After a long journey, we were desperate for a stop over and struggling to find anywhere with it being Spring Bank school holiday week. Castlerigg Farm offered us a pitch without electricity, which we were so grateful for! The lady in reception was very friendly and helpful and the facilities were excellent. The pitching was informal around the perimeter of a huge field so plenty of room. Even though the site was busy, the curfew was adhered to and it was very quiet. The views from the site were spectacular and we could have spent a few days here, other than we were on our way to visit family! We noted that there was a cafe on site but did not use it as we had everything with us. Keswick was only a short drive away. Would definitely use this site again and would recommend to others.
My son and I returned from this site, last night. We booked there so we could do multi-fell walking, direct from the site and also walk down into Keswick, without moving our camper. What a good spot! Lovely views, only downside in general is the whole site is sloping so keep those levellers handy. Also, having been a full-time carer, for my now, passed away husband, I noted that there is a lot of gravel apparent, especially around reception and in their car park. Also no disabled facilities as yet but planning is in the offing, or so I was informed. That aside, we liked the site. Facilities are clean, a bit dated but do the job. My son grumbled about having to pay 50p for a metered shower and opted to use our on-board facilities. There is a small shop on site, plus coffee shop and restaurant - none of which we used so I can't comment on them. Dishwashing and laundry facilities more than meet requirements so no grumbles there. I have to say, staff were so welcoming and really were very accommodating towards us, especially as we arrived late on Friday evening, having had to pick my son up from work and arriving on site at 8 pm. Yesterday (Sunday) we were requested to vacate our pitch by 11. 30 am but, as that was too soon for us to begin our two hour journey home, the staff suggested we leave our 'van in their car park, for as long as we needed, whilst we walked down into Keswick for some retail therapy, asking for a small donation to their Great North Air Ambulance collection, in return. Finally, may I recommend Annie's Pantry, a tucked away gem of a coffee shop, in Spring Woods, on the walk down from the site, to Keswick (via the woods, of course!). Now that I usually travel on my own, I wouldn't hesitate to return here as a solo camper - a very friendly site!
Upsdides: Excellent site, rules great(!), views stunning, lots of walking from site. As another reviewer said 35 min walk down to Keswick £5 for a taxi back. Water incandescently hot (usually). Fast wifi £10/week for two devices - worked well. Staff helpful and friendly. Downsides (slight) sloping field, pitches worn late season, showers 50p for 3. 5min, everyone has a dog (apart from us)- dog walking area. Water (from spring) peat brown after rain. No taps in fields. Hayloft cafe good for breakfasts and burgers etc. , rather than a restaurant. Toilet/shower block fine if not luxurious but we were after high season - they seemed a tad small for high season. Marked child-friendliness down a bit because of silence rule but not a problem for us.
Lovely site but all the rules and regulations were a bit off putting, that aside the campsite was immaculate and well kept, the showers and toilets were lovely, also they had a doggy washing facility which was very useful, the views were stunning. On site shop sold the basics café bar looked nice although we did not visit so we can't comment on the food.
This is our first visit to this site and will be back. Great views over Keswick and it's only a 20 minutes to walk there but it is a steep walk back but the taxi is only £4 to £5. The campsite is well kept and the toilets are spotless. It is definitely no noise after 10. 30pm we were talking gone that time and was told to be quiet, which we did, Lovely walks cat bells, skiddaw etc. And not far from castlerigg stone circles.
We visit this site at least twice a year. The previous owners Doris and Ray have recently passed over the business to daughter and son-in-law Emma and Linton who are doing a fine job.
Bernie, one of the wardens, is extremely helpful and pleasant. He worked on the Gypsy Caravan, a recent addition to the site for hire.
The site is immaculate and extremely well maintained.
The Hayloft, restaurant/café, not only provides excellent meals but supplies packed breakfasts and lunches for those who want to make a fuss free start to the day and enjoy the area.
All facilities are very good and plans to upgrade are on the books.
I believe the site offers the best view of 360 degrees in Lakeland.

This was my third visit to Castlerigg but my first during the holiday season. So here is a brief update to my previous review.
Despite the site being fairly full on this visit, the 10. 30pm noise curfew was strictly observed.
As in my previous visit, I found the facilities were kept clean. They were replenished regularly and there was plenty of hot water. Despite the full campsite, there were no queues for the facilities.
Although the season was well underway, the grass was still in very good repair with very few yellowed or thin patches.
I found the welcome as warm as on previous trips and booking in was trouble-free.
The site has held the same tariff from 2014 so prices remain reasonable - I paid £10. 90 for one person plus a car pitching a single tent for one night.
The on-site Hayloft cafe is under new management for 2015 and now has a drinks licence. It has extended its opening hours since my previous visits and now serves breakfast from 8am. The cafe is open in the evening too; the food is good and reasonably priced.
This remains a friendly and well-run campsite in a great location and I continue to recommend it.
Stayed here for 1 night, brilliant views, staff amazing especially Sam who is a credit to the team. Would certainly recommend this site to all ages. Very clean & well looked after. Toilet block could do with being updated but they were clean. Brilliant cafe (hayloft) & a lovely little pub (think it was called the crag pub) just 2 minute walk away. Owner very polite & informative of surrounding area etc. Look forward to going back
Just back from 2 nights camping at Castlerigg Farm after a 3 year break. If anything, the site has got even better although the toilet block does need updating. Its now run by the daughter and son in law of the original owner and they, like all the other staff, couldn't have been more friendly.
