This weekend was a special one for myself and so although there were camp sites in the lakes much nearer to the walk I wanted to do, there really was no choice but to stay again at Castlerigg Farm.
The only thing that changes there is that it gets better, and better.
The new cafe looks amazing although I can not tell you what the food is like, we cooked our own.
I can tell you the toilets are still as clean as ever, that there was still hot water, and that Doris's welcome is always warm, if firm.
Break the 10.30 rule and you WILL be asked to leave. Something I personally think is brilliant.
There is no flashy club house on this site, no swimming pool, no kids club, no kids play ground even.
There is a view possibly only matched by that of the NT's site at the foot of Scafell Pike.
To be blunt, if you come to this site and have a terrible holiday something very serious must have gone down, it really is so peaceful. Ohh did I forget to mention it is currently one of the cheapest in the Lakes?
I have visited this campsite many times before and it is always a pleasure to camp here. The site owner always sticks to the silence rules at night-times. Facilities are excellent including the shop and the shower/toilet facilities and the laundry and dish washing facilities. The staff are always very helpful. I will look forward to visiting again especially now they have breakfast and evening meal facilities on the site. Also the views from the site are tremendous in all directions especially on a clear day.
This is a nice site in a cracking location, overlooking Derwentwater, Keswick and just below Walla Crag. There are no hardstanding pitches, so, after a night of rain, our van had to be towed off. Facilities are clean and well maintained, but there is a charge for showers, which I though was a little expensive as we'd paid £21 for four people for the night. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. Very quiet site with a 'No noise after 10.30' rule.
We were directed to Castlerigg Farm by the Keswick Caravan Club site, who were full, and we're really glad we ended up there.
The site enjoys a great hilltop location, with beautiful views over the lakes. There were no hardstanding spots when we arrived, but there was a large grassy field with plenty of space to choose from.
Check-in was quick & easy, and the staff friendly.
The toilet blocks were clean and functional, although there was a charge for the showers (because the site's up a hill it isn't on the mains water supply).
The local pub is nice, with a fully vegetarian menu (perfect for a veggie like me!), but beware they only serve food until 8pm. It was a bit of a hike into town to find somewhere else to eat, and we opted for a taxi to bring us back up the hill.
An onsite shop sells hot & cold filled rolls and packed lunchdes for hillwalking & days out.
The site is a great base for exploring the Lake District, there's a stone circle very close by and lots of great scenery and tourist attractions nearby.
Just returned from our second visit to Castlerigg Farm, our first visit was in August with the children. We were re-directed to Castlerigg Farm from the Camping & Caravan Club Site as the club site ground was a bit wet. We did wonder if we should go home as it was continuous rain but after the long journey from the midlands we decided to stay for one night. That one night turned in to two weeks and we had a wonderful stay at this lovely well run site.
Although the weather was awful the ground conditions were not too bad, there were a couple of muddy places where the cars had all pulled off the road in the same area but we were amazed at how quickly the ground drained as after a days sunshine everything dried up and vehicles had no problems.
The staff were friendly and helpful and did a wonderful job keeping everything so clean, the handy shop was useful for the daily paper, fresh bread and milk and they do wonderful sandwiches when you cant be bothered to make your own. Plenty of hot water for showers and the coffee machine in the laundry room is a good idea for a warm drink while your waiting for your clothes to dry.
The views from the camp field are amazing, no chance of some people bagging all the best pitches as wherever you look the views are fantastic.
One thing to be aware of, they are strict about the 10.30pm no noise rule which we found to our liking. They don't allow groups, just families or couples, the staff walk round at night and were quick to remind people if their voices were carrying and we found this an advantage as we prefer a quiet site and like a good nights sleep.
We have just returned from our second stay at Castlerigg Farm, this time it was myself and my wife and again we had a wonderful stay. The staff were as helpful as ever and gave us some good advice on local walks. If possible the views were even better than we remembered, the autumn colours were at their best and we have decided to plan another trip before the end of the season. This site is run by a family for the quieter camper and it's well worth a visit.
We had stayed at this campsite before, one Bank Holiday about 3 years ago. At the time we thought this campsite was good compared to others in the Lake District and Snowdonia that we had previously experienced. However, in the intervening years we have been spoilt by other better campsites round the country, so now we are less impressed.
