This was our first time with our motorhome so we were a little bit dubious.
We arrived about 7 pm on the Friday and the reception was still open and had a very warm welcome.
We were shown our pitch on the map and it was easy to find.
The facilities were amazing with lots of toilets and showers which were really good.
We had our grand daughter with us and she enjoyed it, the only thing was that Criccieth was about a mile and half and she is not one for walking to far but with taxis and public transport we coped.
First visit to this site was recommended to us by a friend and was not disappointed. Toilet facilities extremely clean and site well looked after with nice friendly very helpful staff. Criccieth beach/town with in walking distance in one direction and Porthmadog in opposite direction with supermarket and various other
Play area with climbing frame etc for children and dog walking area for dogs which was used everyday by our max(dog). Would highly recommend site to other visitors will definitely be returning soon.
We have just stayed at this campsite, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The position is beautiful (where we were positioned, we could see both sea and mountains- we were able to choose where we wanted to pitch our tent). This is a great area with beautiful beaches and interesting local sights. The facilities are very good- toilets/showers are clean and there is a freezer for putting freezer blocks in. The owners were very helpful. There is lots of green space for children to play out on, as well as a nice play area. Great!
A big site that is well spaced out on tiers up the hillside. Pitches themselves are a good size and for vans are based on well packed down slate chippings. We had ehu but pitches are available without ehu.
The toilets and showers on the top level were shown as unisex which we wondered about. However pleasantly surprised as these were cubicles which opened out individually onto a path, they were very clean and well kept. No towels or hand dryers in the toilets and only cold water in the sinks. Showers take tokens which you buy for 20p from the wardens.
The only negative from us would be we had two different pitches either side of us playing football outside our van. There is a play area on site so would be good to enforce the use of this rather than footballs being kicked around pitches and hitting vans.
Overall this site exceeded our expectations as we usually find very large sites a bit soulless and less well kept. In this case the site is beautifully kept, brilliant views and we would use again when in the area.
We have just come back from a weekend at Eisteddfa, and were all delighted with this campsite. We are a family of 5, with children aged 8, 5 and 4. Firstly, the views for tents are outstanding. Mountains, sea, and fields. On the top field (Caenarfon)) the amazing views span 360 degrees. Even though it was full, being bank holiday weekend, there was plenty of space on the tent fields. The abundance of bracken gives the opportunity for privacy.
We had a bit of a walk (5 mins) to the shower block, but the view definitely made up for this. The shower block was basic but clean, and the dish washing facilities were excellent- very hot water.
The children's play areas were well positioned, and there were some woody areas to explore too.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, giving us some great tips for local beaches, and happy to charge our phones etc (for a very reasonable charity donation of 50p).
The local beach (criccieth) is mainly pebbly, and has some fabulous rock pools at low tide. The fish and chip shop sells lovely, very reasonably priced food.
Porthmadog has a fabulous green grocers and seems to be a very pretty town, we stopped through on our way to Borth y Gest (lovely little village and secret beaches about 20 mins from the campsite).
My only very small criticism is that much of the tent fields have a slight slant. But because you have so much space per pitch, you can ensure that your tent is pitched favourably, so it's not a problem.
In summary, I think this site is amazing. All too often campsites sound better on their website than the reality. This is the other way round. It was wonderful. And very very good value for money.
Absolutely fabulous! Lovely clean site and amazing facilities including showers, wet rooms, washer and dryer, kids indoor and outdoor activities and of course the fishing lakes.
A couple of miles from Criccieth town centre with a pleasent walk along with sea front and views of the castle.
The site has a brilliant friendly atmosphere at all times. The araes were all well maintained and all staff/wardens were extremely helpful and upbeat at all times.
We visited this site in May this year for a long weekend, and despite a mixture of weather we enjoyed the weekend immensely.
We had a warm welcome and the site wardens were very friendly and helpful. One night when the winds hit 50 miles per hour, the wardens checked on us at 1am to see if we were ok. Honestly you can't get better than that!
I thought the rates were very reasonable for the pitch and facilities on site. We have two dogs which were made welcome and were happy to abide by the site rules of keeping the dogs leashed but they have an amazing designated area to allow the dogs to run free and exercise.
We have visited Criccieth and Porthmadog for many many years and although we are frequent visitors to the USA we never get tired of the area, we have visited many campsites there and the Eisteddfa Caravan and Camping site has to be one of the best!
