Just returned from this site. It is a superb quiet site with beautiful views of the lake and fells. Toilets are good and checked and cleaned at least 3 times a day, well done.
They like a no noise after 10.30 policy and it seems to work well. Not so good for kids as they haven't a playground although loads of space for own games etc.
If you want relaxation, this is the site for you.
Rates are very reasonable to.
Keswick is a lovely town, a 25 min walk, pubs have singers on most nights, although you can pay £3.20 a pint of Fosters, ouch.
A cracking site which we thoroughly enjoyed. We were greeted by friendly staff and we were quickly shown to our pitch, we did need levelling blocks for the caravan but it wasn't a problem and worth the few minutes spent levelling for the wonderful location. We could see Skiddaw, Latrigg and Blencathra and the view over Bassenthwaite Lake with the sun setting WOW.
All pitches were on grass and the ground was firm enough even for large vehicles. We had a walk around the site, the grass was freshly mowed and everything had a very tidy appearance. From the camp field we could see Derwent Water, there were no marked pitches on the tent field it but it didn't seem to matter were the tents were, everyone had a good view of the mountains. The facilities were very clean, the showers were 50p but this was reflected in the very reasonable charge, we paid £14.00 per night for myself and my wife, our 2 dogs, car, caravan, electricity and awning.
The shop on the site was small but it was reasonably priced and had a very good selection of food and other items including tent pegs, air bed stoppers, air beds, walk books, batteries, mantles, puncture repair kits, children's toys, gifts, bath towels, dish cloths, buckets, washing up bowls and much more.
The site also does battery charging and gas exchange and for a small charge they also freeze freezer blocks and the money goes to Air Ambulance. We loved the silence after 10.30pm rule, not many sites ask for silence but this one does, it isn't Rocket Science you either like quiet or you don't, you stay or you don't, we liked it and wished we could stay longer than we had booked.
If you are looking for a site where its quiet, has great view, clean facilities, friendly and helpful staff then Id definitely recommend Castlerigg Farm.
We have just returned from our second visit to this site this year. We have visited the site previously on a number of occasions during the last three years and have had no problems whatsoever.
The site has two fields. One has hardstandings and hook-ups for caravans and camper vans, but also has a large space for tents. The other field is for tents. There is no booking for tents on this site, so it is on a first come first serve basis. It gets very busy during summer, so it is advisable to arrive as early as possible, if going for the weekend.
After booking in at reception and paying in advance for the number of nights you wish to stay, you can pitch anywhere. There are sometimes more restrictions due to reservations for caravans/mobile homes that do not wish to have a hook up.
There is a shop and cafe on site and you can have your freezer packs re-done at reception with all proceeds going to Air Ambulance.
The shower/toilet blocks are kept clean. There is a 50p charge for showers, which last 3 and a half minutes and there is a 20p charge for using the hairdryers.
The campsite itself is set in beautiful surroundings with views over Derwentwater. There is a lot of walking within easy reach of the site and it is possible to just park the car up and leave it on site until you are ready to go home! Keswick is within easy walking distance down a footpath, with beautiful views most of the way into town.
The town centre has plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants. One restaurant worth a visit is the Chinese restaurant called Silk Road. The food is amazing and they have a good deal on during early evening.
There are plenty of things to keep the whole family amused in Keswick. There are various museums including the Bond museum and the Pencil museum. There is also the Puzzling Place that will keep all ages busy whatever the weather outside. Of course on a fine day you have the water sports on the lake, Pitch and Putt, Crazy Golf, Parks and walks. For evening entertainment there is the Theatre By The Lake, which has a licensed bar.
All in all Keswick is a fab place to stay and this site is a very economical way of spending your time there.
Just arrived home after 3 really enjoyable nights at this site. I have been to several campsites and must say this is by far the best run site I have been to. The 10.30pm noise rule is fine as it ensures that everyone respects the site, although I must say this is not strictly adhered to really, especially as every night I could hear a guy snoring and sheep barring in the field. Upon entry the lady gave basic instructions on where to pitch so you aren't too close to someone else, which again is respecting others around you.
