We spent five days on this peaceful, off-the-beaten-track site and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. They have all the spotlessly clean facilities we have come to expect at Camping and Caravanning Club Sites. Set in beautiful countryside with plenty of walks from and nearby the site. We will certainly be returning again, hopefully often!
Not stayed on site before. Friendly and helpful wardens. Stayed for 4 nights. Good toilet block. Good showers. Good dog walk too. Very quite site. On a clear night good view of star's in the sky. ( no light polution) Barnard Castle nice town. The Castle is also worth a visit. (english heritage) we visited swaledale. Wensleydale. Hawes. Etc. Well worth another visit to area. 4 nights OAP rate £44.
Stayed here over the Easter weekend. It is a nice site, not far from the town. The walk to town was a bit muddy and steepish in places but the chance of seeing wild deer makes it worth it.
The welcome is friendly and the facilities very good and clean. Although, it was wet when I arrived and the ground a bit boggy, the following day the ground was very firm.
Did a weekend visit to the site, arriving Friday evening. Friendly welcome from wardens and shown to pitch. Site was reasonably busy but not full and warden made sure we were happy with the pitch. Facilities are typical of Camping and Caravan Club sites. This one has a small play area for children which was OK for younger children. Toilet / Shower block was clean (closed at 11am for 90 mins daily cleaning) and had adequate numbers of showers / toilets / washing cubicles for the size of the site but was a little barn like with high roof and quite noisy almost industrial extractors.
Pizza van visits Friday evening (not tried but reputedly good) and Fish and Chip van on Wednesday and Saturday evenings which we did try. This has a deserved excellent reputation which results in a long queue - but well worth the wait.
There is a small shop at reception which sell basics but otherwise there are no shops / pubs etc nearby - others have mentioned the access road as being difficult but we had no problem (there are a good number of passing places on this single track road) and a bus stop on the main road near the access road - bus timetables from the wardens.
There is a lovely walk along paths into Barnard Castle which goes through Deepdale Nature Reserve and the wardens have produced a sheet with detailed instructions so you don't get lost - well worth 20p. The walk is about 1. 5 miles and would be muddy in a few places after rain.
Barnard Castle has a large range of cafes, coffee / tea rooms and pubs as well as interesting (non-chain) shops.
Would we use the site again - yes.
The site was quiet as befitting the tranquil setting.
Great site with good facilities and very friendly staff. Only stayed one night as we were heading to Durham but would definitely stay here again. Very clean toilets etc. Extra plus was the chip van which came on the Saturday night. Queue was enormous but everyone was in good humour and we had several nice conversations while waiting.
A small quiet touring park sitting alongside the River Wear, in a central location for for visiting all the attractions County Durham has to offer. 21 hardstandings and 1 grass pitch all with electric points, for caravans and motorhomes. Shower and Toilet Block and accessible / family shower room. Washing up area. Fresh water point, waste water point, chemical disposal point.
All the facilities of Wolsingham town are within easy walking distance. On site caravan accessory and awning shop and caravan workshop! Dogs are very welcome and there are many walks directly from the site, and it's five minutes to lovely riverside walks. Find out more here
Great site with good facilities and very friendly staff. We stayed for two nights on our way back home. We enjoyed the walk into Barny with its variety of shops and pubs, it took us about 40 minutes but was well worth it. We would definitely stay here again.
The toilets were very clean and the showers were hot. The chip van which came on a Wednesday and Saturday night was a bonus, the queue was enormous but everyone waited patiently and in good humour. The fish and chips were the best I have had in along time and well worth the wait
We stayed at Barnard castle camping and caravan site from 21-06-14 to the 04-07-14. We travelled up from Lincolnshire and our friends from Derbyshire, the entrance/ exit route for the site is approximately half a mile of single track road with passing places, shared with the farm behind the site, that said we had no problems with traffic over our stay. The site itself is security barrier protected at both entrance and exit routes and operates a one way system for traffic on site. We had a touring caravan and our friends a family tent for our stay. And requested 2 pitches side-by-side and were successful. There is a small camp shop which was reasonably priced, the staff were always friendly and helpful, the facilities were we thought of a good standard, and very clean, we never had any problems with the hot water, there is only one facilities block on site, water/rubbish points were not too far away no matter which pitch you had. There is a dog walking area behind the shower block but it is not totally secure unlike some sites we've visited. There's an information area under cover outside the camp shop. We took a walk to 'barny' along the route obtained from the camp shop, it's a great walk but it's a 'walkers' walk, not a stroll, but well worth it the dogs enjoyed it. Barnard Castle is a gem of a town, and the castle ruins give some nice views of the area, there's a supermarket (Morrisons) in the town, plenty of pubs and cafés, we found plenty to do even though limited to where we could go by having the dogs with us. A great site to give access to North Yorkshire and Co Durham, we visited Durham another very nice City. Would definitely recommend timing your visit to coincide with the Miners Gala held annually. Great site, great staff, we would recommend this site we had a great holiday, thank you. We would give the site a 9/10
My husband and I stayed here for two nights midweek. The site is very well maintained and quite level. They offer all types of pitches from tents to hard standing with electric (no water hook ups).
There isn't really much to say other than its a quiet site which is not within walking distance of the gorgeous Barnard Castle.
