This is a commercial site ( we normally use Camping and Caravan club sites) and it was delightful.
Very quiet (no screaming chav type kids/families which are a feature on some commercial sites) - toilets and showers were spotless all the time (again unlike some commercial sites I have been on where the aforementioned chav types seem to take great delight in messing them up) and there was an excellent motor home service point. The site shop is well stocked but a little pricey, Morrisons is only just down the road in Fort William.
Reception staff are mostly foreign but are very good. The local people are friendly.
There is a restaurant and bar but it's about 200 yards down the road.
Downside? - midges, midges and more midges - that's a feature of the Scottish Highlands I'm afraid - plenty of mozzie repellent is essential.
Fantastic location at the foot of Ben Nevis. The train ride from Fort William to Mallaig is a must, the local train service is a quarter of the price of the steam train and takes exactly the same route - there is a wonderful view of the viaduct used in the Harry Potter films which the Hogwarts express goes over!
If you're going to hike up Ben Nevis then get fit! (unlike me.)
Had a two night stay here, in order to climb Ben Nevis. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. We got a nice EHU pitch which was flat and level. I was impressed by the large purpose built washroom /toilet facilities which were spotless. It rained heavily overnight but there was no flooding under our tent, drainage was good there, though there were a few boggy spots in other areas. Being such a large site there was naturally lots of activity, pleasingly this settled down around 22:30 and by 23:00 the site was peaceful. We did our own cooking, but made use of the burger van after coming down from the mountain !
A large busy site, but surprisingly quiet ( a plus point for us)
After a 3 night stay at Glen Nevis, we can only echo a lot of the other comments. Very impressive site, well run and organised. The shop was well stocked and the on site burger van was welcome, quite decent fish & chips as well. A short walk to the site pub/restaurant. Only grumble was that children are not allowed in the bar after 7pm, but they could go into the restaurant. Considering the size of the site, we were impressed by the consideration of our fellow campers. On our part of the site anyway. We never heard any noise after 11pm which was great. A great site with great facilities - highly recommended. Beware the mozzies!
We stayed here for a weekend in our motorhome with our two dogs. The only negative that I can come up with which is no fault of the park was the midges - argh! However there was solutions for that little problem available in the site shop, so it was only a minor problem. The site itself is beautifully maintained, and the pitch we had offered us plenty of privacy and quiet. Didn't use the restaurant, but the cafe shop was great, and there were seats outside where we could sit with our dogs. The toilets/showering facilities were spotless and the shop was well stocked. I would definitely return to this site and would not hesitate to recommend it as a 5 star to others.
This has to be one of the best campsites I have ever stayed on and puts many of the lake district sites to shame. If only they all put their vast amounts of profit back into their sites like this one.
Facilities:- The Staff were friendly and very helpful they also work hard to maintain and keep this place clean Absolutely spotless toilets, and showers that work, play areas for the kids, dog exercise areas. The restaurant has a reasonable menu and many meals were under £10.00 The burger van is a permanent fixture and the quality of food is what you would expect and not that expensive. If you want to do a BBQ then the Supermarket is a 30 minute walk or 5 minutes in the car. Just along the road near the camp site is a cafe that will cover lunch for you at a reasonable price. For those things we forget, the shop can cater for, including Midge nets and insect repellent, you will need it !
I am not a camping snob and can happily camp in the middle of nowhere I know the difference unlike some, but for a family holiday on this place you cant go wrong. The town has leisure centre for those really really wet days.
Pitch:- I left it far to late to book and reserve a pitch and had to go for the lucky dip. It didn't get busy until the weekend and with a minimum of four metres between tents (as directed in your welcome pack) I still didnt feel penned in. As for noise after 11pm I don't think so!. Even a quiet conversation can attract the night patrol man. Maybe just a little over zealous, Don't forget though, you are going to get the early birds who get up at the crack of dawn to climb Ben Nevis (5-6 hrs all up for the average folk up and down the donkey track. Don't try the CMD route if your not experienced)
Final score for me is 10 out of 10 I will be going back
Just back from a wonderful holiday at Glen Nevis. This site gets better each year! The facilities are spotless (the music is a nice touch) Excellent shop that seems to sell everything! and the staff were helpful and friendly. I didn't use the restaurant but other campers reckoned the food was great. I did sample the Burger van and the morning bacon roll was mouth watering. Given the size of this Park it can only be expected that it might be noisy at night (although they do have a silent time from 11-8) Unfortunately we did have a neighbour who felt obliged to share his radio with everyone well after 11pm, so a big thank you to the Warden for rectifying this (professionally!) We'll be back next year.
