Generally I stay on club sites but I have driven past Norden Farm for a number of years and have always wanted to try it. So, this year I bit the bullet and booked a 23 night stay on a pitch with mains hookup. The site is made up of three fields and I was in the main field which has mains hookup. All of the pitches are grass and the ones I saw were good and flat. This was a bit of a concern when the week before I was due to go down to Dorset it rained and rained and rained.
I got a phone call from the owner to advise that the they weren't sure of the state of the pitch because of all the rain. The concern was they couldn't assess the state of my allocated pitch until the current occupants left which wouldn't be until 11am on the day I was due to arrive. We agreed that of the pitch was too wet I would put the caravan on another pitch without the awning for a few days and then when the pitch dried out I would move onto it. Anyway, when I arrived on site it turned out that the pitched had drained well and was okay to use. The ground was very firm, supported the caravan well and held the pegs securing my caravan.
The site is a walking farm and it was great to see the cows and goats in the barns and the geese, ducks and peacocks wandering around the site. A few times I had to stop the car on the way back to my pitch to shoo away the ducks or the geese. I think this added to the charm of the site. At night its pitch black as there are no street lights around and this lets you see so many more stars in the sky. On top of that I heard the hooting of owls every night.
The site shop was really good with all the basics at good prices and also bread and products from local farms - I had some delicious burgers and sausages from the shop.
The site is a short walk from the Norden station on the Swanage Railway which offers a steam train link to Swanage and also a seasonal diesel service to Wareham. The Swanage Railway offers 3 and 5 day passes which come in handy if you get addicted to travelling on the steam trains!
Juat a bit further down the road is Corfe Castle which has the castle ruins, some great pubs and tea shops, model village and a new water park.
In the opposite direction (going towards Wareham) its just a short drive to the Halfway Inn pub which does a mean Sunday lunch (there other food is great too!)
A major plus for the site is its location - driving through Corfe Castle can be a nightmare during busy periods. Because the site is on the Wareham side of Corfe its less of a problem (except on a hot Bank Holiday Sunday where I think the queue probably stretched all the way back to London!)
I am already planning on going back to Norden Farm for the same period next year.
We arrived on site a day early, don't know how we got mixed up but the check in staff were helpful in booking us in from that day, we were pitched in the main field right at the side of the road which serves the rest of the campsite and tent field, thus there was continual traffic up and down all day including farm machinery, so goodbye to a quiet break, (could probably make things better by planting bushes or conifers to deaden the noise). There were 2 shower/toilets, and the block next to the reception was brilliant with very clean amenities, but the other block was not so good with showers that you had to keep your finger on the button to keep the shower on other than that was very clean, we were a bit disappointed with the noise aspect and left three days early, but did like the farm yard and animals and the closeness to corfe castle with a great safe walk into Corfe. Will not be going again.
Stayed for a couple of nights in my Romahome. A grass site with no hookup, a pleasant place to be without going off the site, the atmosphere was relaxing even with the arrival of a large school part of campers. A short walk into Corfe village is pleasant in dry weather but would be slippy in the wet.
I have to say that after the initial surprise at the site, I thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The initial surprise came from the number of people on the site when we arrived, but it was a sunny Sunday in July. The site has a number of fields dedicated to camping, some with hook-ups and some without. There are two toilet blocks, which are kept scrupulously clean. There is a butty wagon which does bacon butties for breakfast (as well as sausage/egg - I had bacon butties) and chips and something in the evening. A hog roast arrived on Saturday evening as well. In addition there is the farm shop, so we were well served for excellent food.
There is a kids playground for small children, although that didn't stop some of the older kids using it. There is also some farm animals in the barns between the campsite and the shop, great attraction for the kids. It is a working farm, after all.
Corfe Castle is a short walk away, either through the woods along the Purbeck Way or the easier and shorter route out of the front gate.
Everyone we spoke to was very friendly, so would we go back again? If I'm ever going back to the area, Norden Farm will be my first choice!
Have just returned after four relaxing nights. Recommended site, for friendliness. Clean facilities, showers, toilets washing up area, laundry and a pooch warm shower (which our old Lab made the use of) Farm shop. All correct.
