Got back at the weekend from 12 nights at this campsite. We had an amazing time!
The campsite is on a slight slope but nothing that a little adjustment to the level of kitchens etc can not sort out.
We had quite a bit of rain overnight or in the mornings but the site drained really well, we had no problems at all with boggy areas!
The toilet blocks are kept very clean and well stocked with toilet rolls and soap. There are several toilets and three showers, the site did get quite busy at times, but we never had to queue for showers or toilets. The showers are 50p and the water can be a little brown especially after heavy rain, but the water is always hot! There is a plug Socket in the Ladies which can be used for 50p or a hair dyer for 20p.
We didn't buy much from the shop however when we did venture in it always seemed well stocked. You can freeze your Iceblocks in the main reception at 20p a block which goes to the mountain rescue.
We walked into Keswick just about everyday, it is a lovely walk with some wonderful views of Catbells and Derwent water. It took us around half an hour with two kids in tow! From this path you can also walk along to Ashness Bridge. There are various walks from the campsite such as Castlerigg stone circle, Walla Crag etc also plenty of walks from Keswick itself, we only used the car a couple of times.
In Keswick there are plenty of shops and pubs, we visited the Oddfellows and Keswick lodge for meals we found both to be excellant value for money and served lovely food. There are also two supermarkets Booths and Co-op.
We also got a day hopper for the bus and went to Buttermere for the day was a great bus ride especially over Honister Pass! It cost just over £17 for Two adults and one child (fours and under are free)
All in all we loved our stay and will probably be back when we have explored more of Cumbria.
Well maintained campsite, with a shop on site with the basics or Keswick shops a half hour walk away.
Shower and loo facilities clean and tidy, but a shower is 50p for 3. 5 minutes, so can get expensive.
Great views of the Lake District from most parts of the campsite.
Many walks off the campsite e. G. Walla Cragg, the Stone Circles or the walk into Keswick straight from the campsite entrance and well sign posted by public footpath finger posts.
Very quiet site in terms of traffic noise as it is located up a lane about 500m from the main road (Keswick to Ambleside), and also the 10. 30 noise curfew keeps the racket down!
Positives for this site: it's in a great location, really beautiful with great views of the surrounding countryside. It'd be a fantastic place to camp if you're planning on walking, and it's in easy walking distance of Keswick (if you don't mind the big uphill climb back) and the Castlerigg stone circle.
There's also a cafe on site which looked nice but can't comment on the food as we didn't use it (it did look expensive though), and there's a teeny tiny pub just down the road if you fancy a beer, which opens after 18:30.
Owners were friendly, and the shop well stocked. The silence after 10:30pm rule was broadly enforced, though on the windiest night we did hear people talking as late as 3am - fortunately they were quieter than the wind!
Despite these positives, I wouldn't be inclined to return to the site. We camped over a busy bank holiday weekend and the campsite was soon full. I felt the site was overcrowded (normally we're asked to camp at least 6 mtrs from the next tent but no such rule was in place here) which left the children with nowhere really to play, especially as there are no park facilities on site.
Owners didn't seem to care too much about maintaining the grass - this was cut but left yellowed in places and no problem with pitching a tent over already damaged grass.
The ground is very stony; we had real trouble pitching the tent and this caused us problems when the wind picked up on the second night because we weren't able to pitch the guy ropes in a good position (because we simply couldn't sink the pegs) this didn't give the tent much stability in the wind and consequently we spent much of our second night awake and retightening the guy ropes.
We also ended up with a broken tent pole, which wasn't fantastic either. Had we been able to pitch the tent more securely, I'm sure this wouldn't have been the case.
Obviously the site isn't to blame for the weather, but I think it's important to know if you're camping in a tent that the site is very exposed, mainly sloping and has a hard core of stone about 2 inches below the surface which makes it very difficult to pitch a tent securely.
Probably the biggest issue for us, however, was the sparsity of facilities on site. In the ladies there were only 3 showers and 6 toilets - one of the showers wasn't working - over the bank holiday weekend this was totally inadequate and there were constant queues for the showers and at peak times queues for the toilets.
I also found that towards the end of the day some of the toilets ran out of paper, one time when we visited the toilets during the night 3 of the 6 toilets were without paper. In the men's there were 4 showers, 3 urinals and 2 cubicles. Again, in peak times this is just totally insufficient.
Facilities were clean, but otherwise inadequate. Again, this might be due more to overcrowding on site.
Overall it is a nice campsite but with some serious flaws if you're planning to camp in a tent.
This site has to be one of the best (if not the best) for all round views of the area.
The owners are very pleasant and helpful. There is a warden on site at all times and was very helpful in guiding us onto our pitch.
The whole site is very clean and well maintained.
There is a small charge of fifty pence for a shower and well worth it. In most sites around the area you have to keep pressing a button every five or ten seconds which is a bit of a pain.
