Had a great time even though the weather was a bit on the wet side, we had duckboards delivered to our caravan to help and the site owner was very helpful. Showers were very clean as was the laundry facilities. Shop on site was very good and well stocked with all essentials. The pitch was 1st rate and the site was very clean and tidy. Minehead 20 mins drive porlock 3 minutes away with lots of shops. We will be returning next year, as we enjoyed our stay.

Spotted this site on the internet, it had good reviews so we thought we’d give it a go. The welcome from all of the staff was warm, friendly, and most helpful. As I clambered out of the car after a five and a half hour drive I was slightly taken aback by the look of the camping ground which seemed to be on a very steep slope, however when escorted to our pitch by the site owner we found a relatively level area at the top of the hill away from all the hubbub of the family / kiddie campers. I guess finding a level pitch anywhere inland on Exmoor would be akin to winning the lottery.

The WC’s and shower blocks are first rate, clean, modern and free of charge, considering the numbers on the site during July, the staff must have worked very hard throughout the day to keep everything so spotlessly clean. Although the site was busy we never once had to queue for a shower, and the water was always hot no matter what time of day.

There is a small but well stocked site shop, so you are always guaranteed the essentials. Unlike so many on site shops the prices are reasonable, on a par with most village shops, but you are only a 5 minute drive from Porlock and there is a small supermarket there for anything slightly more out of the ordinary. (Don’t make the mistake of cycling to Porlock, there’s one hell of a hill on the way back)

There are a number of good pubs in the local area, most offer food too, however the “bottom” Ship at Porlock weir, or the “top” Ship in Porlock Village are a must. Both have excellent menus and wonderful local ales.

Overall a fabulous site in a wonderful setting, we will be going back.

This was our second year staying on this site! We love it there, it is on a serious slope. Which makes coming home and sleeping in a flat bed seem strange! Its nothing that cant be dealt with.

The facilities are of a high standard and kept really clean and tidy. Shop is really handy, we wouldn't have survived this summer without the laundry either.

Julian, the owner, is great, really friendly and helpful. Runs a very relaxed site.

There is a lot to do, we still haven't done it all! REALLY recommend the Porlock safari with Richard. He is a mine of information about the moors and the local history and characters. He knows where to find the red deer, no matter what the weather! There are great beaches nearby and plenty of good places to eat. A walk along the sea front at blue anchor watching the sunset is another favourite of ours. This area beats Spain! No matter what the weather!

Great campsite with friendly and helpful owners.

Well thought out and clean toilet block (no money required for the showers and plenty of hooks). Well stocked shop. Good rural location with a site that strikes a good balance between being a formal campsite, but also being in the country.

The riding stables are also part of the farm/campsite and our children loved the horse ride.

Good location and convenient for getting fish and chips from Porlock.

Overall a great place to stay and thoroughly recommended.

Lovely quiet site in a beautiful position. Good shop, pretty stream, pony trekking and beautiful horner wood close by, a dog walkers paradise. Close to Porlock and minehead via the coastal walk from selworthy. I have visited this site about 8 times over the last 10 years. Best spot for caravan is by the stream at the front of the site, tents have a slightly sloping field. Hope this review helps.

Cheddar Mendip Heights Club Site

Set in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Mendip Hills. There are 90 grass and hardstanding pitches some with hookup, for tents, caravans and motorhomes. The well laid out site has excellent shower and toilet facilities, including a family room, plus a laundry room and a well-stocked licensed shop selling local produce. Non members are welcome to book!

You can walk to the village of Priddy where you`ll find a popular pub serving food and the Priddy Good Farm Shop, selling a range of locally produced food. There are many attractions in this area of Somerset and the south west including Bath and Weston-super-Mare, and the site is ideally located, midway between Cheddar Gorge and Wells.  Third visit. Excellent campsite wash facilities. Kept really clean. Site shop is well stocked and even took our order for daily newspaper. Staff always very helpful.A cheery good morning from the stable girls too!

Had an electric hook-up pitch, which slightly sloped, but nothing to worry about.

Dog friendly site, with well behaved dogs/owners. It's a pity there isn't a field where the dogs could be let off the lead. Although there is the footpath just off site.

Walked into Porlock, but forgot I was another year older and the return trip was up hill. Porlock town has two grocery shops if you're stuck for food. There is a Tesco's at Minehead too.

Nice Tea garden at Horner, a short walk up the road, with varied menu. Recommend the cream tea.

Minehead, Dunster & Blue Anchor close by.

Will be looking forward to my fourth visit.

This is a great quiet little site next to a lovely flowing stream that offers all the facilities needed and is ideally located for walkers.

The site itself is divided into different areas. As you enter there is an flat area for campers and caravans with electric hookup facilities. Then there are a number of static caravans available, then another flat sections offering electric hookups. Sadly the area offered for tents is situated on the slight incline. This was the only downside of the site I can see.