The camping is on a slight slope which helps if it is raining as you won't get your tent flooded! which with the weather we had this week was a good thing.
A point that seems to miss everyone elses review is the fact that they will freeze your ice blocks for your cool box for a charge of 20p that she gives to maintain the mountain rescue! very thoughtful.
Also we had a bit of a disaster with an air bed going flat and they had these in stock as well as other essential items that you only need for camping.
There is a very recently converted barn that is a restaurant/cafe and is of high standard so you can get away with not bothering with your own camping food as this will work very well.
We found just down the road a pub that allows non-residents of the hotel a pint and food. This pub was great after a long walk to pop in and have a beer in a cosy little room. It was a great touch.
From the site you can take one of the walks up walla crag and beyond. I have a 4 year old and 7 year old that loved it. There is a nice little stream that they can play in. Also you can walk to the stone circles from the campsite which is only 20 minutes walk. Everyone is very friendly, not only at the campsite but also in Keswick as well.
All in all this has to be a very reasonably priced site especially with the facilities and the views. The toilets and showers are very clean, beware the shower though! took me by surprise when it came on! actually hot! which is something you don't normally get.
Cannot fault the site, I recommend this one to anyone reading this as it is probably got the best location for most things, walking or driving.
After a long winter with a lot of snow its nice to look back and remember last years holiday at Castlerigg Farm. We enjoyed the area so much were going back the same 2 weeks this year and we've just made the decision to visit Castlerigg Farm for a week in April.
Last year was our first ever trip to the Lake District, our friends recommended Castlerigg Farm and we weren't disappointed. The site must have one of the best locations in the area, its elevated position has views of all the surrounding mountains. The site was very busy but when 10.30pm arrived there was silence. They make it clear to everyone they want silence after 10.30pm and I've read some of the reviews on these pages where people mention the sound of snoring, sheep shouting and dogs barking. This site is in the countryside and you have to expect some noise from the neighbouring farm which is about half a mile away across the fields. As for people snoring, I just hope it wasn't my husband they could hear.
Joking apart. The silence rule was wonderful, I've lost count of the sleepless nights I've had on campsites where thoughtless people in the next tent chat all night or come back from the pub and forget how noisy and inconsiderate they are being to the rest of us. I can live with the odd dog bark or lamb calling for its mother, after all,the animals cant read the rules.
The family who own the property live on site and its clearly their home and a family run site for the quieter camper. The facilities were very clean, there were hair dryers, soap dispensers and a baby changing area in the toilet block. There was even a laundry room with a coffee machine which was very handy for a quick cuppa while you were waiting for your clothes to dry. I have to admit I didn't use the iron, I was on holiday so everything got a quick shake. The on site shop was reasonable priced and for a small shop it held a surprising amount of supplies.
We had several meals in the Hayloft cafe, the breakfast gave us a good start to the day and after a long walk it was just what we wanted to enjoy a home cooked meal in the evening without the bother of having to make it. We also liked the idea of being able to take food back to the tent so we could eat and enjoy the views. The cafe didn't have a licence but we were told we could take our own wine for a small corkage charge.
50 yards from the site entrance we found the Heights hotel which was open to the public and was very handy for a tipple, although, for a totally vegetarian menu the food wasn't as good as we expected. The Hotel has a garden at the front and some families sat out there so the children could play as there wasn't enough room inside.
It took us about 25 minutes to walk from the site down a very pleasant path through the woods to Keswick and practically every other shop in town sells outdoor clothing so you're spoiled for choice. One evening we had a walk across the fields to the Castlerigg Stone Circle and from the site you can also walk up Walla Crag and over the top to Ashness Bridge, its very central for walking so you don't have to use the car.
If anyone visits this site after reading my comments I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
This is a great site that suits us (mid 50s couple). Some families regret the lack of children's facilities but there is space to play and there are views all around of possible mountains to walk up-tomorrow!