There are some really nice walks in the area and two or three different paths you can take to get into Keswick from the site. It may be an uphill walk back but it feels great (for us over sixties) when we've done it. There's always the bus as an alternative.
An excellent all round site, has everything you could need for a very enjoyable holiday.
Have already booked up for a few days in August and can't wait.
Our first visit herealthough been to lakes and Keswick loads of times. Phoned ahead to make sure there was space. Arrived and was shown to pitch after the site rules were explained to us.
Lovely site with good facilities, myself and my Labrador shared a breakfast at the Hayloft, good food but maybe a bit expensive. Good walk down to Keswick for the able bodied a 'warming' walk back up again.
Many paths to walk not far from the site and is quite central for all of northern lakes. Something different is Threlkeld Quarry Museum. History of Quarrying in the Lake District. Worth a look.
Site is sloping and could be very exposed if wind is from the wrong direction but we had no trouble(not compared to some Scottish sites).
Staff helpful but will enforce site rules.
To sum up. A good site with good facilities (even the peaty water). It wasn't full when we were there but I think it would be cramped during the height of summer.
Beautiful views from the campsite. Excellent facilities. Good toilet and shower facilities although you pay 50p for a 3 minute shower but it was nice and warm.
The shop sells everything you could possibly need. Good laundry facilities £2 a wash and 20p for 5 minutes for the dryer. It was very useful to have laundry facilities when it poured down all weekend.
There was a excellent café. Both Bacon Sandwiches and the steak and chips were delicious and reasonably priced.
Have already recommended site to friends and family and I would definitely stay here again.
We arrived on a surprisingly sunny March afternoon, it was the first day of the season for the site and a few people had already arrived. Although there was another site down the road which looked like it had more facilities we really wanted to try this one, we were not disappointed.
On arrival we were told that there was a special offer which was great as we were on a budget, the lady who met us in the Reception was really friendly and explained where all the facilities were, she also said we were able to pitch anywhere although they do ask that you don't drive all over the field to choose your spot, which in my opinion was very reasonable to preserve the grass. We were also told that normally we would need to vacate by 11.30 but as it was not particularly busy we could stay until 5.30pm.
The site does have a slight slope and we pitched on it although it did not make a great deal of difference. The views were brilliant! There is a silence rule from 10.30pm until 7.30am which everyone adhered to. The site is located close to the Stone Circle and it is a lovely walk from the site to the circle and into Keswick.
Unfortunately the Hayloft was not open although we would have loved to have tried it. There is a small pub (very small) attached to the nearby hotel which serves meals, we didn't eat there but the meals looked good. The prices were a little steep at £4 for a pint of cider, but it was a pleasant atmosphere.
The shower block was clean with plenty of showers and toilets, the showers were lovely and hot, 50p for 3.5mins. There was also a plug for a hairdryer at 50p or the built in hairdryers were 20p, but not that good. The dish washing area was good, although the water was really hot! The shop is small with limited opening hours, although this could have been due to the quiet season.
The site is well kept and has beautiful views. A number of people from the site down the road commented that they would have preferred to stay here despite the extra facilities they had available to them.
We would definitely be back however with the no booking rule it might be a problem as I can see this site being very busy and we would not normally arrive until after 8pm, it is on a 1st come 1st served basis.
The site we booked was flooded so we looked for higher ground and found Caslerigg Farm. In every direction the views from this site are spectacular, the autumn colours were fantastic. All caravan pitches were on grass and some pitches were sloping but as seasoned caravaners we soon had the caravan level and the site owners were very accommodating and provide blocks but we didn't need them as it wasn't a problem.
Considering other sites in the area were partially flooded or bogy we found the ground conditions at Castlerigg Farm much dryer than we expected and the owners had looked after the grass so everything was nice and tidy. The water on site had a brownish tinge but all drinking taps had signs explaining that the water came from the mountains and due to high rainfall it was discoloured, this could be a shock to people who are on mains water but we didn't find it a problem as our water at home comes from the hills and we are used to it.
The facilities were lovely and clean, power showers which were lovely to step in to on a cold morning, hairdryers, laundry facilities and a small shop. We had two meals in the Hayloft Cafe, the food was excellent and the lovely old building had a log fire which was very inviting. The staff on site and in the cafe were very friendly and happy to gave us information about local walks which meant we didn't need to use the car.
The owners like to keep the site quiet after 10.30pm and all visitors seemed to agree with it, we did, we enjoyed the quiet, its a lovely site.
Well run site which we intend to return to next year.
A nice looking site with stunning views from every angle. Unfortunately, the caravan field was on a slope and we had much difficulty getting our caravan level, we had to jack it up to get enough height to level it! The result was a huge step in and out the caravan. We were ready to go home on the first day. The showers were not great, and towards the end of our stay, they took about a minute to heat up then it got so hot you could hardly stay under it and the hot/cold regulator didn't seem to work. The water was brown and smelled. We couldn't drink it so had to keep buying water although there were notices saying it was safe to drink.