The main reason we like the site, ignoring its perfect location, is its strict no noise after 1030 policy. This was much appreciated after 2 exhausting days on the fells.
The Heyloft Cafe is much improved. We went in for a main and a dessert but after the home made beef burger, had no room for pudding! The burger, by the way was perfect.
£34 for 2 people for 2 nights? 50p for a shower? Thats fine by me and I think fair value for money. I wasn't interested in wifi (although £2 per item does seem excessive).
A perfect 2 days, and as an added unexpected bonus, if the weather and orbits are right, its a perfect place to see the space station go across from the west and across the camp site.
My friend and I stayed here for a few days recently for the first time with mixed weather but it was june, the site was a good size and very clean in the pitch areas with the grass mown and any litter picked up regular by staff, we pitched by a stone wall for better shelter, the views were great in all directions
The on site shop stocked basic supplies just what is needed and was open at good times, the toilets were ok although I think needed updating maybe 50p for 3 mins for a shower was a bit steep and could be raised to 5 mins
There were lots of dogs on this site so if you are not a dog lover this wouldn't be too ideal but they were kept on leads and fairly quiet most the time
Overall this campsite is very good and in a good location and I think we would come again
We have been campers for many years but just bought our first motorhome. After a recommendation we decided to try this site for our maiden voyage and we've had a fabulous time. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the views were one of the best we have enjoyed in our many visits to the Lake District. Staying over a Bank Holiday you expect everywhere to be busy but this site didn't cram people in and we had loads of room. One of the reasons for choosing this site was their quiet policy, unfortunately one couple obviously had no respect for the people around them and we're making a heck of a noise but by 11. 15pm the noise suddenly came to an end. We found out the following morning a regular visitor who obviously knew the ropes had reported the noise to the Wardens who had responded immediately and the noisy couple were evicted.
As previous reviews have said this site does charge extra for showers, we asked about this and were told they are on a private water supply, their water supply is not unlimited and if visitors used unlimited water while showering their supply would soon run out. We've never thought of the implications of supplying water, as city dwellers we take it for granted we turn on the tap and water appears. We also paid to have freezer blocks frozen but this money was for Air Ambulance which is a great way of raising funds for them.
We have been to many campsites and most of them have free WiFi which limits us to sending the odd email or look at the weather forecast and little else. At Castlerigg Farm we paid for a WiFi ticked and could send and receive emails, look at the weather forecast and even watch TV without interruption which suited us fine.
The facilities on site were spotless and as we had a couple of very wet days the staff did a marvelous job keeping everything in order despite the amount of feet trampling in and out of the buildings. The ground was well kept and in good order, the wardens were always about checking for litter and cleaning. The dog walk area is one of the best we have seen with lots of room for the dogs to run free and they don't charge for dogs which was a great saving as we have 3. We enjoyed two excellent meals at the Hayloft, the food was hot and tasty and very good value, definitely worth a visit.
Keswick itself is a lovely place, we enjoyed wandering around the market and down to the lake, the dogs enjoyed a swim even though the water was very cold. As always we spent a fortune on outdoor clothes but if your into walking then Keswick is the place to be to get kitted out.
We would not hesitate to recommend this site and we have already booked to return.
Nice site! Friendly welcome upon arrival and we were walked to our good sized pitch, which was as with most on the site 'slightly sloping'. We paid £19. 50 per night for two people in a campervan with elec hook up. But, as others have stated, it was then 50p for a shower (I needed £1), 20p for the hairdryer, 20p for freezer blocks etc etc. Everything was extra. It was great to have Wifi on the site, but again, it cost an extra £2 per day per device.
The facilities were clean, but perhaps starting to look a little tired - which doesn't bother me, but for the money they were charging, I was expecting more for some reason. My shower had a rusty old disabled type chair contraption in it and little things like no hot or cold indication on the shower control - so it took me 25p trying to work out how to cool it down from scolding before I could even start my shower!
The Hayloft Cafe was very good with big hearty meals and very good value for money.
The 'No Noise' policy after 10. 30pm was good for us as we wanted to be up early for a big hike so needed an early night.
In summary, it is a nice site and at £19. 50 is reasonable value, but we would probably try elsewhere before we came back.
Stayed here before and loved the site for the views went again this year for easter the staff are amazing and so helpful helped us onto the pitch due the the soft ground and nothing is a problem
Just a couple of little moans like most people I found all the rules stuck up everywhere quite annoying and the 50p shower for 3 mins and having to wait for the water to warm up. I did notice the tiles in the showers were a bit grubby and could do with a good clean but I think this site is great although we did have a problem with the ehu tripping out which ive never had before
Went to the hayloft were if I'm honest I wouldn't visit again the staff were amazingly friendly and I could clearly see they were stretched staff wise but the food wasn't the best the chips had been reheated a few times and gammon very dry resulting in both of us running to the toilet block at 3am but this could have been down to going at a very busy time as they were a lovely couple
Again a great site with amazing staff and views but I do think for £23. 00 pn they could do with adding some little extras in now as most super pitches are £25. 00 pn in top areas
I will go back and will continue for years to come