So first impressions were good, easy accessible site from the main road into Corfe Castle, working farm, so chickens and peacocks were milling around. The reception is through the small garden centre area inside the farm shop. We were given a pitch in the main field, you could pitch anywhere between the 2 yellow markers so pitched side on like a lot of other units, some looked seasonal, to make the most of the sun. We arrived on a Friday lunchtime and it looked to be filling up pretty quickly with a mixture of tents and vans. You can safely walk from the site along the marked off road route to Corfe Castle. Lovely little village with some niche shops and a couple of pubs, the beer garden in The Greyhound overlooks the Castle, or rather the castle overlooks the pub. When we got back the site was packed, and we noticed a lot of groups pitched together with no regard for the 6m safety gap, needless to say a very noisy evening ensued with children still riding bikes and screeching gone past 11pm, and the booming base of someones music. The showers block in the camping fields were awful, push button and ranging staying on from between 5-9 secs, The main amenities block just pass the farmyard were much better. Small dog area along the perimeter of the site, bit loose underfoot, a lot of dogs loose in all camping fields, including the roaming farmdog. A walk along the main road verge brings you to the signpost for Norden station to pick up the steam train to Swanage. Swanage busy as a pirate festival was going on and dogs not allowed anywhere on the beach so walked out along the coast path to Peverill Point then up over to Durlston castle. The Saturday evening was a bit quieter, I assume some people had complained, then Sunday the great packing up of the weekenders, Sunday evening and Monday morning when we left it was like a different campsite. It takes all sorts of campers, I would come here midweek but would avoid the weekend
We booked an electric pitch for 7 nights in our motorhome. We arrived at 6. 10pm to find the reception closed. We had to telephone the warden who told us where to pitch. The pitch was under trees with the electric point stuck out in the middle of the field (not back by the hedge or fence like most sites).
Our 15m hook up lead wouldn't reach and the branches of the trees were hitting our motorhome when the wind blew. I immediately spoke to a warden telling him of the problems and asking if we could move to another pitch. He said you will have to ask reception in the morning, but from the way he said this it sounded doubtful. We went to reception at 8. 30 am to explain the problems. The manager wasn't interested in the fact that the pitch wasn't suitable and point blank refused to allow us to move. He said he had no other pitches he could move us to, which was untrue. We counted over 50 available electric pitches across the 3 fields so couldn't see why this was a problem. You cannot reserve a specific pitch so why were they being held? We had booked 7 nights so it was not as if we would be moving again soon. The manager (Ben Barton) suggested we hire a longer lead for £50 deposit but this would not resolve the fact of trees hitting our motorhome and our 15m lead reached on all other sites and would have reached on another pitch. Whilst waiting, hoping to be moved we had 2 motorhomes drive across our pitch to fill up with water from the tap. They were just inches from our vehicle and parked on our pitch. I was not prepared to risk our childs safety or damage to my vehicle from this or the trees so told the manager again the pitch was not suitable. He still refused us to move and as the conversation got a bit heated he offered a refund less our deposit. I demanded a full refund as the pitch was not suitable and we now had to look for another site. I will be claiming this back on our return. We never had the chance to use any of the facilities but they looked ok. It's the site and managers attitude which would be why we obviously wouldn't return.
Luckily we found another local site where you could pitch were you liked with welcoming staff and was much better managed. This site may be ok if your pitch is suitable but God help you if you encounter any problems during your stay.
P. S. I was advised to take photos of the pitch and signage etc to help with claiming a refund on our return and while doing this was approached by the manager saying he was going to call the police
Another happy stay at lovely Norden farm. We love this site for the fantastic location right near Corfe Castle and not far from Swanage and the lovely beaches at Shell bay, and for it's charming farm site atmosphere, great well looked after facilities and lovely views. The shop is vast and well stocked with lot's of basics and some more interesting bits and pieces, they also have a nice little garden centre with lots of nice plants etc for sale which is a nice extra. We have camped on various fields now and have our favourite, though most of them are nice. There is a hot food van which we have not used before but as we were in a rush one morning we had a bacon bap which was ok, and also does evening meals (we didn't try those). As always we loved seeing the farm animals and old machinery etc, part of the charm of this lovely site. The site has got more and more popular since we first came here years ago, but is as charming as ever. Look forward to next time.