Keswick is a beautiful town which we like very much. Didn't do much walking this time but were told of some good walks by the wardens which we would have liked to do, had time allowed. On the plus side, they offered storage for our bikes which gave us peace of mind. The 10.30 pm rule was adhered to mostly except on our last night, we heard noises after 1 am when it sounded like someone was pitching a tent. We discovered in the morning 2 new tents and a campervan. The gate is supposed to be locked at around 10 pm so can't understand how they managed to get in.
Castlerigg Farm was a good site, that's worth staying at if visiting the Keswick area.
The only negative we had from our week staying at this site was the weather, which was compounded by two things (the exposure of the site and the slope of the caravan field).
The site has the most amazing views of Skiddaw and Blencathra mountains, but due to the altitude of the site, we had very high winds (this resulted in one of the most unsettling nights I have ever had in the van), secondly, there is quite a slope on the filed which was made worse due to it being very muddy form the rain.
The site however is nice, with good quality and clean toilets & showers, a decent little shop and the cafe as mentioned by others.
It is situate just above Keswick and is ideally placed for getting into Keswick.
My sister and I stayed here in two small tents in late September 2010. Although it was towards the end of the season, the site was still remarkably busy, mostly with walkers - a sign of a good Lake District site I think! Excellent value for money given the location.
A very nice site, friendly and well maintained. We very much appreciated the 10.30pm silence rule, and also that when you book in, they tell you about two other sites in the area with different noise rules - very helpful considering that the sites have different owners, so they're effectively turning down business. I noticed a few children on site but I think they're primarily catering to walkers and it's not particularly child-oriented - if you want the kids entertained, there are probably other suits better suited to your needs.
It's uphill from Keswick and on a slight slope - I think this probably helps with the drainage as it was considerably less muddy than previous experiences I've had of camping in the Lakes, particularly given that it had rained heavily in the days before we went camping.
Didn't find any difficulty in getting a shower and the time seemed fine - it does explain quite clearly that they're on a private water supply and that this is the reason for the charge and time limit.
The pub food was rather odd (it's all vegetarian, which is fine, but sort of early 1980s vegetarian with lots of meat substitutes.) - however it did have local real ale, and the Hayloft Cafe was fantastic.
I'll definitely come back here when I'm next in the Lakes.
This site was my husbands first experience of camping EVER!
The site was lovely the scenery was beautiful and the staff very friendly and helpful, the toilet blocks were clean and maintained well though finding a 50p coin every day was interesting especially if you missed the shop.
The site is located well and it is easy to commute around the popular tourist attraction within the area.
The no noise rule after a certain time was great and guaranteed a good nights sleep, the only thing we would change it more structure to the plots as everyone was left to just find a gap as you can't pre book for tents so there was a lot of wasted space.
The site proved such a success we have brought a bigger tent and have been on more weekends away
This site has a truly great 360 degree view. On a clear morning it is gorgeous. It is a lovely big site and when we went in September not crowded at all though I believe it can be in summer. Ample showers for our stay, clean facilities though my husband commented on the gents not being too clean. The ladies was fine. Some of the site is on a slope, our pitch was slightly sloping but nothing too problematic. There are a lot of instructional signs around which are so numerous as to be quite funny.
The cafe/restaurant on site is fab, delicious sausage sarnie on sunday morning.
Stayed her for one night when touring the lakes. Must admit it is not the type of site we usually stay at due to its large size and the number of rules they have.
On arrival we were told which area we could park in and were informed of the silence rule which had to be kept to. The site was slightly sloping especially in the caravan field. The showers were 50p for 3 mins which seemed a bit short and I would imagine in peak season it gets very busy.
They have a cafe on site which seemed to be very popular and a small shop too. It was on the outskirts of Keswick which is a lovely town with a great market and independent shops.
We stayed here for two nights, only intended to stay one but liked it so much.
The location is fabulous, really excellent views of the hills, and a lovely walk to the nearby stone circle.
We appreciated the no noise rule after 10:30, it's a very busy and well used site so it's for families, and is not for groups or partying types who want to stay up til 1am!
Found a nice sheltered location by a hedge, nice atmosphere as the users there also want peace.
Dogs welcome which was great, but please keep them on leads! There was an incident while we were there of a dog fight and someone was bitten as one man let his dog wander, which is not wise to do anywhere!
The facilities are all there, though there are not too many showers for such a large amount of folk using the site. Only 3 showers in the ladies' area, and there must have been well over 100 people there when we were staying, so expect queues or go when others aren't using it.
You must beware that the shower time is limited to 3 minutes only, and costs 50p to boot! You can get 50ps from the shop, but you have to be fast in the shower or spend a lot. This is probably to keep the queueing down, but it is one criticism I have of the site that I think they should just provide more showers and not charge or allow longer time. We visited 10 campsites in 3 weeks and all but one of the others had free showers, and the other one that charged let it run for much longer.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