Facilities were excellent. A new shower/toilet block was erected in 2004, and it is kept very clean. Good number of shower and toilet cubicles available to avoid any waiting. Showers were hot and toilets have good quality toilet roll!

Pot wash room with another good number of sinks, also a lower sink for any wheelchair users / getting smaller children to help! Next door to this is a disabled toilet and shower and then a laundry room offering washing machines and driers.

Locations is great for walkers, offering numerous different route variations. Get the map out and have a look!

Porlock is a short walk away as well as Minehead, with it's Tesco, being a 10 minutes drive. Dunster and Dunster Castle is 20 minutes by car, great for all you National Trust members.

There is a stable block next door and horses are available for those keen to ride, great if your kids are into this.

Overall a great site that I will visit again

Just enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing week at this wonderful site

Julian was most attentive in helping us choose a pitch when we arrived.

The site is sited beside a lovely river (ideal for the kids to play in during the warmer weather) and there are plenty of hook ups available, some of the pitches near to the statics also have tv points.

What about the facilities, well have never seen such a large block (new in 2004)and kept spotlessly clean.

More than adequate amounts of toilets and showers, a couple of large enclosed sink units just right for either washing clothes or bathing the baby!

A large internal pot wash as well as a washing room with the biggest tumble driers you are likely to need.

The shop was just in the process of being stocked for the season but appears to going to have plenty of lines and they also carry a good selection of camping bits and pieces as well as a selection of walking books.

There are plenty of good wealks in the area, some starting from the site. The walk into Porlock is only 20 minutes or so but is uphill on the return. Porlock has a good selection of pubs and eateries (the Ship Inn has loads of character, exccellent real ales and a good menu as well) but if you want a 'special' meal you won't beat Reeves in Dunster.

All in all couldn't fault it.

This campsite has a beautiful location on the northeast side of the National Park, at the foot of the moorland hills with surrounding scenery that makes you stand and look.

The staff were friendly and very helpful (even to the point of helping out setting up the tent in windy conditions) and will show you to a choice of pitches depending on whether you prefer shade, full sun, wind shelter or whatever else.

The campsite also runs pony trekking tours catering for various levels of experience which seem quite popular. Although we didn't opt for that ourselves.

It's a sloping site, which affords superb views but there's plenty of level / near level pitches.

The facilities are very adequate for the size of the site and where kept clean and tidy.

Nearby you have the moorland to explore, the NT village of Selworthy as well as Porlock and Porlock Weir, Dunster and Minehead with the steam railway and more.

One tip though, the horses in an adjacent field can attract midges on that far edge of the campsite but aren't a problem if you just pitch a few metres from the fence.

I absolutely love this site, I have stayed at some very good sites the last few years but I would say this is my favourite due to it being fantastic all round.

We didn't book but were fully accommodated for with a hook up pitch, and were allowed to choose our own pitch and put the tent up before paying which I thought was excellent.

The facilities aren't as good as some of the others I've seen but do the job and were always very clean and the showers are heat adjustable so can be as hot as you wish.

The site itself is beautiful, and the stables and farmhouse give it a lot of character and at night when the horses go in to the field it is lovely and comforting to hear them galloping around and making noises. Being September time when kids are back in school it was also very peaceful and it was lovely to sit outside with a warm drink as the sun was setting watching all the birds.

We couldn't resist having a horse riding lesson and thoroughly enjoyed it so booked a second the day after. We were taken on a different route each day which allowed us to see the Exmoor countryside around the campsite and lovely views. The girl who took the lessons, Zara was very nice and knew her stuff. I rode Wendy one day then Millie the next, both lovely and well behaved if not a little slow. My partner rode strapping Ronan the baby at only 6 but brilliant.

The shop was excellent and I thought very cheap, with things like butter being cheaper than at the local tesco in Minehead. It is also a good location for exploring Exmoor and is very close to the famous villages of Bossington and Selworthy full of quaint thatched roof cottages and lovely tea rooms in which we had a number of cream teas with clotted cream!

Finally Julian and the rest of the staff were all very nice and welcoming and I have already decided I will be revisiting Burrowhayes again next year.

Grass and hardstanding pitches, all set beside the River Exe or the sparkling mill stream, with electric, water, drainage, and TV hook-ups. A leisurely stroll up to a weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.

Facilities include the beautiful dog walk, free wifi, fishing, modern toilet and shower block, dog wash, working watermill (tours on most Sunday mornings), salmon pass on the weir, shop, bus service, and excellent pubs in the locality. The site has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading directly to the Exmoor woodlands and rivers. Find out more here

If you love horses, wonderful countryside, a great local pub and tearoom, spotless facilities and brilliant hosts look no further than Burrowhayes.
This was our second visit - our third is already booked for October!and once again we were not disappointed. The stream running alongside is a great plus with children, my son and dog spent many happy times paddling in and out of it - even in the rain! I agree that Dick is the main man! BUT if you want a fun ride Archie is the guy! For food The Ship is good but also try the Royal Oak - very friendly staff and well behaved dogs are allowed and if their lucky get fed doggie chews - well ours did anyway, both are just a mile walk away in Porlock. In my opinion this site cannot be faulted! And I look forward to many more holidays there.