The toilet block is kept clean. Thorough clean about midday but other 'clean-ups' through the day. Plenty of hot water at the sinks and 50p for a 3 minute shower. 20p for a hair drier.
Very reasonably priced shop with a small but interesting and useful range of food and equipment.
The 10.30 curfew is very effective and ensures the site isn't full of grumpy sleep deprived children (or adults) the next day.
Pleasant mainly woodland walk from the site down to Keswick with views of Derwent on the way. (Springs Farm have a pleasant tearoom a little way along the route to break the journey).
In very wet weather the field gets quite muddy, but still useable-especially as the owners try to encourage campers not to drive to their units in particularly bad weather.
The reception and toilet blocks were very nice. The cafe was great. Also great views. On the down side the caravan field was just that a farm field, no proper roads in and when it rained as it did you were asked to park on the only track in and walk across a soaked field. Avoid pitch no 6 as it is the main walkway from the camp field to toilet block and shop so from about 07.30 to 10.30 there is a stream of people walking past down the side and front of your van within 2 feet of your windows. The site needs hardstands and a proper road and more thought to pitch layout
We have just returned from a stay at Castlerigg Farm. What can I say; yes the location is beautiful with lovely panoramic views but before you can even ask if they have a pitch they are hitting you with the 'completely quiet after 10.30pm, I say 'that's fine I've checked your website and we're in bed by then anyway!' (although dogs appear to be excluded from this rule as they're barking is a constant). It was pretty quiet when we arrived so we got a fairly good pitch, that was until a couple of days later a campervan parked within 3ft of our tent!
The facilities are very clean and well kept and the on-site shop is handy although a bit expensive, but it could do with some play equipment for children and more staff in the Hayloft Cafe.
Spectacular location with panoramic views towards Derwent.Water, Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding mountains. Our first night gave us the most amazing view of the sun setting behind the mountains beyond Bassenthwaite Lake, the sky turned a brilliant red which reflected back towards the camp site, fabulous.
A lovely site with really good clean facilities, hot showers, hairdryers, shaver points, a very useful laundry room and a cafe which provides a very hearty breakfast.
We love the no noise after 10.30pm rule, no noise means no noise. Come 10.30pm it was like some one had hit the 'Mute' button and we were very impressed. Due to my illness I need a proper sleep, a good nights sleep is as essential to me as disables facilities are to the disabled and because I could sleep well it meant we could stay longer.
We liked the freedom of being able to choose where we pitched as were not keen on sites with marked pitches where it feels too regimented, on this site all camping pitches have great views so it doesn't matter which field you camp in.
We spent 2 weeks at Castlerigg Farm, the weather was mixed and during our stay other sites lower down were evacuated as the water level in the lakes and rivers had flooded some areas. The camp fields at Castlerigg drain well and a day after the heavy rains the warden was out cutting the grass. The staff were always around cleaning or gardening so you felt they were there if needed but they never intruded and the site had a very nice family atmosphere.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan a return visit very soon.
Having just returned from a lovely 5 day break I can definitely say this campsite was OK!.
On arrival we we're told we could pitch wherever we wanted, which gave us the freedom to find the best view of the surrounding mountains, beautiful! The staff were friendly and the cafe did a nice breakfast roll.
The criticism though is that the drinking water was brown! Although treated and therefore safe I had no urge to drink it or even wash in it, although we had no choice in that one. There were only 3 showers, they were clean and hot and when I eventually got to the front of the queue they cost 50p for 3 and a half mins!
They charged £22 per night (because we had a big tent), location was fantastic and I would definitely recommend a walk up Latrigg, we did it after sunset and got the most beautiful view of Keswick & Derwent water.
Hi just came back from this site this morning, having booked in for four nights. The weather was absolutely appalling but the site itself was exactly how I expected it(previously camped there) Toilet block clean, considering the weather, showers hot (50p charge, so what). The Harrison family (the owners) can't seem to do too much for you, helped to set me up and pulled my van to the gravel road when we left to avoid damaging the grass. They even lent the chap next to me an electric hookup cable.
