Our second time camping and first visit to this site. What a difference in the site management. No overcrowding plenty of space for all and the middle of the large field left free for activities. We were fortunate enough to be allocated a pitch in the wooded area where there are alcoves let into the woods, which give a fair amount of privacy, for the pitch and the trees did not overhang the tent.
The pitches were large enough for tent, kitchen area and vehicle. The toilet block was clean and adequate and as the new owner is aware in need of an upgrade, particularly if the site got very busy. It was good to see the owner using the facilities himself. I did like the family washing / showering cubicles.
The area itself has more than enough attractions to keep the family occupied. They vary from a steam railway, adjacent to the site, boat trips a short walk away, Camber sands a good drive away, Rye and Bodiam Castle to name but a few.
Talking to the new owner he is well aware of the short comings of the site as it is and has plans to expand the wooded sites, very popular, and upgrade the current facilities. I would have no hesitation in recommending this site and revisiting next year to cover more of the attractions.
Have just returned from a weekend camping at the Rother Valley site. Pitch was fairly level with good views pleasantly interrupted on a couple of occasions by views of the local steam train which we'll be booking next time we visit. We chose to do the river trip to Bodiam Castle and thoroughly enjoyed it. As on previous reviews toilet and shower block is basic but kept clean and more than adequate. This site is under new ownership and they intend to update during the closed season. We were made to feel extremely welcome and enjoyed a very relaxing break in lovely surroundings, so much so that we've booked to go back over the bank holiday weekend.
Just returned from a glorious weekend at this exceptional camp site. It is under new management and boy does it show. The new owner is charming, accommodating and creates just the right atmosphere of organised calm, despite only having taken over a few weeks ago. There are plans for updated facilities but we found them adequate. The camping field is wonderful, especially the little wooded enclaves that have a real sense of place, a touch of 'wild' camping without having to rough it. The children found the steam train charming. Local pub, next door to the site. What more could you want! Will be going back as soon as possible.
Get here before the hoards find out how good it is.
We have just returned from this lovely site. As mentioned on the website this site is under new management and they are already making noticeable improvements. We visited this site last year and can now report that the showers last long enough to wash long hair and the caravan 'graveyard' is being cleared, the entrance to the site has been decorated with flowers and is very welcoming, as indeed are the new owners. The facilities are clean, well stocked with soap, paper towels and toilet rolls. Jackie and her father Dennis are the new owners and are a pleasure to meet. They are friendly, helpful and always have time for a chat. But not interfering .The perfect hosts.
After setting up on Friday afternoon our weekend started with a BBQ, enjoying a glass of wine whilst watching the sunset over the meadow. A peaceful night's sleep followed and we were up on Saturday morning to watch the sunrise. After breakfast we took a steam train from Northiam, which is a two minute walk from the site, into Tenterden. A 'picture postcard' village with a good selection of shops and places to have lunch. Early afternoon we caught the steam train back to Northiam and even managed a cream tea on the trip! If you don't fancy cooking you can let someone else take the strain and enjoy a meal in the pub located at the entrance to the site.
Saturday night was spent watching bats and rabbits and enjoying the peace and quite. After a lie in on Sunday, we rose to the sound of bagpipes and an air display of three byplanes! We are 'seasoned' campers and can honestly say we had a really great time. We will definitely be back this summer and we wish Dennis and Jackie all the very best. A good value, pleasant site in a great location with superb views and wonderful hosts.
It had basic facilities (toilets, showers, washing up points and running water) which were not 4 star, granted, but they worked and were rarely busy. Note: if you have particular long or thick hair (like me!) and you need to really rinse out conditioner etc in the shower and find that 4 minutes is not enough don't put more than one 20p in at a time, put one in, finish the shower then put the second in (or use the sink!)
We also were in the main field as we had electric hook up (which all worked fine) There is another area for tents which is very secluded and shaded and ideal for protection from the elements, this was further from the loo block but still very quiet and pleasant, despite being busy with tents.
There is a stunning view and if you are lucky you will see the steam trains pass through near the bottom of the field.
Rabbits are also residents there and yes, there are a few holes so watch out!
Site was fairly flat although you may want to bring blow up matresses as we found a few bumpy areas on the ground.
BBq's are allowed as long as they are not disposable ones and they are off the ground.
Pub (The Station House) is slap bang at the entrance of the site with pool table, children's play area and good grub available. Nearby (via car, not walking!) is a well stocked shop and chippy.
We also took a wonderful boat ride from nearby to Bodiam Castle. Highly recommended!
We would visit again, certainly! We booked this site the day before we went, having read some terrible reviews of another campsite we had booked into nearby, so we really didn't know what to expect. We had a wonderful time.
Set in 500 acres of beautiful, rolling Kent countryside. The Oast village on site is the World's largest Oast house collection and makes for a spectacular backdrop. Grass and hardstanding pitches for caravans, tents and motorhomes with electric option. Modern toilets and showers and multiple washing up facilities.