This site is one I have visited many times over the last few years, and it's one of the best in Scotland (Rothiemurchus being my other favourite). The setting is exquisite: at the foot of Ben Nevis, in the beautiful glen. Facilities are great too, lots of hot water, big mirrors and never a big queue. Waking up and looking up at the mountain is one of the loveliest experiences. HOWEVER. Last time I was there, which as you can see was a couple of years ago, I had a few issues which had nothing to do with the facilities or location. When you arrive you are given a list of rules. (quiet after 11, dogs on leads, no drinking while walking about, no cycling on site, space between pitches, etc).
I was irritated to find a tent very close to ours, kids cycling around, dogs on the loose and the most awful drunken noise late into the night. The warden did not throw out the offenders and I got hardly any sleep. Plus, at 4am when I visited the toilet I found a huge Alsatian right outside my tent, and being terrified of dogs I was very angry. Dogs should be ON A LEAD not wandering about in the night! Anyway I am not the sort of person to make a fuss so I put up with all this and wrote a letter to the manager when I got home. And never got a reply. I am going there again next week and this time if there are any problems I am going straight to the manager!
This is Continental style "mega-campsite". For those from these shores it can be a bit of a different experience from the typical British camping experience. The facilities are excellent and of very high quality, well maintained and staffed. There is a shop on site and several pubs and restaurants in walking distance. The morning views up Ben Nevis are needless to say spectacular. Getting the bus from the YHA you can go further down the Glen to see the meeting of the waters. As several reviewers have pointed out, a campsite of this size in such a popular location is prone to noise problems (bring ear plugs!). Also, this site charges on the basis of tent and pitch size as well as persons (a common policy on the continent) making it rather expensive for a lone camper.
I am just back from a wonderful 5 nights spent at Glen Nevis and have to say that I am very impressed with the site. The facilities are excellent with clean and numerous showers/loos (with a nice touch of piped Radio 2 to hide those awkward noises!), a fantastic shop with all those forgottten necessities and food, and the best part of all the absolutely fantastic staff who worked there. Throughout they made us feel very welcome and were always helpful.
The site itself is in a glorious location with awsome scenery and a pub and restaurant that form part of the site are less than 5 mins away. Only minor negative was that the bar closes at 1045 each night but this is in support of the site's 'no noise' policy after 1100.
I would thoroughly recommend this site to all and will definitely stay there if up that way again. If you do make it, a trip up 'The Ben' is a must as the views are amazing!
Last time we were here I was pregnant and it was a little cold at night! Myself, my partner and our two kids and our third stay. The site is clean, friendly, has spectacular views. One of the things people from further south may notice, which freaked me out a bit, was how it doesn't seem to get dark during the summer. Just a very long twilight followed by dawn! If you are not prepared for this, it can make for a very bad nights sleep. The shop is well equipped, clean and well maintained toilet/shower block.
We have visited this site, purely just to visit Fort William and also as a stop over to visit further north onto Inverness.
My daughter has plans to climb the Ben so we will undoubtedly be back!
In my view this site sets the 'Gold Standard' of all campsites for hikers / campers and I use it as a yardstick to judge other sites by!
I am not sure that it would be a great family holiday site but as a base for climbing Nevis or doing other activities in the area it is absolutely awesome.
We stayed early season 2007 and I was really impressed by everything on the site - the pitches were flat and plentiful and not too cramped (although it wasn't very busy) and the facilities were absolutely superb. Loads of blocks, all clean, modern and large enough to cope with a busy site.
Showers are fantastic as are the washing up facilities. The shop on site is very well stocked and the staff everywhere are friendly. There is even a pub next door for a good feed and drink when you're finished walking.
As with everywhere in Scotland I imagine it would be a nightmare for midges in the summer months but early season it wasn't a problem. Wardens enforced the quiet rule at night so we could get some decent sleep.
(Tip for any experienced walkers: if you're going to do Nevis make sure you go up via the Carn Mor Dearg ridge walk and not the tourist route - it is well worth the hard slog to start with and the views of Nevis on the way up are among the best views I've ever experienced. Casual walkers stick to the tourist route!)
3 tents, me, the wife, 3 kids plus 2 dogs. Only stayed here two nights, climbing Ben nevis as part of our slow "3 peaks" challenge. Campsite is great, well within walking distance of Fort William, and if your not up to it after doing "the Ben", pub with good food within staggering distance. Dog walking field, not that my 2 were up to much, toilets fine. Shop above average too, with good OS maps and guides.
