Formby Point Caravan Park comprises mostly mobile homes and is located in woodlands sandwiched between the opulent dormitory suburbs of Formby itself and the dunes that front Liverpool Bay. However, there is a small, open field adjacent the dunes with hard-standing hook-up plots for about a dozen touring caravans, as well as a few plots beneath shady pine trees that seem to be popular with motorhome campers.
Entrance to the site is off Lifeboat Road and then through a single track pinch point controlled by a barrier that is lowered at night. Therefore, exit from the site will require a barrier swipe card obtained from reception when you check in (for which there is a £20 deposit payable).
The toilet and shower block on the touring site is clean and well-maintained, even if the décor is not perhaps quite to the latest standard. Entrance to both the main door and the cubicles is by way of a key (for which there is a £2 deposit payable) and the showers work on a coin meter. There is an elsan point alongside the block. Each caravan plot has a large raised drainage pipe into which to tip waste water (and which rather resemble the tunnels in 'The Time Machine' into which H G Wells' intrepid time traveller climbed in order to rescue his century-hopping chariot back from the Morlocks!). The main drinking water tap is situated in the middle of the touring field.
In terms of local amenities, Formby possesses a pleasant 'town centre' with lots of small independent traders and a selection of supermarkets (there is a larger Tesco superstore situated nearby on the main A565 by-pass). Otherwise, Crosby, Southport and Ormskirk are the nearest alternative shopping destinations, the latter boasting a lively Thursday market.
However, the ultimate day out involves purchasing an unbeatable value £4. 80 Saveaway day ticket at Formby Station (a twenty minute walk from the site or there are park-and-ride facilities available) and taking the frequent trains into Liverpool - that rich historic and cultural hub that includes the many museums that spangle the city's iconic waterfront. Once there you can then use your Saveaway ticket on local buses and trains on both sides of the river, as well as on the Mersey ferries. You can even change trains and journey out to Chester on it too!
If you're staying closer to the site, then Formby Point itself is great for exploring on foot or by bike. Indeed, it is one of England's few remaining habitats where red squirrels can be spotted. Paths lead from the site out onto both the dunes and the country park; and once on the beach one can either play in the sand, or find a convenient promontory on the dunes from which to watch the ships come and go (on a clear day you can even spot Blackpool Tower in the distance!), or just stroll or cycle along a wide expanse of unbroken sands that stretches north all the way up to Ainsdale and Southport.
We stayed at Formby Point Caravan Park during a spell of reasonably warm weather at the end of September, and found it a most pleasant and relaxing week. At £17 per night for three people we therefore thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheaper, yet no less spectacular alternative to the more expensive seafront campsites to be found on England's south or south-west coasts.
Stayed for one night in mid July. Found it quite difficult to find the site. More signs would be useful. On arrival we were faced with a barrier, alongside which was a sign asking us to park in the adjacent lay by and go to reception for a barrier pass. The lay by was big enough for a Mini but no way big enough for a mondeo and an 8m caravan! Being a single track entrance road I abandoned the outfit, blocking the road, and went looking for the reception. Again a lack of signs indicating where reception was led to some frustration until a woman needing out of the site kindly opened the barrier and let us in. Once inside we found reception and booking in was simple enough. As previously mentioned we were given one key for the toilet block which was a bit tired to be honest and could do with a spruce up. Having to unlock the external door and internal cubical doors was a bit pointless and could be organised better. The site appears to be mainly statics which have been there for some time and a small number of touring pitches at the rear of the site near the sand dunes. Each pitch has its own waste water disposal point which consists of an 18' high clay pipe of about 18' diameter. This meant lifting a 40l waste master tank up 18'to empty it. Something the less able bodied would struggle with. Overall with some minor changes this could be a good site as the location has potential. Access needs to be looked at though.
Had a great time, it was a short visit, Thursday afternoon till 6pm on Friday. Took my mum and sister and the 3 dogs it was so peaceful and close to the beach and a short drive to the shops. The owners were very nice and accommodating letting us stay nearly all day Friday with no extra cost. Will be going again very soon hopefully. The toilets and showers were warm and very clean. We were able to set up where ever we wanted, and it was easy to find
Lovely Bank Holiday week at this site. Stayed 24th May-1st June. Apparently you can get on site before 12 and you are not asked to be off site till 4 o clock when departing. Location is well signposted, very easy to get to, although the entrance road to the site is also used to get public car access to the beach. As it is only single width with passing places and is not one way you can end up waiting a bit to get in or out should you suffer a spate of inconsiderate car users.
Site entrance itself is barrier control with keycard for security. Barrier left up during the day but although you don't need your card to get out you will need it to get back in after five or six oclock.
