Good location and easy if a little hilly walk through the woods to porlock village and all facilities available and clean - super showers! The site wasn't very busy when we went as it was late in the year though the weather was lovely. Good pitch size and peaceful throughout the site at the time suspect it might be difficult for a tent on some of the sloping areas.
Third visit here-first in our 'new to us' elderly caravan! Lovely site-owners helpful and available. Good little shop and the facilities are excellent. Lots of walks from the site and only a short drive to the Doone Valley, Dunster Castle, Lynton and Lynmouth, Tarr Steps etc etc. We'll be back soon!
Excellent location for exploring Exmoor and North Devon - and a stunning setting.
Most pitches are sloping but not all. If you're very particular then check when booking.
We were there on a busy bank holiday and we felt a little hemmed in as the pitches aren't marked so some tents seem to take more room than others but it's a very social site. Lots of families gather down by the stables - I would guess that every child on site has to have a pony ride at some stage during their stay.
Showers are more than adequate and were kept clean.
Shop is small and stocks some essential camping bits and pieces.
It is a short distance to Porlock either by foot or car and plenty of good places to eat and drink in the area. Do visit Porlock Weir and nearby Bossington village, owned by the National Trust.
Lovely setting. Great atmosphere. Owners friendly and on hand. Facilities very well kept. Sleeping on a slope is an experience. Kids were kept busy by other kids on the site. Lovely for them to play in the stream. Proper old fashioned kid fun. Our kids enjoyed the pony rides and then seeing the ponies they rode in the field next to the site in the evening. Morris dancers visited one evening which was good fun.
Only feedback would be that another soap dispenser in the ladies would have been handy.
Having been to other site after this I realised how spoilt we were at Burrowhayes. Would definitely recommend to others.
Well! What can I say about Burrowhayes! Except lovely, lovely, lovely ! This has to be one of the most picturesque sites we have ever stayed at. The area is beautiful and right on Exmoor! The stables within the site just about finishes the whole thing off!. The stream that runs alongside is spot on for children to play in. I cannot fault this site at all !. Good warm welcome, good shop and excellent facilities. Lovely to see the ponies out in the field at the end of the day and listening to the children telling each other which one they had ridden that day. Nice tearoom just up the lane and the lovely village of Porlock just a short drive or walk away, Porlock Weir lovely too, with pubs and a few little shops to stroll round. We had a hardstanding with full facilities, but did notice that the middle tent section did get really full, this site is really popular so no surprise ! Would I recommend this site, already have ! Would I return to this site ? Already am, have booked again for this May.
This award winning Adults Only campsite has a working 17th century watermill in a peaceful wooded valley within the Exmoor National Park. Grass and hardstanding pitches, all set beside the River Exe or the sparkling mill stream, with electric, water, drainage, and TV hook-ups. A leisurely stroll up to a weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.
Facilities include the beautiful dog walk, free wifi, fishing, modern toilet and shower block, dog wash, working watermill (tours on most Sunday mornings), salmon pass on the weir, shop, bus service, and excellent pubs in the locality. The site has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading directly to the Exmoor woodlands and rivers. Find out more here
We have just spent a week in this lovely friendly site in a great location.
About a mile from the coast, and a 20 minute walk to Porlock along the edge of the woods, although beware of a fairly steep hill to come back to the site again. Dunkery & Horner Wood runs alongside the top end of the camping area, giving great walks straight from site.
We were made to feel very welcome, and it was reassuring to see Julian frequently walking around checking everything was OK. Well stocked shop with local meats and other food, camping essentials, maps, games, etc. Facilities block very clean, plenty of hot water and good arrangement in showers for keeping your clothes dry.
Nearby Porlock is a lovely little town, boasting several places to eat and drink, although we didn't have the opportunity to try them. Also a couple of grocery shops and a nice assortment of independent stores. Liked the smartphone app' for Porlock that allows you to discover local businesses and walks. Minehead a 10 minute drive for larger Supermarkets.
A great base for exploring Exmoor, we visited Watersmeet, Tarr Steps, Lynton & Lynmouth, and generally toured the area along the lovely narrow lanes that characterise this part of the country.