Not sure I want to tell too many people about this little gem.

The location is breathtaking and the stone bridge on the way in really sets the scene. It is so nice to find somewhere that children can play without the usual computer generated toys of the world we live in. My two kids 7 and 12 played frisbee, ball etc on the green in front of the static caravans of only 20. Our caravan was spotless and I am very fussy.

Julian seemed to be well known by all the regulars and was extremely welcoming. The shop on site sold all the usual essentials and even sold cakes from the local tea room in Horner - a nice touch - keep it local etc.

Although we had wonderful facilities in our van, just checked out the shower and toilet block and was amazed at how clean it was. There were a few in the static vans that used to walk over with towels just to use them. Can't say better than that can you?

At the back of camping field there is a gate with a great walk through the woods and down a very steep, but great fun, hill to the village of Porlock. Did it every night with kids, dog and torches to the Ship Inn. Great food, small play area and good ale.

Kids were amazed at the 'bat watch' we did on the way home through the woods. Watching my kids faces as they played in the stream will stay with me forever.

Horses are great and we rode most days. Dick seems quite famous, but can fully recommend Archie and Indie for a great ride. My 12 year old wanted to take her trusty steed Millie home.

The camping field overlooks the grazing horses and at times I felt quite envious of the tent inhabitants around their little lights! We have re-booked next year. For great walks, getting to know your kids again, smelling the fresh air all around and riding 10/10.

Please Note: Bright Lights, Arcades, Bingo, Childrens Organiser not here. Thank Goodness!

We spent 1 night at this site, great shop and at the time brand new toilet / shower block.

Found the site noisy, but once children went to bed, peace and quite.

Close to Exmoor, Porlock and Minehead. Some pitches on a slope which could be a problem for some.

I have no problem recommending this site. Final note owners / staff friendly and helpful.

I chose to visit this campsite on the strength of the reviews that have been left on this website. Well all I can say is that myself and the family were not dissapointed.

On entering the site I encountered julian the owner who was wandering around the reception building. After a short conversation he asked us to follow him as he had a choice of pitches for us to see. Once we chose the one we wanted, he ensured that we were left happy. He even told us to leave booking in until we had got ourselves sorted. I have never encountered such a helpful site owner in all the years I have stayed at campsites.

As for facillities well what can I say? 10/10 all round. (especially shower & toilet block)

Great site for walkers, with or without dogs.

The countryside is breathtaking and the local people so friendly and helpful.

If you want a quiet, well maintained site with great walks and beautiful countryside,a place to relax and unwind then I would thoroughly recomend this campsite. Nearly forgot to mention the stables which are very popular and my 12 year old daughter enjoyed 2 pre-booked rides, which made the holiday for her.

This was our first outing as campers, so we packed my escort with the tent and all the gear (think I will need a bigger car soon), and set off for Burrowhayse. We knew that it was off the main road and thought may have problems finding it. But the directions given were good and it was well sign posted.

We got there and went to the reception expecting to have to do paper work and pay the remaining fees. The lady behind the counter said no, we can do that later when we are ready and all set up. It was such a relaxed approach that we started relaxing straight away. She then showed us to our pitch, and to our amazement she walked out side, turned right and pointed to the tent field and said we could pitch anywhere we liked. We were expecting to be ushered to a pre chosen pitch and that we would have no say in the matter. As has already been stated the tent field is on a slope and in places steepish but as they let us pitch anywhere we could pick the flattest spot. We did not need electric hook up but noticed that had we wanted it then we would of been put behind the shop though more level no there were views.

We had practised putting up the tent before we went so we had half an idea what we were doing. The stony ground did take its revenge on quite a few of our tent pegs, as new comers we didn’t have that many spares. Lesson learnt though more pegs and stronger.

The new shower block was fantastic with free showers, washing up and all spotlessly clean the site was very peaceful and quiet. All you hear at night is rustling of leaves and the stream making its way past the caravan pitches on the lower level.

Although we didn't go riding, there were those who did and they said they enjoyed it and is an excellent way to see the local countryside, which is breathtaking. Porlock is about a mile away and Minehead is five miles. The camp shop had the basics and not to badly priced but as the 'big shops' were near by it was no hardship to get shopping.

If this is typical of camp sights then we made the correct chose in going camping for our holidays. In a nutshell, Burrowhayes is peaceful, clean, well managed and set in an idyllic location. We will be returning soon.
