Just back from a week at Tregarton Park. Overall a lively park with some great amenities most suited to families.
Pitches are average size. Most people had space for large tent or caravan with porch or awning + vehicle and a space to sit out, but not much more than this. All pitches are numbered and have nearby access road. Great if it’s wet. There is some useful landscaping between pitches. Ground was medium firm.
We were at the top part of the site near the tennis courts. I hadn't realised quite how near the playground would be but this turned out to be a positive for our children and I could let my 4 year old go in have some freedom whilst watching from afar. The playground was locked up at 9pm which is a good thing but the kids then hang around on the grass next to the playground, sometimes up to 10. 30pm for the older ones. I guess they have to go somewhere. After this time the park was completely quiet.
The facilities are very good with a rabbit warren of facilities in the Ladies (which seems to be a similar arrangement in the Gents, from what I could tell). There were 5 showers in the ladies with mops to clean up afterwards. The showers have glass doors on them giving you a separate area to dry off etc. They are a bit small for taking children into and there are no Family bathrooms at this site which I feel they could address. Hooks were at a premium. There was only one private basin cubicle but an area of 5 basins away from main toilet area, used for brushing teeth etc. The floors were often very wet and extremely slippery. They could do with a large mat at the entrance. A second toilet block would also be useful, though the site was full and there were minimal queues.
There is a path to toilet block, wash up area, shop and pool area where everyone has to funnel up together. It’s awkward if you meet a larger person carrying a load of washing up stuff coming the other way as there is really not enough room to pass! Washing up areas are adequate, though have obviously been a haven for birds at some point as you can see the odd bird deposit in there, which is not ideal.
The shop is quite basic, I was hoping for better to be honest. The usual tinned goods are on offer but we arrived with little food, late on a Sunday afternoon so had to cobble together something. We would have liked some fresh vegetables. There is a well landscaped area where you can sit and have coffee, though the large wall between there and the pool meant there was no view. The pool area is very nice, we only used the pool once due to changeable weather and just being holiday-busy. It is well used and is obviously a key attraction to the site.
The location is nice though it is a little hard to reach. We popped to Porthluney Cove one evening and saw some really big rolling waves. Other places we went to included Charlestown, Mevagissey, Fowey and Falmouth. It has quaint fishing towns in abundance! We went to the Heligan farm shop which was very nice, though very expensive. We considered a visit to Eden, having been before we had children many years ago. After mulling over the near £60 entrance cost for 4 of us (including one under 5 who we wouldn’t have to pay for!) we gave it a miss.
We have enjoyed our time at Tregarton Park. I would recommend it to families but would not choose this site if to visit as a couple.
Just been on our 2nd visit to this excellent site. Nothing bad to say, lovely owners who pitch your outfit, excellent pitches, clean toilets/showers well kept pot washing area, lovely heated swimming pool & sun lounger area lovely park for the kids & tennis court. Excellent shop & a brilliant take a way food service. Would recommend this site to anyone thinking about visiting cornwall. 2 nice beaches at gorran & caerhays close by. Cant wait to go back again
We've just returned from 2 weeks at this lovely camp site. Unusually for us, we chose to visit the same site for the 2nd year running. We wouldn't normally go back to the same site but we had nothing negative about our stay last year so when we decided to go away with friends it made sense to suggest Tregarton Park again. I reviewed the site in full this time last year. This year's visit was very similar - the pitches are still well maintained, facilities are kept spotless and the staff and owners are a credit to the site. The shop and takeaway still offer good value. There are slight changes to the pool area this year. Gone is the old decking and replaced by a seating area under 2 huge parasols. The couple of times we used the pool the seating area wasn't very busy - perhaps coincidence or maybe that the chairs in this area are not particularly comfortable? A point to mention about the pool. I don't recall last year there being swimming lessons taking place, but this year at least 2 times during our stay (once at around 4pm and the other time in the morning) the pool was suddenly invaded it seemed by a mass of over excited children! Of course, because the pool is fairly shallow there will always be predominantly children having fun in it. The afternoon I witnessed a lesson, it seemed a little unorganised and took over half of the pool. This is not necessarily a criticism just an observation.
