Just like the last reviewer, this was our first time camping (with a 10 week-old baby to boot) so we decided on this site because it is close to home and seems to have a good reputation.
The people in reception on arrival and departure were first-rate and very friendly and helpful. The site itself is in a beautiful setting nestled up against the lower slopes of Dumyat at the western end of the Ochil hills, so there is no shortage of scenery. The site is located on the A91 between Stirling and Menstrie, so there are plenty of local amenities and tourist attractions, but little within easy walking distance. There is no shop on site but rolls, milk and papers can be ordered from reception.
The layout of the site was a little less than intuitive, however, and I share the previous reviewer's concern that most of the facilities (toilets, showers, laundry, play area) were located very near the entrance to the site. As the main tent area is at the very rear of the site, this meant a good old walk to use any of the facilities. That's no problem during the day, but it's a right old pain at 4am when it's raining.
To be fair, despite their location, the facilities are superb: warm, scrupulously clean and served by a welcoming 24hr radio feed. I should also add that there are points for drinking water, waste water and rubbish/litter provided throughout the site, so you won't have to walk far for those. The play area is small but well-equipped, although some of the apparatus was a little too big for my 4 year-old daughter.
All in all this was a very positive first experience for my family and I and, despite one or two minor niggles, we really enjoyed our stay here. There is a lovely atmosphere at this site and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for families with younger kids.
This is a lovely site spotless toilets, very friendly owners, small shop you can order milk & papers for the morning, what a view of the Ochil hills, you can climb to the top if your fit enough as quite a few did when we were there, there's also a kids play park which the kids seemed to love, the park was also quiet at night no drunken carry on when your trying to sleep, It’s handy for Stirling shops, Castle, Wallace monument and much more, will return soon.
The only thing that annoyed me was having to pay extra to use my canopy, no sides just the roof, thought this was a bit greedy, a few sites seem to be doing this now. Still a nice site for all the family.
As a first time camper I was very nervous but I needn't have been because this site was better than I could have ever expected. The staff were very friendly and I noticed that one of the girls did checks every so often round the park to make sure everything was OK.
The toilets were clean and the play area although probably only suitable for under 10s was of high quality too. The only negative thing I would say is that the play park would have been better situated in the centre rather than at the entrance and then all campers could keep an eye on their children.
I sat with my 8 year old in the park while he played as I was too scared to leave him as it was so close to the entrance. However, that said we all had a great time and met some lovely people. The park wasn't noisy at night (apart from the sheep on the hills)
Would really recommend this site so much so that we plan to go again next weekend.
Another excellent week at Witches Craig. I cannot fault this campsite. It is very central, we left the car at Stirling and took the train to Edinburgh, which took less than an hour. We were only 40 mins from Knockhill racetrack as well.
The facilities are 5*, plentiful hot water and extremely clean. The radio is a nice touch in the toilet blocks too!
A fridge freezer in the laundry room for iceblocks etc £2.40 for a load of washing, which we managed to dry outside as the weather was beautiful, £1 for around 15 mins in the tumble drier.
The staff are very friendly and helpful too.
The dog walk was free from litter and doggy do's and although we didn't have our dog with us this time it was still a pleasure to have a walk every evening.
There is a playpark but our 3 yr old never used it so cant comment on it, but it looked well maintained.
Beautiful site in an excellent location for exploring the surrounding area. The Ochil Hills form a stunning backdrop to the site.
On arrival, we were met by very friendly and helpful staff and, although there is no site shop, there was the opportunity to order newspapers, rolls, etc. There is ample shopping nearby.
Touring caravan pitches are almost all hardstanding - make sure you have rock pegs for your awning.
Toilet/shower block was always very clean and the piped music was a good feature. A second hairdryer in the ladies would be handy.
Dog walking area is very close by and can easily be extended into a decent walk.
We would recommend this site and it is our intention to return in the future.
This was our second visit to the site. This is a well run facility with good facilities. The toilets are regularly cleaned and the washing facilities were modern and well lit.
Pitch layout ensures good privacy and the staff are friendly and helpful. Sensibly located motorhome service point ensured easy access to grey water dump and chemical disposal.
This site is a gem and I warmly recommend it *****
My fiancee and I bought our first tent to try camping for the very first time in the morning and arrived at this lovely site in the afternoon. As we had bought the large Sahara 6 tent we were concerned about getting a pitch as we have seen some sites only take a certain size of tent.No fears here as we were warmly accepted.
