pubs in close proximity but a short drive to nearby towns is recommended if you want that sort of thing. The beach offers some good rock pooling for the kids and campfires are allowed away from the slipway. The only problem we had with our stay was our pitch -in the top field at the far corner its like a wind tunnel and since the two nights we had there, the weather was quite bad (thunder / wind) it was near impossible to sleep-not down to the owners of course but something to be aware of. We felt the pitch was a little too exposed for tents and a few people left after just one night after the storms rolled in.
We admitted defeat after two and on the way out we realised we were one of the lucky ones as quite a lot of tents had collapsed through the night. Apart from the trek to the showers back at the entrance, in clement weather this would be a beautiful site. Clean and well maintained.
For us this seems a large and professionally run site - but you are very aware that it is a business and it it is of a size where it seems busy. As others have noted, you have to drive everywhere.
If you have a boat or enjoy pottering on the beach (stoney) all well and good. We met several people who said they were moving on to other sites.
We were comfortable, nothing to complain of - we merely did not like the place that's all
Just got back from Aberafon, nice clean site, toilets/showers adequate. The entrance to the site is very tight and we passed it once and had to turn around. As it is only single track with two passing places I would expect people reversing down the hill at busy times. I actually walked to the entrance when we were leaving to ensure no vehicles came down. As previously said the beach is full of rocks but great for our son who spent hours rock pooling. The pub down the road is very nice but you can't take dogs in and its not in walking distance. We found a very nice working Mens Club in Trefor (next village) which allows dogs in and children until around 9pm. Its location is near the bus depot and the end of the village, but again you have to drive to it. You can walk along the beach but its quite a long way and very rocky. At the minute they are widening the road so there are temporary traffic lights which is annoying at busy times. Overall we found the site to be very nice which met our needs but nothing was in walking distance and we had to drive everywhere.
FAB FAB FAB Once again our hosts Hugh and Clare ensured we had a fantastic time, we wanted to stay on the top field overlooking the sea but Clare warned us of forecast overnight wind [the weather not Hugh] so we followed her recommendation to stay by the stream, it was sheltered and lovely to here the stream, so peaceful.
The site has great facilities, improved since our last visit there is a shop and pub down the road. Great base for exploring the Snowdon area we still havn't managed to do it all, great relaxed atmosphere even though a few children and a couple of dogs, there was plenty to keep them occupied [playground and goats] also a nice beach, good dog walking areas nearby.
We had to wait a little while to exit the resort as Hugh [the owner] was towing someone up the access road, we have just upgraded from a tent to a caravan we found the access okay it is a little awkward for larger vehicles although Hugh makes it look so easy when he tows them up and down, it's well worth the effort though.
2007 was the second camping season we stayed at Aberafon and we are looking forward to returning again in 2008. The owners, Clare & Hugh, are very friendly and helpful and keep the site in excellent condition.
We usually camp in one of the top fields, overlooking the beach and near to the children's playground. It's so safe for our two kids (ages 7 & 5) and they love the freedom they have here. Book early though - especially for bank holidays and especially if you want / need electric hook-ups as many pitches don't have electric.
There is a clean toilet block nearby (basic facilities - 3 loos / sinks, 1 chemical disposal, 1 potwash) with the main shower block being further away near the entrance to the site. In my opinion, this is the only slight drawback - the showers are a good walk away and there is often a queue at busy times.
The beach itself has a slipway for launching boats and despite it being a stony / rocky beach, it's perfect for taking a walk along or just sitting and sunbathing when the weather's good. In fact, we spent several lovely weekends on the beach in 2006 (when the weather was good) and when the tide's out, the end of the slipway reveals a good area of sand where you can swim in the sea and not be worried about putting your feet down on something sharp!
Just down the road (towards Caernarfon) is a mini-market at the petrol station and just beyond that, opposite St Bueno's church in Clynnog-fawr is the excellent Y Bueno pub - great food with many Welsh specials. Well worth a visit.
We have had a few wet weather weekends at Aberafon and I do think perhaps the site suffers from inclement weather as it is in the shadow of Yr Eifl ('The Rivals'). We have been here in wet and windy weather and can see beautiful sunshine further round the coastline!
Never mind, the location and the site itself more than compensates and I am sure we will be returning for many more years to come.
We have just returned from a great weekend at this site. Excellent all round, from the warm welcome we got on arrival , to the whole package.
The site was ideal for our trailer tent and for launching our inflatable. Having access to the slip way from the site was a good. The kids enjoyed the beach and rock pools. The other campers and boaters we talked to we friendly and there was a good atmosphere from the regulars. The wash areas and showers were more than adequate , warm water and clean to a good standard. The owners obviously take pride in the site and this was seen in the help and geniuine interest they showed. We will be going back again soon.