The shop is well stocked with the basics and reasonably priced. The 10.30pm noise law (and it is law) is excellent for a good nights sleep, if you want late night parties it aint going to happen here. The only gripe which is very small is the layout of the dishwashing facilities, they are very cramped.
Even though the weather was pretty bad (rain) we did manage to climb Cats Bells which has a fantastic view of the lake. All in all an excellent stay apart from the weather.
We have just returned from a 3 night stay on this site. It has great views and the toilet / shower area was clean although very busy and there were queues some mornings and a lack of paper some evenings. I agree with some other reviewers that there should be marked pitches as we had a family who pitched their tent less than 3 foot from our sleeping area who then parked their car in front of our tent so all we could see was their car. It was nice and quiet after 10.30 but I felt that there were too many signs saying what you couldn't do. Think we will try another site on our next trip to Keswick
Firstly, don't consider this site unless you like complete quiet after 10.30pm. On arrival the rules are pointed out and after 10,30pm, the owners are quick to remind anyone who's voices can be heard. We think this is a great idea, more sites should be like this to allow everyone to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. It was obvious we were not the only people who liked the idea of a good nights sleep as there were plenty of other campers on site. Someone asked what happens when babies cried, the owner said babies crying was excusable, there was no excuse for adults who made noise.
The site location is second to none with panoramic views from both camp fields. To wake up and see Derwent Water, Bassenthwaite Lake, Blencathra, Skiddaw, Catbells and many other mountains from the doorway of our tent was a great start to the day. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and although we had to pay 50p for the power showers this was reflected in the reasonable camping charges. The site shop supplied the few items we had forgot to pack, even tent pegs and a tent repair kit for the hole we found in the roof of the tent. Unfortunately we were not impressed with the vegetarian food at the hotel just down the road from the site, but we did enjoy the breakfast from the sites Hayloft Cafe and it was so nice to be lazy and get takeaways from the cafe, yummy fish and chips.
From the site we did several walks, we went over Walla Crag to Ashness Bridge then down to Derwent Water where we caught the boat which took us to the other side of the lake. We had a picnic then caught the boat back to Keswick, had an ice cream and walked back to the site. The following day we walked down through the woods to Keswick and then to Derwent Water where we caught the launch to the other side and walked up Catbells. When the weather became too hot for the dogs to walk in the sun the friendly staff gave us some good ideas of shaded walks. We walked along the old railway line between Keswick and Threlkeld, the dogs loved being close to the river, it kept them nice and cool. The following day we walked through Whinlatter Forrest and the boys loved swinging through the trees at 'Go Ape', we went to the Whinlatter visitor centre and had out lunch at the picnic area in the woods, so much to do.
A site we will return to time and time again and would gladly recommend.
Just got back from such a glorious site have to say not my first visit been many many times over the last 3 years.
Firstly the facilities are top class clean and warm 3 showers and numerous toilets per men’s and woman’s block, you do have to pay 50p 3 1/2mins shower as they are on a private water supply that actually comes down off the mountains under the site and gets filtered.
They also have a laundry room with washer and drier ironing board wash costs £2.00 dryer takes 20ps they also have plug sockets for hairdryers etc, they will also charge anything for 50p.
The dish washing room has 3 sinks along with 2 more in laundry room these are very clean stainless steel with large bins that are emptied all the time.
I have to say best I’ve seen so far.
There is a small shop on site selling the basics plus more even sell camp stoves. Also freezer blocks freezer and small fridge.
It has a 4star rated cafe onsite that is out of this world it has a log fire fab.
The site itself although can gets lots of rain as it’s in the lakes it has excellent drainage.
Set out perfect, tents in one field, caravans in other.
The no noise after 10.30pm rule is in place and works Doris takes no nonsense nor does she let let’s say festival goers on just families and couples it gets lots of walkers.
The staff family run are perfect and always at hand they live above the facilities block.
The area itself is an absolute walkers paradise it truly is like being on another world with views of derwent water, wella crag, skidaw, all out your tent what else can you ask for.
Incidentally the cafe does takeaway bacon on toast pizzas etc.