We shall be returning to the site early September for a week and we can't wait!
We've just returned home after yet another fabulous stay at Eisteddfa. Honestly didn't want to come home. Five of us stayed, two adults, & three children, aged 15, 13 & 8.
For the last few years we've used our own tent, but this summer, as a birthday surprise for the children we booked a Tipi. It was amazing. Yes, a bit more expensive than ordinary camping, but we found it worth every penny & even stayed an extra night as the weather was so great.
The tipi was spacious, with three futon beds. Two double & one single, which suited us just fine. There is a huge cool box, camping stove, pots, pans, plates, cutlery, & a large pine storage box for clothes &/or bedding. The best bit compared with an ordinary tent, is the wood burning stove, complete with a supply of logs & an axe ! If you run out, just ask for more & a bag full appears outside the door ! No washing up bowl to carry your pots down for washing, so we blew £1 on a bucket in Wilkinsons for this, no problem. No idea if there is power available, we didn't ask. Might be good if you want to charge phones or cameras. Our cameras lasted just fine & it was lovely to have no mobiles going off all day, such a shame we forgot the car chargers :) The joy of this kind of camping is no pitching or striking a tent, & obviously the need to take hardly anything with you but clothing & sleeping bags.
There are two tipis on site. We had the 'top' one, which is the larger of the two. You can park your car right next to it. There is a picnic bench right outside the front, great for breakfast in the sun, & loads of space for a bbq. The tipis are built on a floor of slate chippings, including half the internal floor for safety with the stove. This can be harsh on the toes, but making sure we had crocs handy was no problem. The other half is hessian flooring. We did find we had a few drips of rain inside, but only around the stove chimney & door. Considering the torrential storms we had every night it wasn't surprising !
The canvas of the tipi is thick & strong & definitely stands firm in the strongest storm. This does make it seem dark inside though, so take a good lantern or torches with you. We found a couple of glow sticks hung up at night gave a soft light if anyone needed a trip to the loo. This is a huge, very green site, & we did meet some of the 'locals' at night walking to the loo. Frogs & rabbits. Brilliant :)
There are two shower blocks. Both always immaculate. Showers are 20p for four minutes, always lovely & warm, so take a bag of change with you. Despite the site being pretty full we didn't have to queue for showers at all. There are plenty of sinks for pot washing, a large freezer for your ice blocks, plus a washing machine & tumble dryer. There are two parks. The little one by the entrance is shiny & new, however the one across the fields could do with a facelift too. There is also a games room which our lot enjoyed.
This is the friendliest site, with a well deserved great reputation. Both the owners & wardens work extremely hard to ensure it is always clean & well kept, nothing is too much trouble. It's also super quiet with amazing views.
It's a perfect base for exploring this part of Wales, though as the weather by day was so hot & sunny we didn't go far. Mostly beaches. Black Rock Sands is a short drive away, vast sandy expanse you can drive your car onto. Criccieth is a stony beach, but still beautiful with crabbing off the rocks, then take a walk around the town, visit the castle, watch the lifeboat being launched, & don't miss Castle fish & chips. There's almost always a queue right out the door, but it's worth the wait !
Breakfast at the Blue China cafe over looking the bay is a must too. Sit upstairs in the window & see if you can spot dolphins in the harbour while you eat.
We love the 'secret beach' at Borth Y Gest. Head for Black Rock Sands, the turn left into Borth Y Gest. Parking is free, but limited. There are public loos, scruffy, but useable. Then make sure you have everything you need, picnic, drinks, towels etc, as it's a ten minute trek along the headland on a sandy path. The walk obviously puts most people off, as it's never crowded. As the tide goes out it leaves masses of shallow pools for paddling, & soft sand for castle building. If you're a strong swimmer, you can swim to the island, or paddle there later as the tide retreats ! Lots of rocks for crabbing, so bring a net. Tip, buy a net in Porthmadog for 75p or be willing to part with £2. 50 for the same thing from the only shop in Borth Y Gest ! They know they have a monopoly & their prices are high !
The Welsh coastal walk follows this headland if you're feeling adventurous-take drinks though. There are also sand dunes for jumping. Not really pushchair friendly, unless you have a three wheeler all terrain buggy & are willing to tackle the steps onto the beach itself.