One tiny let down. The wardens were unable to suggest a local pub to watch the football because they don't go out. I'm on holiday! I'm not asking you to come just to provide me with local info. :)
We stayed at this campsite for 2 weeks in June. We were welcomed by a very friendly team and given a choice of hard standings (previously booked)and the site manager helped us position our van and pointed out where everything was - especially the dog walk and also how to walk into 'Barney'. The site was very well presented, toilets and showers very clean (we did not have to queue at all) and the staff seemed to be constantly working around the site. The mobile fish and chip van was excellent with freshly cooked food - yes, there was a queue but it was worth the wait and the next visit we made sure that one of us was at the front. The ONLY complaint was the useless Wi-Fi - VERY poor coverage (hence 9 out of ten). Apart from that a great fortnight.

This site is off the main road but far off enough not to hear traffic. Clean and flat and the site has a one way system so it's relatively safe for wandering kids. However the site was dominated by the road and although there was a kids playground, it was pinned in by roads at either side and the site had no apparent open space for kids to run about. Our pitch was a 'Jumbo' tent pitch and our tent wasn't large. We had just enough room but not loads. We were surprised at how close to the road cars were parked which we felt was a bit unsafe for kids visibility wise. We were surprised how packed the site was and how close the units were together and were pleased that we opted for a larger pitch. We fancied chips from the chip van one night but the queue was ridiculous. Hubby went, came back deciding to try again later, went back 45 mins later and the same people were still waiting. Good job we brought supplies from the supermarket. Have to say that it comes late as well - 7. 30ish which too late for the kids to eat who were asleep by then. As CCC members were were disappointed and won't be going back due to how crammed in it was, the queue for ladies showers, the wait to get to our pitch and the amount of transit vans on site and the other comments mentioned.
Just got back from a very cold but enjoyable Easter weekend at Barnaby Castle, originally we had booked for a site in north wales but this was cancelled due to heavy snow and ice on the site so we picked this location as there were still spaces available.
The site is excellent, very flat, the toilet blocks and showers were immaculate all weekend and the staff/wardens on duty were all very friendly and helpful, the site was practically empty all weekend due to earlier weather related cancellations so we couldn't get a true feel for the site but we will definitely return.
The town of Barnard castle is worth visiting and the nearby high force waterfall is also worth a visit, the only word of warning I would offer is the very narrow access road to the site off the main road, it is only single lane with maybe three or four passing places and twists and turns with a narrow bridge to cross, we didn't meet anybody coming the other way fortunately but I reckon in high season it could be a bit of a challenge to say the least. Other than that a cracking little site to visit.
Just got back from 4 nights here. Arrived to a very warm welcome, shown several pitches we could choose from, all were very flat. We were on a grass with electric, good soil for normal tent pegs, no rock pegs needed here. I would have booked a hardstanding if there was one to book on the website but they were all booked. Was glad we got a grass one as we were all on our own at the far end of the site, whereas the hardstandings were quite crammed in the other end.
Lovely peaceful site. Only traffic noise is from a farm drive, the occasional tractor or car. Shower block is large, warm and clean. Although we'd not got the kids with us there was a nice little playground for small children. Nothing for older ones though and no ball games allowed. (I do wish both the big clubs would provide fenced in areas where they could play football / Basketball/ tennis etc. Without problems like you see in family friendly sites on the continent. )
A chip van visits on Saturday and Wednesday nights, good fish and chips.
Barnard Castle is a lovely town, the Bowes Museum is a must visit.
From the warm welcome when we arrived this was the start of a lovely stay. The pitches are beautifully laid out with lots of room and a nice grass space between. The toilets, showers and basins were kept really clean, water lovely and hot, my favourite was the enclosed basins so you could be private, wish all sites did this. No children with us but those that were seemed to enjoy the small play ground. Barnard Castle is lovely with lots of antique shops, spent too much but whats a holiday for. There is lots to do in the area, an Abbey, the castle and near to the lakes. Must also mention the lovely fish and chips van which calls on site. I only would do one thing a few more refuse bins. Once again thanks to the wardens who keep it in the style.
Having recently joined the Camping and Caravan Club (C&CC) (which in our opinion, is more geared towards caravanners than campers), we decided to opt for a visit to Barnard Castle Camping and Caravanning Club Site. On arrival to this relatively secluded site, we were met in the reception area by the wardens who presented as being friendly, polite and very helpful.
After being booked-in, we were shown to out tent pitch which was level and thankfully very well drained, as the constant, and sometimes torrential rain, lasted non-stop for the next 3 days. The site itself is well maintained, with the toilets, showers and dish washing facilities all being very clean, with plenty of hot water on demand.
At the reception area, there are a selection of information leaflets about days out, local attractions and an OS map of the area, etc. The reception also doubles as a shop selling some basic food essentials and ice-cream, etc. A book exchange is also available, which actually costs money to exchange a book (Okay, it’s only 50p but if you are swapping a book surely this should be free!).
There is a fish & chip van that visits the campsite on a Wednesday evening for a couple of hours and the fish and chips are very tasty and are reasonably priced. Unfortunately, during our trip, we ran out of camping gas for our stove and despite the campsite being a gas cylinder stockist, we were advised that they only stock the gas bottle that we required in the summer months and tended only to keep a stock of the larger gas canisters used by … yes, you guessed it, by people in caravans. Anyway a trip into a gas stockist called Richardson’s of Barnard Castle, fixed this issue, but, again in our opinion, yet another example of the C&CC favouring caravans over campers in tents.
In summary, we would still recommend this campsite due to the friendliness of staff and its general location; as it makes a good base for exploring Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales National Park, as well as being a haven for walkers like us.
Happy Camping!