What a lovely site! one of the best I have been to. Beautiful sea and mountain views, peaceful site. We spent the May bank hol here and are planning to go back in August.
We were in the field at the top with lovely sea views, we had the little park which my grandchildren loved and were never out of, except when they were feeding the goats which were a big attraction and really friendly. There are 4 toilets with washbasin in each, washing up sink, water tap and chemical point in this field and the same in the lower field. This was ideal as the main toilet and shower block is up near the house.
Theres a stream which runs down to the beach and a slipway to launch boats, the beach is rocky but still very nice. The lane coming down is steep with sharp bends, a bit scary at first but you soon get used to it, Claire and Hugh the owners will tow your trailer or caravan out if you want, as they did my daughters trailer tent for £2. Theres plenty of space on this site (no crowding) and its very natural and the sunsets are beautiful we can't wait to go back.
The scenery surrounding this campsite is amazing. Close to the beach and in an idyllic setting this campsite on first glance was perfect.
Unfortuantely the beach has very little sand, and if you walk to the left of the site along the beach you have to cross a rather large stream, which resulted in the whole family being wet at one time or another.
You are not able to have a campfire on the site, as stated on the web page. You actually have to go down to the beach for this.
Our area of site we were placed in had a toilet at the top of the hill, and a cold water sink. To gain access to hot water you had to go to the main toilet blocks at the entrance to the site.
When we went the site was windy, one of our tent poles actually snapped under the wind stress and the childrens playground is in quite old.
This is a favourite site of ours. Superbly located right on the pebble beach, you can camp right on the front, and there is quite a bit of room. It can get quite windy on the front though, so peg your tent well down!
Friendly owners, and basic facilities.
The pub down the road is very good. (You can walk along the coast to it)
The food is absolutely superb (a rarity in North Welsh pubs I'm afraid). Apparently they have a french chef. The pub is not dog friendly though
Just arrived back from out very first camping trip! What a great choice of site. The site was excellent - not commercialised at all and in a beautiful location. Clare made us feel very relaxed and welcomed. We had 2 very windy nights but fortunately the tent withstood the gusts - some of the campers on the more exposed parts of the site were relocated to more sheltered spots. Other than that the weather was lovely and quite warm. Only downside was the shower facilities - only 3 for ladies and 3 gents - it was busy on the site and the queues were long. Would not stop me from visiting again though - the children loved having the freedom to run and play and my husband and I enjoyed the relaxation.
Just come back from aberafon after spending the lovely bank hol weekend there.
Well what can I say apart from we had a fantastic weekend including the lovely weather we had.
The lane going into the campsite is abit scary, but we did it going in then got hugh and claire to tow us back out which was very good for £2.
We pitched next to the childrens play area which was great kids played for hours on there.
Also theres the field with the goats in which is very amusing for the kids mine would feed them every day,it got to a point where the goats would wait for the kids to come and feed them
The beach is only 2mins walk away which is a sun trap if not windy.
We are going back in august to stay for a longer period we enjoyed it that much.
We have just returned from Aberafon for a long Easter break (5 nights).
It is a lovely site with great views and direct access to the pebbley beach. Being able to hear the sea from the tent is fantastic. It was very friendly and with several smaller seperate fields it had a small site atmosphere. We were with a group, with 1 caravan, 3 vw camper vans and 4 tents, some with hookup, some not. It was great we could all pitch in the same field together. Considering the weather the mud wasn't that bad either!
The washblock was a disapointment though. As it was a very wet cold March muddy puddles on the floor are to be expected. However, the cold taps in the washbasins are REALLY forceful! You WILL get drenched whenever you press the cold tap and the floor will get even more soaked. The worse thing, which actually spoilt the stay for me, were the showers.
The showers are 20p for 3 minutes, which is not unreasonable. The coin meter is outside the cubicle which is pretty annoying as you have to get undressed, put your towel round then go back out to put your money in (not great when it's freezing outside!). Also out of 3 showers one had no lock, and another was out of order for the first day or two (though was fixed later on). I can imagine it getting really busy during high season. But my real problem is that paying your 20p's still doesn't guarentee warm water! The first day was fine, but then each day after that the showers were barely warm. When it's snowing, hale or sleating I really needed a hot shower, but not being able to get hot water - even by paying was pretty grim.
A big warning is the site is accessible only down a very narrow, very steep lane. It is tough for a fully loaded car but must be almost impossible for caravans without a 4X4. During our stay one family got stuck with their caravan half way up the hill. They ended up getting all the lads to hold the caravan while they unhitched the car and found a 4x4 to pull it up!
On the whole the view and atmosphere really do make up for negative aspects and would really recommend it for a short break.
On the basis of other UKCampsite.co.uk reviews and recommendations for this site we visited FOR 6 nights during the Half Term Hols - 3rd week in October.
