The impression we got from actually staying on this site was not at all the same as that given by the reviews here. Even on the weekend after the bank holiday it was crowded and noisy with no sense of privacy; heaving with children, especially little ones, although there was no play area or facilities for them; likewise lots of dogs, with no apparent exercise area for them either. The sloping tent field made cooking and sleeping a bit awkward; caravans both touring and static were on the flat. New toilet block with ample showers and laundry facilities is very nice. But we would not go back here with other sites in the area to choose from.

We went here for the Bank Holiday weekend and we were delighted by what we found.
Julian the owner showed us to our pitch and was very friendly.
The pitches are of a good size with plenty of room for the caravan, awning, windbreak and car.
Some of the pitches are rather sloping though.
The valley in which the site is set is a real gem of a location and there is a small river running beside the site which is smashing for a quick paddle.
The Ablutions are first class and kept immaculately clean, in fact I think they are the best we have seen.
The site has an adjoining stables although we did not use it the horses looked well cared for and people seemed to be enjoying the rides.
The Porlock area is a real step back in time and is quite exquisite although a bit on the quiet side.
To sum up the site is great, the area beautiful and the prices reasonable. WE WILL BE BACK.

We have just got back from a fantastic fortnight at this lovely site.  It really is in the heart of beautful Exmoor, and is very well run by a very helpful and visible Julian, who was always on hand when needed.

As someone else has said, the tent pitches are mostly sloping, and significantly so in some places, but we soon got used to it!

The stables are great for the kids, and our normally shy 11 year old spent every waking hour she could at the stables helping to groom, feed and water the ponies - and has declared it was the best holiday she has ever been on!

The excellent facilities are only 3 years old, and are always clean and well stocked!  Locally we found The Ship Inn in Porlock great for breakfast, Sunday lunch and evening meals, and you have got to go on an Exmoor Safari with Discovery Safaris, who are based in the pet shop in the village, but also have a website.  Beaches - Minehead is beautiful sand, but we preferred Dunster beach as it wasn't as busy.  Do try walking from the site - Horner Woods are beautiful and a walk up Ley Hill gives fantastic views.

We'll definitely be going back :-)

We enjoyed a lovely 10 days here at the beginning of July.  It's a great site, clean, quiet and with absolutely first class facilities including a well-stocked shop.   Owners and staff are friendly and helpful.    Even when very busy there was no problem with noise or with queuing for showers.
Both the location and setting are very good, with easy access to Exmoor's attractions, especially Porlock with its good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants only a pleasant (though steep) walk away. Several walks are available directly from the site.   Lovely herd of horses in adjacent field added to the charm.
Slight downside with the gently sloping lie of the land, but it does give the campers a very pleasant outlook over the campsite and lovely mature trees all around.
Will definitely return.

Fantastic camping/caravan site located in a lovely part of the world. Very modern and clean toilet and shower block. Shop well stocked with reasonable prices.

The only thing I would say, is take your non slip matting for your tables as this site is very sloping, and it can be a bit of a pain when things keep falling off!

Hi went to Burrowhayes site and this is the second year running I have been there, for a site where really there is nothing except the horse riding I can only say its fabulous.
The owners are great, Julian helped set us up and due to the awful weather provided (to all the caravaners) raised wooden boards to walk on. We were told to pay the next day and "just to get settled in".
The shop is small but adequate, the scenery is fab, the toilet / washing up factilities are brilliant! I have stayed at top sites including the well renowned "Troutbeck head" and I can say Burrowhayes facitlities are second to none. The shower cubicles have a shower curtain to protect clothes etc, they also have metal holders for your shampoos etc, there are loads of hooks for hanging stuff, there are also hair dryers and in the ladies a large deep sink which is for babies. The showers are NOT the dreaded push button type NOR do you have to pay!
The dog walking is really good, through a gate and your inb Exmoor forrest The horse riding is great as well and very much in budget and this is one site where families are really welcome, kids and adults (mums dads and grandparents) played badminton in the grassed area which is overlooked by all the caravans, no one minded, everyone who stayed seemed to be friendly and most of them I heard call the owners by name, people keep coming back to this site.
There are no play ground facilities but my kids aged 3yrs, 14yrs and 16yrs did not have a problem, we could do the mile and half walk into porlock which was a gorgeous. We drove into Minehad (5miles) took a ride ont he steam train into Watchet for their carnival, (minehead is a nice little town with ?Butlins) Also in MInehead is the swimming pool and tescos and some interesting little shops (home brewers??).
Close by is Dunster Castle, we also paid a visit to Glastonbury which took over an hour - its only 45miles but the roads are winding, close by to Glastonbury is the Clarks Village, a shoppping outlet place (bought the kids school shoes) and loads of clothes I'm sure I dont need!

