Just back ! Good trip site wonderful staff helpful but overworked
But must agree with earlier reviewer about access code for toilets its a 6 figure code like c1234x, its in a dark hallway your towel & sponge bag in one hand & then you have to turn the knob, self defeating as people inside hear you struggling & let you in (whether you've paid for that site or not ). Lots of very large tents size of the Albert Hall ( their money's as good as mine )
You must pay for electric whether you want it or not & now half the pitches have picnic tables, when they're the only pitches left you have to pay an extra 4 quid a night for one of those
But the forest is massive & a forest will I go back yes of course !
We have just spent 8 nights here, we arrived when the office was busy, we were given a map, and told to pitch where we liked in the allotted caravan area. We had expected the pitches would at least be in clearings and be a bit further apart, so it was dark to say the least, it only rained once in the week which was at night, but it seamed to rain all night with the constant dripping from the trees. The toilets had been refurbished and looked new, which were locked with a key pad there wasn’t enough light to see the numbers even during the day I took a torch, the showers which were separate and were not locked (only 3 in the block we were closest to) you stepped back into the 70ies pine clad even the ceiling, which dripped constantly, as the extractor fan wasn’t enough to clear the room of steam even with the windows left open, the light was on a timer so you ended up in the dark after about 5 minutes, no mirror or hair dryer you had to go back to the toilets to use those.
The village of Beddgelert has a lot to offer, a good stocked shop, and quite a few pubs, hotels a pizza restaurant and fish & chip shop, also free car park. The nearest petrol station about 7 in Porthmadog. The area is great for walking and the scenery once out of the site in breathtaking. Would we go back no, other Forest Holiday sites are a lot better.
This is my 5th visit to Beddgelert and some years since my last visit, and I was not disappointed.
The site is as good as ever, the staff were extremely helpful and approachable, always had the local weather, and the mountain weather at hand for hikers and casual tourists alike.
Each day we could order in fresh breads for breakfast and have pizza and burgers for dinner, all freshly cooked to order on site. They served fresh coffees as well all at a reasonable price.
We felt happy knowing we could let the kids off the leash for a while.
There is a good well equipped play ground for the children and a wild life exploring room with lots of local information about the flora and fauna to be found in the forest.
The added attraction of the recently reopened Welsh Highland Railway station made the site perfect.
The toilets and showers are basic, but clean, there is a laundry and washing up room and the site was overall well cared for.
Gas and basic camping supplies were also available on site.
Only downside is the midges and the lack of milk on a daily basis in the shop, but perfect site otherwise.
Will we go back? you bet we will. We just had the best holiday and camping experience ever.
Have just returned from a weekend break, arriving Friday lunchtime, we were advised it was going to be a full weekend, and that we had arrived at the right time to find somewhere.
Booking in was fairly straight forward, if not a bit slow, we were given a map, and told to find a suitable pitch, within the areas she advised.
With map in hand off we drove, needless to say we were a little disappointed with what we saw before us.
Pitches were not number marked, so in essence you could pitch anywhere, keeping approx 3M from the next tent, although they do advise the pitch sizes are 5M x 8M, sadly though we were unable to find a pitch that was flat enough to accommodate our tent which is 7. 5M x 3M, on the grass area. We thought we had found a reasonable spot, but upon inspection we would have all ended up at one end, the slope was that severe.
We drove round a bit more, and eventually ended up down a small lane, which we believe was hardstanding for a caravan, this was the only place available that was flat, and would take our tent. Tent erected, and rock pegs secured, we pitched, we were under trees which suited us, and also by the stream which ran through the site.
The kids loved the stream, crystal clear, and was a used as a short cut to the facilities.
Toilet block was huge, access was key coded, but 9 times out of 10, someone was coming out so it wasn't used. There were 8 toilets, 5 showers, and 6 personal sinks with doors, 2 dodgy hand dryers, which in all honesty you could blow warmer.
There were queues for the showers, and and although a mop and bucket to mop up excess water, don't think anybody did this. One thing which was odd, if you had used the loo, but all the sinks were in use, there was no additional sinks to wash your hands, an oversight maybe for when the site is busy in the mornings.
Washing up facilities were clean, on average 6 sinks, 2 dryers @1. 50 and 2 washing machines, plus 12 heated dryers. Water was always piping hot, taps however were the type you had to push down to get water out, and seemed like an eternity to fill the sink.
Toilets were a bit hit and miss with the flushing. Although several pumps of the handle seemed to do the trick.
In the reception area, you could order pizza, coffee, jacket potatoes, and bread for either later that day, or the following morning, needless to say we didn't bother, over £4. 00 for a jacket spud and butter could work out a bit pricey for a family.
The site had limited lighting, and is mainly non EHU for tents. We did find the EHU section, but this only accommodates 5, so you would have to be very lucky to get one of those, that said, you were very close to the neighbours.
