Returned yesterday from 3 night stay where it was a base for me to walk up Watkins path to Snowdon summit.
Couldn't fault it in any way. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings on edge of lake, plenty of pitches, firepits and wood sold on site at £4 a bag, noise policy so quiet after 11 pm, kayak hire at £6 per hour, on site pizza grill in high season, warm showers, freezer room for icepacks.
Got very busy the night before we left with campers pitching tents in the dark so can imagine queuing for showers in the morning.
Overall had thoroughly enjoyable stay, will definitely be returning to tackle another path up Snowdon.
We spent 4 nights on our second visit to this beautifully situated site. It is professionally run by friendly, helpful staff. Stunning views, camp fires and home baked pizzas. The site is very reasonably priced. Prepare for the usual midge problems and it does not get better than this!
Site was very busy for the bank holiday, yet site is very big with several fields, so there was plenty of space for our 3 families.
A nice bonus is that the site allow open campfires on raised frames that are scatted in the fields. Firewood is sold on-site in the evening in a very reasonably price. Additional perk is a wood stove pizza that sell fresh pizza on site
Toilet block was nice and clean through out the whole time.
Just come home now from this beautiful campsite! Absolutely lovely, plenty of flat decent spaces to camp.
On arriving was greeted by a very friendly person who told us that the booking office was closed at the moment but if we wanted to set up we could pay later on. As we entered the camping fields we noticed that there were fire pits aplenty, we bought logs for £4. Will most certainly camp here again, friendly staff, lovely walks. Only criticism is that large group staying at bunkhouse stayed up until after 3am and had really loud music that we could hear the bass from 4 fields away :(. Shame because otherwise perfect time there.
More bins around site would be good as there are only the big bins by reception.
Just got back from an amazing two night stay here with my boyfriend to summit Snowdon. The reviews don't really do the site justice, you have to go yourself to see its magic. It's got everything you want from a proper campsite: remote location, no mobile phone signal, good washing facilities for your body and your pots, fires with metal firepits/BBQs provided and firewood at £4 a bag, pizzas in the evening during high season and fabulous fabulous views. I wish my 10 year old had come with us as it was a truly excellent active family site. I was amazed at how quiet the site was at night, their non intrusive noise policy really works.
The best thing about the site is the lack of signs telling you what you can't do and the friendly, helpful staff who quietly maintain order on a really big and at times heaving site. We arrived on the Thursday before the bank holiday and pitched up easily with a wonderful lake view. However, when we left on bank holiday Saturday the site was *heaving* with a queue of cars to enter the site by 11am. Arrive early if you want to be guaranteed a spot at peak times!
We will definitely be coming back and taking advantage of the easy campsite access to the river and lake next time. Make sure you do take everything you need though, as the nearest shops are a LONG way away! They kept the toilets well stocked with loo roll and soap and the hot and cold water in the sinks was very welcome. There are also sockets in the loos for hairdryers (though I still don't get why people want to straighten their hair when they're camping!). A real bargain at £9 per night per adult and a very chilled vibe.
Site was very busy but well organised. Pitches are plentiful and there really is no need to book. Having said that, the site was full by Saturday afternoon of the bank holiday weekend. There is no electrical hook up but freezers are provided for ice packs. Toilets and showers were clean and well maintained but were very busy in the morning.
Location is beautiful views are stunning and there is a nice variety of walks from the site. We particularly enjoyed canoeing on the lake. Boat hire is available from the site and the views from the lake are lovely.
Pizzas cooked in the mobile wood fired oven were a highlight. All in all a good site for walkers and those looking to just relax in the mountain air.
We went to this site as a small group of 5 with 4 tents and 3 sailing dinghies. Our group was too small to be able to book any reservations so we just went with the understanding that they would be able to accommodate us on arrival. We came downhill from the north to the entrance of the site, the entrance was too tight to turn into from that direction with the boats on the back, so we went further down the road to where there is a large lay-by/parking area, where it was very easy to turn round and approach the site from the south. This made it easy to enter the site. The site warden was cheerful and helpful. Though the site seemed to be very full, which was understandable because it had been beautiful weather for some time and it was the weekend. We did find a space for our small group nearest to the water. The small beach was good enough to launch from and the sailing was excellent. The scenery was beautiful. The walking was just so good. The toilets and showers were clean.
It was a bonus to be able to have an open fire where we could just sit around and play our guitars and sing, having a great time.
Though there are not too many facilities on this site, the site was well run, clean and the location couldn’t have been any better. Just a word of warning, be prepared for the midges on calm evenings. Take some “Jungle Formula” insect repellent or something similar.
There is a nearby village “Beddjelert” with lots of pubs and places to eat. It is about 4. 5 to 5 miles away. The road to the village is pretty flat and easy to walk or ride a bike to. I am afraid there is no signal for your mobile phones unless you walk to the top of one of the nearby mountains. Some of the pubs in the village have free wi-fi.
We really enjoyed this site, it was near on perfect for us.
We stayed for a total of 4 days at Llyn Gwynant, as part of a 2 week circular tour of Wales.
