June 2005 Great little site, quiet & secluded, lovely large field to camp in which was sheltered with pretty hedges, lovely beaches & walks down the farm lanes. The nearby village of East wittering has a lovely selection of shops & places to eat, fish & chips on the beach is just heaven!
The site is on a working farm and the children loved watching the lambs in the next door field, a real bonus.
Facilities are basic but adequate, the ecoloos are a great idea, much better than portaloos and were kept clean & tidy, we were surprised how well they worked and did not smell at all. The site was busy over the bank holiday & the facilities only just coped but most site have similar problems over busy bank holiday weekends. I was amazed how much rubbish was left after the bank holiday - what a terrible waste and it was good to see that the owners are recycling much of this, they cleared it away within 24hrs of the end of the bank holiday - it just goes to show what a terrible consumer society we are! After everyone went on the Monday we had the site pretty much to ourselves with only two other families and this was just perfect.
The owners are friendly and although they are busy on the farm, checked the toilets & showers before starting work in the morning and again in the evening. There was plenty of space for the children to play games and with no roads nearby you did not have to worry about traffic.
All in all if you want a nice old fashioned traditional site without all the modern day trimmings, this is a lovely site in a lovely location.
June 2005 This site is in a great location and the site itself is quite pleasant. But... the facilities are basic to say the least (when we stayed on a Saturday night there was one shower/loo to serve around 70 people staying on the site + 3 eco toilets - which were dreadful on a hot weekend).
Also, some parts of the site seemed a bit unsafe for children e.g. near our tent was a dilapidated old greenhouse with shards of broken glass strewn around on the grass outside. Also all the bins were overflowing, and were not emptied during our stay.
I think this could be a lovely site if the owners invested a little bit of time and money in it - both in upgrading the facilities and maintaining the site.
May 2005 We stayed at this site over part of the whitsun half term. It's a really nice site, and on a normal weekend it is probably really peaceful. The location is beautiful, with a huge choice of beaches and harbours all just a short walk or drive away.
Unfortunately our stay coincided with some huge family gathering of about 40 Spanish people who camped right on top of us, so for the first 2 nights is was like camping next door to a nightclub. Once they packed up and left we got a much better idea of what it must be like usually, we even managed to use the shower! I'd definitely go back for a non holiday weekend, but to be honest the site just isn't able to cope with the number of visitors over the bank holiday weekend. The eco toilets are a great idea, but they could have done with checking more than once a day, I think the wood shavings supply must have run out for a couple of days as the buckets were empty for a couple of days.
The recycling facilities were not big enough for the volume of waste people were throwing out either, I ended up piling up paper on the ground as the small box supplied was overflowing, I just hoped it would be collected before the wind blew it all over the site.
May 2005 We have been using this site for many years and thoroughly recommend it. It is a delightful small traditional "eco friendly" site, quiet & secluded but close to good beaches and East Wittering village (which has good shops & places to eat).
The facilities are basic but adequate, the old shower has been replaced with a nice new unit & redecorated, the new ecoloos are great and even the potholes in the lane have been filled in!
The site attracts a nice friendly relaxed informal clientele, and most of the noisier "essexboy" set luckily seem to prefer the bigger sites elsewhere. The owners are very friendly,relaxed and helpful.
We especially like the "eco friendliness" of the site which is fairly unique and is is surrounded by attractive hedges which are full of wildlife & birds. The site is not regimented like most modern sites and there is plenty of room between pitches, even on bank holidays when they open a big overflow field.
Showers are free, the only downside is that there is occasional queuing at peak times on busy bank holidays, although most other times are ok. If you are looking for a simple pretty old fashioned traditional campsite then this is for you, if you want lots of modern facilities then this is not the site for you.
May 2005 We had a wonderful time staying at Stubcroft, the campsite is basic and environmentally friendly, which to us is a huge luxury!! The owners were extremely helpful and friendly. The walks close to the campsite are breathtaking and teaming with wildlife.
We would recommend Stubcroft to those who enjoy escaping the fast pace of life, but it would not be suitable for those who enjoy the clubs!!
There is a very nice pub 5-10 minutes walk from the campsite…the food is fantastic, booking is recommended in busy periods!!
August 2004 We as a group of well-behaved teenagers stayed here in summer 2004. For our purposes it was fantastic - good basic facilites, though queues for the toilet were not unknown, and level pitches. The site was not near full, so we had our pick of site and spacing! The weather was PERFECT, the campsite within walking distance of the small town (one cafe serving a mean bacon sandwich) and longlong beach.
We travelled by train, then a bus. The directions given were clear, the journey very simple, and the only gripe would be walking down the track to the farm carrying tents!
