An excellent campsite, suitable for tourers, campers and tents. We arrived Friday evening and got a place no problem with electricity. It's very relaxed - you pay and pitch where you like! Facilities are basic but well maintained and there was always hot water and no queues. The farmhouse sells essentials such as sweets, drinks, eggs, milk etc. They have a catering van that sells lovely breakfast rolls in the morning, which are well worth a try.

The location of the site is superb: pitches overlook a fast flowing stream and the site is amongst amazing mountain scenery. The path to Helvellyn via Striding Edge passes through the site. The nearest pub is a minutes walk away and more pubs, restaurants and shops are a further few minutes down the road. All pubs serve good food and drinks.

I will certainly return to this site. They now how camping is supposed to be done!

Spent a short weekend at the campsite and have to say that this is one of the best campsites I have been to in a longtime!

Although the facilities are very basic they are more than adequate. Remember to bring 20p for the showers!

The views are spectacular with the beginning of helvellyn literally meters away! surrounded by mountains and conveniently located 5-10minute walk to the nearest pub! Glenridding which is the nearest village have a few gift shops and convenience stores with even more pubs!

Helvellyn itself is a must do mountain! I did the striding edge path and for a bloke who has vertigo it was a big rush! I think one can conquer their fears up there. Beware the striding edge is not for the faint hearted, there are some very steep climbs and you do have to do a little bit of rock climbing!

Overall I will definitely recommend this site, and will definitely go again!

On arriving you have to park on a hill and walk up to the reception, there is only room for a couple of cars at that point so high season could get a bit awkward especially if you have a trailer. The owners are pleasant working farmers and happy to talk anytime. The site is well maintained, shower block is basic but clean and showers take 20p. Hot and Cold snack van next to the river comes in handy if you don't want to cook brekkie before you leave. Pub 5 minutes walk away, if your looking to shelter in there from the rain you might be disappointed as it is very small and dark inside, plenty of outdoor seating if nice. Nice short walk from the site down the riverside to local well stocked shops. No play area on site for kids but ours spent most of the time playing in the river, so take plenty of towels. If you are taking young kids beware that this site is popular with groups of walkers/ climbers who like to party a bit after a good walk - nothing crazy, but it can be early hours before the site goes quiet. Location and views are fantastic, we would go again but but not in school holidays.

This is a great site. Fabulous sights and walks near by. The site is based at the foot of hellvelyn and easy walk down to glenridding and to the lake shore. We camped by the river.
Pub 5 min walk away sells good food and ale athough its usually quite busy.

Just came back from a lovely weekend at the site. The rain didn't put us off at all. Even though the site was full there was still plenty of space. We decided to camp on the hill the scenery is absolutely magnificent, be careful however walking down that hill to the toilet block, it gets slippy in the rain :-). Amenities very basic and no hot water after 9 but that didn't affect us too much. There's nice little walk to the village where there is some lovely little shops and pubs. The staff are very friendly and we will definatly be staying again in the near future.

A nice little campsite with very friendly staff. Only stayed one night and would liked to have stayed longer. Its main draw is the location set among some beautiful mountain scenery and close to Ullswater. The walking and rock climbing are great and the nearby pub serves real ale and good food.

The best view you can imagine, site fine, amenities basic and relatively clean, don't think the toilet block was heated, so a little off putting after a lovely hot shower (20p piece)to be freezing when you turn off the water and get ready. Plenty of hot water though. Shower cubicle had no curtain so be careful when showering other wise your clothes can get splashed (or soaked). Road from Glenridding is only a little lane with dry stone walls and would probably be unforgiving if you brushed a stone, a little care is needed with big vans, hopefully you will not meet anything large coming the other way. Local pub seemed to have good meals, but was always very busy, we tried to find a local chip shop one night and ended up in Windermere some 15 miles away. All in all an enjoyable weekend.

We've stayed at this campsite a couple of times now and it's perfect for our needs. Hot showers for only 20p, spotlessly clean and simple toilet blocks that aren't obtrusive and direct access to some of the best walking in the Lakes.  The Lightfoot family all work extremely hard to make the site what it is whilst running their farm.
The lady who looks after the camping fees is wonderful to chat with and always interested in what sort of day you've had.  It's also reassuring if you're up on the high fells each day to know that she and her family appear to keep an eye out for your safe return without affecting your privacy at all.
If you're lucky enough to visit in early September after the schools go back, it's great.  Can't wait to go back next year.

Just returned from two wet and windy nights at Gillside. Having said that that lovely site with fantastic views and just the right level of amenities. We arrived Monday mid afternoon and had no problem finding a pitch ( schools back etc). Has been said before camping field on two tiers, we went on the lower one as ground was wet and wondered about car making it to top level. Toilets and showers clean, plenty of hot water and lenghty showers for 20p. Meter for shower on outside of cubicle, be prepared to strip off and then stick your arm out to put your 20p in meter. There was a Belfast sink in toilets, which came in handy for bathing smaller children I noticed. Good pot washing area under cover.
There is no play areas as such but the top tier of the camping field is flat and plenty of room for games and kite flying.
The stream was in full flood and very noisy at night, and it was very windy at night. We didn't eat at either of the local pubs but had a good cream tea at the coffee shop next to Ratchers pub.
The walking is superb and there are the old mines just up the road. Will be back.

Visited this site last year and had been before it really is a great location! Only minutes away from the village so you don't have to drive anywhere Else if you don't want to. Village has lovely shops and a few pubs. there is also a lake land cruise and rowing boats for hire. The site itself is fine, the toilet blocks are concrete block so not the poshest, but this is a campsite! Does have electrical points as well. You can buy milk, eggs and snacks (Crisps and chocolate) from the farm shop on the top of the campsite.

Fnally there is usually a breakfast van which provides hot food for you to buy in the morning if you wish, located on the campsite. Suitable for all a great campsite in one of the best locations. Only 9 miles from Pooley Bridge and close to the little village of patterdale.
