We have just returned from two nights at the Forest Site. We paid for the superior pitch with a picnic table this is classed as a larger pitch. , some of the other pitches do look very narrow so we were glad to have paid for the bigger.
No allocation of pitches so are able to choose our own.
Area was quite shaded in the trees and as there was little sun getting through got quite chilly throughout the day.
Staff were very friendly and on site shop sold the basics, they did do daily orders for cooked pizzas and warm bread and baguettes.
Surrounding area has fantastic views and Beddgelert has a charismatic charm and worth a visit. Make sure you call into the ice cream shop in Beddgelert with a vast choice to choose from.
Only negative point I have which is not a fault of the site but the area and is worth mentioning. We had no phone service and that was with O2 and Orange the site does provide phone boxes by the reception.
Whilst it is nice to get away from normality I do like to check home is alright when I was away.
For the TV lovers definitely no satellite signal so make sure you stock up on DVDs
Just got back from a 4 night stay at this wonderful site, in the bank holiday week. We were told we wouldn't have to book, just to turn up.
We had a wide choice of where to camp, and choose down by the river. There were quite a few hard standing pitches for tents, but we didn't fancy this, though in wet weather I'm sure it would have made some sense. Apart from the midges, the riverside spot was lovely, the white noise of the river at night made for a good night's sleep for us all and the soft ground helped too.
The shop was well provisioned, and the baked stuff was very good, if only they wouldn't insist on you having to order it the day before, or would bake a few more extras, on the days we didn't order croissants or bread, we got to the shop just after 9am when they started selling them and everything had gone.
It's really well placed for Beddgelert (about a mile) and Snowdon's just a few miles away. The Wales Highland Railway going through the site was lovely and it would have been great to catch it to Portmadog or Caernavon, except it was £22 per adult for a day return, though kids under 16 were free, and as the first train was at 10. 30 and it took 1hr 40 mins you wouldn't even have got a full day.
All the facilities were spotless and hot water always available. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
We love this site! Forest, waterfalls, mountains, a steam railway, marvellous friendly wardens and lovely facilities. The only thing which we could ask for. A mobile phone signal (just to have the peace of mind that we are contactable in an emergency). But despite this we will keep coming back as the site and area are truly magical.
Premium/Select pitches with EHU are marked out. Select (I think) have their own picnic tables. Most pitches are on slate hard standing. Standard tent pitches are choose a spot in field or wooded clearing 3m from your neighbours. Bring rock pegs and decent mallet!
Loos and showers (free/push button) are located in two blocks. Both clean and modern. Dishwash area is indoors and good. There are laundry facilities but we have never used these.
There is a cabin 'den' with seating, local information etc. The reception is welcoming and includes a shop with all your basics plus camping bits/bobs (rock pegs!).
Outside the facilities block and the Den are picnic tables. The ones outside the facilities are undercover.
The on site bakery is great - we like the croissants and bloomer loaves. Order night before and collect at 9am.
Freezer block freezing in reception (30p per block when we were last there).
The kids playground is great and there are lovely walks from the site.
There is a bus stop at the entrance to the site. We didn't use it but met other campers who said it was a good service.
Top of site boosts the Welsh Highland Railway track and a request stop station. It's fabulous! Every day we checked the timetable and wandered up with our morning coffee to see this spectacular sight. The trip to Porthmadog is lovely. We got a discount on tickets as Camping and Caravan Club members.
There is no site WIFI. May be if possible something to be considered by Camping in the Forest. Even if it just covered the public areas such as the Den and Reception. It would help compensate for the lack of mobile phone signal and no doubt increase coffee and bakery sales as folk downloaded email and checked the latest weather forecast. In the meantime there are a couple of pay phones on site.
Beddgelert is charming with shops for the basics and some nice eateries. Ice Cream (Glaslyn Ices) being a favourite.
Such a wonderful site and stunning area - well worth a visit.
Arrived late at campsite but owner was friendly & helpful in locating a pitch for the tourer.
The hard pitches have electricity and there are well placed shower and toilet blocks.
Our car was playing up and we could not get the caravan off the site but Rob & Jeanette were very helpful and understanding and stored it for a few days till we got the car repaired.
We would highly recommend this friendly and picturesque site to anyone
We arrived(2 adults, 1 dog) and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Some of the pitches were very wet but you could take your pick and so we chose one of the dryer ones. Nice and picturesque campsite, woken to bird song every morning, quiet otherwise.