There was a narrow gauge railway that ran past the site, you could get on and off at the site, if you told the conductor when getting on at a station.
As mentioned on previous threads, there were millions of midges, despite having the citronella candles going, and spraying ourselves in midge repellent, the little blighters got through and bit us all to death. On the brighter side. There were no mobile phone signals, for either orange, vodaphone, or tesco, or any other network operator. Bliss.
The surrounding area is beautiful, we found a lake which the kids took the dinghy on for a couple of hours. A peaceful and tranquil break, we will return, but maybe with a smaller tent, so we can pitch on the grass.
Just returned from a fantastic weekend at this lovely site. Arrived to a very warm welcome. Had previously booked and paid online which was very easy to follow.
We did a quick tour of the site and picked a nice spot under the trees (not too difficult as it is a forest site).
The Steam train runs through the site about 3 times a day which was nice to see.
The trails around the forest were great on our mountain bikes but would also be great for walking too.
Toilets and showers were always spotlessly clean. The showers were actually the most powerful I have ever experienced! Will definitely be back with the kids and the dog.
Make sure you take your Insect repellent as the midgies are relentless!
Glanllyn is situated on the shore of Lake Bala in Wales. 16 acres of natural parkland and spectacular views of nearby hills and mountains make it an idyllic spot to pitch a caravan, motorhome, tent or campervan with level grass or hardstanding pitches. For water sports enthusiasts there is a private shingle beach with easy launching area for windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding. Camp shop, wifi, laundrette, excellent heated toilet & shower facilities. The market town of Bala is 3 miles away with plenty of small shops, pubs & retaurants, cinema and a leisure centre. I knew it would be dark, but I wasn't prepared for exactly how dark! What were once clearings, now have a tree canopy over them. We were on a pitch by the railway which was cold, damp and dark. The rain fell from a great height, from the canopy overhead and sounded like marbles on top of the roof. You couldn't hear yourself think, let alone try to sleep. I'm aware that this is a forest, but the canopy should be trimmed back over the hard pitches just to let some light and a bit of warmth in. I needed the lights on in the caravan to cook and see into the cupboards, etc most of the day. The other really bad point was that no light and lots of rain led to gazillions of midges, so take some repellent with you.
The facilities were good at this end of the site, good hot showers and cleaned once a day.
It would have been lovely with a bit of light, but you couldn't even tell what the weather was like until you left the campsite. The only mobile signal we found was on the main road by the entrance.
I think this site would be lovely in the spring, when the bluebells are out and the leaves aren't thick on the trees. Or from September onwards when they fall. I note most of the other reviewers that did have a good time were staying at these times.
Didn't work for us, we left a day early and just went home.
Had read previous reviews and thought warnings of midges must be overstated - they weren't! Only my husbands skin reacted badly though - myself and 2 children were OK. The 'bites' tended to fade off our skin for some reason. But the blighters were damned annoying! Take lots of repellent with you.
The site itself is lovely with the river, streams and railway running through. But because of trees it can be quite dark in places (it is a forest!) and there is no phone signal until you get back to main road.
My Kids loved going to pick up warm, fresh baked rolls for breakfast (pre ordered) from the shop which was quite well stocked with all the basics.
After booking in you are given a map to find and select your own pitch (depending on which type booked) some of the access is very tight and the pitch we chose and thought looked pretty level turned out not to be and took a lot to get sorted.
Didn't use showers but heard people complaining about cleanliness.
Lovely Cafe / takeaway and nice assortment of shops in the village.
Loved the site, very friendly and relaxing. We pitched on the family field adjacent to the playground which had its pros and cons, namely we could let out two young children go by themselves as we were only a few meters away watching. But the playground could be noisy up until 10pm with older kids which was a problem due to ours going to bed a 7pm, however the noise did stop at 10pm and was quite thereafter.
Whilst the toilet / shower block was clean it was in desperate need of a facelift and renovation which I believe was due to take place in May. Only grip was that the soap dispenser was always empty, in the end I tracked down the site warden who sorted it straight away.
Lots to do in the area and the site has a very idyllic river running through which I explored with my oldest daughter.
I love this site. It's in a prime location for ramblers, walkers. Beddgelert village is near by. Fab walks from the campsite, very canine friendly, with plenty of dog bins. Rock pegs is a must, because of it's location. EHU is available, for tenters book early is a must if needed.
The permanent tents have been relocated to one area, much better. The campsite grounds are well cared for. The children's play area is well used, the river is a big attraction for children. Other facilities on site: laundry room, dishwashing area, also a den which is great for hanging up those wet outdoor gear.
Very warm and cosy if it's really cold and wet. Magazine and tourist leaflets are kept here, plus two vending machines which sells soft drinks and chocolate bars outside. The shop/reception sells basic items, milk, bacon, sausages, ect and camping equipment.
A new addition, they have an ordering service, for breakfast rolls, baguettes and croissants, sausage or bacon baps, etc or pizzas, they sell hot drinks as well.