No shop or pub on site however off licence convenience store and chippy are all located on the left a mile or so before you reach the site. Staff very friendly, however I suggest on arrival YOU PARK UP OUTSIDE RECEPTION AND FIRST WALK THE ROUTE TO YOUR PITCH!. There are not enough signs and it is very easy to get trapped amongst the statics of which there is a considerable number. This apparently happens all too often. BETTER SIGNS NEEDED.
Toilets shower blocks may be dated but I understand modernisation has taken place in the ladies and presumably the gents to follow. Irrespective of this as a family we always found the showers and toilets were kept very clean and tidy. Site very well maintained although no playground there was NO TRACE OF LITTER OR THE DREADED DOG POO!
Two places to pitch, (all hook up no problems at all with power supply) next to each other, either under the pine trees (tv reception not affected) or in a bank of pitches that are fenced off. There is a path running from the pine trees that takes you 10-15 mins through countryside over the dunes onto a very nice beach. There also many different well signposted walks around this area as well. If you have kids and dogs this is obviously spot on.
Big Tesco with petrol station 3 or 4 miles away Southport 10 miles away (nice gardens, traditional high street shops, as well as modern retail park and Pleasureland amusements) Crosby 4 miles away with the statues standing out of the water (take the back road for the scenery and a couple of great pubs) We paid £20 night for caravan awning 2 kids 2 dogs, and are booked to go back again already!
Just spent another wonderful weekend at Formby. Probably spent about 20+ weekends here over the last 3 years. Very relaxing site with excellent access to the sand dunes and beach. Ladies toilet block has been updated over the winter and now has more spacious showers with new tiling, looks 100% better than before - 20p for approx 5 mins showering.
Great site for dog walking. About 30mins walk into Formby village for shopping and also good bus service about 5 mins walk from site entrance.
Formby train station is about 15 mins walk where you can get regular trains to Liverpool in one direction or Southport the other direction if you don't want to use your vehicle. Also near to the station is a pub that does good food and seems very popular with local people.
Will spend many more weekends here before the season ends - usually have much better weather than at home too! Would say that this is our most favourite site, we always feel at home and relaxed when we arrive.
This touring site offers spectacular views towards the Lake District and Morecambe Bay, with Blackpool Tower also in the distance, yet located just over 3 miles from Junctions 34 and 35 of the M6 motorway. Visitors will find just 10 electric pitches for motorhomes and touring caravans, with access to the superfast Wifi, toilets with sinks, a shower room and fresh water taps. Dogs are allowed and there is a designated field for walks.
The local village of Halton is a mile away from the site, offering a convenience store, newsagent, pharmacy, post office and fish and chip shop. The market town of Carnforth is 3 miles away, with its train station (featured in the 1945 film Brief Encounter) and supermarkets. The seaside resort of Morecambe is within 5 miles and the Lake District is only 35-minutes drive. Find out more here
We have just arrived home from are stay at this site, We found it very clean and tidy, It was quiet. The toilets and showers were very clean.
We had a stroll to the beach with our two dogs. We went over the sand dunes which is ok for youngsters, But it was are mistake we should have asked someone for the flatest route. We should have gone through the main gates at the campsite and walked down the road, it was much better for us oldies, Ha.
Will come back again as the staff were very nice. The weather was bad so we came home. In all It is great for walkers and dogs love it. The beach is about 20 mins walking round the flat way, But about 10 to 15 mins over the sand dunes. I have been to other sites that have more facilities, but are more pricey, you only get what you pay for and this was a fair price for this site £17 a night.
There are lots of charity shops in formby village they are very clean, They just look like normal clothes shops, They have a lot of classy stuff in them. Thanks once again Margaret.
We were not impressed with this site. The toilet block was very old and grubby, we were given 1 key for the toilet/shower blocks, which had to open not just the outside door, but the internal shower and separate toilet doors too, and the only way to lock these doors was with the key, so if 2 of you want to use the facilities at the same time it was tough! The lights were on a sensor and turned themselves off a couple of times whilst I was in there. The ground at the side of the pitch was just a mess, no grass as such (whatever it was, was yellow and black) and you had to pay £3 extra per night for the honour of putting a porch awning on it! The beach is a good walk away over sand-dunes, I was told it was a 15-20 minute walk which we didn't make because of disabilities. At £21 per night (including Awning cost), we will not be returning
Stayed here for two nights. Wonderful, we really enjoyed the stay. Would recommend it. Formby is a pleasant little town about 1. 5 miles from the site. The site itself is in a secluded and peaceful location backing on to the sand dunes, ideal for
Dog walking The Washrooms are a little dated but very clean. The site has quite a number of static Caravans which you pass on the way to the tourer
Area. There you can either park and hook up under
The Pine Trees or go a little further past into the open and hook up on well spaced hard stand pitches. Will return to this site again.