We stayed on pitch 99 this year - a huge pitch. We have an 8 metre long tent, large windbreak, washing line, trailer and car. There was still plenty of room with all of our gear. Our friend's were on the pitch next to us and we also pitched a gazebo between the 2 pitches - this proved invaluable with the intense heat of our first week. These pitches are on a slight slope however, so be prepared. Fortunately our table was able to have one leg adjusted to accommodate this and also our cupboards have adjustable legs. We did move the bed 3 times though before we were comfortable! I would recommend these pitches for the location and size, despite the slight slope.
There are still the inconsiderate campers - from those not mopping out showers to a family who chose to light a fire 'pit' one evening. We were so concerned as we could see cinders spark from this, that my husband went up to their pitch with a fire extinguisher! Considering the dry, hot weather this could have easily sparked off a fire. We did mention it to the owner the next day who stated he would have a look and possibly have a word with the pitch concerned.
Beware of the shower/toilet block floor if wearing regular flit flops - it is very slippery. I'm sure there may be a sign warning of slippery surface but I had to make sure I wore specific footwear and not flit flops. I heard the slippery floor comment several times.
Because of the fantastic weather and our visit the previous year we mainly had relaxing beach days. Caerhays is sandy, shallow water and a big plus it is only a few minutes away from the site. We also visited Porthpean beach near Pentewan. This was coarser sand and a steeper incline into the water. The car park is a bit of a trek away - not good if you have a bundle of stuff to carry. Claim to fame here - Dame Judi Dench was on the beach the same day, relaxing like everyone else.
We ate out a few times - in the Sharks Fin and also Harbour Inn in Mevagissey, the Water Wheel in St Austell, Sam's Bistro in Fowey, and the Rashleigh Arms in Polkerris - all very good and reasonably priced.
In summary Tregarton Park has a good reputation and rightly so. They clearly work very hard to maintain the standards. It's a pity I can't pick up the site and relocate to another part of Cornwall/UK as although it is situated in a lovely area there is too much more to see to justify returning there in the near future. If you choose to stay here you will not be disappointed.
There are many good things I'd like to say about this site but they have mostly been said already. However, this was our first visit to Cornwall and we weren't quite sure what to expect, well we needn't have worried as the whole experience was just great and we will certainly be going back again.
In places the narrow winding road from St Austell to Pentewan needs a bit of extra care especially if you meet a bus coming the other way and whatever you do, don't overshoot the right turn at the top of the hill, (there is a brown tourist attraction type sign bur Tregarton is near the bottom of it) and tow your outfit down into Mevagissey as the streets are very narrow.
Once on site the site owner's son and a hard working star in my opinion, will show you to your pitch and in no time at all will level the van for you. One bit of hassle out of the way and a step nearer to getting the kettle on.
The people and the ambiance on site was extremely friendly and most of the folk that we spoke to have been coming back for years, some many times a year and I can see why. An excellent base to visit attractions from as nowhere is very far away.
Many book there next year's stay in advance when they are there and that way they can not only ensure the pitch they like but get it at this year's prices.
This site is now our staple destination for half term and summer holidays. The site is immaculate full stop. Well tended borders, regularly mowed lawns and pitches (when not occupied of course), spotless toilets and showers (all of which are hot and very modern) and wide spacious pitches that are so well positioned, even when full, the campsite feels quite the opposite. I think the family team that look after this concern, and they have been there for 17 years thus far, tick all the boxes from a customer service perspective. Always ready to help and listen, they have over the years we have visited carefully tweaked and refined to the point where the pool area in particular is a joy to behold - and when the sun shines you could literally be in Portugal. Another big win is the well maintained and well stocked park area for the young ones. Fully enclosed by a post and rail fence so adults can keep an eye out, it is easily the one my kids prefer of the competitors year in/year out.
Prices in the shop and takeaway are what I would consider to be excellent value. It would be easy for the owners to inflate prices given that it is a fair few miles to the nearest supermarket, though they take the opposing view that it is better to encourage people back with a fair tarrif - and at 60p for a home baked croissant, or £2. 75 for a delicious 1/4 cheeseburger at the poolside - on that score they get my vote!
The close proximity of the great beaches at Gorran and Caire Hayes added the finishing touches to what is a beautiful site, well run and excellent value for money. We are due to visit twice again this year - and we can't wait.