Stayed over August bank holiday. The site was very busy but not overcrowded. Facilities good and generally clean. Floors suffer if it is damp and there are lots of people.
The reception is great, and staff very good. The shop is well stocked with food, drink, and general stuff including some camping equipment.
We were in the Top Field, which doesn't have marked pitches. There were a number of groups of families/friends. It was still a pretty quiet site overall though.
A van offers bacon rolls and other stuff for breakfast at weekends in summer
There is a small playground, which looked good, but my son is past that now so we didn't use it.
A great area to visit, and I would love to return and would certainly stay here again.
We stayed here end of July into August. It is the first time at this site. We will definitely be returning.
A well run friendly and relaxed site with a good shop and first class showers which have a tap rather than the annoying push button.
The site itself is situated on a working farm with the sights, sounds and smells associated with it which we loved we even got a discount for staying over 7 nights. There is a fishing pond which we will be taking advantage of next visit and a food van which we did not use but it is there if you want it.
There is a nice little path into Corfe Castle from the site although care should be taken walking it at night after visiting a local cider festival as a friend of mine found out when tripping into a bramble bush.
The is good access to Studland and Purbeck via car or bus and the Swanage railway is easily accessed by foot.
Nice site and in good walking distance from the village. Facilities were clean and we'll kept. Defined pitches. Although there did not appear to be any camper services.
The entrance to the pitches was through the farm so it was nice to see the calves, rams and goats. Sign up saying animals and children have priority so there were kids on bikes and scooters charging around everywhere!,
Well appointed site, a short walk from Corfe Castle. Good play area and a tea/burger chip van on site. Reasonably quiet with good facilities. A mixed batch of units and campers. We had a great weekend in this picturesque valley. My only comment would be that a lot of dogs were off lead, which is fine but not everyone loves dogs. Not the best site if you are unkeen on dogs.
We stayed at this site recently and have rarely been to a more friendly dog site. First class facilities, which were kept spotless and a good shop with reasonable prices, One small point I would say is that it can get a bit too full but all in all a great site which we will use again
Nice spacious site. A little muddy as you have to negotiate the farmyard entering and leaving. Toilet block lovely and clean, although expect visits from ducks. Well stocked shop and friendly staff. A problem with an overloaded hook-up point was quickly resolved by the on-site technical man. 10 minute walk to the Swanage Steam Railway, but no decent footpath along the busy main road.
This was our second visit to the site and this time to camp with friends in the main field over the late May bank holiday weekend.
The site was busy but the main field is so large that you were not crammed in; we cook on petrol and cool on gas, so we could tuck ourselves well away from the hustle and bustle at the far end.
The shower blocks are really excellent, but there can be queues at peak times for the showers. As they are quite close together, it is worth walking to the other one to see if there is less of a queue.
The shop has practically everything you could wish for, but there was limited fresh meat this weekend; this was probably down to how busy they were. That is not a problem because shops and supermarkets are only a short ride away.
There is a really good footpath walk into Corfe which takes in the beautiful castle. If you like to run in the morning you can take the Corfe footpath at the entrance of the site and turn right halfway along to bring you over a hill and back into the site at the far end; that is about two miles and you can extend that to five if you go around Corfe and back over the hill on your way back. In the evening, the walk into Corfe is pretty easy and the town has some nice pubs.
As with most sites, if you book for the bank holiday you must pay for three nights; we could not get down for the Friday night and only stayed two nights, but we were able to book Saturday, Sunday and Monday night which meant we could stay as late as we wanted on the Monday before heading home.
The owners are really friendly and accommodating, so make a point of getting to know them when you check in. I needed to borrow some wooden blocks to level my camp-kitchen table, and they let me raid some from the barn in the farmyard.
Overall a very good site and, with cooked food available when you fancy a night off plus such good facilities, it is definitely one I would recommend for extended stays.
