Three nights immediately following the last weekend before nearly all children returned to state schools - what would we find? Had the site been looking a bit 'tired' after the busy-ness, it would have been understandable. But instead we found the wash block facilities to be absolutely spotless. They're well designed, too. And the showers are included in the overnight charge.

Maybe half the site is level or terraced, and pitch areas without EHU are either on a large central sloping area or up towards the top of the site near the woods. Finding a level non-EHU pitch is difficult! Even with lots of choice the best we could find meant that one of us slept on a slight slope sufficient to promote rolling sideways out of bed. Balance when standing in the tent can be a problem, too, so if this is important for you then maybe you have to pass on this site if you're a tent user.

The location is fantastic and the staff friendly. Lots of duckboards had been made available for some of the wetter periods this Summer has brought - a real sign of professionalism. Free WiFi to allow smartphone users to check the weather forecast and availability (or otherwise) of things like the 'Waverley' day trip to Lundy (cancelled at the very last minute the week we were there).

Several walk options directly from the site, picture-postcard villages nearby (don't miss the cream teas), a well-stocked shop, helpful staff - just about perfect. Only a half-mile from the A39, but bear in mind that in many parts of UK the A39 would be classified as a B road so plan your journey with that in mind.

We have just returned from our second stay at this site. We enjoyed it so much the first time that we booked up straight away for 2 weeks later.

With two young children and a dog this site was perfect for us. The size of the camp was just right for the children to feel they had some freedom playing on their bikes, scooters and the tree swings which were randomly placed around the site. We were pleased that there wasn’t a specific play area.

The horse riding is a bonus and the children enjoyed going out for their rides.

There is so much to do and see in the area, but the forest walks and streams just from the site are amazing and fabulous for walks.

The on-site facilities are also good, with spacious and clean pot wash and laundry rooms. The toilet and shower blocks are kept very clean and tidy, with regular cleaning taking place. I didn’t have to queue once during either stay and this was in high season.

There are plenty of water taps around the camp, even at the top of the hill where we were and plenty of bin areas too with recycling facilities.

There is a good shop and the staff are all very friendly.

We love the fact that the site feels very relaxed with its rules, but it all works!

The pitches are not that level and the mud is very red when it rains, but its a Fantastic site I'd stay again, with hot showers the cleanest toilet block I have seen! The shop stocks stuff you might actually want to buy and the owners and staff have time for all your questions and the answers to most of them.

The walking in the area is supperb you walk to Porlock and from there to Salt marshes turn left for Porlock Weir a little harbour village and right for Bossington an Hurstone Point

There are two pubs in the local village about a mile away both do food all day.

Our first time at this site, we had been recommended by neighbours, on arrival we noticed a large sign warning of very soft ground, considering all the rain we have had this was not surprising. The site for caravans was flat, tents were on a slope and on our visit on the last week of school holidays was full. The entrance to the site is wonderful with a small stream running down the side of the site and dry stone walls and bridges over, the children from the site were happily playing in the stream.

We received a very warm reception from the owners and were personally taken to our pitch (something that rarely happens these days) which was not as wet as we had expected, after being shown where all the facilities were, bins, water, recycling etc we were told about the 'duck boards' to help if conditions got wetter, I don't know if this was good forethought by the owners or the site regularly gets wet but within an hour we had pitched up, had our canopy out and a lovely hard wood decking area outside the van.

The facilities were great toilet block was always very clean and plenty of hot water, the pot wash was inside and again very clean, there was a laundry however we never used it. There is a small shop which was well stocked with all you needed and we had the opportunity to order fresh croissants each morning, prices were a little dear but not that you felt ripped off.

There is a riding stables next to the site which was well attended from the site, with pony trekking and longer rides available.

The area around porlock is wonderful with some great walks, Exmoor national park, the doone valley, bossington and lynton and lynmouth all worth visiting. We found porlock weir great with an evening pint of Somerset cider outside the ship inn watching the sunset over the sea. This was our first trip to this site and despite the soft ground we will be back soon.

Just returned from our third short visit this year.

Absolutely love this site, its quiet peaceful and staff so welcoming especially Julian the owner(always has a cuppa in his hand) nothing is too much trouble for staff at Burrowhayes.

Great for couples, dog owners and families especially young families as there aren't any of the usual campsite rules i. E no scooters, bikes, ball games etc. Which lets face it children of today need encouragement to have just good old fashioned play! it was a pleasure to see kids being kids, even our teenage son thought its great that kids can run around and play.

Dogs too had a fab time with all the woods, streams and lanes to walk.

There is also a shallow river nearby which kids were playing in and building dams with their parents ( haven't seen that for years!) fabulous

Facilities are the cleanest I have seen, showers have useful wire shelving to hang your shampoo etc. Shop adequate for your needs and lots of places to visit nearby, best if you are National Trust members as you are in the Holnicote Estate which is a beautiful place to explore.

Can see why campers have been returning for years here, we will most definitely be

We spent two nights on this fab campsite. The facilities were spotless. Make sure you have 20p peices for hairdyrers ladies (if you have no hook up) Well stocked shop for anything you have forgotten and the staff were lovely. We were group of three tents an the owner made sure we had plenty of space. Very helpful. Only downside for us was we were on a slope. For two nights it was ok but if it had been a week I think we would have found it hard work. Overall. It was lovely site and we would recommend to all

We stayed for 4 nights, very nice popular campsite,

Toilets & showers & pan cleaning room etc are very clean & tidy, set in a picturesque spot with a small river/stream that the kids can paddle in (though it's very cold!).

Pony trekking on site is a nice bonus.

Only criticism is that there is no set area for kids to play in, but there was plenty of room around the tent areas to kick a ball etc.