Extremely friendly greeting which remained all through our stay. Site was spotless as was the dish washing / laundry / toilet block and is a credit to the owners and staff.
We took a walk up the Ochil hills and the views are superb and are worth the effort.
Thanks to the lovely weather, location and the warm welcome we will be back again through the summer.
Excellent site which deserves all the credit it receives.
This was my first caravan trip age 48. Used my sisters van and had the in-laws with us as we stayed 4 nights at this site before moving up to Fort William for another 4.
What a lovely little gem of a site with plenty near by places to go see and do.
Went into Edinburgh for the day using the park and ride system just outside the city.
Stirling Castle and the Wallace monument are a must.
Shame it has no little shop but supermarket is just down the road.
The road outside the camp gets the boy racers late in the evenings who love to let us know what a big bore exhaust they have but apart from that it’s a lovely place.
We booked in for 2 nights but stayed 3 as the weather (and the site) were wonderful!
On arrival we were greeted warmly at reception. I did expect the tent field to be much bigger but as it was early in the season there were very few tents there.
The tent area is a bit bumpy and uneven but we found an area to pitch easily, might not be so easy in busier months. What a relief to be able to hammer in tent pegs with ease! We didn't need to use them as the weather was fab but the undercover huts would have been great had it rained. Water was available on the tent field which was handy, the addition of fire points nearby was reassuring!
The toilet block was the best I've known. Heated and very clean. We didn't have to queue for showers but again the park was not even a quarter full so not sure how this might be in the summer months. Music in the toilets is a great idea. The dishwash area again was kept clean and tidy as was the laundry room which had a washer and dryer, an iron and a freezer (great for our ice packs!).
The dog walk area was really welcomed as our dog is a huge part of our family, however, as we are so careful to clear up after our dogs I also think that children or parents of children should be asked and reminded to clear up their kids juice bottles and sweetie wrappers, the entrance to the dog walk area was littered with sweet wrappers.
The surrounding areas were gorgeous although the weather was so nice we hardly ventured off site! The coffee bothy just 5 minutes walk down the (very very busy!) road, we took the car because of this was lovely, we ate outside from the takeaway section but beware it closes at 2.30pm, some beautiful meals cooked on site as well as cakes and biscuits.
So the bad points. Well to be honest there were virtually none, one I've mentioned was the litter in the dog walking area and the only other one was the tent field being furthest away from the amenity block. The addition of even a portaloo in the tent field would be great for late night visits. Even that didn't bother us that much but again that was due to the weather, I wouldn't fancy making that walk at 2am in the dark when it's pouring of rain.
All in all a most excellent site that we'll visit again, although I will go out of season as I feel it might be very very busy with children in the summer months.
This is a great wee site. It's set at the foot of the Ochil Hills and the views up to these and over to the Wallace Monument are lovely. The tent area seems to be smaller than it was when I visited about 5 years ago but there do seem to have been some improvements.
The facilities are excellent and the toilet / shower block can't really be faulted. The landscaping and plants/flowers etc all seem very well kept. There is a reception that has lots of local info but doesn't have a shop. They do offer a service to order rolls / papers etc. The local retail park is about 10 minutes away and there is a large supermarket there where you can buy everything you'd need. There's also the new Yeomans at Sterling Mills which, according to googlemaps, is only 13 mins away.
The tent area has a couple of wooden shelters with picnic tables / benches in so if it's raining you have somewhere to cook. There are also plenty of other picnic tables dotted around the field. There are some grass areas that have EHU.
There is a dog walking area at the back of the field which is excellent for walking dogs. We were told on arrival to only walk along to the left of the dog walking park as along to the right there were sheep which were lambing.
All in all this is a very well kept small(ish?) site with lovely views and excellent facilities. If there are any things that I wish this site did have it would be a shop, the toilet block closer to the tent area and maybe a nice pub within walking distance. It is a nice site though and I'll definitely be back and would recommend it to others.
We have just returned from a few days at this lovely site. The park is very clean and well maintained, very children friendly with small enclosed park which kept both my kids amused the whole time we were there.
The Toilet and Shower block was very clean and had ample toilets and showers, we didn't have to queue either mornings, the hot water was great and plenty of it, these were cleaned everyday. You can see why they won 'loo of the year'.
We got a warm and friendly welcome from the owner of the park, and although there was no shop we were asked if we wanted to order milk, rolls or papers which we did, these were all priced very reasonable. The staff were always to hand if you had any queries.