The only slight drawback was that some pitches, including ours, had a slope to them, giving rise to the usual problems of trying to use beds, tables and cooking equipment when not level.
Despite this slight drawback, a great site that we will be happy to visit again, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others.
We just enjoyed a fantastic weeks break at Burrowhayes. It rained all day on the day of our arrival and pitching was a bit of a nightmare, yet we were provided with duck boards really quickly to help keep the ground from becoming too muddy!
There are lots of walks from the site and dogs are welcome on the site so it's perfect really.
The shop is well stocked and the toilet block is clean and tidy. The showers did fluctuate in pressure depending on how many were in use, but that's pretty usual from my experience. Otherwise water was hot and plentiful! The large sink come baby bath cubicle in the ladies was a helpful addition for my shower hating 2 yr old.
The children had an amazing time, lots of things to do on site and as it was half term, they soon made lots of friends of similar ages. There were lots of children on bikes around the site, but the owners ask that they don't be used after 8pm which seems like a good idea.
The site is pretty sloped, especially for those on the tent field. If you have a camper or caravan most of those pitches are more level.
Wifi is available free, but if you are at the bottom end of the site don't expect a signal!
We spent our honeymoon camped at this lovely site. We were given free choice over where to pitch our trailer tent, which since we were one of only two tents on site meant we could pitch on the plateau of the sloping tent area. We suspect during peak season this may prove more of a challenge.
The facilities are well thought out and spotless. The toilet/laundry block and all the amenities points are surrounded by block paving so the ground does not become slush under heavy rain and footfall. There are notices in the washrooms requesting campers to remove muddy footwear, and dry mops are provided so that campers can be responsible for helping to keep them a pleasant environment. There are plenty of toilets and showers and two cubicled wash basins.
This site is a few minutes drive from Minehead in a lovely peaceful location. There are plenty of footpaths leading from the site for good walks (and fantastic views if you don't mind a climb!).
Approach is down a country lane, past old cottages, 2 bridges and a lovely stream.
We were warmly welcomed by the owner and shown to our pitch, where he helped us pitch up, too. This action was repeated for every visitor - truly personal service and very much appreciated.
The site is mainly grass, slightly sloping, with some fully serviced pitches, and also some statics. It is set in a valley surrounded by woods and a stream, very picturesque and peaceful, with lots of walks onto Exmoor.
Facilities include a shop/reception, with maps of the area, toys, basic foods, etc; an old toilet block, which is kept spotless, and a facilities block with brilliant showers, privacy cubicles and toilets. Bearing in mind there are only 5 showers, never once did I wait for a shower in the whole of a 9 night stay. There is also a well thought out indoor pot wash and laundry.
There are few rules on site, such as quiet after 10. 30pm, no bikes or scooters after 8pm (very necessary), and no bikes/scooters round the loo blocks (although this could do with a little reinforcing as I nearly got flattened on a couple of occasions!).
Also on site is a stable yard, where you can book a ride out, which my daughter very much enjoyed. The horses are beautifully cared for, and live on the field above the site.
The stream is the main source of children's entertainment, and we spent many happy hours paddling, and indeed swimming in the deeper parts. It's very clear and safe, and SO pretty.
Close by are the Horner Tea Rooms which look lovely but we didn't try - next time! You can walk into Porlock over the hill at the back of the site, or drive down to Porlock Weir which is about 2 miles away, and both have quaint chocolate box images, butchers shops etc - both worth an extended visit. A little further away is Minehead - a little gem of a town with steam railway, pleasant beach etc. We also visited Dunster Castle and Dunster Show. Theres absolutely loads to do in the area.
Only one thing this site needs - more open play space for kids to kick a ball, hand around etc, without disturbing tents/vans.
This site is without doubt one of the finest I've ever stayed at: peaceful but lively; friendly; utterly beautiful.
Would we return? yes - we're going back at the end of August!