I would warn anyone with a larger outfit, ours is a 7.2 metre Bailey Senator Arizona, that the access to the site is difficult. Approaching from the Caernarfon direction the entrance to the lane is on the right and it is narrow and turns immediately back to the right. The single track lane then winds downhill through woodland with a stream on one side and high banks in a couple of places. (There are no passing places whatsoever) There is one particularly narrow part where the side of the caravan was only a couple of inches from the rocky wall of the cutting. My wife was walking alongside/in front of our outfit checking clearances!
At the end of the lane there is a 90 degree left turn past the end of the owners' house into the main field. I made the mistake of pulling too far forward whilst we booked in and after struggling to reverse back down the steep drive up to the house unhitched the 'van, pulled it round by hand and then re-hitched. Hugh the owner came out and helped.
As we like seaviews we chose the top field and parked with the front of the 'van overlooking the beach. The field was mainly flat and well-drained. The views of the mountains and sea were STUPENDOUS - some of the best we've ever had. The sunsets and full moon over the sea were incredible and I took loads of photos. There were only about 4 outfits on this field with more pitched below us in area near the beach which is much more sheltered.
The first half of the week we had brilliant weather and even ate some of our lunches sitting at one of the picnic tables, the tables are provided for campers' usE - one just carries it to one's pitch. On the Friday the weather clouded over. Our eldest son drove down to stay with us on Friday night and it became wet and windy on Saturday. In fact by Saturday night it became so windy that we felt compelled to make an urgent move to a more sheltered spot at 11pm at night!
There is good access to the beach along a lovely stream. Some small children spent the whole day daming the stream and our children would have done the same when they were younger. The beach is VERY rocky but there is some sand when the tide is out. There is, also, a concrete slipway for boat launching and it is possible to drive down to this to lauch boats.
The main toilets are a long walk from the camping fields but clean and well-equipped. There are, also, small toilet and handbasin blocks on the actual camping fields. I think toilet facilities must be stretched in busy times. There are ample fresh water points but they are those annoying push taps with wide spouts so hard to use with water-filling hoses. I used a funnel in the top of the aqua roll as the best way.
There is a storage area for 'vans and a number of seasonal pitches for tourers on a seperate field.
The site shop was closed as it was out of season. The site does sell Calor gas. There is a small games room in an outhouse - small pool table, park benches and sky TV. There is a laundry room with coined operated washer and dryer next to the games room.
TV reception was variable. By pointing our directional 'van aerial towards the Anglesey transmitter we managed to get a limited range of digital channels using the digibox. Without the digibox we could get some of the channels we couldn't get on digital from the booster aerial on the mountain by pointing the aerial in the opposite direction??!
Apart from the beautiful location there are all the delights of Snowdonia and the Lleyn Peninsula nearby. We drove down to Nefyn on Wednesday and and did the pleasant walk along the beach to Porth Dinalen (?) and back across the golf course. We, also, visited the pretty harbour at nearby Trefor. We had hoped to climb Snowdon but left it too late in the week and so had to limit ourselves to a circular drive from the Ranger youth hostel through Bedgellert and round to Llanberis on the Friday. The weather was dull but passable at low level but the web cam half way up Snowdon showed a total whiteout with cloud and recorded winds gusting at 50mph plus. The Snowdon railway was only running to Clogwen and even that would have been a waste of money I fear. The Electric mountain tour starting in Llanberis looked interesting.
Caernarfon about 8 miles away is a good centre to visit with lots of shops, Tesco and Morrisons Supermarkets. The exceptionally preserved castle is, also, well worth a visit.
On Saturday we visited Pwhelli and mooched along the promenade and in the shops as it was rather wet and windy.
There is garage/shop in the main village about one mile away but we did not use this and, so, can't comment.
We paid £5.50 per night per person including electric hook-up. We, also, took advantage of the service(£2) offered by Hugh, the owner, to tow our 'van out at the end of the holiday using his 4x4. He did this effortlessly and deposited the 'van safely in the layby on the main road near the site entrance. He will, also, tow 'vans into the site if people request this. Hugh and his wife were friendly and helpful.
Would we go again? maybe but that difficult access is a bit scarey and off-putting even though I have 10 years' experience towing large 'vans all over Europe.
A group of us went for bank holiday weekend the site is lovely we had nice weather the fields were brilliant, views amazing, kids play area very good kept them entertained for the weekend but found the goats in the field at the side entertaining also. The only bad points were the toilets need an up date and at night there are no lights on anywhere on the site. Only one washing up sink on each field and not even undercover and water not very warm. Never really used the shop but only basic stuff in it. Showers a good walk away from where we were they were very small and cramped struggled when I took my little boy for a shower with me not much room. Personally don't think compared to the amount of sites we have been on there was enough showers, toilets, hand washing cause they were in the toilets and washing up facilities. Ideal for a weekend but could'nt do any longer.