July 2004 We have used this site for all of 2004 and the owners are very helpful, friendly and laid back. The site is a working farm and is quiet and relaxing. The facilities are not luxurious but are adequate, location is ideal for beaches, Chichester, walking.
Restaurants and pubs are within walking distance. If you want regimentation and rules and regs find another site where you will be told where you will be told to pitch exactly 10'away from your neighbouring sardine. We have used sites all over uk and Europe and feel qualified to recommend this site.
August 2004 Visited the site august bank holiday stayed for 5 nights. This was a nice quiet site and the owners were very nice but there is room for improvements. The lane to the farm had lots of pot holes. There was only one shower that has seen better days, the shower cubicle was cracked and there was duck tape on the shower tray, although the shower was hot you had to hold the shower head as the bit it clips onto had been broken. There was only one proper toilet and basin and they were in the shower room. There are three eco loo's on the first field that were ok, (if you don't mind doing your stuff in a hole). As it was a peak time when we went it was very busy and there was always several people waiting to use the shower. Nice enough site but not my cup of tea.....
May / June 2004 I am reluctant to write about this site in case too many people visit it! There are wonderful beaches nearby and lots of places to visit. The site is a real gem, sheltered, secluded and level with plenty of room between pitches not like many sites where you are packed in like sardines. It is on a working sheep farm - we were there during lambing and it was great to see all the newborn lambs.
The owners have obviously taken note of Sharon c's comments, the pot holes have recently been filled in, there are two new toilets recently built in the camping field and the old shower / toilet has been re-decorated including opaqueing the toilet window and new coat hooks! They have also added a waste recycling area for eco campers! If you want launderettes, bars, clubhouses & lots of facilities this is not the site for you but hey - thats part of its attraction! I have to say though to Sharon, whats wrong with a good old washing up bowl to do the dishes?
There was loads of wildlife around as the owners are environmentalists, such as many different types of birds, rabbits, deer etc. In the evening a hedgehog sauntered up to our dirty plates & remains of our barbecue which was really cute!
Will definately go again but hope that it does not get too commercialised.
April 2004 Stayed 2 nights at the site. Nice location only a shortish walk from East Wittering, which has a good selection of shops – including butchers, fruit & veg shop, fishmonger etc., and the shore (was very windy!!). Had lovely fish & chips at ‘the boulevard’ – massive portions!
The road to the site was quite pot-holed. Was very quiet when we arrived – only one other tent, a motorhome and caravan. Can pitch where you like in the field, which was level if a bit bumpy in places (but didn’t notice it with the thermarests to sleep on!). Was disappointed with the facilities – only one shower / toilet / basin which were all together in one room. The net curtains over the window didn’t offer much privacy, especially if you had the light on – which was amusing for myself and partner but I wouldn’t be so pleased if other people had been peering in at me! The shower was ‘tired’ although the water was hot. Nowhere to hang clothes etc when washing so had to put stuff on the loo. There are no separate washing-up facilities so had to wash up in the sink in the loo – wasn’t impressed with this. Also, even tho there were only a few on site we had to wait for the loo a number of times as others were showering / washing up.
It was a quiet site and we liked the location. I’ve no idea how long the owners have been running the site but it’s a great shame a little more thought hasn’t been taken over the facilities. Simple things like a couple of hooks on the back of the door in the shower room would make a big difference, but the main reason we won’t be going back here is that one toilet really isn’t enough when it’s in with the shower. If the site had a separate toilet and a proper washing up area it would be a massive improvement. At £8 a night I feel it was a little pricey considering just how basic the facilities were. I don’t expect 5* luxury but I do expect clean, reasonable facilities.
Sept 2003 Great, peaceful site in a superb location. We stayed from Friday afternoon till Sunday & loved every minute. We had 3 tents in our party & only 2 other tents in field, so plenty of space.
Toilet facilities are clean & basic however, but likely to be a queue in the height of summer. Will definitely come back again as this is a good old traditional campsite ! Only a short drive to West Wittering beach & the shops at East Wittering.
August 2003 Delightful quiet and uncommercial secluded site on a working Sheep and Arable Farm. It is located close to some of the best beaches in Sussex and near to Chichester Harbour & City.
There is a spacious level field which is fairly well sheltered. Facilities are limited but there is drinking water on the field, shower, toilet & washbasin and chemical waste disposal. There is sometimes a bit of a queue for facilities at peak times but it is such a delightful location it is worth putting up with this minor inconvenience.
It is a real gem of a small campsite with plenty of room for those who want a traditional old fashioned site without commercialism. It is not for those who want clubhouses, discos, shops etc. but if you want camping as it should be then I thouroughly recommend this site.