Access is good, only a short country lane from the main A39.

Have just returned from a lovely stay at Burrowhayes Farm Camping Park. It was truly wonderful, the owners were so helpful and did everything they could to make camping life easy especially as we followed all the flooding that Somerset had experienced.

We were offered a choice of pitch and as previously mentioned, some of the electric hook-up pitches are on a considerable slope but the flat pitches were quite water logged. We were given duck boards to help with the wet conditions which made getting in and out of a wet tent so much easier.

The site itself is near to Porlock village right on the edge of Exmoor National Park. The closest supermarkets were in Minehead only 5 miles drive away but there was a small grocery store in Porlock itself and the campsite also had a little shop selling a few essentials.

Minehead, despite the existence of a very large Butlins centre, is actually lovely with plenty of pubs, restaurants, takeways, etc. I imagine it could get very busy during the school holidays but it was lovely and quiet during our stay.

The station for the West Somerset Steam railway is right behind Morrisons, with picturesque Dunster village and castle a few miles away.

Be warned, as a National Trust property the charges for visiting the castle are high and you are charged extra for parking and for exhibitions within the castle grounds such as the water mill. Lynmouth just within Devon was beautiful but our recommendation for a lovely day out would be Cleeve Abbey which is served by Washford Station on the steam line.

Cleeve Abbey is run by English Heritage, there is a small charge to enter the Abbey ruins but not for the external grounds which is a great place for picnics. For younger tourists Exmoor Zoo was also a great place to visit.

For visiting families Burrowhayes Farm is a dream, with clean and spacious facilities and a pony trekking centre on site. All the ponies were let out in the field behind the tents which was lovely to watch in the evenings.

There are lovely woodland walks leading from the campsite that take you right into Porlock village. There is a fast flowing stream that runs alongside the site over which are two ancient 'Packhorse' bridges so you would have to keep an eye on small children - sound advice on any site really.

It is by far the nicest camp site we have visited. A huge thanks to everyone at Burrowhayes for a lovely stay.

We have just returned from a 9 night stay at this lovely site and would recommend it to anyone! The owners have made a huge effort to level off some of the tenting pitches which has worked really well!

The site was packed with units but still the facilities were spotless and we didn't have to wait for showers etc at all!.

My daughter loved the horse riding from the site and river is fantastic and the children (and husband) loved making dams!

We have a dog and so the ability to walk from the site was fantastic! There are lots of beautiful walks that you can do from a 5 min stroll to Horner to a few hours to Porlock Wier!

We can't wait to come back!

Warm friendly site, although a bit out the way, (about 20 min walk into Porlock). Not so good if poor weather but pleasant stroll to the pub in the summer.

Facilities good / clean and also has a convenient little shop for the essentials and things you forgot.

One downer is there are few flat pitches for tents so get used to sleeping on a slope, (at least you do not have to worry about flooding).

Will be going here again.

We have just returned from a week at this site, with a caravan and two tents and I have to say that it was everything the other reviewers say, and more!

The facilities are second to none, the attention to detail is superb. The owners and staff were very helpful and friendly too.

Yes, the tent area slopes, but we felt it was a small price to pay for such lovely surroundings.

We spoke to several people who had been coming back for years, and we will definitely be going back next year.

I can thoroughly recommend this site. 10 out of 10 !

Have just returned after our 5th visit to burrowhayes. Fantastic staff, very helpful and friendly. Fabulous and clean facilities. Outstanding rural surroundings. Great for families with children, stream, woods and horses.

Has a slight slope but everything else makes up for it, great for kids to scooter down. Will be returning next year as it feels like going home!

The area is full of brilliant things to do, we always have things to do. Porlock weir is a must, best triple-cooked chips ever. Great for crabbing. Horner tea rooms serve the best chutney I have ever had, always come home with jars of it. Fantastic walks from the site. Close to the village of Porlock and town Minehead.

Three great nights at Burrowhayes, and will return soon hopefully. Friendly welcome, well stocked shop, spotless facilities - plenty of hot water.

Great spot for walking up wooded valleys & playing in streams, riding available from the site as there are stables - I didn't ride this time, but have done in the past, lovely ride through the woods up to the moor - great for blowing away the cobwebs. Walk or cycle into Porlock - restaurants, pubs & shops.

A very relaxing stay. I didn't see a play area, but wasn't looking for one as we don't have children, but the woods & stream must be the best playground ever!

Visited last year. Nice small site with shallow river at bottom of site which our kids loved. Small shop, nice clean loos and showers. Access to woods at top of site. Very friendly and helpful staff. Horses next door. Loverly location. Porlock Wier must have the hungriest crabs in the UK, crab line is a must!

Only down side and one that will stop us returning is that most of the tent pitches (and I believe all tent pitches with electric hook-up) are on a considerable slope, to the point that we were nearly rolling out of bed every night. Other than that great site.

First time camping and wasn't sure what to expect but we were not disappointed!we were shown to our pitches which were not marked out but we were given spot behind toilet block so had a private corner with our friends!

However most pitches were on a gentle slope which made sleeping interesting (but only for me - didn't seem to bother my fellow campers!)

Facilities were good and clean - small queues at peak times but that was to be expected!

Shop was small but well equipped and well stocked with sweets which the kids loved! Stream was a big attraction for kids although they kept falling in so take extra clothes!

Horse riding was also good and worth booking in advance!

Would also recommend cream teas at Horner a short walk away with excellent ploughmans!

Has no children's play area but this did not affect the children's enjoyment of the site as more than enough to do and plenty of space to run around in !

Prices seemed very reasonable and would definitely recommend !