Bathrooms and showers were clean enough but strangely there was a keypad lock on the ladies bathroom but not on the shower?! The one thing that annoyed us greatly was the fact that we had paid for electric hook up and so taken all of our electric camping appliances. We had our fridge plugged in but every time we tried to use the kettle both ours and our neighbours electric turned off and had to be switched on again by someone from reception or (as we were told) we could do it ourselves if we had a screwdriver (which we didn't). Apparently this site has both 10amp and 16amp hook ups, unfortunately not informed of this and not labelled which is a bit rubbish so our electric appliances other than the fridge were useless. The chap who came to switch the electric back on for the second time didn't seem particularly bothered and simply informed us that some of them had been updated and some hadnt (nice to know) and in his opinion 16amp was too much! Luckily our friends were camping in a tent and lent us a kettle!
Nice site and some friendly staff but paid for something we couldn't really use. Bit disappointed really. But we requested to have a late leave as we had climbed mount snowden in challenging weather and were knackered. They were very good about it and didn't charge us extra. Lovely site, shame about electric though.
Glanllyn is situated on the shore of Lake Bala in Wales. 16 acres of natural parkland and spectacular views of nearby hills and mountains make it an idyllic spot to pitch a caravan, motorhome, tent or campervan with level grass or hardstanding pitches. For water sports enthusiasts there is a private shingle beach with easy launching area for windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding. Camp shop, wifi, laundrette, excellent heated toilet & shower facilities. The market town of Bala is 3 miles away with plenty of small shops, pubs & retaurants, cinema and a leisure centre. We visited (x2 adults and a dog) at the end of January for a few days despite their being weather warnings from the MET Office. When I called in advance the owners advised that the site was well sheltered and well drained, and when we arrived we found it to be exactly as such.
We opted for a hard standing pitch with EHU and the owner had advised us to bring rock pegs and believe me, you will need them to pitch up a tent on the hard standing-they sell them in the shop for £1 each if you are short. The owner borrowed us a steel hammer to get them in too, as we had a rubber mallet-good advice to heed!
Despite that there was only 1 other tent on the entire site, we had a lovely three night stay, the weather was unusually warm and dry and the site was sheltered by the wind to a certain extent by the trees. The showers/toilets were well looked after and clean with plenty of warm water; the washing facilities were brilliant too. The site was clean & tidy and the owners were really welcoming and helpful, even letting us use their gas bottle to cook breakfast one morning as ours ran out! Watch out for the potholes on the bridge over the river when entering the site. There is also a communal room where you can chill out of you don't fancy the pub or your tent. There is a shop on site although we didn't need it.
It is only a ten minute walk into Beddgelert so which has some nice pubs (only 2 are dog friendly, the Saracen & the Prince). The shop carries enough of what you would need and takes card over £10 purchase price (small charge otherwise) but Portmaddog is only ten mins down the road in car where there is a Lidl and other larger stores. The Gelert shop in the village has some nice stuff if you need an emergency waterproof as we did (some good offers on too). The post office is open until 12 midday and you can use your debit card to make cash withdrawals over the counter(not Santander though, unfortunately, something to do with the bank?). There is a wealth of walks from the village just waiting to be explored, including Snowdon on the Watkins path.
Watch out for rogue Squirrels however, if you have an opening, they will sneak into your tent & steal food-even in packaging as we found out!
Otherwise a really nice site and one which I would love to visit again.
We stayed during a very wet October half term and feared the worst - a boggy pitch, getting stuck in the mud as we had read that the pitches were spread amongst the trees in this forest site.
Thankfully all the pitches were hard standing so we had no problems at all apart from the incessant rain which we could hardly blame on the site!
The site is situated in a great location with access to a the wonderful scenery in this part of North Wales and even has its own stop on the Welsh Highland Railway. There are walks leading directly off the site into the local forest and hillsides. At the time of our stay the site was very busy and we did feel quite hemmed in at times as the spaces between pitches wasn't that great, although the informal layout helped with this and it did look like other pitches on site were more generous, luck of the draw really. Facilities were plentiful, clean and well maintained but during our stay I had a daily battle trying to get hot water out of the showers, but my wife experienced no problem at all - perhaps it was just me?
The site wardens were very helpful and full of local knowledge and there is a shop selling all the usual necessities.
Overall we were very happy with our visit but feel that we would have enjoyed the site more had thee weather been better - it was truly awful. We can imagine a warm spring day in the forest with the birds singing and sunshine filtering through the trees would be wonderful!
Overall a very pleasing stay and when we return the weather will, hopefully be kinder!