There are plenty of supermarkets as you drive into Porthmadog. Lidl & Aldi as you drive in from Criccieth, & Tesco-first left at the roundabout. There are lots of local markets & thousands of other things to do. The ladies in the Tourist information office on Porthmadog harbour are incredibly helpful. They'll look up anything for you online & phone ahead for you. They're also full of bargain ideas. Did you know you can go into Portmerion for half price after 3. 30pm ? We didn't. A five minute drive across the Cob & we had a fabulous afternoon, as they don't close until 7pm. Don't forget your camera !
If you want cheap family fun, go crabbing on Porthmadog harbour. Buy a black bucket for £1 from Wilkinsons, cheap nets or lines from the gift shop opposite Edinburgh woolen mill shop, & the cheapest supermarket bacon for bait. Tip. I cut the fat from bacon at home all year & keep it in the freezer especially for bait ! Then launch your lines into the harbour & wait. Our record was 182 crabs & two eels in less than two hours ! Then just throw them gently back to catch another day :)
We also visited Madog Quads. Ok, it's a portacabin with no loos down a dirt track in a field, BUT, it's fabulous fun ! The staff are great, you get a simple but effective safety briefing, then you take off round the fields. The instructor paces it slowly at first, then faster as you gain confidence. The kids voted this the most fun on wheels, ever !
So, another amazing holiday. Thankyou so much to all at Eisteddfa. Camping will never be the same again now we've been thoroughly spoilt with your tipi ! See you again next summer.
We arrived here just an hour after booking, having driven over to Wales as we hadn't decided where we wanted to stay before we left.
We were not disappointed.
We were warmly greeted on site and given information about where everything was and where we could camp. We were given a designated flat space but we chose Cricceith Field and found a slightly sloping spot which was absolutely fine and had a lovely view over cardigan bay and Cricceith castle.
There are 2 shower and toilet blocks on site - we only used one of them but found them to be extremely clean and modern with plenty of toilets and showers. We never had to wait for a shower. Showers are 20p for 4 mins. There is a hair dryer in the ladies which is 20p.
There is also a washing up area with a washing machine and tumble drier and a large freezer for ice packs which was excellent. There were a few books left for people to read which also worked great for me as I had forgotten mine!
Cricceith is a 25 min walk away and Porthmadog is around an hour (3miles) Its an easy walk and fine during the lovely weather. There is a bus stop outside the camp site but we found the bus very expensive £5. 60 for 2 single tickets!
The owners of the site were very friendly - even helping us with a jump start when we got a flat battery so many thanks! :)
We would definitely return here and would highly recommend it.
We have just returned from a lovely week at Eisteddfa campsite in North Wales. We were very lucky with the weather, so have not experienced the site in anything other than brilliant sunshine.
The site is in a beautiful area with lovely views of the hills and bay, is in a good position to explore North Wales and is only a few minutes drive from the coast. The owners/ wardens are very friendly and every time we saw any of them (which is often as the wardens go around the site frequently checking things are ok), they asked if we were alright which was a nice touch.
As mentioned in previous reviews, this site was excellent value for money and I didn't feel that they were trying to charge me extra for every little thing - quite the opposite in fact. We were given a double pitch for our large tent at no extra cost which I felt was very generous.
There are 2 play areas. The one next to reception is small but good and there is also an indoor games room here with a football table and pool table. The other play area was in need of some care and was too far to feel safe to let children play alone there. There is also a large area where dogs can be walked and ball games can be played which was nice.
The toilet blocks were clean and not busy while we were there. The only issue we had was there not being anything to dry your hands with but if you take your own towel with you each time this is not a problem. The separate unisex showers in the smaller block were very good - each had a private toilet, sink and shower with a large area to get changed and a stool for sitting or laying clothing on provided.
There is an indoor dishwashing area with a washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer for ice packs.
This site had an overall friendly, quiet and safe feel about it. We will definitely return.
Go Glamping ! stayed at Eisteddfa caravan and camping site at the end of June and it was fantastic. We stayed in a cocoon which was both spacious and value for money. The view from the cocoon is amazing as it looks out over the field, and although we had an evening of rain the cocoon was cozy inside. The toilet block is immaculate but you will need twenty pence coins for both the shower and the hair dryer. The wardens/ owners of the site are spot on as they are helpful but not overbearing. The site is a twenty minute walk to criccieth or the beach and makes for a cracking stay in a good location. Enjoy your stay x
Sorry to read about the bad experience of the previous reviewer.