I love this site and can throughly recommend it

Just spent another weekend at this lovely site.  It is still the favourite with the whole family.
The toilet block and pot wash etc, Is very new and kept clean and tidy by owners and campers alike.  The shop is always well stocked with local cakes and produce.  The site is safe for children with lots of interesting things to see.  The site is a working riding stables so there are always horses being moved from the surrounding fields to the stable and being taken out for rides. Very central for Minehead, Porlock and Lymouth. Only one very slight down side is that there are not very many flat pitches.

I've been a regular visitor to Burrowhayes since I was a child (am now ahem 40) and now take my own children there. Yes, the slope is a bit annoying but it is a small price to pay for an otherwise faultless site. The facilities are fantastic with unlimited hot water, plenty of showers and toilets so very little queuing and spotlessly clean. The pot-wash with it's big deep sinks is much appreciated and the laundry is well-equipped. The shop is well-stocked and the staff friendly and helpful. The stables are well run and the horses and tack in good condition. In fact, for the information of a previous reviewer, I rode Dick last week (may half-term) so he is still going strong!

The walking and riding around Burrowhayes  is gorgeous with access straight into the woods and from there up on to the moors, it really is a slice of Heaven, even in the rain!

There are plenty of interesting places to visit such as Dunster with its castle and Lynmouth with its stories of the flood disaster. Tropiquaria is recommended for a day out with children as is a ride on the steam railway at Minehead.

If you like to eat out, my children love the Hairy Dog in Minehead because it has the most amazing play area and we have found the food and service there to be excellent. A more local recommendation from me would be the Royal Oak in Porlock which has a family seating area inside and serves lovely food reasonably priced.

This was our first experience of camping and we thoroughly enjoyed it, the great site went a long way towards that enjoyable first experience. The shower/toilet block was very good - good facilities, very clean. The setting of the site is lovely - views up to Exmoor from our tent, sound of running water (a small river/brook I hasten to add) runs alongside the site (the kids paddled in it). Riding stables on site and a short walk down the lane into a small hamlet there are cottage tearooms selling light lunches etc. - all very peaceful and relaxing. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site to anyone.

What a fantastic site. We rang up the night before and got fitted in with electric hook up. We were on a slight hill but this was due to not booking earlier! There is a fantastic shower block with laundry and pot wash facilities as well. Julian the owner was fantastic helping us feak and weeble females! To pull the trailer up the hill and then back round when it was time to go. Thanks Julian xx. Loads to do here, horse riding facilities if you want it, seemed extremely popular while we were there.Fab base to explore surrounding area, Dunster fab, Lynmouth FAB, Minehead okay. Tesco at Minehead plus loads of chippies. Watch out for dodgy chippy in Porlock, we witnessed people returning horrible food and having their money refunded by dirty looking people cooking and serving, so went elsewhere! Try this amazing site you wont be dissapointed

We have been visiting this site for years and it certainly ranks highly amongst our favourites.

The location is idyllic, the new toilet block is superb (the best we have encountered), and Julian and Marion and staff are so friendly and helpful they make sure your stay is a pleasant one.  Even when full the site remains as peaceful as can be expected.

The walking in the surrounding area is abundant.  A pleasant stroll takes you into Porlock where a  selection of quaint shops, restaurants and pubs can be found.

I hadn't realised just how superb this site is until I visited others. We have been using this as our base for Exmoor for a couple of years now.
The toilet block and showers are excellent and the site well kept.
Ideally placed for Exmoor and the coast. A true gem of a camp site.

A beautiful site in rolling green countryside- very peaceful.  New toilet & shower block  built 2 years ago & still looks brand new.  Plenty of continuous hot water. All spotlessly clean.

Very quiet during the night & staff very friendly.
Definitely recommend this lovely place.