Absolutely love this site. I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's nice to come back here with my own children. The site is nicely laid out with gravel pitches set out within the trees. The wildlife is fantastic. We hung a bird feeder in the tree next to our van and enjoyed watching all the different bird species feeding. There are lovely forest walks from the site and Snowdon mountain paths are not far away. There is loads to do for people of all ages in the local area. The staff are lovely. Really helpful and chatty. The shower block is clean with plenty of showers and wash cubicles.
The steam railway runs along the back of the site, which was a worry to me, as it wasn't there when I last visited. However it was quite magical especially so for my 3 year old train obsessed son. It certainly wasn't a nuisance, but added a certain timeless charm to the surroundings. Beddgelert itself is well worth a visit. There's a lovely ice cream shop selling a wide variety of local ice creams. A visit to Gelerts grave is a must.
Some people on here have commented that the site was dark and gloomy, it is a forest site and the description's in the name. If you want bright unbroken sunshine then this isn't the site ( or indeed the country) for you. If you like somewhere that feels a bit special, but isn't all Tarmacked perfectly lined up rows, then you'll probably love it. Either way, we'll be going back later this year. Well worth the long drive for me,
We have just returned from a couple of days away at this delightful site. It really is camping in the forest, so beautiful and the river Colwyn really does run through the site. Surrounded by mountains in the heart of Snowdonia and the lush forest, there are lots of walks with rivers and streams abound. The other campers were also very friendly with one camper telling us that he had been visiting for 17 years.
The toilets and showers are exceptionally clean and there are many walks especially if you have a dog as there is so much to do, it is great for children too with so many activities as well as a children's play park. You can also catch the steam train to Caernarvon on the site as the track runs round one side of the park, fenced off of course.
If you want some time away just to get back to nature I would recommend this site, the pitches are not all in a line either like some sites, rather they are dotted under the trees, like literally you have just driven into a forest and taken up camp for the night, the staff are very friendly with just a 10 minute walk up the road to the nearest pub and the village is quite near although the shop on site does sell a lot of things. I will definitely be going back again in the near future.
The site is ideally situated to explore Snowdonia National Park, by whatever means you chose. The road from Caernarfon to the site is very narrow in areas and has a number of bends that can make towing interesting if meeting other vehicles coming in the opposite direction, as we did on a number of occasions.
The site is located within the forest and the caravan pitches are amongst the trees on hard standing, this is made up of broken slate, rock pegs and a suitable hammer/mallet are required. The pitches are at various levels around the site and chocks and blocks are required to assist in levelling caravans on many pitches that we observed.
The site has a well stocked shop, various fresh baked bread products are available, the site facilities were well maintained and kept very clean and the wardens were very pleasant.
The Welsh Highland Railway has a request stop at the site and steam trains passing regularly make a pleasing site.
Due to the location of the site, various pitches have no tv or mobile coverage and there is no WiFi provision.
The access road to the site is in extremely poor condition and is in need of repair, deeply rutted over the bridge and care should be taken when crossing this area and when travelling around the site as it is a forest road and has holes and ruts in it.
The site, unfortunately is one we would not return to, as the location in the forest made it dark with little sun breaking through. When it rained, water was pouring around the van and kept falling heavily from the trees a long time after the rain had stopped, the van and awning were very dirty after only a few nights due to the debris falling from the trees and the water splashing up off the slate.

Just back from a 4 day stay at this site. The staff were friendly and helpful.
We were shown on the site map where the select pitches were and allowed to choose where we wanted to pitch.
There was a play area which seemed fine.
There is a shop in the reception from which you can get your basic supplies, there is also a site bakery you place your order the day before and get your fresh baked bread, rolls etc at 9am the next day.
The toilets & showers were very clean & tidy, we even saw the warden checking the toilets and replenishing toilet rolls at 10. 00pm.
The site was very restful the only sounds were running water, rustling trees and the occasional steam train.
The best motorhome service area we have seen, with waste water disposal, as well as chemical waste.
Received a warm and friendly welcome after a long drive and was told to drive round and choose a pitch that we liked. We had paid for a hard standing (slate chips) with electric and there were plenty of choices, remember to take rock pegs and a hammer as my mallet wasn't up to the job.
The site is large but it does not feel that big due to it being divided up into different areas. The site was fairly water logged in places but then it did rain for a week while we were there! The showers and toilets were always clean except the floors but that is to be expected with the weather we were having. The showers were hot and powerful and there was never a queue for any facilities. The on site shop has all the basic needs plus a bakery that did great rolls and bread and a fab take away pizza.
