We stayed here for 9 nights, two of us with two large dogs in a large tent.
Having read other reviews we thought we would try this site.
First impressions were of the view, it was nothing less than stunning!
Like many campsites in the area, this one is also first come-first serve, unlike some campsites we have stayed in, this campsite managed this well, not overcrowding the site, leaving the occupants the choice of where to pitch.
The owners were friendly enough and helpful with local knowledge.
The site is on a slight slope, but it has many flat areas which we were lucky enough to get.
The price is good for the facilities, bearing in mind that it is a very secure site, gates shutting at 2200, CCTV in operation nearer the toilet block.
The 2230 no noise policy is rigorously adhered to and quite rightly so, we experienced three adults being evicted one morning after being 'noisy' up to 0300 that morning, this was good to see.
The only thing we would have liked to have seen is the 'dogs on leads' policy adhered to and enforced more, lots of dogs, who may be well behaved at home, were running around to their hearts content at points, and at one point, whilst we were feeding ours, came over and started becoming aggressive!
Overall a great site, we certainly will visit again!
We spent 2 nights here in August 2013. Our party consisted of 2 adults, 2 children and a toddler. We were charged £25 per night, with no charge for our toddler or car. They did not seem to be too worried about tent size.
I have to admit that we had meant to visit a neighbouring site and came here by mistake, but to be honest we had no real regrets in the end.
Checking in was straightforward and although they do not allocate specific pitches, we were given good directions to where we should camp. The two fields (one of which features hard standing and EHU facilities) seemed to be well drained and the ground was perfect for pitching our tent. We were able to park our car right next to the tent, so no problems carrying gear from a distant car park.
Facilities were fairly modest, but clean, well stocked and more than met our needs. It would be nice to see a children's play area, but there was plenty of space to run around and play without disturbing others. The staff seemed very friendly and helpful.
Prices in the shop seemed pretty good too. Not only that, but although they have a £10 min spend to pay by card, this can be done via cashback, which I thought was an excellent touch, and one that I really appreciated.
This site is very quiet, and they are keen to maintain the peace by enforcing silence between 22:30 and 07:00, which is fine by me.
The location is about 2 miles out of Keswick uphill, but is perfect for visiting the local stone circle and Walla Crag. The view from our tent was amazing!
I would like to see the on-site restaurant open for lunch and/or dinner. We breakfasted at the tent, so I have to admit we did not try it. There is a local pub that serves great vegetarian food next door though. Great real ale too!
This was our first family camping trip, and so I have nothing to compare this site with. However, it seemed like an excellent introduction. I would like to visit some other sites now, but I would have no hesitation about returning here at some point and would recommend it to others.
PROS: Quite a lot of space. Beautiful landscapes - hills and mountains all around.
CONS: Really expensive, approx. 50% more than all the other campsites in UK we have visited, even those with pools, playgrounds etc. Showers 50p per 3 minutes, also the most expensive of all places we've been to. Rained almost all the time - luckily ground was able to accumulate all the water. After reception and shop is closed (quite early) you cannot get coins for showers nowhere so remember to return early or obtain them in advance. Lots of 'NO's all around. As their policy says: 'It is not enough to be quiet after 10. 30pm, absolute silence is required. '
No playgrounds, restaurants etc. Just a small shop, coffe machine, wash machine and tumble dryer.
A lovely site. We were initially a little put off by the 'no noise after 10. 30' rule, but having visited other sites we see why! The facilities are fine, spacious and clean, and though the showers are pricey they do explain the reason. We had a pitch near the entrance which felt a little public -I think we'd chose to be on one of the fields next time. It's a good combination of the facilities you would expect from a more commercial campsite (shop and a lovely cafe for breakfast) with the scenery and atmosphere that you would find at somewhere a little less commercial. The location is perfect - who needs a kids' playground when there is a stream down the lane, and the views of the fells around could not be bettered. We didn't feel the need to take the camper off the site whilst we were there - walks to Keswick, a boat trip and a visit to the stone circle were all possible from the site.
We stopped here at the beginning of May and loved the view over the water, we camped at the top of the site and were quite exposed to the wind but still worth it for the view.
The site was quiet while we were there (Monday to Friday) and we never heard any noise from other campers. The field is slightly sloping but this was not noticeable at night.
The toilet blocks were clean and the water was hot and the 50p charge for a shower seemed reasonable considering how long the water lasted (I got bored waiting for it to stop) unlike some places where you hardly have time to wash off the shower gel before they stop. The very slightly coloured water tasted fine and I drank over a litre every day.
The walks from the site are great, we went to the stone circle one night, drove out and walked up skiddaw and walked from the site to do a lovely low lakeside circular route.
I found all the staff to be very friendly and the small shop is well stocked. Keswick was a short drive away with plenty of pubs and restaurants. I highly recommend the place and the area.
We stayed here for 4 nights and were very impressed with the site. The toilets and shower block are kept clean, 4 showers in the men's and 4 to 6 toilets, the shower takes 50p for 3 and a half minutes but I am sure its longer. The owners are very nice. Little things like dog poo bags at the gate and the hot chocolate machine in the wash room for those cold days make all the difference. Ice block freezing at reception, 20p and the money goes to a worthy charity for that area. Yes I would go back with no hesitation.
Visited this campsite a few times en-route to Scotland, and enjoyed it both times. It offers really lovely views and is surrounded by mountains, and there are great walks all around it, including ones to the nearby Castlerigg stone circle. It is just a few miles from Keswick where there are plenty of local facilities and eat-out places.
The campsite itself is large, and is very popular so tends to be very busy. They have a limited number of showers so could do with some more, they only have 2 in the womens' so sometimes there are queues.