On this visit, quite a large area of the fields was very muddy, so the tents were more crammed in on the drier areas. The first night wasn't too bad, but on subsequent nights we ended up with people camped right on top of us. The facilities are OK, but there could definitely be more to cope with the numbers of people at peak time. Only 2 ladies showers were working when we were there, which resulted in long queues. By the morning the facilities were also quite dirty, so could have been cleaned more often.
The shop is well stocked and the views are good.
I might return again at a low season, but probably wouldn't use it at peak time again, as we felt that our stay was spoilt by the very close proximity to other campers.
Castlerigg Farm campsite is next door to Castlerigg Hall campsite, both on the A591 about 2 miles out of Keswick. The site is set in quite an elevated position so it's quite a slog back to the tent if you venture into town to sample the fine pubs that Keswick has to offer. But the views of Skiddaw and Blencathra and the fells around Derwent Water are stunning - a great sight to wake up to.
Larger tents have to go in the top field when it's busy. This is sloping and quite exposed to wind but Keswick is just a short drive away for new poles, new guy lines, a cosy B&B, etc.
Facilities are good and clean but looking in need of some updating. They are really keen on saving water. Yes, I know this is probably the wettest place in England but apparently they are on a private water supply (which is slightly discoloured but tastes good). Showers are 50p for 3.5 minutes but they are powerful and hot and I was done before the 50p dropped anyway. The taps in the sinks are slightly irritating until you synchronise your teeth cleaning routine with the 2 second burst of water from the tap. But it's all in a good cause and nothing to worry about.
Shop is nicely stocked with food and camping basics. Nice bacon. Nice bread rolls. And Eccles Cakes - one of my particular weaknesses. They also do breakfast butties and packed lunches. All staff friendly and helpful, although they do have a stern look in their eye when they tell you about the 10.30 no-noise policy. But it works and it's generally a relaxed place.
Pitches are based on how many people your tent is supposed to hold, rather than the number of people - but it was just £12/night for a six-man tent containing the two of us.
There is a bar withing walking distance if the walk back from Keswick doesn't appeal. The Crag Bar is on the edge of Castlerigg Hall campsite. Fair to middling Jennings beer but not much room to sit down. If you plan to eat there, be aware it's vegetarian only.
Walking in the area is, of course, excellent. Skiddaw and Blencathra are very close.
We had a wonderful holiday at Castlerigg, even though the weather was mixed. It is really well located near to Keswick many lovely walks. It has a well stocked shop. The showers were a bit strange as you have to pay to use them and it is difficult to keep your clothes dry while showering! The trick is to bring a large plastic bag, put everything in it and hang it on the door. The people who manage it are very friendly and helpful. We would definitely go there again.
A really nice campsite with fantastic views. It looks beautiful in the morning. It's not far from the town of Keswick which is lovely. Lots to see and do- the motor museum is a must see with the James bond, knight rider and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Car. The science museum is also great fun with optical illusions. It's about 30 minutes drive into Windermere and I recommend hiring a motorboat and going out on the lake- so relaxing.
It was not too busy when we arrived on the 5th of September so we were able to get a good camping pitch. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with regards to information about the local area and recommending places to visit. The facilities, i.e. Toilet/shower block were well maintained and clean, there are dish washing facilities, drinking water and showers. The showers cost 50p for 3 minutes. The showers normally last longer than 3 minutes, but you may have to use more than one 50p if you are washing your hair. When busy, queueing for the showers is possible there is only 3 female showers for the whole site, although this was rare during our stay (only had to wait once.)
Breakfast in the morning is a treat, where the staff will make hot rolls for you and there is a well stocked shop.
There is a no noise policy after 10.30, which means absolutely NO noise at all. Even whispering is not allowed, so be warned they are very strict. The gates to the site are locked at 10.30 so access to the campsite after this point is not possible. So not the best place to camp if you want to stay up late and have a drink or even a quiet chat. There is a local Jennings pub nearby (a couple of minutes walk at most) which is very small, but very cosy and reasonably priced. Barbecues are allowed and the site provides bricks which can be used to sit disposables on.
