Back yet again! I am always drawn to Barnard castle and to this site.
Staff very friendly and accommodating. They keep the site very clean.
The WiFi continues to be intermittent even when the site is not full.
Will probably be back later in the year!

This is a very pleasant, quiet site. Pitches are large andainly level with a mix of grass and hardstandings
The facilities are of a good standard, and not under pressure. There are enough toilets and showers, although they may be under pressure if the site was full.
Our only criticism would be that the WIFI signal was a bit intermittent. Also, we didn't see a children's play area, which would have made it more family friendly.
We used this site so that we could go walking. The circular walk from Bowlees to Low and High Force was very good and about 5 miles.
Raby castle is an interesting place historically, and we were treated to a fascinating guided tour of the gardens by a horticulturist.
We spent a very wet day in the Bowes musrum, well worth a visit and it has a good restaurant too.
We liked the town of Barnard castle, we went round the castle and tried out some of the many coffee shops.
We can recommend the Fox and Hounds at Cotherstone where we had an excellent Sunday roast.

I last reviewed this site in August 2018. Much of what I wrote then still applies but pleased to report that the pot holed approach road is now smooth tarmac, the grass was not aggressively cut and the hairdryer in the ladies is mended.
On the downside: no sign of a chip van, the site shop is now only a few tins, biscuits & ice creams and the gents was reportedly clean but "rather smelly".
Staff friendly.
Good choice of pitches.
Site wifi a little patchy: usable for basic internet stuff but nothing too complicated. Vodaphone mobile phone signal weak.
Barnard castle has all the facilities you might need - parking looked complicated but it is a nice off road 45 min walk from the site, though mainly uphill on the way back. Walking boots needed if it is wet.
Site quiet at night: only the neighbouring sheep making a noise!

Green, well-kept site, as you would expect from the Camping and Caravanning Club. Friendly, helpful site managers.
Pitch was a decent size and the site was quiet, despite the fact that it was pretty busy for a lot of the time.
It was outside school holidays, so few children. There are toilets, family bathroom, laundry, dishwashing sinks, dog walking field, though not for dogs to be let off the lead. Showers need updating, if I'm being picky.
Beware the 'short walk' into Barnard castle town, as it took us 50 minutes and we are not slow strollers! Very pleasant walk, though, through old woodland.
We liked Barnard castle - perfect for tourists, as it has more cafes than you can shake a stick at, and most very good, so hard to choose! Lidl, Morrisons.
We visited places around more than we would normally, as it is far from home.
Richmond was lovely and so was Saltburn on Sea - best ice cream ever from the shop on the prom: apricot and ginger (me) and blueberry and clotted cream.

Back again! Had a grass pitch and had the choice of a few. We had the added bonus of beautiful weather.
The wardens were very friendly and helpful.
The site Wifi still has not improved even when the site was quite empty.
We did the walk through the farm and woods into Barnard castle for the first time in many years and found that the path was much improved.
We also thought that the pigs may have gone from the farm as there was no noise when passing and the smell has subsided somewhat.
No doubt we will be back.

Was only meant to stay 2 night as a stopover on the way back from Scotland but my stopover on the way was cancelled due to flooding so ended up here both ways.
Nice little site with easy check in. I’d booked grass with electric but was recommended to upgrade as the grass was pretty soggy, no pressure but I was glad of the suggestion and that I took it up.
No where on site is far from the toilet block, which were kept immaculately clean and the showers were great, no horrid push buttons but plenty of hot water.
Added bonus was the short dog walk, especially on the way back when we wanted a rest day!
We were also treated to a lovely aurora show, and a farmers market in Barnard castle.
Lovely stay thank you.

Back again for a short break.
The wardens were very friendly and helpful.
The facilities were very clean and warm.
The wifi continued to be very intermittent despite the campsite being less than half full for the first two nights.
Paid just less that £72 for 3 nights with the oldies discount, thought this was excellent value.
Found a new walk to Barnard castle via the public footpath through Lartington Hall - has fewer hills but it's impossible to miss the ones leading out/into the campsite and Barnard castle.
Will no doubt be visiting again.

Well laid out very quiet campsite.
Facilities are clean and modern. Wardens are great.
Nice walk through the woods into town although if you’re a bit uneasy on your feet it could be a little difficult.

Excellent, large snd well maintained club site within walking distance of Barnard castle town centre.
The town is worth visiting and has everything you need. This site also makes a great base for exploring Teesdale - High Force, Middleton and many good walks in good reach.
Facilities are immaculate and modern.

Back again! This time on a grass pitch. We had a choice of a few.
The wardens were very friendly and helpful. It's possible that there may be more grass pitches available in the future as all of the ready camp tents have now gone and they have reseeded the areas where they were.
The site Wifi has still not improved so just used our mobiles as hotspots.
The big winner for us was that there was a spectacular view of the Aurora Borealis from the site whilst we were there. It's the first time we have seen them and it was absolutely magical.
We didn't do it this time but if you can get parked at Bowlees Visitor Centre near Middleton in Teesdale then there is a lovely walk along the river past Low Force to High Force.

Very warm welcome and super helpful friendly wardens.
Beautifully kept site although could.
To avoid churning up the grass to get onto the shortish but wide pitch -
Wash rooms sooo warm and spotlessly clean.
Washing up area in a warm room too.

Back again for another visit to the site and an area we know quite well. Much is the same as it was for our last visit except we were given a choice of pitches.
Last time we were there I mentioned the poor condition of the approach road, well this has been massively improved. The road had been resurfaced and not a pot hole to be found.
As we are eligible for an age concession the cost was less than £22, which we thought was excellent value.
Only disappointment was that the wifi was not very good whilst we were there.

This was our first caravanning experience so have nothing to compare with but the site was extremely well kept with excellent facilities and very helpful and friendly staff.
The only downside was the WiFi, we had it for the 1st day then nothing for 6 days.
The staff said they were waiting for it to be fixed but it never was, very disappointing.
Overall a very god experience.

As with most C & CC sites the pitches are great and facilities very clean etc. It is a quiet site with all kinds of of bird and wildlife if you care to be quiet and observe.
The walk into Barnard castle through the farm and wood is thoroughly enjoyable but can be taxing on the elderly and infirm.
The bus service from outside the entrance is great and less work on the legs.
My biggest criticism of our stay was the smell from the pig farm at the bottom of the site which almost made us leave early and certainly made mealtimes hard work as the smell was disgusting. It must be remembered however that this was not in the C & CC control.

Pleasant and quiet site. 1. 5 mile walk through a nature reserve, to Barnard castle.
Level pitches with good facilities, if a little tired.
Very pleasant staff on site, good TV signal & 4g signal was OK. Couldn't connect to the site WIFI.