Small shop onsite and pub/restaurant at the entrance. The River Medway flows through the site, providing idyllic waterside pitches. Make the most of the location and try your hand at canoeing or fishing or simply sit back, unwind and enjoy wildlife spotting. Five minutes' drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London Find out more here
We have just returned from a two night stay at Rother Valley Campsite. As always it had its good and bad points.
The reception by the owner was not exactly warm and we were directed to the pitch and then left to explore where the water tap and shower blocks were!
As the other reviews have noted when you first enter the site it is like a scrap yard or caravan graveyard; but do not let this deter you! We stayed with just a basic tent with no need for electrical hook-up; which on reflection is the ideal for this site! We were given a secluded pitch amongst the trees that is separate from the main electrical hook-up open field.
The down side to this secluded location is that is is quite a walk to the toilet / shower block. The block is clean, but outdated. 20p for a shower which only lasts long enough if you have short hair to wash. There are only two showers and two toilets (but this did not seem a problem, even though it was a bank holiday weekend). They are cleaned and replenished very regularly.
The local area is lovely and there are three pubs that are very local; we stopped by The Station Pub on Friday afternoon and received a very warm welcome and had excellent sausage & mash at a reasonable price.
There is a steam railway that you hear clearly from the site, but it really is very quaint and not something you experience everyday.
We took advantage of the Bodium Ferry trip to the castle, just the perfect way to travel; with the added bonus of meeting Daisy the dog on the Ferry. On our return we had cream tea at the River Cottage (which also runs the Ferry) and finished a perfect afternoon. We had such a warm reception and were made to feel at home (their cat loved the cream tea too!)
If you enjoy falling asleep and waking up to the sound of bird song then give this site a go; it may be just what you are looking for. All in all it was a lovely break away; but I don't think we will be using this site again.
Found the site easy (there is a camping sign, but no mention of the site name. But common sense tells you its the right one as there is no others)
GOOD POINTS:-
Lovely field in a lovely quiet location.
Electric Hook Ups
Has toilets & showers & washing-up area.
Pub nearby.
Steam railway 5 minute walk away, & boats to Bodiam castle.
Approachable staff.
Cheap.
NOT SO GOOD:-
Showers are 20p (sometimes takes the money yet no water!)
Pub was more of a posh restaurant, and quite boring for us (felt like waiting at a station in fact!) but the staff were very nice & friendly, and I'm sure the food is lovely too.
Between the showers and the camping field you do feel you are passing through a scrap yard (or a retro caravan grave-yard!)
If you are looking for a peaceful & picturesque site then try this one. Entry is through the pub car park, you are met by the owner/manager of the site who sits in his quirky little green caravan. The site is set out on two fields, the electric hook ups span the perimeter and if you are lucky over looking the quaint Kent & East Sussex Railway. The main field was very quiet even with the distant sound of the steam trains. The facilities are basic but clean, all very acceptable.
The pub next to the site was fantastic, great food and good friendly service, well worth a visit. Thanks
Just got back from a weekend here, site is OK. They had no recollection of our telephone booking from the Monday, but had space for the 2 pitches together.
Large field, pitches around the edge, 14 electrical hook ups, steam train runs along bottom of the field and hot air balloons come down in the field opposite.
Toilet block is at one end of the field, 2 toilets, 2 sinks with shaver points, 2 showers that take 20p's for 4-5 minutes. (why do people still do that??). So if you are in the secluded part off the end of the field, its quite a walk.
Entrance to the site is through a pub car park. The pub is excellent, recently refurbished I understand, great menu, very reasonable. Landlord was playing bagpipes in the car park on sunday at about 11am, so entertainment too !
20 mins from Camber sands by car through some lovely countryside, 10 mins to Rye. Ideal base for dinner on the train looks great (http://www.Kesr.Org.Uk/pullman/pullman_index.Htm).
The only problem we had was an abundance of tiny midges that were everywhere from about 10 am to 6pm. Not sure if there was a body of water nearby.
We found this place to be very easy to find as its on the main road and there is a small camping / caravan sign outside the pub that was on view.
I can see why it looks a bit unfriendly and there are some some signs of the 'Do not do this' variety (no BBQs / fires) that are offputting. However, we ultimately found that once you've got through that they actually leave you alone.
We arrived quite late (about 8.30pm) but were able to contact the owners using the phone contacts on the little caravan there. They were friendly enough and let us in okay. The chain entrance is open at 8am in the mornings and locked at 11pm.
It was very empty when we got there but there is a big campsfield for carvans and a separate tent area. We stayed where the caravans normally go because there were only two others there and we had great views. It's really peaceful except for the cockerel that sings at 5am for half an hour!
Showers (20p pieces needed for about 5 minutes) and toilets were okay, although if the campsite was full it wouldn't be enough. I don't think that happens much. There's a steam train that goes along the bottom of the campsite too.
The best part of our break was the wonderful pub that is situated by the campsite. They serve great food and are so friendly and helpful. We ended up staying quite a lot just chatting to them and the really friendly locals. They have a quiz night on a monday and they don't mind if they get beaten by guests! There's a chip shop and newsagent / food shop along the main road (about 5 mins by car)