The location is beautiful and scenic, with the site situated next to a lake. Be advised however that still water equals lots of midges! I was bitten on my legs 14 times within a couple of hours in one instance. Even a smoky fire and a hoodie made little difference. The site is close to Llanberis, Conwy, Portmerion and other attractions and there is a good Tesco 20-30 mins drive down the road in Porthmadog.
We enjoyed the boat hire, which was reasonably priced and enjoyable and the clerk was good humoured and easy going.
The facilities were plentiful, with good, free, hot (sometimes a little too hot) showers and plenty of toilets. The cleanliness of which, bearing in mind how busy the site became was reasonable and the wardens worked very hard to keep it this way - I awoke in the night to use the toilet at 4am to find a warden unblocking a basin!
The price during the week was the average for much of Wales at £15, however this changes and goes up during the weekend, which we found a little irritating.
We enjoyed our stay on the whole, but regretted that we didn't move on sooner, as it became a bit unbearably busy on the weekend and with no marked pitches, expect to be packed in like sardines. We were surprised to find that people were arriving well into midnight, so don't expect to get to bed early. Plenty of extreme sports types and teenagers mean that there's nonsensical yacking well into the night too.
Myself and a mate decided to tour the Welsh Mountains on our motorbikes and were delighted to have found this gem of a campsite. It is a large site, no prior booking is required, it is primarily for tents although they do have a dozen pitches for motorhomes/caravans, but, be warned the entrance to the site is incredibly tight. The big pluses for us were:
* Fire pits available, which we used to cook on
* Beautifully Hot showers and they are FREE
* Plenty of Showers and toilets
* Freezers for your freezer blocks
* Firepit wood at £4 per bag
* The superb lake
* The fantastic mountain scenery
* Friendly and helpful staff
* The proximity to Snowdon, Mountain Railway and the Pen-Y-Gwryd pub
There were a few midges around, but that is to be expected so close to water. The only improvement that could be mad is to provide a mop for each shower cubicle so that bits of grass/mud could be cleaned up by each user
We had a great time, one of the best sites that we have visited. I would heartily recommend it.
I have been to this site on and off for around 40 years and am delighted to have returned again this year.
There have been so many improvement over the past few years: especially the showers and toilets. Now there is a new reception building.
Much effort goes in to maintaining the site and, during the 10 day period of my visit, there was much mowing, strimming and cleaning up.
The uniformed staff are very friendly and helpful and they go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.
The majority of the site is given over to tents although there is space for caravans as well as a designated area, adjacent to the lake, for larger motorhomes. This area is also used by visiting boat trailers and a number of schools and outdoor organisations come to drop off canoes for boating activities on the lake.
The camping has a set of policies regarding noise, fires, recycling and so on. These are diplomatically but rigorously enforced by the staff including a noise indemnity for groups. You can be assured of a peaceful stay unlike in times gone by.
The weather during my stay was uncharacteristic for the region with sun and warmth every day and only a little rain on the final morning.
Be prepared for midges during the season as you are close to water!
There is little in the way of facilities nearby so it is important to stock up before arriving if you don't want to have to go shopping during the stay. There are some basic provisions on site and an occasional itinerant pizza sales technician as well as a cafe at Nantgwynant (not Mon - Tue).
There is often canoe hire from the site and provision for launching your own vessel from the beach or slipway. Motorised craft are not accepted.
The big thing for many is the accessibility to Snowdon and the surroundings. It takes around 90 minutes to walk to Pen-y-pass where there is incidentally cellphone reception for those on O2 at least. There is no Internet access from the camping and no cellphone coverage on any network.
Nice relaxing location, plenty of toilets and showers. Staff really lovely and helpful, small shop selling essentials. Right next to the lake and small stream, great for kids during the summer (quite shallow) Provide hire of `boats` Plenty of walks from easy through to professional. Nothing around but nice for a relaxing weekend. Ability to have an open fire adds to the relaxation, would advise to take some form of inspect repellent.
We visited this site with two other families last weekend as we planned to climb Snowdon and it was just what we wanted. The website explains everything better than I can so I suggest reading it as it covers everything.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the toilets and showers were always clean. The site had some large puddles in places (following all the rain recently this was not a surprise) but vehicles were not allowed on the fields so they were in good condition. Despite this there were still loads of room to camp and have your own space.
The open/log fires added something extra to the experience as we sat around chatting about the views from the top of the mountain. The lake and surrounding area was amazing and we will definitely visit again.
This is a really nice site. Only stayed a couple of nights. We pitched our tent in a very open part of the field so the wind came straight down the valley, very cold so try to get near some trees next time. Toilets and washing area are clean and the staff are friendly. There is a river that runs down one side so be warned if the weather is bad, it can flood part of the site. We walked to beddgelert that took about 1hour 45 minutes. Also ideal to do snowdon.
We, as a family & friends have been to this site three times now & will be returning,
I could write pages about this site, all I will say it's an awesome site, great views, great walks/climbs/kayaking, no noise after 23. 00 hrs which the warders are keen to enforce for the peace & quiet of other campers, The Warders very helpful & friendly & nothing is to much for them, brilliant.
If you are going in a caravan, make sure that you follow instructions, as in go past site for about 2miles there is a big layby with public toilets pull in & turn around here, go back up the hill to get in site as very tight entrance coming down the hill to get in,