What a super site! Stayed for the first two weeks of September, and didn't want to leave. We were put onto a different pitch than that requested, because our chosen pitch had been damaged by the wet summer, and instead given hard standing. Our unit was parked and levelled for us! Electric points were well placed, and seemed to be on every third pitch in our section. Both fresh and grey water points were within the section (the site is organised into a number of sections, so we always felt part of a smaller group), and chemical waste disposal was at the toilet/shower/laundry complex. The toilets and showers were superb, and neither my wife nor I ever had to queue. We didn't use the pool, which was open for the first week of our stay, but it looked clean and inviting. The whole site was kept spotlessly clean. The shop had all the basics we needed. At St. Ewe, about a mile away, is a brilliant pub, The Crown, which serves good food at reasonable prices. All in all we had a restful stay on a very peaceful site, and can thoroughly recommend it.
Stayed at the park mid August. A popular campsite with families. The pool was great but full of children understandably and so did not appeal to our 2 teenagers. The site is extremely well maintained and could find absolutely no fault on that score. The showers and toilets are clean and well looked after.
We were in a pitch that was a long way from the facilities so at times could have done with toilets a bit nearer. However we chose the pitch deliberately so that was our fault! Unfortunately our pitch was on a slope and this seemed to dominate our holiday as we were always trying to deal with this problem! We were in a quiet secluded part of the camp which was was good. My only complaint was our pitch. All the surrounding ones looked to have been levelled off but ours unfortunately had been left for some reason. We spent ages debating where to place the tent when we arrived to deal with the slope!
We visited Tregarton for 7 nights in Aug 2012. I cannot speak highly enough for how friendly and hospitable the staff are. They really go out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable and do what they can to help with any queries or niggles you may have. We went as a family group including children aged 4, 6 & 7 and they absolutely loved the heated pool. The Park was also fun, but had lots of teenagers hanging around in the evenings.
The showers & toilet were kept spotless and were generally available without queueing.
The food from the take away was excellent and very good value for money.
Now the down side - We had pitch 132 which was toward the bottom end of the campsite. Whilst sheltered from any wind, it is also very low and due to the very heavy rain the days preceeding our visit the pitch was a mud bath. I feel that it would be beneficial to put sand or sawdust on such pitches before making them available to use, as it felt like we were standing in / on a puddle. The other issue with the pitch being at the low end of the site and having cows in the field next door is the smell that rises up when the ground becomes muddy. This is very unpleasant.
On the whole I would happily go back to Tregarton, but would opt for a pitch on a higher part of the site to avoid the mud and smell we experienced.
Excellent site on the whole, owner was very helpful and friendly, old guy in the shop was a bit miserable. Queued for showers a few times when it was busy and our pitch turned into a quagmire after the unseasonable rainfall, needed 4x4 to get out, worst summer in 20 years apparently. Excellent shop and heated pool, take away was average. Good for younger kids with outdoor play area and pool, not so hot for teens. A good base location for exploring Cornwall. We're going back to France this year but will definitely look at Tregarton again when we next do Cornwall.
A nice large site with heated pool (did not use) shops and cafe.
If you like large busy sites for you and you kids then this site is 5 star. If like us you have no kids and want peace then this is not for you.
It has great facility's through out but as being a busy site the showers get very busy.
The staff are very nice and helpful. The grounds when you enter are very pretty. Very well keep land. There are water taps everywhere and a area for motorhomes where you can park, empty Gray waste, top up water and other.
What can we say except this is a really Wonderful site. Lovely laid out pitches with plenty of space.
Easy access for towing and owners offered to put our van on pitch and level it.
The best shower cubicles we have ever seen, plenty of room and nicely enclosed.
Pool is a great asset and the kids loved it, as is the play area, wonderful enclosed safe park with something for kids from toddler to 11-12 year old. Pool locked up at 7pm and the park at 9pm which we thought was a good idea as it helped with settling the kids at night and kept the noise down.
Shop very reasonable and next to the pool, great to grab a coffee and snack. Take away has a fab menu and is well priced. Loved the freshly baked croissants in the mornings.
Overall this a wonderful site, the owners are very friendly and work around the clock to keep this site first class.
We visited Tregarton Park for 7 nights at the end of July, and had a wonderful time. Our whole experience of the site, from the online booking to our departure was very positive.
The toilets/showers were well laid out, well maintained and cleaned regularly. The swimming pool was a great hit with the whole family, particularly my little boy, and the surrounding seating area was very pleasant for spectating!
Our little boy adored the playground which was suitable for a range of ages. The site shop was well stocked, and the takeaway was very popular.