All I can say is that we have always had great stays at Eisteddfa and can highly recommend the site to everyone! Our 'neighbours' on the adjoining pitch this week and new to this site, stated that they would be definitely returning in the future.
The site is well kept, the staff have always been very helpful, the owners are friendly and accommodating. Never had any problems with the facilities, the grounds are neat and tidy, has great views and is handy for Criccieth and Porthmadog and all the visitor attractions of that part of Wales, not to mention the wonderful surrounding countryside.
We are new to caravanning & picked this site due to the good reviews on here. We know this area extremely well & have spent many many years on holiday on the Llyn. I am pretty sure whoever we booked with is no longer on the site we didn't get the helpful welcome we had over the phone when booking. We where dismissed after explaining our problems with our pitch on arrival. Our pitch was dark & close to a wooded area. If it had of been warm at night the midges would have eaten us up had we sat out. All the other pitches were in sunnier positions. We only managed to stay one night instead of a week. We came home without a shower, it was very basic & cold in the toilet block although clean. The site was quiet though. This site might be better for experienced campers prepared to rough it a bit or those with better caravans/tents than we had. We still love the Llyn though nothing can ruin that! Wardens really let us down they are not good enough for this job :(
Management response: After reading our visitors review and seeing it from their perspective, I can understand that being excited to try out caravanning for their first time, they may have been disappointed in the fact that the weather over the spring bank period was anything but Spring and we knew that the lady was concerned as it was cold and wet as her daughter suffers from a heart condition, had we not been fully booked on our electric pitches the party could of course have been moved, we did have other pitches available but without electric. I do haste to add that we always let people know that the area near the forest is shaded and nearer to the road so that they have a fully informed idea of the area in question, interesting enough though is the fact that we have people year in year out who actually request that pitch as it is quaint and offers an intimate space to enjoy the forest. It goes without saying that we always try and make our visitors experience a positive one as they deserve to enjoy their holiday and have many visitors who book year in year out as they enjoy natural beauty, cleanliness and hospitality that our site offers. We hope that the family can see that we couldn’t have done anymore due to being fully booked.
My wife and myself stayed here for 5 nights early October in a small tourer. It was a very impressive site with grass and hardstanding pitches and quite spectacular views. Dave the warden was very friendly and helpful and made us welcome. We both loved the site and nearby Criccieth and I would highly recommend the site to anyone.
I will be going back.
We could not find you when we left and we wanted to say thanks and good luck with your up and coming family events. Take care.
Upon arrival (in the pouring rain) we we greeted by the owner. We were directed to The lower cul-de-sac which we had pre booked for our group (2 Large Tents and a Caravan Which unfortunately had to cancel).
We were advised not to pull the cars right down on the grass as the rain had made it very soft under foot and as the cul-de-sac was down a slight slope.
We were advised that we could use the grass but recommended using the hard standing pitches which were covered with slate. I was a little apprehensive but the owner offered us the loan of extra tarps to put under our foot prints. We opted for this and we had no problems with the tent floors with rips etc (just wasn't the same as walking with grass underfoot). As the Rain continued pouring down and the tent was getting quite heavy to put up the owner was at hand to give us a much appreciated helping hand.
The site itself is very well kept,
We were located near the lower toilet and shower blocks. These were kept clean all the time. (it seemed as though there was someone cleaning it every time I used them) The showers had a charge of 20p for 4 mins but it seemed like you got more time than this and the water was always hot.
The pot washing area was also indoors and had 4 sinks a freezer for ice blocks and a washer and a dryer for clothing to use for a fee. Just one word of warning. The HOT water in this area was extremely hot to the point of scolding hot.
There was a small playground and a small building with a pool and football table in (think there was a charge for the tables) for the kids to use.
The site is located in an ideal position for exploring the local are.
Criccieth is a 2 min car ride away with a little High street and a Spar. There is beautiful fish and chip shop at the top of the hill near the castle and Amazing Ice-cream palour straight opposite.
Porthmadog is abot a 5-10 min drive away. It has a large Tesco, Aldi And lidl. It has the station there for the ffestiniog railway, and a high street with a few shops on, the marina area is great for crabbing off (144 crabs in a few hours).
We also visited Caernarvon, Pwllheli, and Anglesey sea zoo. Which are all within an easy drive.
We had a great time here and the owners were more than helpful. We will definitely using this site again.