The only let down was the toilet and shower facilities. I feel that these could be cleaned or checked more often. Never had this problem in the past. But People could use the mop bucket to clean up after themselves.
The staff are friendly, will chat, and supply maps of the campsite and advice you where you may want to pitch.
Overall I would recommend this site; spoke to other campers, first timers they said they would come again.
Been to this site a few times over the years, lovely place to go for walks in the forest which is the appeal for us. Nice site, lots of pitches of good size none of which are too far away from any facilities. Dishwashing facilities fantastic, showers could do with an update but are ok, hot water just the dreaded timed buttons but you can't have everything. Midges are a problem at this site, and therefore do take insect repellant you will need it. A walk into town is easy to do from this site, the quickest way is down the road where there is no footpath but we have found this ok with two dogs. Some good pubs in beddgelert for a drink and a bite to eat. Never had any problems getting booked on this site not even at bank holidays due to number of pitches.

We booked four days at this site and would have left after one if we had not already paid in full. Dont want to start too negative so will start with the positive things about the site.
Most of all the staff were very friendly and helpful, lovely walks from the site. A lovely steam train which passes through the top of the site a few times a day. Showers fantastic hot and clean. Pretty site as long as you enjoy being under forest cover. 20 minutes walk along the road into Beddgelert, lovely village with a few nice places to drink and eat.
Negatives, ***MIDGIES ****although we had paid for a picnic table, we could not use this at all due to the many hundreds of thousands of midgies, these really were a huge problem and discussed leaving after one day as we like to sit outside and enjoy the outdoor life but found ourselves seeking cover in our caravan. We were not alone as after 7. 30pm nobody appeared to be sitting outside. Not sure why a code was needed for the toilets/showers as this was a nuisance if you forgot the 6 digit code. At £23. 00 a night for two people in a caravan, not the best value campsite we have stayed on. In a nutshell nice location but a bit dark under the trees and if it rains as someone else commented it sounded like marbles hammering on the roof.
I am so glad that many users have been happy and enjoyed their stay on this site.
We however found the place really claustrophobic with nearly all the pitches for caravans stuck under the canopy of trees. It was raining when we arrived and we found the pitches inadequately drained, not particularly level and very muddy with rotting forest vegetation.
There were plenty of pitches for tents in the open and we were surprised how few for caravans.
Being under trees meant the noise from falling rain was amplified as the rain formed into big drops and continued to fall long after the rain had stopped.
We used the toilet facilities a couple of times and was annoyed at having to use a code in a lock system especially when it was dark and we could not see.
Some folk would say it is a 'Forest Holiday' but we had not expected to be literally under a big canopy with little light and no satellite signal. I can't imagine how long it would take to dry out the ground under the thick canopy of trees.
I can imagine this site being great for families when the sun is shining. But, if you want open views, a clean and relatively peaceful time during wet conditions I would not recommend.
Not having children after 24 years we did not require the play area which would be great for families.
What we wanted was a peaceful, open campsite that offered some sky space and maybe a view. If you want this don't go. We upped camp the next day and found a fantastic site a mile or two away which was a little piece of heaven on earth; level, clean under foot, fantastic views and great satellite signal and wifi and great facilities which did not need a code.
The shop looked well stocked but since we did not stay we can not comment
This really is a forest campsite, when you arrive you are given a map and told what type of pitch you are booked on. As we were in a motorhome this suited us as we could drive around looking for a level pitch.
The pitch we picked was in front of the new steam railway track which we were not aware of until the train passed, they even have their own station.
The small shower/toilet block was near our pitch and the showers were hot and powerful (just what you need after walking up Snowdon). My husband used the bigger block that same morning and he was not impressed as the water was only warm and trickled out.
We went so we could walk up Snowdon, we asked about routes from the campsite and did not find the staff helpful. We made enquiries at the outdoor shop down the road and a very friendly gentleman gave us some good advise.
I would recommend this site as you really did feel you were in the middle of nowhere but if you don't like being left to your own devices and want newly mowed grass then it's not for you.
Had a 3 night break here with wife, son and 2 dogs. Met up with friends and there was plenty of choice regarding pitches. We opted for a select pitch in the far corner as it was next to the steam railway and had a stream flowing behind us - absolute bliss!
Arrival was easy, told to pitch up and come back later ir in the morning to settle up. Very relaxed atmosphere but also well managed. Rob the warden wandered around frequently making sure all was well but wasn't intrusive.
The facilities were spotless and well stocked with loo roll etc. Plenty of hot water, free showers and no queues.
The shop is well stocked and the staff pleasant and friendly, as well as been well educated on the local area.
There's always something to do nearby.
There is a small playground for the youngsters and a snug with magazines etc for the rainy days.
Be careful not to miss the entrance though otherwise its a reversing job or a tricky turnaround in either direction.
All in all well worth the money and well worth another visit.