Tregarton Park is some distance away from most local amenities ie pubs etc, probably too far to walk, but it was only a short drive and didn't bother us at all.
We are already planning/hoping to return next year!
We were due at Tregarton Park for 12 nights from 15th July. Our trip had been booked back in February and we had originally chosen pitch 131 for it’s slightly more secluded location. However, in the few weeks before there was some very wet weather and we knew beforehand that it was unlikely our preferred pitch would be available.
It was right at the bottom of the site and also no road ran through this area, so had become very wet. When we arrived we were given the choice of another 4 pitches and it was suggested we have a drive around to see which one we wanted to go for. After a couple of circuits we decided on pitch 28 which was in the top right hand corner of the campsite.
It was a very large corner pitch, quite near the tennis courts, but seemed to be in a nice location. Another factor that made us decide on this pitch was that if we had a lot of further wet weather we were at the top and in effect water would not collect here.
The pitches were well kept, level, and with some bushes and hedges which gave a degree of privacy between pitches. A word of warning though, our EHU only just reached (it is standard length).
In the ladies toilet block there were 5 showers (if memory serves correct), each with 2 double hooks, fold down seat and a hand rail in the cubicle for those that needed it. They did vary in size slightly but were on the roomy side.
They were closed between 12 – 1 for cleaning with a temporary toilet (porta loo) available during this time. Cleaning staff were also around in the evening and morning doing a quick mop around etc. It certainly was an endless task for them, especially in our 2nd week when the site was 99% full and there were lots of children on site.
There were at least 2 mop and buckets so there was no excuse for campers not to mop out.
The on site shop stocked any essentials one might need, reasonably priced, and also sold newspapers. During the summer holidays it is open all day but times vary outside this. There is also a take away (located in the shop) where you can order from quite a varied menu – from burgers, pizza, to curry or chilli. We used it twice – the first time we had a burger, chips and onion rings – tasty and good value. The 2nd time we had a 10” meat supreme pizza. I thought this was very poor as certainly the menu stated pepperoni and spicy beef (may have been another meat but I can’t be sure). There was only evidence of pepperoni, tomato and a smattering of cheese and I thought it was poor value for money. You can also order rolls, ciabatta and baguettes the day before. These were lovely, and reasonably priced. The take away is open at set times for breakfast baps, lunch and dinner. There are some outside tables and chairs by the takeaway if you wanted to eat here.
We used the pool a couple of time to cool off. It wasn’t really big enough to swim in as it was mainly full of children splashing around and generally having fun but it certainly worked for a quick cool off. There are a few sun loungers and lots of wooden bench seating with parasols for shade.
The current price for the laundrette is £4 per wash which include washing detergent. Tumble dryers are a minimum of 60p and generally to dry a wash load it will cost £1.
We don’t have children so didn’t take much notice of the play area but there was a lot of noise coming from it when we passed so I’m guessing it was popular!
Tregarton Park is a lovely site. The owners and staff are all very pleasant and work extremely hard to ensure everywhere is well maintained.
Only a few minutes drive away is Lobbs Farm Shop. It’s open 7 days a weeks and has a good selection of products, especially on the butcher counter. We went here 4 times, bought bacon, steak, lamb, bugers and sausages and also some deli stuff. Not particularly cheap but good quality.
There are a few pubs quite near by (not walking distance though). We tried The Crown at St Ewe. I think this has recently changed hands as when I commented on their sea food platter which I had read about online, the waitress said they had changed hands and no longer did this. We had lunch there and I would say it was fair.
Mevagissey is a short drive away and there are pubs, restaurants and fish and chips shops – something for everyone. We ate at the Harbour Tavern, good food and reasonably priced. There are many villages and towns further afield.
A favourite of ours was Fowey, approximately 30 minutes away. A very pretty town but beware parking is at the top of the town and it is a very steep and long climb for the walk back up!
There is a mini bus transfer (for a charge) which runs from the main car park down to the harbour. We had our best meal of the holiday here at Sams Bistro. The food was superb. We opted for the seafood feast – scallops, mussels, red mullet, prawns, calamari, sardines, all served with a salad, home made coleslaw and French bread. Even the salad was delicious – mixed leaves, cucumber sticks, red onion, tomato, sugar snap peas, bean sprouts. If you are not too keen on fish, there are lots of other options. Please ensure you go there hungry as the portions are very generous.