Overall a lovely campsite and I would highly recommend it. I would definitely go back if visting the lake district.
This was my virgin camping trip! I can't praise the location highly enough and the campsite was spot on especially the cleanliness (which is very important). I thought that with the location, weather and time of year the campsite would overfill to an overcrowded proportion but I was pleasantly surprised as there was a lot of pitches still available when the site was closed & classed as full. I think that the managers of the site have their priorities exactly right with their rules. The site managers have a zero tolerance noise policy this backed up with a couple of evictions on mornings 2 & 3! (def a good thing). The only criticism being the lack of showers but only a very minor point.
We’ve just stopped at this site for the second time in a month and what a difference school holidays make, 1sttime in July it was fairly quiet, this weekend it was full shortly after wearrived on Fri 17th Aug. Owing to the weather the fields had cut upbadly in the few weeks that we’d been away but that’s probably to be expected. Also some people did pitch very close to other tents which was a bit ignorantof them. Now to our review, obviously the fact we went back speaks for itself, nice sized camping fields in fantasticsurroundings, easy local walks to Castlerigg Stone Circle, Walla Crag andKeswick town centre isn’t to far away but it’s a stiff walk back up to the site though the 555 Keswick to Lancaster bus stops at the end of the road from the site if you do leave the car on the site. One thing we were a bit disappointed with, although we knew before we went, is that EHU pitches are for caravans andmotorhomes only. Also you can’t book a tent pitch, its first come first served. The one thing we noticed from our 1stvisit was that the single toilet block would be very busy if the site was busyand our 2nd visit confirmed this. Only 4 toilets and 3 showers inthe men’s area and 5 toilets and 3 showers in the women’s area meant a bit ofstanding around. Maybe another block would be something for the future? Also wethink 50p for 3 and a half minutes in the shower is a bit steep when so manysites are 20p or even free. Having said this the facilities that are there aregood. The dishwashing facilities are good andthere are laundry facilities on site but we can’t comment on them as we neverused them. There’s a decent little shop on site and a couple of supermarkets inKeswick, there’s a pub just outside the site if you don’t fancy the walk / drive into Keswick. Finally the drinking water can be a bit brown as it’s a private supply and comes from the surrounding fells and streamsbut is filtered and treated and is safe to drink. To sum up, one we’ll definitely be going back too, its not perfect but it is pretty good.
Absolutely fantastic site. Facilities are excellent and the owners so friendly - cannot do enough for you. Weather not good, but waterproofs to the ready, so did not matter. Brilliant walks - managed Blencathra, Catbells, High Spy & Helvellyan in the 5 days.
Cannot recommend this site enough. Had a look at Castlerigg Hall, but preferred this one by far.
Worth mentioning are the views which are spectacular, the site isn't overcrowded, the pitches are exceptionally well drained (no soggy bottom on the last day). The toilets/showers were cleaned regularly, always a plentiful supply of loo roll, scalding hot water for washing up, the pitches are fairly flat, superb bacon/sausage/egg butties in the morning (and till midday if you're a late sleeper), and the staff were very friendly staff.
The only negatives were that we were charged extra for having a 6 man tent (just me and the nipper) so £12.00 a night and not the £8.80 quoted on their website which doesn't mention charges based on tent size. The water. While perfectly drinkable. is the colour of yaks urine. They don't take debit or credit cards. And the 30 crows who piped up at 5am every morning (in the tree above us) made our friends wish they'd brought an air rifle (I slept through it).
Would I go there again? Absolutely. My daughter loved it.
A pleasure to return to this wonderful site. Very clean, tidy and very well equipped. Good level pitches available. Though if you want electric hook ups BOOK EARLY! We didn't need one so were able to enjoy the views from the top field. This site is also very reasonable and has a well stocked shop with friendly helpful staff. Every time we go here we always wish we could stay longer. Yes it really is that good. Go and see for yourselves.
As always had a great time , site clean & not to over crowded. wash rooms clean and staff great. Shame some of the campers did not keep noise down aftar 11pm as this is one of the things that attracted us to this site in the first place. Great place for walking . Keswick nice ,good pubs plenty to choose from also good chippy in town.