There is a policy not to allow noise after 10pm which is good as it's quite an open and popular site (other than dogs barking - their take on this was 'can't stop that, and kids as they don't know better. ')
This year there were a lot of very boggy patches on the pitch areas, so we had to be careful to choose a dry place, just due to excessive rainfall over the months.
The only downside I think about this campsite is they charge 50p for a shower, which I think is a bit much considering the campsite itself isn't that cheap just for a tent. We stayed in many other campsites through Scotland and only one other charged for a shower, the rest consider the fee pays for the facilities.
Other than that, the owners are friendly and helpful and we love this campsite and definitely will go again.
This site is my favourite site ever! I love everything about it. The view are just stunning from all around, I really can't tell you how lovely they are. The facilities are just what you need - toilets, showers and wash basins. The showers take 50p and last about three minutes. Always hot and powerful and felt good after a days walking in the fells.
They aren't on the mains, so the water is brown, but is just as clean and passes all the various tests. If you're not keen, grab a 5ltr bottle from Booths Supermarket which is just a few miles away (along with many many more shops covering all needs).
We had a very friendly greeting from the owner, the signs everywhere telling you to keep quiet do make it seem like it could be a bit of a 'too many rules site' but they work and I don't think you'd pick the site if you wanted late nights.
We will be back next year. Really enjoyed our stay here.
This site operates on a first come first served basis, so get there early. Their prices are reasonable and they are keen to point out the 'Quiet after 10:30' rule, which suited me fine. The staff are very friendly and are quite tolerant of children.
The views are fantastic, when the rain clouds lift to show them, which as a result had left the camping field rather wet, but was not as boggy as some I have experienced in the Lakes. The facilities include a sizable utility building, however the pot wash area was a bit cramped, but I didn’t experience any queuing. All facilities were kept clean. They are not on mains water at this site and, although safe to drink, it has a brown colour to it. The reception also serves as a small shop.
The Hayloft is an on site cafe which is open at breakfast and tea time, again reasonably priced.
I was given a very warm and friendly welcome as I have on every visit to this site.
This is a well run family orientated site with spectacular viewes in just about every direction.
The camping field slopes gently but this isn't a problem. Even though there had been heavy rain I managed to find a reasonably dry pitch.
As has been mentioned the site does not have 'mains' water and hence the 50p charge for showers. This gives 3 1/2 mins which is adequate and prevents wastage. The peaty looking drinking water looks rather unappealing but is said to be regularly quality tested and safe. Bottled water can be bought from Booths supermarket in the town for those who prefer a more conventional looking alternative
The 'Quite after 10:30pm' is welcome and seems to be adhered to to by everyone.
It's a real pleasure to stay here and if the weather is good the setting is idyllic
Brilliant, we turned up after deciding against another site so didn't know what to expect. The site was clean and had everything we needed, the shop was reasonably priced.
The views are amazing whichever direction you look. The staff were friendly and helpful. Even though it rained heavily several times whilst we were there the site didn't become boggy as expected.
We found Booths supermarket in Keswick was the best place for supplies and they refund your parking ticket when you shop and park there.
We did Skiddaw, Cat Bells, Maiden Moor and High Spy whilst we were there, take plenty of food/water to do the latter (and sun cream!).
The views were amazing, the facilities were great. 50p per shower was fine, the water was so hot, wash up was great.
The only problem we found with this campsite was park where ever you like. No conformity. I like a quiet site with designated set up which this was not, I know it was school holiday and midweek and the site was packed.
I wouldn't like to this this at a really busy time, going by other previous reviews
If your not bothered by over crowding, this is definitely the place for you, the views, walks were fantastic
This was expensive for camping on a sloping un-marked field, paying extra for hot showers and a hairdrier. The water in all the facilities, including the 'drinking water tap' was peaty brown, and the 'silence after 10. 30pm' rule is only relevant to those who respect it, and was not monitored by the campsite staff, ie door slamming and loud music 'til 12. 30am one night of our visit. The tone of all the written rules for using the facilities, such as the laundry, was blunt to the point of rude. At least the charge for freezing icepacks went to the Air Ambulance, and the Hayloft cafe's bacon butties were delicious. But it's a long slog back up the hill for 1+ miles from the loveliest town in the Lakes - we shall choose a closer friendlier site next time.
A beautiful location with views of Skiddaw, Blencathra, Derwent and Bassenthwaite Lake. A gentle stroll down hill to Keswick, (Four pounds back up hill in a taxi and worth every penny)
We were not able to book in advance and electric hook up not an option available for campers.
On arrival, staff friendly and we were given directions to the camping field.
The camping field is quite big with one track down the middle. No allocated pitches and we did find people were quite close together. Due to the size of the field, people could/would drive close to your tent on their way to theirs. Pitching seemed very haphazard, with people obscuring fire points. Why??
The site shop was compact but had the usual supplies you would expect. The local bacon was amazing. There was an offer to freeze ice blocks, at a charge of 20p per block, with proceeds to mountain rescue.
The toilet block was basic and only appeared to be cleaned once a day. Twice no loo roll. Loos starting to get unpleasant after the morning rush. Charge to use hair dryers. Charge to plug your straighteners in. Charge for showers, which we didn't bother to use. Shower cubicle small with no curtain/division between clothes and shower. The shower head came out of the ceiling so no option but to wash your hair.
Water hot unlimited in the dish washing room.
The water was an ominous brown colour. Would suggest treat yourself to bottled water from the well stocked Booths in Keswick.
On two out of three nights we were disturbed, despite the golden rule of silence after 10:30pm being pointed out on arrival. Once due to a vocal drunk and once by a group of young lads noisily returning to their tents at half two in the morning. They were noisy at about half six when they got up to go to work too.
The views from the site were superb, but the facilities were very basic. We did not visit the cafe.
An ideal base for someone who wants only basic facilities. We would be reluctant to stay again.