There are a few nearby sandy beaches – Caerhays was our nearest favourite (10 minutes drive). The sand was soft, level access and a reasonably priced car park. There are also toilets and a sanck bar/café.
The nearest major town is St Austell, approximately 20 minutes away. There is an Asda and Tesco here.
This was our first venture into Cornwall and we were recommended this site by my Sister and her Husband. We have visited many sites around the UK and we must say that we were really taken back by this site. Fantastic welcome, Easy booking it. Well laid out and the customer services cannot be beaten. Site was perfect and facilities fantastic. A special mention to Rob who sited our caravan.
The toilet block and showers were the best I have seen.
The weather was not kind to us over the period but never the less we had a really peaceful and enjoyable break. ,
Not a site I would recommend for the more grown up kids as there is no entertainment except Tennis court and children's play area. Smaller kids would enjoy it.
Shop could do with stocking up on more items but the food was nice. The pool warm.
Wonderful Pub about 2 miles away ' The Crown' at St. Ewe which serves a fantastic Carvery on Sunday Lunchtimes as well as good beer and friendly staff.
We chose this site for our first ever week-long camping holiday (Jubilee week) for a few reasons, but mainly because it has received so many good reviews. Here's another one:
You could say that the site is divided into two sections, the top field is very flat and quite open and is where the tennis court and play area are located. This is where the majority of families were pitched and seemed quite lively through the day with lots of children joining in with football etc, not near any tents or vans though so they're safe from damage. It wasn't in any way noisy or rowdy, just good fun with kids doing what kids should be doing on their holiday. The bottom half of the site is sloped and divided into smaller fields (or meadows as they're called), with well-designed terracing providing level pitches for everyone. This area is perhaps more private and quieter and also more protected from strong winds, which was a bonus for us while we were there as the weather was awful some days.
In all cases your pitch is clearly defined by shrubbery and/or fencing so there is no intrusion from neighbors guylines etc. You don't feel isolated though, they've managed to get the balance between privacy and community right and everything quietened down by 10. 00pm. All pitches are large and have EHU and there are plenty of water/rubbish stations dotted around the site which were constantly being attented to. We didn't once see an overflowing bin even though the site was full.
The toilet block can only be described as spotless. Plenty of cubicles and showers meant we didn't have to wait, and they were cleaned often and with care. This is a vital part of a holiday experience and Tregarton Park obviously recognise this and provide a service accordingly. Top marks here.
The swimming pool was clean and warm, even on days when the weather was bad we enjoyed a swim then braved nature's natural cold air dryer back to the tent. There are changing rooms by the pool but it seemed easier (and funnier) to run back to the kettle and a warming cuppa. There is a large area within the walled pool area with tables/parasols which on nice days would be lovely to sit around. The shop was manned by a very likeable chap who always had time for a chat. We used their takeaway service twice and the food was very nice, good portions and extremely good value. Actually the shop itself was very good value, having a good range of food/drink etc at surprisingly good prices.
We travelled through the night from Durham to get there and arrived in the area at approximately 8. 00am. One thing that was strange was that having parked in Mevagissey we couldn't find anywhere open to get some breakfast, there were plenty of cafe's but they didn't open until 10. 00am which seems a bit odd. We gave up and walked around for a while, tired and hungry until eventually I decided to try my luck at the campsite. They very kindly allowed us onto our pitch early and so we were pitched, sorted and ready for our holiday by noon.
The site is a little remote, and it is a narrow road to walk along to get to the pub/off-site walks etc with fast traffic to content with but this doesn't detract from how good this site is.
I have only one minor gripe with the site. They have gone to a lot of effort and expense to create a lovely little area in between the pool complex and the shop which is now occupied with tables and chairs etc. I watched the progress of this on their facebook page and looked forward to having a coffee/read the paper while the kids played in the pool. They appear to have banned dogs from this area however even though there is a 6 foot wall between here and the pool complex, so in effect they have excluded a large part of their customer base from this really nice facility. Either myself or my wife would have had to stay at the tent with the dog so we didn't bother using this area. It's their choice and I respect that, but they encourage dog owners to stay at this wonderful site and this seems out of character and un-necessarily 'ruley'. It could be a really good money earner on nice days, it didn't spoil the holiday though.
I loved it here, I'll go again and will recommend it to anyone who will listen.