The Touring Pitches are all hard standing and very spacious. Where we were sited the road noise didn't bother us in the least, the only noise was from Jack and Jill, the two goats in the field next to us, but we didn't mind them at all as they were so cute and friendly.
We went for a walk along the road to Blairmains Farm Shop, it had a wide variety of local produce and a cafe / restaurant with prices very reasonable.
Supermarket close by (5 Mins) in car if you need more than basics.
The views of the Ochil Hills are amazing and for the fit, the climb up to the top, the views are out of this world (just don't go into the sheep field or you might get chased).
Although this was our first visit and only an hour from home, we have already booked to go back for longer in August, and hopefully a few weekends in between.
Just back from 2 nights here. It is only 30mins from our home so perfect for our first time camping with our 5 year old boy and twin girls who are 3. We went with some friends who have 3 kids too.
The site is very clean all through. Staff really friendly and efficient. Tent area really nice with lots of moveable picnic tables so we had one in between our tents. Also there are some sheltered picnic benches which we had breakfast in.
The kids took their bikes and safely peddled round the roads and to the play park. The older kids (5 & 8) went alone to the park and we thought it very safe as we were quite close but not close enough to have the little ones (age 3) nagging us to take them!
There is no shop on the site but you can order bread, milk and papers but we didn't. I am glad there is no shop as we spent next to nothing and the kids couldn't nag us for things! We had a car so a 10 minute drive to Morrisons was easy anyway.
The showers were lovely, as my first time camping I was a bit worried about them but was very impressed, lovely hot water and really warm room in fact my favourite place in the cold evenings and early mornings! I liked the touch of playing the local radio station in there so you could catch the news or weather as well as a bit of music to wake you up.
The washing up area was nice (as the men in my group told me!) there was drinking water right near us so we enjoyed lots of fresh water. We almost had all the site to ourselves (tent area that is, there were plenty of caravans).
There was loads of space for kite flying, football and other outdoor games. There is also space for kids to explore in view of the tent which was good, there is a dog walking area too if you have a dog.We had a lovely 2 days and think we were very lucky with the weather. The boys and men in our group walked up to the top of the hill and over and say next time we go back they'll go even further.
We didn't leave the site really but there is a local village with a shop and pub I think but about 2 miles away. We 'made do' with our own wine which was perfectly chilled in the evening without a cool box! There are freezers to put your ice blocks in too and a laundry.
The only thing I thought was a bit strange was that the amenity block was as far away from the tent area as it could possibly be amongst caravans who probably have their own loos and showers.
Overall we will certainly go back and would recommend it to anyone but mostly families, the kids really enjoy being at the park and riding their bikes and while we were there all the kids I encountered were lovely. It may bother some people that there is no shop but no problem for us.
There is some road noise which is a bit of a shame as it seems to go on all night. It bothered some of us more than others and it didn't really bother me. At night we heard loads of owls and some other creatures we didn't know the sound of (a Gruffalo maybe!) Also there were loads of lambs and sheep in the adjacent field who you heard now and again at night but a lot in the day much to the delight of the kids along with rabbits, squirrels and blue tits. My daughters and I were 'lucky' enough to be the first ones up both mornings we were there and enjoyed wandering about watching the world wake up.
As others have said, site was beautiful, well laid out with great scenery and a very easy entrance off the main road. There was a little road noise but we did not hear any at night. Used the convenient park and ride into Sterling. We had plenty of space on our hardstanding pitch and a good TV signal. Used the pre booking service of milk, papers and excellent bread rolls. Toilets / showers were very clean and spacious. When going to a wedding and waiting for a taxi in reception, were chatting that it was a minute or two late and the receptionist / owner? without prompting phoned the taxi office to check for us. Would definitely stay at this site again.
This is a great site for families as there is a large playground to keep them amused with climbing frames for kids of all ages.
The site is very level and the views are lovely all around, the toilet block and showers are some of the cleanest we've seen and this helps with the £5 deposit to use them which keeps the kids out when they are unsupervised. There is no actual shop on site but there is a Cafe and Coffee Shop only a mile down the road and Stirling and other small villages are close by for essentials.
The people running the site are very nice and helpful and leave you alone to enjoy yourself.
As I've stated this is a great site to take kids to and tire them out so you can relax yourself.
We only managed to stay here for one night in July. We had brilliant weather which makes a big difference. The campsite is set in a beautiful location with lovely views of the hills. Everything was kept spotless and tidy. We pitched our tent next to the playpark, which the kids were never away from. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We will definitely return to this campsite sometime soon.