Yes, the tent pitches are slightly sloping but in no way would that put me off visiting again. No children's play area (that I noticed, but I was not looking) but a great shallow river running through the site was a great place for kids to play. No dog exercise area but a gate at the top of the site goes straight into Horner Woods - even better, and the river to swim in.
Facilities were brilliant, always clean, never had to Q, large spacious shower cubicles with separate changing area with plenty of hooks. Hairdryers if required for 20p a go.
Well stocked shop.
Staff were lovely, they could not do enough for you, from helping you choose the correct pitch to fitting in around you when you request to extend your stay on a weekend they are fully booked!
Porlock is within walking distance through the woods, Minehead is about 8/10 miles away and has both a Morrisons and Tesco.
Out and about - I camp alone with a dog so my main activity is walking - there are numerous walks direct from the site so no reason to use your car if you don't want to, but also the whole of Exmoor at your disposal if you travel in any direction for a short distance.
I cant fault the site - oh yes, as it was so hot this week it would have been great if they had sold ice cubes for my drinks! Apart from that - perfect and I cant wait to visit again.

Well kept site, they see you in to your pitch. In busy times, some pitches are close, can be noisy (children playing) when children are off school. Dogs are welcome, and it is a very popular site for dog owners, as there is lots of choice for walking directly out of site. Cream teas available nearby (walking distance). If you are fit, can walk into Porlock, it has a choice of pubs, we preferred the one up the top of Porlock (think it was the ship). Lovely time had here, but not a site for someone wanting tranquillity, as very popular. But Good for walkers, and you can get away for tranquillity by sitting at Porlock beach.
Excellent site albeit a little sloping. Showers and toilets are very clean. The owner and his staff are friendly and helpful and the on site shop has a good stock. Great site if you like walking just go out the gate at the back of the site and your on Exmoor! There's two tea rooms within a 5 min walk, you can also hire ponies and horses on site. There is no playground for children but most amuse themselves playing in the stream which runs by the site. Minehead is about 7 miles away and has great Indian and Chinese takeaways and a tesco and morrisons. Porlock is about 1-2 miles away and has an excellent butchers and some good pubs. I can honestly say this is the best all round site we have ever stayed at and will be returning next year!
Our first stay here, and what a great site it proved to be. We were the only tent (it was cold weather), although there were quite a few caravan tourers and campervans. The modern toilet/shower facilities are excellent - heated rooms, very hot showers, and all very clean and well kept. The shop is open all day, and the owner/staff are very friendly and helpful. A very quiet site, well away from the main A39 road. No noise at all. I'd give the site 9/10 - it loses 1 point for the slight slope on the tent pitches (caravan pitches are OK). But a terrific place to stay.
The walks in this area are superb, and you can do Dunkerry Beacon from the site. National Trust tea-room just a few minutes walk away which is where many walkers start from.
Can thoroughly recommend the Ship Inn in Porlock, and the other Ship Inn at Porlock Weir (confusing isn't it) The food at both is excellent and good value. Kitnors tea-room at Bossington (opposite National Trust car park) has an impossibly pretty garden, and does great cream teas.
An absolute delight to come upon this wonderful and fully equipped campsite. Turned up on a very busy Sat evening at 7pm. Julian was extremely helpful and found us a site straight away and helped us out with an extended hook up lead when ours wasn't long enough. The showers were hot and everlasting, the toilets clean and a joy to use! Tariffs are very reasonable and good value, no charges for dogs which is generous. We will definitely be back. Many thanks for your hospitality.
Have just returned from a weeks stay at this site, WOW!.
My Wife stayed there back in '82, so it was my first visit, and I loved it, so peaceful, incredible.
The toilet block is kept immaculately clean, as is the rest of the site, and considering there was a mass booking of mountain bikers for a weekend event the place was spotless. The tent pitches are all sloping to some degree, but not too bad. It is quite a large site with beautiful walks over the fence and into the trees beyond. Pollock itself is close but involves either the busy A39 or a 1:4 hill but still walk able, I recommend the the royal oak pub.
Julian and his team do a fantastic job on the site and are very friendly. The shop is smallish but adequate for our needs.
I am definitely going back!