Only thing which spoiled my time was a group of neds, obviously arriving from a 3 o clock finish in Fort William, carrying on the party until 0530. The whole site was rewarded, however, at 0730 in the morning, by the site of the warden and one helper pouring a bucket of water over their Barbecue and chucking them out! Well done! Will be back
I stayed here in September with my family , it is a very well maintained site for one so large, nice clean toilet blocks with free showers,a well stocked shop that was reasonably priced and a pub just off the edge of the park(i did not try the pub , but looked in and it seemed very nice).the best feature in my opinion ,was to look out of my window straight at the foothills of Ben Nevis.Fort William is within walking distance and is a quaint little town,i can recommend the haggis suppers at the local chippie .From here we went to skye via the mallaig ferry and back over the bridge at kyleakin, this is a trip everyone should take at least once ,the scenery is stunning and worth the mileage .this is a great site for touring the caledonian canal to Inverness or over to Aviemore . or back to the trossachs. All this from a clean well lit site with friendly staff, what more could i want, maybe move it a bit closer to Oxford
My friend and I stayed at this campsite during the first week of the summer holidays to do some walking in the Lochaber region. On the whole we were both extremely impressed by the site and would probably say that it has the best facilities of any campsite we have stayed on.
The location of the campsite is ideal for those who enjoy walking, being at the foot of Ben Nevis and surrounded by other interesting hills to explore. The campsite is a fair distance away from Fort William which, for a town that markets itself as being the 'Outdoor Capital of the UK', was a bit of a let down to be honest. There is a Morrisons, a Tesco Metro, McDonalds, Brewer's Fayre type pub/restaurant and plenty of pubs in the town, but the place felt distinctly run down in our opinion. There were a few outdoor shops scattered around and prices varied considerably in them so I would suggest you shop around before buying anything.
The site itself was well laid out and even though it was busy for the whole week it never felt particularly crowded. There were plenty of facilities to go around, although there was a bit of a wait for a shower at peak times in the morning. The site had a well stocked shop which sold food, alcohol and camping gear and there was plenty of information about the local area available in the reception next door. There was a burger van on site that opened for breakfast at 8.00am and also sold snacks in the evening. We felt it was probably too far to walk into Fort William in the evening so we went to the site's own bar and restaurant, which was a short walk away. The food served there seemed quite appealing but was a little on the expensive side. The bar stopped serving at 10.45pm, which encouraged people to return to the site at a reasonable time and the 'no noise after 11.00pm' rule seemed fairly well inforced, with the gates to the site being shut to cars at 11.00pm also.
One of the few faults we could pick with the site were the number of midges, which were mainly a problem in the morning and early evening. My friend came home absolutely covered in midge bites, so I would advise long trousers and sleeves at these times of the day. The bins were emptied frequently during our stay but there were a number of times when the bin truck was left parked close to tents for quite long periods of time and absolutely stunk the place out. A number of pitches were particularly close to what seemed to be a water treatment facility which made a loud humming noise constantly and would certainly have driven me mad if we had pitched near to it.
It would be possible to start a walk to the top of Ben Nevis from the campsite itself, although my friend and I chose to walk up it a via a more challenging route along the Carn Mor Dearg arete, after parking near the golf course in Fort William. On other days we parked further along Glen Nevis and walked around the Ring of Steall and up Stob Ban. We also had a drive out to Glen Coe and walked along Buachaille Etive Mor. When we were not walking we took a boat ride along Loch Linnhe and a cable car up Aonach Mor, where there is an excellent downhill mountain bike course.
In conclusion we would highly recommend this site because of its excellent facilities and peaceful location.
We travelled around Scotland for a week and stayed at Glen Nevis for two nights. It was by far the best site we stayed on. The facilities were excellent, clean and spacious showers and toilets and well heated. Hair dryers were also available free of charge. There was plenty of room to have our own private area and we were able to choose which field we wanted to stay on. The no noise after 11pm is excellent as you don't have to worry about other people keeping you awake and after a long day you know you will get a good nights sleep. The staff were friendly, especially in the on site restaurant. We had a three course meal for two with drinks and it cost just under £50, a really lovely finish to the day. There is a well stocked shop on site as well and a hot food van selling breakfasts and snacks. The views are amazing even in the rain. I would definitely recommend this site and we look forward to visiting it again. It is a good base for walkers of all levels and £12 a night is not a bad price for the quality of the facilities available to use. There are also laundry facilities, with the tumble dryer costing £1.20.