Just returned from a two day stay at this site with our two grand daughters, aged 4 and 6 years.
Can thoroughly recommend it, safe, quiet, a short walk over the dunes to the beach and sea, what more could we ask for.
Yes the toilet/shower block is a little dated but it was clean at all times with plenty of hot water in the showers for a small 20p charge. Will definitely be back.
Power never tripped once and the owners were so friendly and helpful - were even waiting for us with a friendly wave on arrival.
Me and the dog stayed here Tue-Fri at the end of May 2012. Luckily we had amazing weather which I'm sure helped make the stay perfect.
It cost £17 a night for me and the dog and the Campervan and the key for the showers/toilet block £2 refundable.
The site is mainly for statics, and I found finding reception a bit tricky - it's the brown glass fronted building - drive in, then bear right and it's on the left.
All spots have hook ups. There are about 8 which aren't hard standing- under the line trees right near to the exit to the dunes.
The others are in an oblong shaped field which is fenced to each side- there are about 20 ish pitches here. It does say 'no ball games' and I imagine if it was full (it wasn't when I was there) there wouldn't be much space for ball games anyway!
The exit to the dunes near the non hard standing plots leads literally into the dunes then the beach is about a 5 minute walk! There is another gateway out which leads to the woods on the other side of Lifeboat Road.
The toilet block is dated but it's clean and must have maybe 15 toilets and 5 showers. There are no hair driers just the one Dyson blade hand drier - good luck drying your hair in that!
No washing up facilities - but this was made clear on booking.
No on-site shop - I recalled passing a one stop type shop just down lifeboat road.
Perfect for those whose dogs love the sea and the sand!
Also (it was midweek) I could get there from 1030am and leave as late as 4!

Just been to this site for a two night stay, what a nice clean peaceful site, although the toilets are dated there are still showers and toilets and are very clean and can use them without any problem for what they are meant to be used for.
We had so much fun just walking through the sand dunes and going on the beach, our 7 yr old and George our family dog just loved it.
The owner greeted us on arrival and £18 a night is not bad at all for a bank holiday weekend.
We also went walking through the woods, didn't see any red squirrels on this occasion, but we will be returning to hope to see some then.
The power supply I read was not up to scratch, but we had heating on, extra fridge for beer (husky fridge),the tv on, also the wii plugged in and lighting on and had no problems with the supply whatsoever.
Can't go again this year got holidays booked for the year but come December will be ringing and booking a few breaks.
We visited this site after coming home from a disaster in Anglesey.
The weather had taken a turn for the better so we chose this site for 2 reasons, 1, it's near Liverpool where we fancied visiting and 2, it's right on the sand dunes.
The site does not have anything, no shop, bar, club - just caravans, and for that reason, it's perfect and it's absolutley immaculate, I didn't see any rubbish or dog mess anywhere! :)
We were just going for the weekend, the touring section - which relatively speaking is only a tiny percent of the whole park, is neatly tucked away, right by the entrance to the sand dunes, The sand dunes are totally amazing and we spent hours on them. Although the caravan site was part of the squirrel sanctuary, we didn't see any squirrels :( We did however get to see Anthony Gormley's sea installation which is situated in quaint Crosby just up the road.
It's a great private, secluded, quiet site and I loved the owner too - full of character and information. Couldn't recommend enough. If you are looking for an all singing all dancing site, this is NOT for you !
Spent 2 nights here with my daughter (11) and her friend and our puppy Meg. After reading the reviews I was a little wary about taking the children but to be honest it was fine. Where the tourers are its not even a minute walk to the path to the sand dunes and there's plenty of room on the grass to play ball games. I don't mind the children having to be in ( or not running around the site) at 9pm. The electric did trip out once but that was because of our neighbour on the same bollard.
Yes the toilet block is dated but it serves it's purpose and they have installed some fancy handriers now. Staff were very pleasant.
It is situated in a lovely area and within easy driving distance of Southport and Liverpool.
It is wonderfully located for Formby sand dunes and beach, Liverpool and Southport. There are plenty of pubs & shops within a short drive and the railway station is a 20 min walk, with cheap good connections as far as Chester.
The staff were extremely friendly, and very helpful in suggesting visits, and how to see the red squirrels etc.
We don't have any sanitary facilities in the van and unfortunately those on the site are a bit 1950'ish, but clean. The use of a key for the door, WCs and showers is a pain. There is no soap for a quick hand wash, and no hand driers.
There are no facilities for washing dishes or laundry. (To be fair, this was explained to me on booking). We also had to explore a bit to find the fresh water.
It was however a generally great week and I would love to see the facilities improved to enable campers to fully enjoy this lovely area.