The site has easy access to the forest and has some wonderful walks and bike rides. We came across a large lake and there wasn't a soul around so we spent a pleasant hour watching a heron fishing and generally chilling out.
There are 2 routes to walk to Beddgelert, one down the road but it is unlit with no footpath so take a torch for the return if it will be dark and one through the forest and over farmland which is beautiful but gets very muddy. The village is lovely with a choice of pubs, cafes and shops.
There is a steam train service called the Welsh Highland Railway, I think, which stops at the site but by request, it felt strange putting your arm out to stop a train, and the track runs through the mountains and offers stunning views.
Overall the site is fab, the staff friendly and helpful and the surrounding mountains, forests and villages are stunning. Will be going back without a doubt just hope it doesn't rain as much next time
We arrived late and got a ticking off -oops! The light was fading and we were advised to set up in the first field. But we didn't, and got a gem of a pitch, which turned a 1 night stay to a 4 night stay.
This is far pricier than we would usually pay for a caravan pitch. We use a powerpack to run our electricity, but found that electricity was in the pitch price whether we used it or not. We were planning on moving on the following day - until the steam engine pulled up in front of us eating our breakfast. How cool is that! Kids (and adults) were really impressed with that.
Showers were fine - lots of hot water on a push button timer, didn't have to wait a turn.
My children enjoyed the play area and especially the cycle routes on the other side of the railway.
Beddgelert ideally located for great choice of days out. Fabulous part of the world. Have to agree with the micro-climate comment in other posts!
Only real point to comment on is huge ruts on entrance road
First thing we noticed on arriving towards the site was the mobile signal disappeared, but this didn't worry us - it's quite nice to have no communication with the outside world!
Arrived at the site, all lovely and clean, lady at reception was lovely, and we had asked to pitch close to our friends, so she went to find out where they pitched, but I told her I could see the tent as our friend had pre-told us where they had pitched.
You can't park your car next to the tent on the grassy area when you first come in by the park, but this was fine. It was all grassy some slate/stone in areas and uneven, but not a problem.
We pitched about 5m from our friends, the kids were playing in the park, it was quite nice there was something for them to do while we pitched up.
Weather was lovely on arrival, great to pitch up!
Once we were all set up we cooked lunch and then went to look around the site while we waited for our friends to arrive back.
Toilet facilities were great, nice and clean, and you need a code to get in but it is easy to remember. Laundry and dish washing facilities were great.
We went to the little train station and watched the steam train pass through and went to the little streams too for the kids.
Friends arrived back so the women went to Porthmadog to Tesco to get BBQ stuff, had a lovely BBQ and stayed up till children got tired. We had to move into tent about 9pm even though we sprayed ourselves with midgy spray and had about 5 citronella candles going there were loads of nats, I mean loads!
Site was lovely and peaceful and went to bed by about 10. 30pm.
Woke up to lovely skies had breakfast al fresco and went off to Beddgelert, weather turned nasty, but we still enjoyed ourselves. Ate at the famous Gladnwr cafe and got an ice cream from glaslyn ices - yummy!
Took the kids in their wet weather gear back to the steam train station on campsite, they also played in the park while it was raining, but it is a little slippy. Managed to play in and out of the tent as rain was on and off.
We had ordered pizzas for the evening, and they were lovely, also the bakery items were lovely too.
Only problem we had was our new tent had a few leak problems nothing major and it continued to rain into the night, didn't sleep well as I had visions of a full flood in the tent!
Packing up was a nightmare in the rain, but an experience
Overall we loved this site, would recommend and go back too
Wardens are helpful to a point, but to be told go and find your own pitch after a 3 hour drive doesn't strike me as helpful.
Luckily we found a perfect spot next to the steam railway that runs through the site, although we did arrive early Friday pm.
Beddgelert village is a lovely place to visit, with plenty of local shops and do try the local ice cream. It's fantastic!
Saturday on site is an eye opener, with late arrivals looking for a decent pitch, I lost count of the times we we're asked how long we were staying, obviously we got one of the better pitches!
Showers in the forest part were really hot, but were a bit dated, but nothing wrong with them.
Children's playground is good during the daytime, but watch the midges later on!
A recent addition is a BBQ man who makes your food for you, just down by the reception/shop. Food looked really nice, but I prefer my own BBQ thanks very much!
Some pitches are very sloping/steep so be aware, and campers in the actual forest part of the site were being a little noisy, however I can only comment about the weekend we were there!
We will go back at some point, not sure if it'll be soon.
